CENTERRA CONTINUES TO GROW AND STRENGTHEN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OUR COMMUNITY AND ENVIRONMENT
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SEPARATE THE CONCEPTS OF SUSTAINABILITY AND DEVELOPMENT. How cities and businesses choose to develop their communities plays an instrumental role in the natural environment. Luckily, Loveland and the surrounding region are in good hands thanks to environmentally conscious leaders like High Plains Environmental Center (HPEC) and Centerra. Centerra – a 3,000-acre master-planned community developed by McWhinney and located at I-25 and Hwy. 34 in Loveland – is Colorado’s first certified Community Wildlife Habitat. This unique designation is a National Wildlife Federation certification for projects that create multiple habitat areas in backyards, schoolyards, corporate properties, community gardens, parks, and other spaces. A key partner that helped McWhinney garner this certification was HPEC, which is located within Centerra. This urban environmentally friendly and outdoor living laboratory was the brainchild of Tom Hoyt, investment partner and mission advisor at McStain Neighborhoods. He envisioned a place where people could work and play while nature could simultaneously be restored.

SUSTAINING DEVELOPMENT & ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP (CONTINUED)
“You can’t talk about conservation on one hand and development on the other as if they were two unrelated issues, because they’re not,” Tom says. McWhinney co-founders and master developers of Centerra, Chad and Troy McWhinney, readily adopted this vision of preserving nature and restoring habitat by working with key partners to bring an eco-friendly and sustainable community strategy to life. Together, with the help of HPEC, they established 483 acres of open space and stormwater ponds within Centerra as a wildlife habitat that is accessible from sunrise to sunset, 365 days a year. The certified wild area includes 10 miles of trails with connection points to a regional trail system, two lakes – Houts Reservoir and Equalizer Lake – and is home to 150 different species of birds, fish, and mammals that flock to the preserved wetlands. When the environmental center was first created and the land was donated by McWhinney, the vast majority of HPEC land was weedy and disturbed agricultural land. One area was a literal dump and has since been cleaned up and restored. There is a variety of public education amenities to explore, such as HPEC’s Heirloom Fruit Orchard, Medicine Wheel Garden, a Native Plant Nursery, and the kid’s Wild Zone. Every plant and area has a unique story. Legend has it that some of these trees are descendants of Johnny Appleseed’s crop and others come from cuttings of Sir Isaac Newton’s tree (the one that’s responsible for gravity!). There’s also a native plant demonstration garden and a popular community garden where residents can plant seeds of their own. “These projects benefit native plants, wildlife, and people through the creation of sustainable landscapes that require little or no pesticides, fertilizers, or excess watering,” said Jim Tolstrup, the executive director of HPEC. “Few people realize how much habitat has been created and is maintained within Centerra.” HPEC, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, is located in the heart of The Lakes

SCOTT
STALLINGS’
WORKOUT ARTICLE CITY LIFESTYLE
SCOTT STALLINGS DISCOVERED HIS INTEREST IN GOLF AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 3. But it was the “aha moment” for his love of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors. Little did he know at the time, however, not just how successful he would become, but also how an unforeseen health compromise would also rock his world, and his cross training, for the better. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer. Flash forward to the year 2016: It became a life-changing year he never would have anticipated; one filled with strife as he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete. With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night. Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed. Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life. “You only get one body,” he says. “Golf is a grind, but don’t let physicality get in the way of your game,” Scott says.

TREND SETTER (CONTINUED)
SCOTT’S TOP EXERCISES
KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH: Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing.
KETTLEBELL HALO: Start by holding the kettlebell upside down at chest height, then lift the weight to head height and rotate it around the head like a halo in both directions. This exercise focuses on shoulder mobility—which is important for a good golf swing—and warms up the muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder girdle.
CLEAN TO LUNGE: First, the kettlebell is lifted from the ground to shoulder height. Then, the foward lunge loads weight into the legs one at a time, which happens from the backswing to the downswing. The exercise increases strength in calves and forearms, which is essential for a powerful swing.
LANDMINES: LANDMINE RAINBOW: Tracing the shape of a rainbow, take the barbell down alongside each hip in a rotational movement and then back to an overhead position. Strengthens legs, shoulders and arms; improves coordination for ground-up downswing. LANDMINE ROTATIONAL CLEAN AND PRESS: Facing the landmine, hold the bar in your right hand, then pivot your toes 90 degrees to the left, dropping into a deep lunge while still holding the bar with your straight arm. Press into your front foot and stand up as you press and lift the barbell to chest height, all in one quick motion. From the waist down, this move mimics the look of a golfer finishing a swing. LANDMINE THRUSTER: Thrust the barbell upward from a squat position. Builds lower-body muscles, which are key for the start of the ground swing and to get longer off the tee. 32

T H E D O C T OR IS IN WHAT ARE HEALTH AREAS THAT ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED THAT MEN SHOULD ASK THEIR DOCTOR ABOUT? Two main things to monitor are estrogen levels and red blood cell (RBC) counts. Testosterone can convert into estrogen, which can create anxiety as well as magnify sexual dysfunction in men. If RBCs get too high, they can distress the small vessels in the body, including those around the kidneys and the ones that return blood to the heart. Both of these concerns can be easily monitored by your doctor with testing. WHAT ARE SOME RISK FACTORS FOR LOW TESTOSTERONE? Abdominal fat and high sugar/carb intake are the two largest modifiable risk factors for low testoster-
