The Power of Intentional Giving

As the year winds down and the holidays begin to shimmer into view, I’m reminded that giving isn’t simply an act — it’s an expression of who we are. True generosity is heart-led. It comes from a place of intention, integrity, and genuine care. When we give with a full heart, we aren’t just offering something  to others — we’re offering something  of ourselves. And that is where the real magic happens.

Leading with heart means showing up honestly, choosing compassion before convenience, and giving in ways that reflect our values. It’s thoughtful, grounded, and deeply human. Heart-led integrity shapes every gesture, big or small, and invites us to give in ways that ripple outward — strengthening relationships, nurturing community, and reminding us that kindness is its own powerful form of connection.

This month, we’re honored to feature a local nonprofit that helps families grow through adoption — a beautiful example of love and support in action. We also spotlight Sweet Heart Winery, a local gem known not only for its wines but for its commitment to giving back. And because caring for ourselves helps us care more deeply for others, we’re sharing soothing yoga poses designed to bring peace to even the busiest weeks. To round it out, we’re offering a batch of festive cookies perfect for gifting, sharing, or savoring around the table.

As you move through this season of giving, I hope you feel inspired to give in ways that align with your heart — with sincerity, with generosity, and with the spirit that makes this community so special.

Here’s to giving well, giving meaningfully, and giving from the heart.

SWEET HEART WINERY: WHERE GIVING IS POURED FROM THE HEART

ARTICLE BY ADRIANA KARAGOZIAN

There is something quietly transcendent about a place built not only on craft, but on care — where each glass holds a story, and every pour reflects the pulse of a family who believes that generosity is as essential as the wine itself.

At Sweet Heart Winery, nestled along the banks of the Big Thompson River, giving is not a gesture reserved for the holidays. It is their way of life — a daily devotion to community, compassion, and connection.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY E.T.C. PHOTOGRAPHY, WORLD WONDERS LLC

As Megan Nickelson, marketing coordinator and daughter of co-owners Charles and Farah Oster, puts it simply, “Because as a family, we love people, and we love to help people.”

That simple truth has become the beating heart of Sweet Heart Winery: a place where family values blossom into community action, and where wine is only the beginning of a greater mission. Their philosophy outstretches the boundaries of the vineyard and reaches into the soul of Northern Colorado, touching countless lives through causes both great and small.

Megan explains that their purpose extends far beyond the tasting room. “It’s creating

experiences for people to connect in ways that connect them to the community.”

Those experiences — sometimes shared over a glass of red by the river, sometimes through a fundraiser that changes a child’s life — are what define the spirit of Sweet Heart Winery.

Over the past year alone, Sweet Heart has partnered with an astounding array of local organizations. “There's probably over 100 organizations that we had a touch in over the year.” From veterans’ causes to children’s hospitals and women’s support programs, the winery’s generosity has become a steady current flowing through Northern Colorado.

“AS A FAMILY, WE BELIEVE IN CONNECTION, AND ONE WAY WE DO THIS AT SWEET HEART IS TO HELP CONNECT PEOPLE TO CAUSES.”

“Combat Recovery Foundation is an organization out of Northern Colorado that helps veterans that need support,” Megan shares, “and we give back through partnering with one of our ciders. We created a cider brand that's called Patriot Press.”

Each sip from those bottles carries a story of courage, healing, and remembrance. And for Sweet Heart, it’s not just about pouring cider. It’s about pouring hope.

Another cherished partnership blooms each February, when the winery’s signature Valentine’s wines take on a deeper purpose. “We give back to the Heart Institute at Children's Hospital Colorado,

and a portion of all of our Valentine's wines goes to the heart institute.”

Through these heartfelt collaborations, Sweet Heart Winery turns every season into a season of giving. They open their doors, their tables, and their hearts — supporting those who need a little extra kindness in their lives.

“We also give back to A Friend for You regularly, which provides pregnancy support to women in need, and we support them in a variety of ways, whether it's donating wine or donating space. We love meeting the women who are impacted, who are helped through the organization, understanding that everyone is going

through something, and everyone just needs a little kindness in their life.”

And the reach of their compassion doesn’t stop there. “Life for the Innocent is another organization that helps children who come from terrible situations that need help, whether that's food or education. Last year, we donated wine to their gala.”

Even art and music find a home within their giving spirit. “The symphony is coming out December 15th and 16th to Sweet Heart Winery. Their mission is to bring music and education to Northern Colorado.”

In this season of giving, Sweet Heart Winery reminds us that generosity is not measured by the size of a donation, but by the love that inspires it. And as they expand their story with Tesoro by Sweet Heart Wine in Old Town Fort Collins — a new treasure offering wine, cider, and warmth in equal measure — that same heart continues to guide them.

Because at Sweet Heart Winery, giving is not a campaign. It’s a calling.

A family’s love made liquid, poured freely into the hands of their community — one glass, one act of kindness, one connection at a time.

PROJECT ABBA HELPS FAMILIES SEEKING TO Adopt and Foster Kids

FULFILLING A MISSION TO PLACE CHILDREN IN LOVING HOMES

ARTICLE BY SHEN WU TAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA JEAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Just as they were about to submit their adoption application, Johnstown couple Devin and Adrienne Allison discovered their third child, Rowan, was on the way.

Despite this news, the couple still felt called to adopt a child. They had previously experienced miscarriages and complications with the births of their two biological children, Riker and Annie, before deciding to adopt.

On Feb. 10, 2023, Devin and Adrienne picked up their adopted daughter, Josie, from a hospital in Dallas, Texas, when she was only a day old and brought her home.

“We didn’t choose Josie; God chose her for us,” Devin says. “She  is amazing. She’s a little fireball and full of personality. Our whole family adores her. She’s the perfect addition to our family.”

During their adoption process, the Allisons encountered several obstacles, particularly related to the high financial cost and lack of structured support and mentorship. Their adoption cost more than $60,000, a barrier that forces many qualified, loving families to walk away from adoption entirely.

Out of the experience of the challenges they faced, the couple established Project ABBA, a ministry through Good Shepherd Church in Loveland designed to help families overcome the financial and structural barriers of adoption and foster care.

“When we were going through the process of adoption here in Colorado, we encountered a lot of barriers,” Devin comments. “We want to place kids in loving homes. The heart of Project ABBA is to walk alongside families to ensure cost, confusion, or lack of support never stands in the way of a child finding a loving home.”

Project ABBA officially launched in May 2025. Devin and Adrienne serve on the Project ABBA board alongside Austin Dyekman, the church’s lead pastor, and his wife, Katie, who have a passion for adoption and have fostered three boys themselves.

Since June, Project ABBA has raised around $100,000 and is currently supporting six families at various stages of the adoption process, including some who are undergoing home studies. A few individuals also have pledged to give a certain amount of financial assistance for later needs. The ministry provides financial grants, mentorship from experienced adoptive families, and practical support post-placement, such as meals, diapers, and care during transition periods.

so we can continue to support even more adoptions in the future”.

To raise funds for Project ABBA, an inaugural golf tournament was held at the Raindance National Golf Course in Windsor, Colo. in September. Also, Devin and the other Project ABBA board members are in the early stages of planning an annual gala.

While the focus is primarily assisting northern Colorado families with adoptions, the long-term goal for Project ABBA is to expand to helping families on multi-state and international levels. Devin also plans to partner with other churches in the future, further growing the Project ABBA community and impact.

“Adoption is a wonderful gift, not only for the child but also for the family."

“Adoption is a wonderful gift, not only for the child but also for the family,” Devin remarks. “It will change your mindset. Adoption challenges you as a family and as a parent, but it’s also extremely rewarding and increases your capacity to love.”

The name of the Allisons’ adopted daughter, Josie, derives from Josephine, the female version of the name Joseph. Joseph translates to “God will increase.”

Adoptions can cost up to $70,000, depending on the situation and agency. Project ABBA aims to remove that weight.

“Our goal is to make sure families don’t have to walk this road alone,” Devin says, noting many people drop out of the adoption process due to the costs. “Short-, medium- and long-term goals are to raise funds for families and to grow Project ABBA,

“Obviously, we are adding Josie to our family, so that plays into it,” Devin continues. “But now with Project ABBA, we believe it has an additional meaning that God will continue to increase families and expand this mission through Project ABBA.”

TIRAMISU COOKIES WITH WHIPPED MASCARPONE FROSTING

Warm Winter Indulgence

INGREDIENTS

For the cookies:

• 14 and 1/2 tbsp salted butter

• 1/2 cup + 1 tbsp cocoa powder

• 1 and 1/2 tsp DeLallo Instant Espresso Powder, can add up to 2 tsp if you want a stronger espresso flavor

• 3/4 cup brown sugar (light or dark) packed

• 3/4 cup granulated or cane sugar

• 2 large eggs, at room temperature

• 1 and 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

• 2 and 2/3 cups all-purpose flour, spooned & leveled

• 1 tsp baking powder

• 1 tsp baking soda

• 1/2 tsp salt

For the whipped mascarpone frosting:

• 8 ounces mascarpone

• 1 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar

• 1 tsp DeLallo Instant Espresso Powder

• 1 tbsp vanilla extract

• a pinch of salt

• 1 cup heavy cream, cold

DIRECTIONS

1. Melt the butter in a large mixing bowl. Whisk in cocoa powder and espresso powder, then sugars. Add eggs and vanilla, and whisk until smooth and combined, about 30-45 seconds. Stir in the dry ingredients, making sure to get any dry bits hiding in the bottom of the bowl.

2. Scoop the dough into balls that are 65 grams in size. Chill the dough balls in the fridge for at least 2 hours.

3. Pre-heat your oven to 365°F. (You can do 350°F if your oven doesn't allow custom temps.) Line a few cookie sheets with parchment paper. Place 5-6 cookies on each cookie sheet. Bake 1-2 sheets at a time, keeping the extra in the fridge. Bake cookies for 8-10 minutes. The edges will appear just set, and the tops will be a bit puffy. Once baked, immediately place a round cutter around the outside of each cookie and swirl the cookie within it to "scoot" them into perfect circles. This also helps them appear thicker. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet on a wire rack, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely while you make the frosting.

4. Mascarpone Frosting: In a medium bowl, beat together the mascarpone, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, espresso powder, and salt until smooth. Pour in the cold heavy cream and beat on low just until combined, then mix on high speed for about 1 minute, until the mixture is thick and smooth.

5. Pipe the frosting in swirls using a piping bag with the tip snipped off, or use a small cookie scoop to dollop the frosting onto the cooled cookies.

TAKE STRESS OFF YOUR HOLIDAY LIST WITH THESE MINDFUL PRACTICES

With the holiday season in full swing, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and exhausted. Though our bodies crave rest and slower rhythms during winter, our calendars often demand the opposite—leaving us drained by January.

The good news: you already have what you need to reset your stress response—your body, breath, and boundaries. It’s okay to say no or set time limits to protect your peace and your family’s.

On the following pages, the teachers at Resilient Soul Yoga share some of their favorite practices for finding calm amid the holiday rush.

SUPPORTED FISH POSE

THREE PART BREATH

Three-Part Breath, also known as Durga Breath, is a calming pranayama that teaches full, mindful breathing. By inhaling through the nose to fill the low belly, ribs, and chest, then releasing slowly through the nose, this practice grounds the mind and soothes the nervous system. It’s a simple yet powerful way to return to presence, balance, and ease—anytime, anywhere.

Supported Fish Pose gently opens the chest, heart, and throat while lengthening the front body. Resting over props allows deep relaxation and easier breathing, countering the effects of slouching and screen time. This restorative pose calms the nervous system, improves posture, and invites a sense of spaciousness, openness, and ease throughout the body and mind.

SEATED FORWARD FOLD

Sit tall with legs crossed or extended in front of you. Inhale to lengthen your spine, then exhale as you hinge from the hips, folding forward. Let your hands rest on your shins, feet, or the floor. Breathe deeply, softening through the back body. Calms the mind, stretches the back, and releases tension.

02 03 04

Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose is a deeply restorative posture that soothes the body and mind. Lie on your back with legs extended up a wall or resting on a chair. Relax your arms at your sides, palms up, and breathe slowly through your nose for several minutes. This gentle inversion reduces anxiety, supports circulation, and invites calm and renewal.

“May you be happy. May you be well. May you be safe. May you be at peace.”

To help keep the season sacred, Practice the Loving Kindness Meditation -- a form of the Buddhist Metta meditation

Start by holding a vision of yourself in your mind’s eye, and repeat:

May you be happy.

May you be well.

May you be safe.

May you be at peace.

Then hold a vision of a loved one, then an acquaintance, then someone with whom you have difficulty, then the whole world. It is a great practice to start or end your day.

Take it to the streets. Try it when you are stuck in traffic, waiting in line at a store, with a relative you find challenging, etc.
