Introduction

In 1877, Loveland’s tourist industry shifted into high gear. The railroad coming into Loveland eliminated a good portion of a long and bone-jarring trip from Denver to Estes Park. Businesses popped up around Loveland to make the trip even more convenient. Hotels, such as the Lovelander Hotel, and livery stables, such as Overholt & Stiffler, provided resting spots. They also provided transportation into Rocky Mountain National Park up the old route. This route followed First Street west over Bald Mountain. It was a four and a half hour trip up the mountain to Estes Park and a three and a half hour trip back.

RIALTOTHEATERCENTER.ORG

As traffic between Loveland and Estes Park dramatically increased, a new road was built directly through the Big Thompson Canyon. Completed in 1905, this newly cut road once again created opportunities for businesses in Loveland. Hotels, campgrounds, guest ranches, gift shops, restaurants and filling stations popped up along Highway 34 providing needed services supporting this booming tourist corridor.

THE LEGACY OF THE PROUD AMERICAN VETERANS’ (PAMVETS) FLOURISHING COMMUNITY

IT ALL STARTED IN A BOOTH IN THE WEST EISENHOWER MCDONALD’S THIRTEEN YEARS AGO. World War II veteran Virgil Horton met with other veterans for conversation and camaraderie ARTICLE BRAD HOOPES PHOTOGRAPHY FLOURISH BRANDING PHOTOGRAPHY

over mugs of steaming coffee. As he saw other veterans come into the restaurant, he invited them to join the group. He reiterated his philosophy often: “No veteran should ever sit alone.” Like so many of the Greatest Generation, Virgil has since passed, but his legacy lives at the Loveland Golden Corral. Every Saturday morning a stream of veterans stretches out of Golden Corral’s door and into the parking lot. What started as a core group of five now has anywhere from 100-130 veterans at breakfast each week. They call their group PAMVETS, which stands for Proud American Veterans. The group hypothesizes that 1,000 different veterans have attended a PAMVETS breakfast throughout the years.

22

Loveland + South Lifestyle | November 2021

The group likes to keep it casual. Their meetings don’t follow a rigid structure, and there are no appointed leadership positions, dues, or rules other than Virgil’s staple: no veteran sits alone. The breakfast starts with the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, birthday and anniversary wishes, the welcoming of newcomers, and a few veteran-oriented announcements. Then it’s off to the chow line! Leading the charge to the food are characters like Dave Landers, George Norton, and Gene Tunbull. That’s because World War II veterans are always called first, followed by Korean, Vietnam, Cold War, and present conflict veterans. Laughter wafts continually throughout the room as stories are shared amongst the different eras, wars, and branches. Throughout the course of breakfast, veterans often discover that they served in the same unit or sailed on the same ship. Now granted, the needle often sits off the scale in the red zone on the Bravo Sierra meter with many of these conversations, but that is part of the fun of it all. Veterans appreciate that they can share common experiences with people who understand. They leave with nourished bellies and souls. The light and easy-going mornings are built upon a heavier foundation of sacrifice, patriotism, honor, and deep respect. It doesn’t matter if a veteran stormed a beach or spent their entire time in the service peeling potatoes. Everyone in the room respects the common bond of service and sacrifice to America. decided to do the same for his hometown veterans.

The waiting list is at least that long, and it’s growing!

Loveland + South Lifestyle | November 2021

The presentation of these statues give long-withheld recognition to veterans. When considering history, WWII veterans came home and moved on with life without much fanfare. Korean War veterans have been coined The Forgotten Veterans. Many Vietnam veterans were treated shamefully, being spat on and called malicious names when they returned home. Gulf War veterans share a similar reputation with Korean veterans. So, many of them get emotional when they’re actually praised for their service. For some, it is the very first time their service has been acknowledged. PAMVETS meets every Saturday morning at the Golden Corral that’s located off of Highway 34/Eisenhower Blvd at 1360 Sculptor Drive in east Loveland across from Lowe’s. The doors open at 9 a.m., and the cost for the all-you-can-eat style breakfast buffet is $10 plus tip. To learn more about Veterans Honoring Veterans and how you can nominate a veteran for a statue (or help with a much-welcomed tax-deductible donation), you can go to their website: www.veteranshonoringveterans.org, their Facebook page: Facebook.com/ NoCoVHV, or by calling 970- 481-9640. Mention Loveland + South Lifestyle when you donate and they will purchase a statue in support of your donation, up to 50 statues.

RICH HOW RICH RASMUSSEN FROM TRIPLE R BUILDERS USES HIS ROUNDABOUT CREATIVITY TO HELP PEOPLE BUILD THE HOMES OF THEIR DREAMS

RICH RASMUSSEN DOESN’T LIKE TO BE THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. The general contractor and owner of Triple R Builders prefers to stay out of the limelight; however, it’s hard not to stare when you see ARTICLE AMY HALLAGAN

his one-of-a-kind builds like the recently completed ‘Silo Project.’ Rich was eager to partner with the homeowner’s unique vision of

joining two side-by-side grain silos to create her dream home. All it took was a bit of curiosity and creativity, and Rich was all in. He relishes the chance to do something that few, if any, have done before. “I don’t follow the crowd. I gravitate towards the ‘one-of-a-kind’ projects. [With the Silo Project] I could envision the finished project, and it was an absolute ‘yes’ for me,” says Rich.

28

Loveland + South Lifestyle | November 2021

From the start Rich could taste the sweet satisfaction of accomplishing such a challenging feat. He’s keen on projects that many builders would turn down due to complexity or difficulty. That’s the presiding attribute that differentiates Rich from the crowd - he’s never met a construction challenge he didn’t like. He’s always looking for something interesting or different, and the silo project certainly fits the bill. “This is the signature build of my whole life. I’ve achieved something using what I’ve learned and what God gave me - skills, knowledge, experience, and a drive to work hard,” he says. THE CHALLENGE Rich’s 17 years of building experience layered atop of early work on his family’s farm and his three college degrees have taught him a thing or two about planning, problem solving, and hard work. Those skills were useful in the silo project given the perplexing task of fitting a build to a circular frame.

OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED)

“Everything in this project was circular or curved; the walls, kitchen, stairway, ceiling, and more were all custom cut and made to curve,” he says. Hours were spent researching ways in which he could duplicate the exterior of the silo on the interior rounded ceiling. Inspired by a copper canopy at Flatiron Steel in Greeley, he was able to partner with this local supplier to create a one-of-a-kind ceiling. Every obstacle helped him to learn something new, and he even had to defy nature on a few things (such as successfully bending a 2x10 board.) “I would lay awake at night thinking about how to make something work, and God would give me an idea to resolve the obstacle,” he recalls. THE REWARD Rich is deeply thankful for the opportunity to be part of this unique and challenging project. It was gratifying to overcome the dilemmas of this extraordinary, roundabout build. “It’s cool to do something that blows people’s minds!” Rich says. However, satisfaction isn’t the sole motivator for Rich. He’s passionate about using his talents and skills to help people bring their dreams to fruition. 30

Loveland + South Lifestyle | November 2021

“Together we achieved her dream, and mine as well,” he reflects. “Sometimes people develop a lot of fear around designing the home of their dreams. I try to alleviate their fears and figure out a way to make it happen. It’s not rocket science, it’s achievable.” Rich puts his heart into every project as if it were his own, which gives his customers peace of mind. He considers himself a straight shooter who does what he says he’s going to do. It’s no wonder that his tagline is, “If you can dream it, we can build it.” While there have been times when he felt like he was holding onto a rope and bouncing over the rocks, Rich says, “I always have faith in the provision.” He attributes his success to a lot of prayer and God’s guidance through it all, saying, “God has been driving and directing me my whole life, and I’m thankful for all of it.” Rich Rasmussen Triple R Builders, Inc. 1852 Hillrose Drive, Loveland 970-231-9029 www.TripleRBuilders.net
