LIFESTYLE LETTER

"Perfect"

December 2022 PUBLISHER S

Jahna Eichel | jahna.eichel@citylifestyle.com Jason Eichel | jason.eichel@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

The world is a big place, and we all have different goals. I think you’ll agree that no matter where we are in the world or what our goals are, one thing is true: We want to feel like we’ve accomplished something amazing. We want to feel like we’ve made a difference. And most importantly, we want to feel proud of ourselves. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my life as a business owner, publisher, wife & mother- it’s that there’s no such thing as true perfection- it comes down to your own personal vision of what that means for you. Going into 2023, I challenge each and every one of you to make one small edit in our thinking. When we shoot for “perfect” we should really shoot for “perfect for me”. Know you’re out there, doing amazing things. I know that you have big plans for 2023—and I bet they scare the pants off of you sometimes. But guess what? That’s okay! We’re all scared sometimes. We’ll all get through it together, and we’ll all look back on it and be like “yeah, THAT was crazy.” So go ahead and make your plan for 2023: start with the end in mind, and then break it down into manageable chunks that take you from where you are now to where you want to be by December 31st of next year. Make sure each chunk is something that makes sense for YOU—not just something that other people think would be cool or impressive or whatever. Do it for yourself first and foremost; do it because YOU want this for yourself more than anything else in the world (even if no one else knows about it yet). And then let me know about it when you succeed!

Lindsey Stirlings Brings A Stellar Holiday Tour To Northern Colorado

The "Snow Waltz Tour" is coming to Colorado! Lindsey Stirling, the world-renowned violinist and dancer, is bringing her magical interpretation of the most beautiful and nostalgic holiday music to Northern Colorado on December 15. Stirling's performances are more dynamic than ever, intertwining dance, trapeze, lyra and aerial all while delivering an impeccable violin performance. The tour began in November and is bringing the holiday spirit from coast to coast. The tour culminates in a special show on December 23 in Los Angeles. Snow Waltz is an album that will help you create the perfect holiday season. It's the follow-up to her debut holiday album Warmer in the Winter — which earned a No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Holiday Albums Chart, and No. 1 on Amazon and iTunes Holiday Album Charts. Snow Waltz emerges as a singular new entry in the holiday-music canon once again proving Stirling’s extraordinary gift as an instrumental storyteller. The Snow Waltz album includes eight classic covers and five original tracks that embody Lindsey’s limitless imagination. Her remarkable take on classic holiday music alongside an assortment of new songs proves Lindsey’s extraordinary ability to immerse her audience into a whole new experience of instrumental wonder. The mesmerizing melodies produced on the album have every family adding it to the list of holiday favorites. This hypnotic performance weaves together the joy of the holidays with the artistry of abstract theatrics. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as this extraordinary violinist takes you through a journey of whimsical hauntings. The preternatural mood of the tour is reflexive of the mastery Lindsey has in captivating an audience. As Dickens taught us with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, even the holidays

are more compelling when combined with the eerie unknown. Snow Waltz emerges as a ballad of profound storytelling that will capture every audience member. The Snow Waltz Album has quickly made its way into the homes of all holiday lovers. Every song on the album has been carefully reimagined by Lindsey to push the boundaries of what these classic holiday songs could be. The complexity of Lindsey’s interpretations proves her to be a musical genius. The perfect soundtrack for the holidays, Lindsey will have you convinced that she is “Mother Christmas.” Lindsey Stirling has been called a "global superstar" by Forbes and one of the top ten violinists in the world by the Huffington Post. She is a classically trained violinist who has also become known for her dance-influenced performances, which are choreographed to her original music. Lindsey's multi-genre style has led to collaborations with other musicians like David Archuleta, Elle King, Lzzy Hale and ZZ ward. Her discography includes covers of songs by other musicians and various soundtracks. In addition to her original work, Lindsey's music video "Crystallize" finished as the eighth-most watched video of 2012 on YouTube and was named in Forbes magazine's 30 Under 30 In Music: The Class Of 2015. Forbes notes her quarter-finalist position on America's Got Talent season five in 2011, as well as her No. 2 position on the Billboard 200 for her second album, Shatter Me in 2014. On top of those accomplishments, she has 11 million subscribers on YouTube. The official music video for Snow Waltz's title track already has 1.5 million views in just 30 days! With incredibly profound dance, costumes and a theatrical performance sure to set an awe-inspiring backdrop for the live experience. Tickets are on sale and available now, including multiple VIP meet & greet experiences. CONTINUED >

If you want to stay fashionable from the slopes to a champagne-soaked après-ski in the lodge, let’s get a look at those trendy snowsuits and see how they are perfect for all winter activities. Winter is the season of fashion and style. With amazing trends coming out every year, we can never get enough of them. This season is no exception when it comes to dressing up for winter activities. Whether it is skiing, snowboarding or s'mores-ing these winter pieces are perfect. So much gear is required for a ski trip, no matter if it’s a week-long vacation or a weekend escape up to Marr's Mountain Cabin. From bulky ski boots to large pieces of outerwear, hard-to-pack helmets, and your actual equipment (skis, poles, and snowboards!). After mindfully maneuvering your duffle bags and car space with these sporty necessities, there may not be much room left for the most essential items of all—the gear and garb for those very important après-ski outfits. And even if you don’t plan on skiing at all, you can achieve the look in these three easy steps. 1. Head to Mountain Rentals; Whether you're a winter sport newbie or a seasoned pro, literally everything you can imagine is available to you in the retail shop. They have an incredible selection of snowboards, skis and more that are waiting to be taken on the mountainside. The

staff at Mountain Rentals is passionate about helping you find the right equipment for your needs. They will help you pick out the perfect gear for your skill level, body type and budget. 2. Buy what you like and what fits right; Start with a great ski jacket, one that has removable liners so you can use them together or separately depending on how warm you want to be. If you want to add some warmth under your jacket but still want to show off your cool new sweater, try layering a long-sleeve thermal underneath. Then, add accessories! A balaclava will keep you cozy without adding bulk and can add just enough color to make your outfit pop. And don't forget the right helmet—it'll help keep your head safe and warm without making you feel sweaty or uncomfortable. The reality is the mountains are beautiful, and you don’t need to be a skier to appreciate the snow-covered peaks, the forests, and the crisp alpine air. You don’t have to even look at a chairlift to have an excellent time. 3. Have fun! Realities For Children 20

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | A RTS + CULTURE

ARTICLE BY TYLER WESTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY CRAIG VOLLMER, CRYSTAL SMITH

When Craig Secher first set out on his crusade against child abuse 27 years ago, he never imagined how far his work might reach. All that really mattered was finding a way to do things better, shining a bright light on the problems he dealt with in his day-to-day as a case manager for child protective services. In the early days of Realities for Children, he remembers meeting with local leaders and business owners, trying to get what would become a revolutionary program off of the ground. One of those people was adamant that he would not be able to make an impact on such a large problem and Sechers response, though he admits he’s unsure of how he found the words, was a simple question. “How many children do I have to help to make this worth your support?” When confronted with uncomfortable issues like child abuse, we often turn a blind eye. We don't want to talk about it, so we try to pretend that it doesn't exist. But Realities for Children has a different approach. They continue to prompt us to confront these problems and ask ourselves, “How many can we help?” For Secher and the rest of the team at Realities, the answer seems to always be, “at least one more.” In pursuit of their goal, of making sure that no child is forgotten and fostering a holistic approach to upending the cycle of child abuse and providing lifelong support to their kids, Realities’ greatest asset is community. Throughout the year people find seemingly endless ways to apply their passions to this common goal. Whether it’s through world record-setting group events like the annual Realities Ride poker run or the individual donations that power the holiday NightLights display, there is no shortage of opportunities to make an impact in a child’s life. Over the holiday season, their work becomes even more important and is immediately supported by their month-long NightLights fundraiser, which was created as a direct response to the statistical rise in child abuse cases that historically comes at this time of year. Realities is preparing to serve upwards of 4,000 children in December alone. NightLights provides a particularly poignant example of their mission, the 50-foot blue light display has shined every December in Fort Collins for more than 25 years, providing a “beacon of hope” for affected children in our community and generating awareness - “lighting the darkness.” CONTINUED >

“Thank you for giving us a home! Because of Realities for Children, my mom, two sisters, and I are now in a safe home.”

While Secher has not yet succeeded in working himself out of a job, the efficacy and success of Realities for Children are apparent and the organization has received recognition both locally and on a national level. Their unique community collaboration approach enables Realities to guarantee every donated dollar goes directly to supporting children in need, an impact even furthered by their partnership with 40 other organizations in the area and ability to respond to any need almost immediately. From the moment emergency services arrive and on down the line as their kids move forward in life, Realities is there to provide support and a community of people who care and want to be a part of their success. While the lofty goal of eradicating child abuse may not feel much closer to Secher, the difference being made by Realities is all too evident. Hanging on office walls at the Realities for Children headquarters are thank you cards sent from the children, many of whom have grown to adulthood

since they first encountered the organization. Names have been removed to protect their identities but here are a few of the ‘thank you’s’ we’d like to share. • ”Thank you for giving us a home! Because of Realities for Children, my mom, two sisters, and I are now in a safe home. My mom left our home where my dad hurt us and when she did, even though she has a job, we didn’t have anything from our old house. Realities for Children helped us with food, supplies, beds, and everything we needed while we made our new safe home.” • ”After I was removed from my home, I went to live with my grandma. My grandma didn’t have much money and the shoes I had were too small. Realities for Children helped get me a pair of shoes in my size, new clothes, and even a bike! Thanks for helping me to feel like a normal kid.”

• ”Thank you for giving us our first Christmas! My children and I were homeless for several months due to domestic violence. When we received toys and clothes from the Realities for Children Santa’s Workshop, the kids said, ‘Thank you, this is the first normal Christmas we have ever had!’ As a parent, I thank you so much for this.” • -”I am 12 and because of Realities for Children, I am finally able to start feeling like a normal kid. I am a survivor of abuse since I was 7 years old. After a very hard year of many new homes and lots of difficult times in court, Realities for Children provided me with a recovery therapy package of special activities that has allowed me to focus on moving forward and just being a kid.” To donate to the Nightlights campaign this month, visit realitiesforchildren.com

20 Years of Eagles Hockey

HOW THE COLORADO EAGLES KEEP THE COMMUNITY IN THE RINK

ARTICLE BY TYLER WESTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE COLORADO EAGLES

24

G IV IN G BAC K | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

As the new year approaches we’re all ready to celebrate the progress we’ve made over the last 12 months and set our sights on the next set of goals. For the Colorado Eagles, this new year is especially important as they celebrate the organization’s 20th anniversary. First founded in 2003 by hockey legend Ralph Backstrom, the team's success and growth have seemed limitless and are only poised to continue, largely due to the dedication of players and front-office staff who’ve found their hockey home right here in Northern Colorado. When Ryan Bach first began his stint with the Colorado Eagles, there was no telling where his path might lead. As the first goaltender to play for the team, the opportunity to be a part of building a new franchise was not one every player sees. Since making the team's first stops in 2003, after playing eight seasons of professional hockey before landing with the Eagles, he’s run the gambit regarding positions within the organization. Goaltender, goaltending, assistant, and interim head coach, radio commentator, then finally arriving at his current position as the team’s President and Alternate Governor - Bach is again in a unique situation, celebrating his 20th anniversary with the team alongside the organization celebrating its twentieth birthday. Over his tenure, Bach has seen the team through championships on and off the ice, been

part of a league change, and was instrumental in fostering the team's affiliation with the Avalanche. “I think from day one I’ve been grateful for this Northern Colorado area and this community and how it’s evolved into where the organization is today,” Bach says of the atmosphere that’s kept him so long with the Eagles, a quality organization with a winning culture has allowed him to grow alongside the team. “Where this all started is really an anomaly. Being with the same team for 20 years is really something you don’t see that often in professional sports or professional hockey for that matter.”

Community support is key to the success of any sports organization and the Eagles are no exception. Acknowledging the importance of their community and fans is only a part of the equation, of course, another massive piece of the puzzle is making sure to give back. Whether it’s their Eagles Fight Cancer Weekend, the Teddy Bear Toss Night, or their Valentine's Sweetheart Night, the team partners consistently with local organizations to raise awareness and funds for important causes in our community. “I think it’s been a part of the fabric of the Colorado Eagles since day one,” Gavin Riches, the Eagles Executive Vice President says of the organization’s culture, “I think it’s really cool to see how it all comes together, it’s total buy-in from everyone.” When the Eagles do something for the community, it’s going to be big and it’s going to be fun, none of that would be possible if everyone involved wasn’t fully committed. Similar to Bach, Riches has also been with the Eagles for the entirety of their existence, though never in skates and pads. He was finishing his time at Colorado State University when the team first launched in 2003 and worked as an intern in their first season.

26

G IV IN G BAC K | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

“I had a chance to be a part of it from the ground up,” Riches says of the timing. He moved into their corporate development department in his second year with the team, eventually working up to his current role as Executive Vice President. Looking into the Eagles’ future, it’s clear that more good things are coming. Building through the ranks of professional leagues to now be a part of the American Hockey League, second only to the National Hockey League, and affiliating with the Avalanche provides a direct route for talented young players to reach the NHL and the national spotlight that comes with it. Growing in their presence and connection to the community has also created a loyal fan base that is excited to be a part of the culture. The Avalanche bringing the Stanley Cup back to Colorado last season has also sent echoes up the I-25 corridor, invigorating the team and fans alike. While none of us can predict what the next 20 years will look like, The Colorado Eagles' trajectory continues to point upward and is certain to continue providing top-tier hockey experiences for years to come.

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
