JOUR NE Y F OR A L IF E T IME BRIDGE STREET HEALTH REIMAGINES PRIMARY CARE, PERSONALIZING WELLNESS AT EVERY STEP
ARTICLE BY PAMELA MCWHORTER PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J. CAPPS

Just up the road from a short bridge that spans the Little Miami River, there’s a tall gabled house that’s home to a new way to practice primary care. Walking up the steps of Bridge Street Health, it’s easy to think you’re stopping by a neighbor’s house or maybe a family get-together. Chairs on the front porch create a comfortable space for conversation. Then as you walk inside, the warm and inviting lobby is filled with natural light — perfect for the plants and fresh flowers you’ll find there. You might even be offered a latte before
you sit down with Michael Hendrixson, D.O., or Melanie Jones, Pharm.D. It’s certainly not the harsh, fluorescent-lit and lightning-fast 15-minute visits that we’ve come to expect from traditional healthcare providers. It’s primary care, reimagined — where the art of listening and the science of medicine come together to provide care that’s focused on prevention, longevity, and optimal wellness. Opening in October 2025, Bridge Street Health was founded to bridge the gap between conventional primary care and functional medicine. Firmly grounded in science-based medicine, the practice provides deeply personalized care that seeks to uncover and address the root causes behind disease. “When I met with Dr. Hendrixson, we spent over an hour discussing the different things going on with my health,” says patient Eric. “It was the first visit I’d had with a doctor where I didn’t feel rushed.” For Dr. Hendrixson and Melanie, primary care means looking at the whole person, not just the symptoms. Their comprehensive approach has led to some patients experiencing dramatic turnarounds and achieving new levels of vitality. Carrie, another Bridge Street Health patient, can also attest to these positive changes firsthand. “I’ve never had a doctor take that much time with me,” she explains. “I also really appreciated the opportunity to work with Melanie, to talk through my nutritional needs and the supplements that could support the work Dr. Hendrixson is doing.” With Bridge Street Health, Carrie says she’s lost 11 pounds, her bloodwork has improved, she sleeps better, and she has more energy.
“I just feel healthier, overall,” Carrie happily reports. For patients like Eric and Carrie, seeking the kind of personalized care that takes the time to listen to health issues and goals has been a journey. Likewise, establishing a practice that connects modern medicine with compassionate, holistic care has been a journey for both Dr. Hendrixson and Melanie.
“FORE”-SHADOWING A CAREER IN MEDICINE
Growing up, Hendrixson had always been fascinated by medicine. However, it wasn’t until he was the assistant golf pro at a country club in Lexington that he seriously thought about pursuing it. “I knew a number of physicians who were members there,” Dr. Hendrixson recalls. “I just kind of connected, and I thought ‘maybe I can be one of them.’” A few years later, he graduated from the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University. Training for doctors of osteopathy takes a more holistic and preventive approach to medicine, looking at the whole person, including mind, body, and emotions. For most of his career, Dr. Hendrixson worked within TriHealth Cincinnati, until about a dozen CONTINUED >

years ago when he decided to take a swing at golf again and embarked on a journey to qualify for the Champions Tour. After a year, Hendrixson realized he wasn’t done practicing medicine, and went back to work at UC Health’s West Chester campus before joining Melanie at Bridge Street Health.
A CASE OF DIVINE INTERVENTION
Meanwhile, Melanie was traveling down her own health career path. With a degree in biology and Spanish, and a doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Cincinnati, she spent many years working in the health industry. There, she developed innovative programs that helped Medicare patients manage their health with fewer or lower-cost medications. While she saw success, she felt it was marginal. Meanwhile, her passion and belief that food is medicine was growing, especially after her father developed a chronic disease. “It was leading him to lots of specialists, lots of healthcare providers, but he just continued to get worse, until he couldn’t leave the house anymore,” Melanie recalls. To help her father, Melanie became certified in functional medicine, which addresses the root causes of disease by taking a person’s entire “ecosystem” into consideration, including genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Functional medicine has four pillars: optimizing nutrition, exercise, sleep, and managing stress. In October 2023, Melanie took the leap and started her own functional medicine practice. While she helped many patients transform their health, she wanted to provide more comprehensive care by partnering with like-minded healthcare providers. With this goal in mind, together with her husband and business partner, Bruce, they bought the friendly-looking house on Bridge Street. While searching for the right partners, Melanie and Bruce found themselves at their church’s prayer team with Dr. Hendrixson’s wife, Rebecca. While talking together about health and wellness, Rebecca shared that she was married to a physician who was passionate about these same things. Several deep conversations later, Bridge Street Health was born.

HEALTH — THE JOURNEY FOR A LIFETIME
Our healthcare journey is not a straight line. It can have twists and turns, and sometimes surprises. Similarly, Dr. Hendrixson and Melanie have followed their own unique paths that led them to establishing Bridge Street Health. “It’s all the things that you would expect from primary care, but taking that very holistic approach,” explains Melanie. “We think this is the way medicine should be practiced,” adds Dr. Hendrixson, which is why they offer a free, no-obligation consultation for patients interested in learning more. At Bridge Street Health, empowering each patient to achieve better health is more than a prescription or 15-minute visit — it’s a deeply personal journey of a lifetime, and Dr. Hendrixson and Melanie are there to help patients achieve long-term health and vitality at every step. Immunity-boosting Soup INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •
1 tbsp. olive oil ¾ cup carrots, chopped ¾ cup onion, chopped ¾ cup celery, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 4 cups chicken broth or bone broth 3" fresh ginger root, peeled 3" fresh turmeric root, peeled 2/3 cup quick pearled barley 10-12 oz of boneless chicken breasts Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, heat oil over medium heat. Add carrots, onion, and celery and sauté until softened, stirring frequently, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Add ½ cup of the broth. Using a box grater or microplane, grate ginger and turmeric roots into vegetable mix. Allow to cook for 1-2 minutes, then add remaining broth. Bring to a boil. When boiling, stir in barley, then add the chicken, ensuring all chicken is fully submerged in broth. Cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 10-12 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through (165°F). Remove chicken and allow to cool slightly on a cutting board, then shred or tear into bite-size pieces. Return chicken to pot, season with salt and pepper to taste.

IT’S ALL IN THE INGREDIENTS
“This soup is rich in phytonutrients, fiber and protein,” shares Melanie, explaining the particular benefits of each ingredient. “Onions and garlic are antioxidants, and they’re anti-inflammatory. Onions have quercetin, a chemical important in immune response. And when garlic is chopped or crushed, it releases allicin, a compound with antimicrobial and immune boosting properties. Onions and garlic also have vitamin C, magnesium, and zinc, which the immune system needs to function optimally.” “Ginger and turmeric boost the body’s immune response by neutralizing free radicals, reducing inflammation and supporting digestion. And barley is a great source of soluble fiber that stimulates certain types of immune cells known to fight infections.” “It’s a great example of food as medicine!” shares Melanie.

Follow the Trail (and the Crowd) to Barbecue Brilliance
ARTICLE BY NICOLE BROWNING PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

H OT SP OT | FO O D + BEVERAGE
Sound the alarms, Loveland! There’s a new barbecue joint in town, and this is one you definitely don’t want to miss. Pig Candy has moved into (and totally renovated) the former Branch Hill United Methodist Church on Bridge Street … they are fired up and already serving our community well (until sell-out, that is, which does happen, so get there early!). As soon as you enter Pig Candy, it’s impossible not to notice the attention to detail, the love and the care that went into opening their second location. The renovations are gorgeous, with sleek hardwood, modern finishings, and reminiscent stained glass that harkens back to the building’s history as a church that housed a congregation up until a year before it went up for sale. But what appealed to owners Paul Montgomery and Christina Goehrig about Loveland? And why an old church? “We looked at a lot of neighborhoods, but we really wanted to be somewhere that we could be a part of the community,” Christina explains. “Loveland has always been one of my favorite areas around Cincinnati … I love the bike trail, I love the vibe. And when we saw that the church had come up for sale, we jumped all over it.” And not only did they buy the church property that houses their restaurant, they also bought a home that’s a remodel project in and of itself about five minutes down the road. “For both of our locations, we own our properties, so we are all in. That’s equally an investment in the community, and now we own personal residences in both communities,” Christina says. Of course, the building is gorgeous, with ample indoor and outdoor seating, and plenty of parking to be found, but the food? Put simply, it’s out of this world. Smoked in-house daily, each one of Pig Candy’s proteins leave you feeling satiated and satisfied with their smoky flavor and no-nonsense seasoning. Christina tells us that “when it comes to adding flavor, we really believe in a minimalist approach. We mostly use salt and pepper, or brines if it’s poultry. We take the time to do the brining process … some places will skip that step, and you don’t get as flavorful turkey or chicken.”
“Then there are some steps we take in terms of the timing, like when we pull the meat,” she continues. “And some of those things can add even more time to the process … but it makes for a more flavorful, fresh, juicy product.” The dedication and care that go into every meat are blatantly evident from the first bite. Tender, juicy, bursting with flavor. The pulled pork, brisket and turkey options are all phenomenal. But the barbecue isn’t the only star of the show. All of Pig Candy’s sides are unique and just as irresistible (addictive!) as their protein showstoppers. From honeyed cornbread and southern-style green beans to creamy mac ’n’ cheese and crunchy slaw, they’ve forgotten nothing, crafting a menu that is uniquely their own while staying true to bold barbecue flavors. Take note, there’s a hidden gem on the menu. The one dish that should not be missed: The Pig Candy Waffles. Yep, we said waffles. Fluffy, crispy, gluten-free waffle batter is cleverly pressed with their signature pulled pork, then served with a housemade peach maple glaze and a white BBQ sauce

The staff is attentive and constantly checking in to answer questions, clear plates, and make sure you’re having the best experience. Those working the counter are informative and attentive, helping you through your order as needed. “The reason we could do this second location is because we have such an amazing team at our first location,” Christina gushes. “We’ve had people really step up in the last month to help, and have amazing leadership at

So whether you’re craving ’cue or want to check out the church’s amazing transformation, Pig Candy is definitely worth trying (don’t forget Sunday brunch — a Loveland exclusive!). It’s Working Out LOCAL TRAINER MAKES IT EASY TO ACHIEVE RESULTS, NO MATTER THE SCHEDULE ARTICLE BY BILL FURBEE PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J. CAPPS
For many, a new year means new goals and objectives, habits. Steve Ball, owner and trainer at BEAT Personal Training Blue Ash is aiming to help many in Greater Cincinnati do just that.
WHY IS RIGHT NOW A GREAT TIME TO THINK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL FITNESS AND TRAINING?
The first months of a new year are a powerful time to prioritize fitness because they set the tone for the rest of the year. Many people approach January with fresh motivation and clear resolutions, but without a structured plan, that energy often fades quickly. Establishing consistent fitness habits early helps transform short-term enthusiasm into long-term lifestyle change.

“BEAT IS JUST AS MUCH FOR MOMS AND DADS WORKING TOWARD PERSONAL GOALS AS IT IS FOR HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE, AND PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES CHASING CHAMPIONSHIPS.” AND FITNESS IS SO IMPORTANT OVERALL ... WHY?
Fitness isn’t just about looking good — it’s about living better. Regular exercise strengthens your heart, muscles, and bones, while lowering the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. It also sharpens your mind, boosts energy, and improves sleep, making everyday life more productive and enjoyable.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN THE WORLD OF PERSONAL TRAINING? WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO BEAT?
Fitness has always been more than just a career path for me — it’s been a calling. I’ve seen firsthand how training can transform lives, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. What drew me to BEAT Personal Training was the chance to take that passion and build something bigger: a place where every person, regardless of background or starting point, could access professional-level coaching.
HOW MIGHT BEAT BE IDEAL FOR PARENTS WANTING TO GET BACK INTO A FITNESS ROUTINE, AFTER KIDS HAVE GONE BACK TO SCHOOL?
BEAT is just as much for moms and dads working toward personal goals as it is for high school, college, and professional athletes chasing championships. Whether you’re balancing both a family and a career while trying to stay strong and energized, or preparing for the demands of competitive sports, our experienced staff delivers training that meets you where you are … and then pushes you toward your best.
AND YOUR TEAM DOES THAT HOW?
We combine advanced equipment, evidence-based programming, and a supportive community to ensure every client feels empowered and capable. Parents find a place where fitness fits into their busy lives, while athletes discover an environment that sharpens their edge. At BEAT, everyone trains with purpose, everyone belongs, and everyone benefits from the same professional-level approach.

PRO TIPS FROM STEVE
NUTRITION The biggest key to staying on track with diet and nutrition is planning, planning, planning. I map out a week’s worth of meals, and ensure I have everything I need to execute that plan. CONSISTENCY We won’t always be 100% motivated to hit the gym, but just showing up is the first step. SOUNDTRACK I listen to a lot of self-improvement and fitness podcasts. ATTITUDE My attitude toward physical fitness is rooted in discipline, balance, and purpose. I see training not just as a way to build strength or endurance, but as a foundation for living with energy, confidence, and resilience.
TELL US WHY A FITNESS ROUTINE IS MORE THAN JUST STRENGTH AND CARDIO?
Exercise is proven to reduce stress by lowering cortisol levels and releasing endorphins, the “feel-good” chemicals that naturally boost mood. It helps ease symptoms of anxiety and depression, sharpens focus, and improves sleep quality — all of which are essential for thriving in today’s busy world. Just as importantly, with a regular routine in place, achieving fitness milestones builds confidence and resilience, reminding you that you’re capable of more than you think.
WHAT ARE YOUR CLIENTS LIKE?
We work with moms and dads who want to stay strong, energized, and healthy while balancing home and work life. We also serve athletes at every stage of their journey — from high school competitors preparing for the next level to college athletes sharpening their performance to professionals maintaining peak condition. We’ve worked with world-class UFC fighters, pro athletes, state champions, and NCAA All-Americans.
WHY IS THE LOVELAND COMMUNITY SUCH A SPECIAL ONE TO YOU?
Loveland is known for its welcoming spirit, family-centered values, and strong sense of connection, all of which align perfectly with our mission of “professional-level training for every person.” BeatPersonalTraining.com | 7851 Palace Dr, Cincinnati 513.621.2328

This Special Nonprofit Connects Special-Needs Families with Fun — and Each Other
AN AWESOME PLAYING FIELD ARTICLE BY KATHY DOANE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED Augie’s Adventures keeps special-needs kids in the game, both figuratively and literally. The importance, the challenges of doing this? Founder Heidi Terselic shares her reasons, her commitment, her hopes, dreams, and plans for parents and kids (of any age) with disabilities.
WHO IS AUGIE?
Augustus “Augie” Michael Terselic is my 19-year-old son. He has Down syndrome. Throughout his life, my husband, Mike, and I have done everything possible to keep him connected with friends and activities in the same way that his three older sisters, Vivien, Ella, and Millie, have been.
AND THERE WERE CHALLENGES ...
We lived in two different states and in Canada before moving to Loveland when Augie was in the fourth grade. He always had a personal aide assigned to him at those previous schools, and while that gave him lots of academic support, there was little interaction with his peers.
WAS THAT THE INSPIRATION FOR THE LAUNCH OF AUGIE’S ADVENTURES IN 2021?
Yes, partially, but before that, things had already changed for the better when we moved to Loveland 10 years ago.
34
G IV IN G BAC K | L I FE + C ULT U RE
WHAT WAS DIFFERENT?
We found a total environment of inclusion in his elementary school. From an early age, kids were taught that having someone like Augie, a person with Down syndrome or others with special needs, sitting next to you is perfectly normal. Whether in the classroom or choir or PE, there was no adult buffer encouraging kids to interact with their special-needs peers. So they learned to take ownership of these interactions through a school program where they become ambassadors for those with special needs. It’s wonderful.
AND THE VALUE AUGIE’S ADVENTURES BRINGS TO THIS KIND OF ALREADY-INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY?
I wanted more. I wanted to offer special-needs families a place where they could come relax and have fun. And I mean the entire family … parents, special-needs kids of all kinds, their siblings, everyone.
WHAT KIND OF ACTIVITIES DO YOU HAVE?
We have 19 acres offering wooded trails, a giant hillside campsite, and an open field for volleyball, Wiffle ball, actually, for any kind of games. We also have a basketball court and an outdoor swimming pool. We post events on our website, and often just a $25 donation holds a spot for your entire family to come enjoy any of the activities we offer on our personal property.
Mike Terselic, Millie Terselic, Vivien Wolf beside her husband, Mark Wolf, Augie Terselic, Ella Terselic, and Heidi Terselic
INCLUDING EVENTS DURING THE WINTER?
Yes! One of the reasons we bought this property was that it had a heated outbuilding which houses our pickleball court and cornhole boards. It’s a flexible space for all kinds of activities throughout the year. There’s even a parents’ lounge area with comfy furniture!
AND ARE MOM AND DAD STILL IN CHARGE OF THEIR KIDS WHILE THEY’RE THERE?
Not entirely. Teen and adult volunteers supervise all special-needs kids as well as their siblings. Parents can put their feet up, truly relax, visit with each other, and not worry about shadowing their kids.
BECAUSE IT’S IMPORTANT FOR PARENTS OF SPECIAL-NEEDS CHILDREN TO MEET OTHER SPECIAL-NEEDS PARENTS …
Regardless of their kid’s specific diagnosis or lack of diagnosis, many of the things these parents struggle with or need help with are the same.
THAT’S PART OF YOUR MISSION, TOO, RIGHT? TO HELP FAMILIES NAVIGATE THEIR COMPLICATED REALITY. HOW?
Through our Augie’s Adventures Parent Support Group. We meet at 6:30 p.m. every third Thursday of the month, October through May (minus December) at St. Columban Parish. The meetings are always free, and we provide supervised childcare for special-needs kids and their siblings.
WHAT GOES ON AT THESE MEETINGS?
I book expert guest speakers across a number of topics. A common subject is anything to do with financial planning, like setting up a trust for your special-needs child. Or, someone from the Social Security Administration explains how that works for kids with special needs. Recently, Officer Vicki Johnson, St. Columban School’s Resource Officer, talked about keeping children safe online, a topic that benefits all kids in a family. Our website always has current information on meeting topics.
SO, WHAT’S AHEAD FOR AUGIE’S ADVENTURES?
We want to continue to expand our offerings and draw more special-needs young adults, like Augie. Mike and I have talked about sponsoring group activities that would appeal to that age group, like a Reds game or trampoline park outing.
IS IT A CHALLENGE GETTING THE WORD OUT TO THAT AGE GROUP?
Yes, and getting the word out in general. Right now, I’m a one-woman show, doing all the PR, programming, everything. What I’m looking for is someone who has the time and desire to create a consistent social media presence for us, posting content across all our channels.
WHAT DOES AUGIE THINK ABOUT BEING THE INSPIRATION FOR SUCH AN AMAZING PLACE?
He’s always been very social. He loves it. There are times during an event when he’s like the kid who takes over ownership of his own birthday party. He loves distributing our monthly meeting flyers, too. Augie is definitely the best PR we have. Finding Balance How Ref lection, Self-Compassion & Therapy Support Mental Well-Being & Renewal A fresh new year offers many the opportunity to reset after the holiday season’s rush. While some take this time to slow down and reflect, the pressure to set resolutions or chase a “new me” is everywhere, filling our feeds and conversations with messages about improvement and change. “So many people feel pressured to start the year doing things differently from the past year,” shares Jaime Bishop, LPCC-S. “They set goals or resolutions that are often unrealistic and unattainable, setting themselves up to fail. This affects their emotional well-being … feeling like they don’t have enough discipline to succeed and make the changes they feel are healthier for them.” Jaime, an outpatient telehealth therapist at the Lindner Center of Hope, has more than 30 years of experience in the mental health field. She has observed that self-compassion and realistic intentions create the foundation for lasting growth. “Instead of harsh goals that may set you up to fail, focus on gratitude and small, sustainable actions,” she says. “For example, instead of saying, ‘I want to feel happier,’ try ‘I will spend 15 minutes a day outside,’ or ‘I will practice gratitude three times a week.’” Jaime encourages people to start the year with reflection, rather than reinvention.

“The new year is a good time to assess your emotional landscape,” she continues. “What caused you stress in the last year? What brought you peace? What activities, routines, or habits supported your well-being … and which ones drained it?” She recommends starting by setting boundaries with social media. Taking time to unplug. Creating online spaces that inspire, rather than compare. “Our body and mind are deeply linked,” Jaime explains. “Practice consistent sleep habits, limit screen time, and make time for movement that feels good, like yoga or hiking.” During the winter months, when days are still short, Jaime notes that it’s common to feel a dip in motivation or mood. “Get outside, explore, and experience winter outdoor activities such as snow hikes, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing,” Jaime encourages. “Take advantage of the sun when you can by taking a walk or visiting a local botanical garden.”
Jaime Bishop, LPCC-S
Taking an inventory of stressors can also help reveal where therapy can provide additional support. Therapy offers a safe space to process patterns, gain awareness, and learn practical tools to navigate life’s challenges. “It provides an opportunity to self-examine and explore,” Jaime notes. “You may learn new techniques to manage stress, improve communication, and strengthen self-compassion.” At the Lindner Center of Hope, Jaime and her colleagues take a collaborative approach to care. The Center offers inpatient and outpatient programs, group therapy, psychological testing, and a range of evidence-based treatments tailored to each individual. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach,” explains Jaime. “Our team works together to create a plan that fits each person’s unique needs.” She notes that the work holds deep meaning for every provider involved. “We’re passionate about the work that we do,” enthuses Jaime. “It’s a privilege to support you in healing and recovery.” Her message for the new year is one of patience, perspective, and grace. “Be gentle with yourself,” Jaime says. “You’re doing the best you can. Growth and healing take time, and progress matters more than perfection.” For anyone facing a difficult season, she offers this heartfelt reminder, one that exemplifies the compassion she brings to her work: “You got this! Up to this point, you are 100% effective at getting through difficult days. Come as you are … we’ll meet you there.” LindnerCenterofHope.org | 4075 Old Western Row Rd, Mason 513.536.4673
