My daughter recently asked me what we’re doing this summer. Usually we jam-pack our June, July and August with travel—suitcases packed, ready to jet set or hit the open road. But we got a little burned out (literally and figuratively) last summer, so we’re keeping it low-key and local this time around.
I almost replied “not much” when she first asked me that question, but then I paused ... because that’s not really true. There’s so much to explore right here— we’ll have plenty to do, and this issue has inspired us to lean into and embrace a true staycation.
In addition to splashing in the pool and backyard cookouts, we’re planning a family bike trip (taking some tips from “Gearing Up for a Great Ride”), and a family hike at the Cincinnati Nature Center (we loved learning about all the new plans in store for Long Branch Farm & Trails), and definitely a kayak trip or two (River Dogs, here we come!). Most important, we’ll be spending quality time together and relaxing.
If you find yourself going from suitcase to suitcase a little too much in the coming months, remember there’s a lot to explore right outside your front door. Happy summer!

A Sundance all-season pergola is one of the best, most cost-effective ways to achieve the covered deck or patio you’ve been dreaming of. But don’t just take our word for it.
“We loved the design and engineering. Every component of this system is first class. They did a great job designing and installing our pergola. I’d recommend it 100%.” - Wayne
“The versatility of the louvers being able to open and close—that was an important aspect for us. We didn’t want to get an awning that blocked out the sun and nothing could get in. We wanted to have the flexibility where we can open the louvers and let some sun in or close when the rain comes.” - Cheryl

When you plant a garden, you’re envisioning the rewards of a season that, ecologically speaking, are right around the corner. When you plan and plant a forested wetland, you’re laying the groundwork for a result that likely will take 5 years to come into its own.
“You have to have patience,” says Cory Christopher, Director of Conservation at Cincinnati Nature Center. That reality, however, doesn’t at all dampen Cory’s enthusiasm when he talks about the 93-acre forested wetland taking shape at the Nature Center’s Long Branch Farm & Trails—their members-only, hidden-gem location in Goshen.
But first, exactly what is a forested wetland? And why is it beneficial to have one? “It’s a fancy word for swamp, which sounds negative to most people,” Cory says.
This new forested wetland will be a patchwork of dry and wet areas dominated by trees. At times, it will be saturated by seasonal rains and flooded by runoff from nearby streams. Throughout the year, dry areas will emerge as water slowly filters down, creating a nutrient-rich soil and trapping toxins. The ripple effect: cleaner groundwater beyond its boundaries. The tree canopy of shade and open areas of sunlight will encourage a wide range of plant and animal species.
The fact is, the land at Long Branch Farm will be restored to what it naturally was—which is where this story starts. In 2022, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) contacted the Nature Center’s Executive Director Jeff Corney. TNC wanted to create a forested wetland in this part of the state, and asked if the Nature Center had a likely spot among its 1800 acres at Rowe Woods and Long Branch Farm. Jeff turned to Cory, who thought there were some places at the farm that just might work. And he was right.
CONTINUED >
The land Cory had in mind was along both sides of Gaynor Road near its intersection with OH-28. “There were signs it was a wetland ... until a farmer in the past drained it to make crop fields,” Cory says. Once TNC studies confirmed his suspicion, work got underway last fall.
Nature Center staff and volunteers removed invasive plants like honeysuckle, some larger trees, weeds and turf grass. That paved the way for the third partner in this venture, Oxbow River & Stream Restoration, Inc., to bring in heavy equipment and begin reshaping the flat fields—digging pockets in the landscape that will hold water for different periods of time, adding embankments and other work to transform it.
We know cranes fly over the farm and look for places to sleep at night.” More than anything, Cory hopes that Prothonotary Warblers will call the wetland home. “I consider it one of the most beautiful birds in the world ... with its brilliant yellow head, it almost glows.”
Other likely residents will be otters, mink, spotted turtles, frogs, salamanders, and who knows what else.
“I’m a big believer in listening and observing the land. It will tell you what it wants to be.”
“Hopefully, by fall, we’ll start planting,” Cory explains. That will be an immense, ongoing job involving thousands of plants and hundreds of seeds. “Some plants will be ones people don’t commonly see in wild areas around here, like hibiscus.”
— Cory
As for the animals, Cory says the project is taking a “if you build it, they will come” approach. “Ducks, grebes, maybe even a sandhill crane.
“By next spring, we’ll start to see results,” Cory says. Eventually, there are plans to create a pulloff area on Gaynor, building a viewing platform and trail for public access.
For the next 10 years, TNC will manage the land, and Nature Center staff will work alongside them to learn how to care for and maintain it. After that, the Nature Center will take over.
There are also plans for a Community Day when people will be invited to come and help plant. “We don’t have a date yet, but I think it’s especially important we make our neighbors feel a part of this,” Cory adds. “In 20 or 30 years, they can drive by and say, ‘I planted that tree!’”

The brown-and-tan brick building that sits at the corner of Loveland-Madeira Road and West Loveland Ave has seen its share of changing with the times. First, it was a post office. Then, a video store—back before movies stopped living inside VHS and DVDs. Today, it’s home to the Quilter’s Studio of Loveland, affectionately known as QSL. The mail and movies that used to reside there have been replaced by prismatic new occupants—nearly 5,000 bolts of brightly colored fabrics, lined up in endless harlequin rows.
“So, these are our batiks,” says QSL’s business manager Shelby Breed-Preshaw, as she pulls out a bolt of intensely colored, tie-dye-looking fabric.
“Every part is different,” Shelby explains as she holds out the cloth. “And you can’t exactly recreate it. This is kind of our niche. We’re like 90 percent batiks, which is not at all common.”
In fact, to many, quilting itself isn’t all that common. It’s something our grandmothers or great-grandmothers did … a lost art tucked away in an attic or shelved in a linen closet.
Not so at QSL, where quilting has found a home that draws a steady stream of customers to buy fabric, take classes, or rent time on one of their oversized long arm machines in The Workshop. Shelby manages QSL, The Workshop, and The Retreat— essentially an Airbnb for quilters—with her mother, Karen Breed, who founded QSL in 2010.
So saying, the mother and daughter expect to see thousands (yes, thousands) of quilters pass through their doors as part of the annual All Ohio Shop Hop™ this August and September. Organized by Great Sewing Adventures™, Ohio’s own Shop Hop is part of 18 other “Hops” taking
place this summer into fall, from Arizona all the way up to New England.
Shop Hops are the equivalent of a concert tour for quilters, with the added chance of winning some serious prizes. To qualify for prize entries, quilters first need to pick up a copy of the All Ohio Shop Hop Magazine, which is available at any participating quilting store in the state. The magazine includes a shopping “passport” ... as people visit the different shops, they collect stamps to fill in their passport. The more stamps they collect, the more prizes they have a chance to win. Among the event-wide grand prizes are a bernette 38 computerized sewing machine and a Handi Quilter Moxie XL long arm machine, as well as several others thanks to a number of sponsors.
As part of the Shop Hop, QSL will be handing out a “fat quarter” of their famous purple batik fabric to every visitor. For the uninitiated, a fat quarter isn’t an extra-thick silver coin. It’s a specific cut of fabric—a quarter yard that’s about twice as wide as the typical quarter yard cut. They’ll also have snacks, and the special fabric that was made especially for this year’s Shop Hop. But that’s probably not the main reason why so many come out for this unique event.
CONTINUED >
Just like concert tours have Swifties, Phishheads and the Beyhive, the Shop Hop offers quilting fans the chance to come together and celebrate their community—which is no small thing. Currently, according to a recent survey, there are about 11 million quilters in the U.S., with quilting-related sales in the billions. When she started out, Karen didn’t realize how many were out there.
“When I opened the shop, there were those who viewed it as a dying art,” she says.
However, technology has revolutionized the way quilts are made, from being sewn completely by hand to incorporating rotary cutting for fabric shapes, plus long arm machines and quilting software for applying the quilt top, batting and backing.
Karen says she was drawn to quilting because it was a hobby that brought together both her love of creativity and precision.
“I love color,” she explains. “I think of the fabric in the shop as one big box of crayons. Each one will be just the right color and pattern for someone’s special project.”
Inside that tan-and-brown corner building, Karen and Shelby have put the hands of time to work ... creating a home where the past and present are stitched together to become the bright and vibrant quilting community that QSL is today.

Take the Stress Out of Planning Your Ultimate Dream Vacation
ARTICLE BY CARLY TAMBORSKI

When you’re planning the vacation of a lifetime, there’s no margin for hiccups. Not just your usual summer getaway, we’re talking big—traveling overseas, committing to a long voyage, taking an extended trip. Those require special forethought and several considerations.
“Vantage Financial can bridge dreams with reality by providing structure and accountability ... all while minimizing financial stress,” says Michael Franks, Senior Wealth Advisor, who shares some key insights on prepping for this kind of flagship journey.
Use a Financial Planner. A financial planner has the expertise for a bucket-list-style trip—they’ll work with your financial goals, assess financial health and risks, plus help build and monitor a savings and investment plan.
Create a Budget. Establish a detailed budget, automate savings, and leverage reward programs from airlines, hotels, credit cards and/or bank accounts.
Focus on Necessities. Prepare for core expenses like lodging, transportation and meals—but don’t forget added costs like visas, travel insurance, and pet/childcare arrangements. Automate bills at home during the trip, and keep an emergency fund for cancellations.
Create a Timeline. Plan and set a budget 18 months out, refining and locking in rates 12–18 months out. Finalize itinerary and confirm passports/visas at 6–12 months. Pay off deposits, confirm bookings, secure vaccinations, and build an emergency fund at 3–6 months. With 1–3 months to go, make final payments, and notify credit card companies of travel plans to avoid freezes. Then revel and relish in your once-in-a-lifetime trip!
Loveland local and Loveland proud — we’ve been making backyard dreams come true since 2002. Fireplaces and fire pits, in-ground pools, patios, driveways and more. We have the availability to install your project this season. Increase your curb appeal — we can replace your old blacktop or concrete driveway. If you’re looking to install your in-ground pool this season, we have a few spots left.
It all started with a woman and a dream. Karen Wellington believed that even in the thick of cancer treatment, life deserved to be lived with joy. Today, her legacy lives on through the Karen Wellington Foundation for LIVING with Breast Cancer, which brings “Gifts of Fun” to women living with breast cancer—one spa day, one concert ticket, one beach getaway at a time.
Karen, a longtime Cincy mom-soccer-coachsinger-painter-cake-designer, lived with breast cancer for 10 years—but she never let her disease define her. She dreamed of a world where women fighting breast cancer could get a break from the endless cycle of appointments and uncertainty. Instead of waiting until she was cancer-free, Karen believed in LIVING fully with cancer … and helping others do the same.
After her passing in 2007, her family made that dream a reality, sending one family living with breast cancer on vacation that first year. Today, the Cincinnati-based nonprofit has gifted more than 4,000 women and their families with moments of joy—from girls’ trips and sporting events to beach vacations and skydiving.

“We put fun back on the calendar,” says Emma Hooi, Marketing & Events Manager at KWF. “That could mean a relaxing trip to Florida or a girls’ weekend at Hocking Hills. It could also mean a zoo day, spa treatment, or even just a night out at a Reds game. It’s about helping women feel like themselves again—not just someone battling cancer.”
For Mandy Geyman, a 37-year-old Loveland native and our own former social media specialist for Loveland Lifestyle, those words took on deep, personal meaning. In January 2021, while 17 weeks pregnant with her second daughter, Mandy was diagnosed with stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), a rare and aggressive form of the disease. That same week, her oldest daughter, Lucy, just three years old, was diagnosed with autism.
“Things moved very fast once I was diagnosed,” Mandy shares. “Only one week after, I was sitting in the chemo center starting treatment as a pregnant woman … I ended up doing 13 rounds of chemotherapy. On top of cancer and baby appointments, we were on a new journey to find the best autism resources for Lucy. And COVID was still a big deal, so we had to stay physically isolated from most family and friends … our incredible support system surrounded us in so many creative ways—so we felt loved and not alone.”
Her husband, Matt, became the family’s anchor. “He managed my appointments, sometimes 10 a week, researched resources for Lucy, handled all our medical bills and insurance claims, and still worked full-time from a small desk in the playroom… he definitely had the harder job,” Mandy recalls.
Three weeks after her final chemo session, Mandy gave birth to a healthy daughter named Hope. Two weeks later, she underwent a mastectomy, which revealed a complete response to chemotherapy. After 30 rounds of radiation and multiple surgeries, she had no evidence of disease. From diagnosis to reconstruction, her journey spanned nearly two years.
Amidst this whirlwind, Matt and a family friend nominated Mandy for a KWF Gift of Fun: a week-long beach trip to Naples, Florida, in July 2022. A chance not only for a vacation, but permission to dream again. “Before that, I hadn’t let myself think about the future. I was cautious about making plans because the reality was, I was scared. I thought, ‘What if I’m not alive long enough to see the moment?’” Mandy recalls. “When KWF gifted me the trip, it was the first time since the cancer diagnosis that I had something planned for the future. It gave me a reason to look forward and to allow myself to be excited about it.”
CONTINUED >
That trip became a tradition. The Geymans now return to the same home each summer, forging a deep connection with the generous homeowners who donated the space. “We’ve never met in person, but we stay in regular contact with them—they feel like our own family. Our kids ask how many more days until we go back to ‘our Florida home,’” Mandy laughs.
Now with no evidence of disease, Mandy gives back by nominating others and sharing her journey on her Instagram account, @WarriorMamaMandy. “KWF provides something unique in acknowledging the importance of having fun and living life, despite the difficulties of a cancer diagnosis. They remind us that we’re more than just cancer patients. We’re people with dreams and goals—and they encourage you to embrace them.”
“We’re not just giving gifts,” Emma emphasizes. “We’re giving joy. We’re giving healing. And the reminder that life is still beautiful.” Helping remind these incredible families that joy and resilience can live alongside hardship. Which is why KWF thrives on community support ... through donations of time, resources, or simply nominating someone in need of a Gift of Fun.
Ready to get involved? This summer’s events benefiting the Karen Wellington Foundation include the 10th Annual Birdies, Beer & a Band Golf Outing (July 14) and the 4th Annual KWF FUN Run 5K & Recipient Celebration (August 16)—both with proceeds supporting future gifts. Because their tagline says it all: More living. More giving. Less cancer. KarenWellingtonFoundation.org
Want to get outside and ride the bike trail this summer? Great! We’re here with tips and tricks and things not to forget before you grab your gear and hit the pavement on two wheels. Let’s start with the basics. “The trail has posted rules, but think of it as normal walking etiquette,” says Matt Richardson, manager of Loveland’s Montgomery Cyclery. “If you’re a biker coming through Loveland, I tell people just slow down a little bit. Stay to the right, be patient, and remember this is a family-friendly trail.” If you’re cycling, make sure you call out “on your left” when you’re passing. If you’re a walker and a cyclist is coming up (usually faster than you), consider stepping off the trail to let them have the right-of-way.
Planning a day trip and wondering what you should bring? Matt’s first and foremost suggestion is a no-brainer. “Bring your helmet,” he says simply. Plus a water bottle in a cage, because you’re gonna get thirsty out there. Another thing to take is a blowout bag. “A lot of people like to put their keys and phones in there, but really what you need is a spare inner tube.”
Now that you’ve got the rules down and you’re ready to ride, I’m sure you’re wondering where you should go. Matt’s advice? “Go south. It’s a little less crowded, and you have more incremental stops.”
Need some day-trip inspo? Try the “Brewery Ride”— travel 19 miles between Cartridge Brewing and Fifty West, with delicious food and drink options at either end (and in between!). Or try the “Town-to-Town” ride from historic Loveland to historic Milford, a quick two-to-three hour trip and just around 12 miles. Explore both spots and check out a wealth of local shops and restaurants!
EXPLORE, DISCOVER & RELAX ON THE LITTLE MIAMI—NOW FROM SOUTH LEBANON
“Life is better when drifting down the Little Miami River,” says Mark Bersani of River Dogs Paddlesports. For more than two decades, his family has helped friends and families get away from it all in a canoe or kayak with Loveland Paddlesports—now, a new South Lebanon location allows them to serve both beginners and enthusiasts even better than ever.
“Our staff in Loveland is fantastic and well-experienced—so the timing was perfect,” Mark explains. “South Lebanon was an ideal location with great river access, abundant parking and a beautiful stretch of river.”
Mark’s family ran its original River Dogs outpost in Milford for a number of years before realizing that limited parking prevented it from becoming a viable business.
Then, when the Morgan’s Canoe family decided to sell their business earlier this year, Mark knew that a lot of people would soon be looking for a new place to paddle.
So did the city of South Lebanon.
“The city has truly made us feel welcome,” Mark smiles. “They’ve gone above and beyond to offer facilities and prepare the property for our operation. It’s been a blessing—we’re grateful for the wonderful partnership.”
Mark points to community as being vital for any region, and explains how giving back where his team operates has always been a priority.
“The river provides our family a place to do what we love—in return, we work hard to preserve and protect this incredible place, hosting numerous river cleanups each summer to remove trash and debris that don’t belong.”
Mark estimates that volunteers at those cleanups have removed more than 1,500 tires over the last 21 years.
River Dogs and Loveland Paddlesports also partner with The Adventure Crew, a Cincinnati-based nonprofit that encourages urban teens to experience the outdoors.
“Every spring and fall, we’ve hosted the Crew as they kayak the Little Miami or local lakes,” he says. “It’s incredible to see how the students love the outdoors and revel in the joys of simple play in a natural environment. The phones get put away, the smiles light up.”
Additionally, River Dogs plans to be involved in community events like South Lebanon’s 4th of July Celebration and their Christmas in the Village Horse Parade, as well as Paddlefest— where 2,000+ paddlers enjoy the Ohio River every August.
Aside from community support and a respect for shared natural surroundings, River Dogs Paddlesports is also all about top-notch gear. In fact, it will be the first and only outfitter in the area to offer the Crescent Primo as a rental kayak. “It has a super comfortable framed seat that will keep you dryer—plus adjustable foot pegs, paddle holders, water bottle holders and more,” Mark proudly shares.
Mark’s mantra? The river is for everyone.
“Kayaking and canoeing are fun activities to do with friends and families, as well as perfect outings for companies, school groups, sports teams or scouts,” he says. “The section of river we operate on is perfect for beginners and experienced paddlers both.”
But most of all, Mark maintains it’s a remarkable natural resource that should be appreciated.
“When you spend time on this river, you can’t help but feel relaxed and peaceful.”
