TAKE A LOOK, IT'LL BE GONE. Life is about appreciating the people around us. Spending quality time with family and friends is the greatest gift you can give and the greatest gift you can receive. This issue is all about ways in which one can capitalize on the great gift of time this holiday season. It may be setting everything aside to help make dinner with your family. It may be sitting down to make something out of your own two hands. Or perhaps, even spending the last few minutes of the day together, just to be in each

Bells of Peace Honor Veterans and Tradition Veterans and community members came together to ring bells throughout Loveland at 4 a.m. on Veterans Day. Why so early? 4 a.m. in Loveland is 11 a.m. in Paris, the place and time where World War I officially ended. The Bell Ringer tradition began with two Loveland veteran brothers, Wayne and Harry Bath, and a 500-pound school bell in the back of their truck in 1956. Photography | Kristi Dressler

That perfect gift could be an experience, an adventure in health and wellness, or a relaxing activity that reduces the stressors in life. Most importantly, we recommend focusing on the gifts that give perspective and etch memories that will never be forgotten. You might not know, but your gift of love and happiness in the present moment to any person can be with them for a long time in the future. GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR OUR YOUTH
IT’S ABOUT TIME! WHO HAS TIME? I NEED MORE TIME!
However you express it, time is a valuable commodity that feels like a scarcity for many of us more often than not. As hard as we try to stretch it, there are only 24 hours in the day, which makes how we
THREE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE CHANGED THE LIVES OF STUDENTS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THOMPSON EDUCATION FOUNDATION
choose to prioritize and utilize our time so significant. This month we’re featuring three people who have gifted their time in understated ways that pay significant dividends to the people who benefit from it. Each program that these individuals lead is in partnership with the Thompson Education Foundation (TEF), a 501(c)3, that provides educational opportunities to students and teachers in the Thompson School District.
Dr. Stan Scheer SCHEER KINDNESS Dr. Stan Scheer, former superintendent of Thompson School District, had a heart for supporting people in direct and indirect ways that were usually discreet and did not draw attention. Sadly, Dr. Scheer passed away suddenly in December 2020, but his legacy of generosity has continued through the establishment of the Dr. Stan Scheer Memorial Student Opportunity Fund. The program provides support for individual students who have a personal financial need related to a TSD approved or sponsored program, activity, or opportunity. “Dr. Scheer was known for making time to support others,” says Kim Akeley - Charron, TEF Executive Director. “He cared about the social and emotional success of staff and students.” Time and again he would quietly observe in the background and notice when a student or teacher had a financial need. He would literally reach into his own pocket and give what was needed. Taking the time to be generous was part and parcel to who he was. The Dr. Stan Scheer Memorial Student Opportunity Fund aims to fill the gap when other funding sources are not available. Examples of support provided in the fund’s inaugural year include marching band fees, sports equipment costs, and the purchase of letter jackets. Each provision represents a tangible way to recognize and celebrate a student’s accomplishment, or to inspire passion and personal growth. Any TSD district, school, or coaching staff can complete the online application in support of a student with a financial need. For more information or to make a donation, go to www.thompsontef.org/donate. 24

Tracy Roller
PROJECT PROM www.projectpromcolorado.com
PROMPTED TO DO SOMETHING Tracy Roller loves to shop for prom wear with her teenagers. In fact, she thinks every young person should have the experience of getting dressed up for a fun and memorable night and going to prom. She’s also conscious of how expensive prom can be and that the cost may prohibit some students from participating. That’s why, after seeing a free prom dress program offered in Denver, she thought, “someone should really do this in Loveland!” Apparently, she was the someone who was up for the task of giving her time to offer free dresses, tuxedos, and accessories to teens who can’t otherwise afford it. In spring 2020, Roller instituted Project Prom (www.projectpromcolorado.com), a fund under the auspices of TEF. As you can imagine, Roller put a lot of leg work into collecting and organizing nearly 2,000 dresses and menswear items for the program. She hopes that as awareness increases, Project Prom will become a permanent fixture in the Loveland community. Teens can peruse the inventory by calling or emailing to make an appointment. She’s also leaning towards a one-day event in the spring of 2022 dedicated to teens in need of prom attire. The new and gently used dresses and accessories are donated from individuals and from Bella, another dress organization in the Denver area. Donations of dresses, accessories, and cash are welcomed, and as Tracy says, “even very small donations help.” CONTINUED >

GIVING BACK

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have
Anna Sarol
otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy

Electric Gift Ideas
TOP 5 ALL-ELECTRIC GIFTS F O R T H E H O L I D AY S
Electric appliances and outdoor power equipment can make great gifts during the holidays. Whether it’s for your tech-junky relative, a cost-conscious spouse, or just a little something special for yourself, check out these gift ideas! Don’t forget PVREA members can apply for rebates to save extra this holiday season. 1. E-BIKE
4. TRIMMER
Pack up your picnic basket or load your shopping bags, either way you can cover serious miles with extra luggage. Or use it for an extra boost up that steep hill!
2. CHAINSAW Forget about the extra trip to get gas, or having to mix your oil. Just plug and play with this handy all-around tool. Different sizes to meet your needs!
3. SNOW BLOWER Talk about giving the gift of time! Ditch the shovel and go all-electric. But be wary, you might be clearing your neighbor’s drive too!
They’re lighter, they’re quieter, and they’ll make a great gift for a loved one. Look for a brand that offers other electric outdoor power equipment to collect the whole set.
5. LAWN MOWER You’ll definitely notice a difference in how quiet they are. But don’t let that fool you, these will definitely get the job done around the house.
