I’m in the LEGO stage of life. My son spends hours snapping together odd shaped blocks—building tiny towns and tiny cars and teeny tiny people with even teenier tinier accessories (it’s no cliché—my bare feet never understood sheer pain until I stepped on one). He enjoys the process of creating something—then he stands back, admires the fruits of his labor, and usually comes and finds me to show off his latest masterpiece. I don’t think that we ever outgrow this desire to build, create, make something better, and then beam with pride when the task or project is complete. This issue is evidence of that. In the following pages, we feature men who have built something tangible—a revolutionary shoe, a towering balloon arch, an ice-cold brew, a sunny spot to lounge on a new deck. We also feature men who have built the intangible—a new business, an exciting event. And we highlight one special young man whose family built a foundation to help spread awareness of an important issue after his sudden loss. Builders, creators, visionaries—you’ll find them all here. They had the drive, dedication and motivation to make something better, and I bet you a dollar more than half of them got the building bug by playing with LEGO.

Residents Rally Behind Loveland’s First Independent Filmmakers’ Showcase
ARTICLE BY JILL CLARK PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J. CAPPS
An inspired idea can blossom into something extraordinary when it’s nurtured by a passionate community. The upcoming Loveland Shorts Film Festival is proof, thanks to the community spirit rallying behind one resident’s vision.
Gary Giver, local and Loveland Stage Company board member, dreamed up the concept for the city’s inaugural film festival. “I was looking for opportunities for the Stage Company, which is unused for 130 days a year,” he explains. “I’ve always been interested in independent films, so I thought, ‘Why not try a film festival?’ ”

Why not indeed. After gaining enthusiastic support from the mayor and city manager, Gary partnered with Dan Peterson—another local and Loveland Legacy Foundation board member. They assembled a team, sought guidance from area filmmakers and festival organizers, and got the entire thing rolling. Gary’s idea now promises to be an exciting community event, one the organizers hope will become an annual tradition.
“Planning is going very well,” Gary offers, while Dan points out the project that began with zero budget encountered a few challenges. “We realized the live theater venue no longer had a screen or projector equipment, which are expensive, so that was one of our first huge hurdles.” The team was disheartened, but concern quickly faded.
“With sponsorships and generous donations from residents wanting to support the festival, we reached our fundraising goal for new equipment. People in the community have been so gracious.” Just one year later, the celebration of filmmaking is only two months away from its debut.
Organizers are thrilled about what the new event means for Loveland. “Culturally, it exposes residents to new voices and perspectives.” Gary smiles to include, “Plus it adds to the city’s reputation as a cool, creative town.”
Set for August 2–4, attendees can expect the film festival to be a riveting experience with something for everyone. In fact, Gary and Dan hope to attract attendees across all ages and interests. “At 20 minutes long, films
you wouldn’t initially be drawn to become more digestible. Any film blocks that contain mature language or content will be flagged and separated for age-appropriate viewing.”
Gary is excited for audiences to discover what he’s already seen in the submitted films. “Many of the independent films and student submissions have far surpassed my expectations,” he says.
So far, more than 80 shorts have been submitted from as far away as Moscow. “Our goal is to receive 100 submissions,” Dan explains. “We plan to show around 40 shorts.”
Budding filmmakers can still submit their work until June 20th. Organizers are looking for shorts in categories including documentary, adventure, fantasy, horror, romance, high school, drama, and comedy. After the deadline, judges will finalize the films, categories, and curated groups of screenings—or blocks—to be included.
Expect to be surprised and delighted throughout the festival weekend, with coffee happy hours, 1.5–2-hour screening blocks, and three expert-led workshops: Filmmaking 101, Makeup for Horror Movies, and Using Drones in Filmmaking
It’s lights, camera, action Loveland-style at the historic Loveland Stage Company. Additional schedule details, the latest updates, submission instructions, ticketing information and more are online now.

DECKED-OUT UPGRADES AND BACKYARD PROJECTS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR HOME
Spending time with family—it’s what summer is really all about, right? And what better place to relax and enjoy than your own home, especially outside. Is your patio or deck up to summertime snuff? Maybe it’s time to take a look—think big, dream bigger. Then let Holmes Custom Renovations take everything to a whole new level.
Ian Holmes founded the company in 2003 with a vision to become a regional industry leader rooted in professional ability, ethical practices, and a solid reputation as a trustworthy contractor. Ian, his wife, Lori, and daughter, Adriana, have all contributed significantly to the company’s growth during that time. Their focus? Community—it’s prioritized in the work they do, and a number of satisfied clients happily report how impactful that work has been.
“We’re building lasting relationships,” the team shares. “Based on trust, respect, integrity and commitment.”

PROJECT: STAIRWAY TO HEAVENLY
Client: Bob Lonsway
“The Holmes team was a delight to work with,” Bob says. “Everyone we encountered was very responsive, helpful, and flexible with our questions and changes. They kept us informed and went above and beyond every day—patiently putting up with our special requests and lists.”
The project Bob’s referencing was the addition of a section to an existing second-story deck, “which we did with a custom spiral staircase that connected it to the lower level,” reports Noah Elmore, Project Consultant. “This addition allowed for easy access to both levels in a tight space where a traditional staircase would not have been possible.”
Noah says the Lonsway family was an amazing team to collaborate with. “We had several meetings where we brainstormed ideas to bring their vision to life. They already had a fantastic outdoor living space, and they trusted us to enhance it even further,” he explains.
“We were very pleased with the final result,” Bob shares. “It’s a stunning and fabulous addition to our home, one that will last a lifetime!”

PROJECT: FULL-SCALE RETREAT
Client: Ivan and Judy Pusecker
Ivan happily reports that his project—a finished deck—“exceeded our expectations,” adding that it “was just what we hoped for.” Ivan cites thorough communication as one of the team’s greatest assets.
“They always kept me informed, with high standards and professional systems and procedures,” he says. “The construction crew treated our property like their own, and we’re very happy with the finished deck.”
Noah points out that Ivan and Judy were a pleasure to work with right from the beginning. “One afternoon, Ivan personally visited our showroom to inquire about how to get on our schedule and discuss reviving his existing deck. After meeting with him and Judy, we helped them choose the ideal materials and colors to rejuvenate their deck,” Noah says.
“Now, it’s the perfect spot for them to enjoy each other’s company … right in their amazing new backyard retreat.”

PROJECT: POOLSIDE PARADISE
Client: Dave and Janice Mills
Dave and Janice were impressed with the Holmes crew’s “professionalism, quality of work, regular communication, the time taken, and the end result,” Dave smiles.
The couple needed to replace a pergola, with a better covered structure to protect against the rain and improve sun shelter. “We also wanted to minimize light lost in the main house,” he says, “and maintain an open feel to the structure. All were achieved.”
“Working with Dave and Janice was truly a rewarding experience,” Lori says. “They wanted to be able to enjoy their pool/patio space, rain or shine, without having a screened-in porch.”
Dave points out that the team’s attention to detail was superb. “I was kept included in any discussions that required immediate solutions—that was reassuring,” he says. “We received exactly what we were expecting and are very happy with the outcome.”
Helping neighbors realize their visions is important at Holmes, Lori says.
“It’s fun to get to know our clients and help them think through their vision,” she says. “At the same time knowing that because we’re using state-of-the-art material that will stand up to the crazy weather we have, they won’t have to do this project again in 10 years. The ability to help solve problems in a creative way that will last is what Holmes is all about.”

Even as a very young man, Krishna Nelson showed an entrepreneurial spirit, teaching swim lessons and tutoring other children in a variety of subjects. Then, in 2017, while a freshman at UC’s business school, he partnered with a friend to expand his balloon décor business, USA Balloonatics, from Miami University in Oxford to the Greater Cincinnati market—put simply, it blew up, quickly outgrowing their original location.
A COLORFUL STORY TO TELL
In the years since, Krishna has graduated from college, taken sole ownership of USA Balloonatics as his profession, and transformed the business into the city’s premier choice for balloon décor. There’s also a thriving companion company founded with a former college roommate, Alisander Schmid (Totally Lit Events rents handcrafted, oversized marquee letters) with plans to expand to Dayton. As such, USA Balloonatics is the only local company to combine balloon décor, marquee letters, and backdrops for easy, one-stop, celebration-worthy convenience.

Balloon bouquets, garlands, arches, mosaics, columns, walls, sculptures … you really need see it for yourself to get the complete picture (hint: check their online gallery and socials). They’re genuine experts at designing something colorful and captivating for any occasion and any budget. Pair the balloons with up-to-4' lighted marquee letters, and wow. Just wow.
IN GOOD COMPANY
If you can think of an event that could be made brighter and more fun by balloon décor, Krishna’s got it covered. Birthdays, baby showers, graduations, weddings, holidays, corporate events, anything and everything both indoors and out. And the list of USA Balloonatics’ clients is impressive: from everyday parents and parties to prominent local businesses, like Fifth Third Bank, Procter & Gamble, and Jeff Ruby’s (we even partnered with Krishna for our own Loveland Lifestyle anniversary event). As for the work that has scored big with Krishna personally? That’s easy. The Bengals Babies installation—a combined baby shower for a sizable group of Cincinnati Bengals players and their wives at one of their homes.
CHECK YOUR CALENDAR
We all have an endless stream of events and celebrations continually filling up our phones (our lives). See what’s next on your schedule and give Krishna a call. Doing It For Jack
On September 20, 2021, Loveland local Jack Quehl lost his life to fentanyl poisoning. Heartbreaking as that is, this isn’t just another tragic tale; it’s one filled with hope. Jack’s parents are hoping his story will educate others in the community, and his death will inspire a ripple effect—through education, one lost life can save countless others from a senseless death.
Jack Quehl was your All-American boy “with a twist,” which is exactly how his parents Tom and Stephanie Quehl describe him. Jack was into football and sports, but he also enjoyed reading books on Chinese economics. He kept a journal written in Portuguese. “He was a guy’s guy, but he was really smart. He was quiet. In fifth grade, his principal came up to me to tell me he was smart,” Stephanie reminisces of Jack’s early years.

For high school, Jack attended Moeller—he played football, but his academic ability was also obvious. A National Honor Society member and National Merit Scholar, he continued to foster his love of reading and was always striving for more. He went on to attend the University of South Carolina, which took Jack all across the world through their study abroad program. “He traveled to three different countries over three semesters, and that’s where his obsession with travel came from,” Tom explains.
It was the height of COVID when Jack graduated from college. “Jack worked remotely for a year from our home,” Stephanie smiles. “If not for the pandemic, he never would have come home. We loved that year with our kid, and the irony that he’s not with us makes that time more special.” After working remotely for a start-up, Jack moved to Baltimore in August of 2021. That Labor Day, the whole family got together on the East Coast, including youngest brother Adam, enjoying a weekend of family fun to visit both Jack and middle brother Tyler, who was living in Philly. “Usually we wouldn’t have brought Adam with us,” Stephanie says as she remembers that trip. “But it felt like God’s hand was at play in the story, and I said to Tom, ‘Adam needs to see where his brothers are living.’ We’re forever grateful he got to be with us that weekend because it was the last one we saw Jack.”
"We're still trying to piece together what happened the night Jack lost his life to fentanyl," Stephanie continues, somber, remembering the call that changed everything. "Jack had been taken to Maryland Medical Center—Tyler was already there, but things didn't look good." Stephanie and Tom hurried to Baltimore. "In my head, it was no big deal. In my head, my kid was going to be fine." Stephanie recounts those hours leading up to arriving in Baltimore. "It's a 10-hour drive … Tom and I drove it in 9. We were so numb. We just kept driving and praying and holding onto hope, but I've never been more sick to my stomach in my life."
"When we made it to the hospital, they were trying to tell us we needed to say goodbye. The medical team had done everything they could," Stephanie recounts.
“When we talk about Jack being Top 10 academically in his high school class and being athletic, we were proud of him—we like to brag about that,” explains Tom. “But it’s also the fact that you can be as smart and athletic as you want ... fentanyl knows no boundaries.” Jack had a fantastic job that he loved, was living on his own independently, and one mistake was grave for him.
JACK QUEHL
Losing a child is one of the greatest losses, and while Stephanie and Tom were surrounded by family and friends, it was a hard time. “We were both recluses,” remembers Tom. “I didn’t want to eat. I didn’t get out of bed. Then one morning, Stephanie got up and said we needed to do something. We needed to educate people about the dangers of fentanyl so that no one else loses their Jack. And that’s how the Do it for Jack organization started.”
Now, through their Jack Quehl Foundation, Stephanie and Tom spend their time traveling the Loveland and Cincinnati areas educating people on fentanyl. They talk to high schools and businesses, because the target demographic of those dying from fentanyl poisoning is age 18 to 45. They want everyone to be aware of what fentanyl is, why it’s so deadly, and how we can combat it in our community.
CONTINUED > 35 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/LOVELAND JUNE 2024
Do It For Jack also wants to educate adults so that they can educate their kids. “We experienced such a terrible tragedy, and us speaking about it goes a long way,” Tom explains about the difference they hope to make with Do It For Jack. “It makes a difference to both the children and the parents … because as a son or daughter, when you make a decision like this, it doesn’t just affect you, it affects your loved ones—they’re the ones who have to carry the grief. And as a parent, they can put themselves in our
shoes and see our grief, see that this could happen to their sons or daughters. That’s why our message is so strong—it’s happened to too many parents.”
Save the date: June 12–16 for Fentanyl Awareness Week in Loveland. Visit the foundation website for more information on the week’s Celebration of Jack.

GETTING EDUCATED
“We didn’t know what fentanyl did,” Stephanie shares about the importance of communities, companies and schools being better informed. “Now, we want to be the premier resource for fentanyl education. Why wait to find out? Why wait to be prepared? Train everybody now to be safe. Reach out to us, and we’ll be there to help.”
And that’s what the Jack Quehl Foundation is all about: to pass on this message, stay informed and aware. Share stories, save lives. They do it for Jack. Now, what will you do?

Loveland’s Newest Brewery and Taproom, Serving Up Cold, Crushable, Craft Beer
ARTICLE BY LISA FLETCHER PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE MEINBERG
Are the balmy early-summer days already making you dream of cold, refreshing, frosty adult beverages? If so, DVD Brew, a brand-new 5 BBL brewhouse and craft brewery—just off Loveland Madeira Road—is ready to quench your summertime thirst.
Owner and Brewhaus/Taphaus namesake Dana Vaughn Depenbrock has turned a 25-year passion for home brewing into his retirement dream. His goal is simple—to provide a beer for all tastes. And with more than 20 original brews on tap, he’s already on his way.
“We set out on a mission to share a love for craft beer with others,” explains Bobby King, DVD general manager. “We want this to be a hometown place where folks can come for a brew and hang out with their family and friends.”
And it was here in Loveland that they found that hometown vibe. “Dana wanted to find a place that would encompass what he was about and give his brews a good home,” says Bobby. “We’re right in between downtown Loveland and 275, making it the perfect location for our new brewery and taproom.”
The former Johnny’s Car Wash location has had a complete transformation, with an expansive bar, large wooden high-tops, roll-up doors, outside seating, and walls filled with TVs and an eclectic mix of memorabilia that Dana has collected over the years. And while there are no current plans to open a kitchen, customers will be happy to know there will be a rotating mix of food trucks on hand every day. Not to mention plenty of parking, Singo nights, music trivia and an FC Cincinnati pub partnership. Cheers to that, right?
HOT SPOT | FOOD + BEVERAGE
40
Leading the charge from the brew deck is Keith Stark, DVD’s head brewmaster and the man behind the beer. But with so many tasty brews, all cleverly named after Dana’s family and friends, where does one start? Bobby suggests starting with the Gabby Ale—dark in color but actually a light and refreshing brew. The most requested beers on tap are the Chuckie Czech Pilsner and Mama Hen’s IPA. And Bobby’s personal favorite? “I love Walt’s White IPA, a newer brew that is amazing. But I haven’t found a beer I didn’t enjoy.” After our visit on a perfectly sunny afternoon, neither did we.
Their full list of on-tap beers is always online. Or better yet, grab a friend, a shady spot on the brew patio, and check it out for yourself.

WHEN THE ATHLETIC INDUSTRY CAN’T COMBINE A HIGH-PERFORMING ROAD SHOE WITH A HIGHPERFORMING TRAIL SHOE, SEND IN THE MARINES
I met Alan Parvis at 0530 on a Sunday morning in Nisbet Park. Actually, that’s not true. I rolled in around 0535, which, by Alan’s internal Marine Corps clock, made me 20 minutes late.
My internal USMC clock was unplugged years ago, but some of the jargon and the cadence still marches around in my grape (that’s my head for you civilians). So, listen up! This is the debrief of one Leatherneck’s training with another.
Parvis issued me a pair of GoFasters, the shoe he created to change the athletic industry (yes, change). The reflective laces allowed me to easily tie them in the dark. No sooner did I finish the last knot and we shoved off
He doesn’t remember when he wanted to become a Marine. The moment might have happened in the womb for this Loveland local.
“I’ve got pictures when I was a young kid of a private in dress blues at my birthday party. I wanted a Marine to be there.”
What he didn’t know then was that his parents had called the local recruiter and asked if any Marines might be interested in some free chow, a little cake and ice cream.
A week after his 17th birthday, Parvis enlisted. Leaving the day he graduated high school. Off he went to boot camp.
And off we went up East Broadway Street. Thank God for the narrow sidewalks. I was able to run behind him and hide the snot pouring out my nose and the dazed expression on my face. I tried to ask difficult questions to keep him talking, slow him down. But getting out the word “Afghanistan” was worse for me than John Travolta’s pronunciation of Idina Menzel.
It was at the Helmand Province base camp in Afghanistan where Parvis first realized the running shoe industry lacked adaptability. A trait necessary for high-speed military operators.
CONTINUED > 45 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/LOVELAND JUNE 2024
“I was running with my team in the mornings,” Parvis remembers. “I was beating the heck out of my road shoes [running shoes designed for pavement] on those gravel roads.”
My performance up East Broadway was unsat. My chest hurt. My calves hurt. My thighs burned. But my feet felt amazing. The shoe’s mesh material hugged them and provided incredible flexibility. The cushion around my ankles and heels eliminated any uncomfortable rubbing, which has never happened to me with a running shoe’s first-time wear. The front design provided me with a soothing toe box on steep terrain.
Parvis has the perfect pedigree for a shoe developer. He has brains. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Salisbury University, a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Cincinnati.
He also has brawn. He trains for and competes in ultramarathons, triathlons, and other endurance races. He knows that nothing in the shoe market can properly support a single run over multiple surfaces. There are road shoes and there are trail shoes. And never the twain had met.
Parvis’ GoFasters crack the code. We turned left just past St. Columban and ran into the tree line. I could hear the crackles of the gravel under my feet, and as we ran deeper into the wooded area, I could hear the snaps of the twigs … but I couldn’t feel a thing.
Marine, you better explain yourself!
“We gave the shoe more coverage on the bottom from an outsole perspective, but we kept the tread pretty minimal,” Parvis sounded off. “Then we positioned a plate between the outsole and midsole.”
Outstanding, Marine! At ease
That plate on the bottom of my GoFasters not only protected against the rocks, but it provided a little bit of propulsion. The rigidity of the plate delivered spring action in my step and the positioning of the plate gave me the comfort of the full midsole foam underneath my feet.
My run back down the hill was pleasant. Sure, in part because I was no longer gasping for air, but also because my feet weren’t sliding in the shoe and my toes felt ...
Let me explain. My toes are a colossal SNAFU. Some are twisted and bent. When I run, I have to use the foam toe separators provided by nail salons. I did not wear them on the morning Parvis took me through his combat conditioning course, or as he called it, his 3-mile warmup. And I didn’t need to. My feet were the only part of my body that didn’t hurt.
Parvis and his small crew are creating the final prototype, which means they’re close to the manufacturing phase. But customers can go to their website now and sign up for offers and updates and for an invitation to order. Pro tip: you should. Give those socials a follow while you’re at it.
I think Alan drove off for another workout. I went back home and hit the rack

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.
A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.
SOMETHING SWEET
This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.
SOMETHING TANGY
Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.
SOMETHING SPICY
This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.
SOMETHING LIQUID
It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.
SOMETHING TOMATO
You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.
THE SPICE COMBINATION
This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.
HOMEMADE
BBQ SAUCE

• 1 cup water
• 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

• 1/2 tablespoon black pepper
• 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
• 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
DIRECTIONS
In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.

Perfecting Your Golf Swing
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT
Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
GET ACTIVE | SPORTS + RECREATION 52
01. Get
fit for equipment.
If you are buying clubs off the rack, you aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.
02. Get good golf instruction, REGULARLY.
We’ve all heard someone say, “I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons from a PGA certified pro, not just one lesson. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course. Years ago, golf instructors started instruction with chipping and putting and then graduated to the driver. Now, instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first. My friend regularly outdrives me by 50 yards, but my ball is in the hole first most of the time because of my training and practice on the short game.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
03.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz
Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella
Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs
Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
Practice your short game every day.
04.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
