The Lessons We Forget There’s something about watching a child with an animal that stops you in your tracks. It doesn’t matter if it’s a dog racing through the backyard, a cat curled up in quiet companionship, or a horse gently teaching patience and trust. There’s a connection there that feels untouched by the noise of the world. It’s simple. It’s honest. It just is. Kids don’t overthink it. They don’t question whether they’re doing it right. They reach, they laugh, they sit quietly, they try again. And animals meet them there, without judgment or expectation, offering nothing but presence. And somewhere along the way, as adults, we forget how to do that. We start to measure things. We guard ourselves. We move faster, think louder, and lose sight of the beauty in what’s right in front of us. But kids and animals live differently. They remind us what it looks like to trust without fear, to love without conditions, and to find joy in the smallest, most ordinary moments. A muddy paw. A gentle nudge. A quiet afternoon side by side. They teach us to slow down. To be present. To see the world again not as something to manage, but as something to experience. And in many ways, they also mark the moments that shape us. The first pet a child calls their own. The responsibility of caring for something beyond themselves. The confidence built in small, steady steps. The quiet lessons in patience, empathy, and resilience that stay long after childhood has passed. These are milestones, too. In this issue, as we honor local rescues and humans making impact, we’re also celebrating growth. The kind that happens in everyday moments and the kind that leads to something even bigger. You’ll meet young individuals in our community stepping into their next chapter as scholarship recipients, students who have worked hard, shown up, and are moving forward with purpose. And when you look closely, you can often trace those qualities back to the same place: learning to care, to commit, to stay curious, and to see the world with fresh eyes. Because sometimes, the greatest lessons in life don’t come from big stages or defining moments. They begin in the quiet, on the floor beside a sleepy dog, in the barn with a trusted horse, or in the simple, unspoken friendship between a child and an animal. This issue is a reminder to hold onto that. To come back to it. And to recognize that no matter how much we grow, there’s always something to learn from the way they see the world. Hailey James Berthoud High School Attending Colorado State University Hailey James leads with both heart and intention. A lifelong Colorado resident, she was raised alongside her two older brothers and younger sister in a close-knit family that shaped her deep appreciation for connection, resilience, and community. Known by those around her as driven, compassionate, and quick-witted, Hailey brings both warmth and determination to everything she does, grounding her leadership in kindness and authenticity. During her time at Berthoud High School, she immersed herself in Student Council, where she discovered a passion for leadership and advocacy. Serving

as committee head for Wish Week, she helped lead a community-wide effort that raised over $11,000 for Make-A-Wish. This experience strengthened her belief in the power of collective impact. Outside the classroom, she works as a Child Watch Attendant, where she continues to invest in the lives of young children and families. Inspired by her younger sister’s developmental journey, Hailey plans to study Human Development and Family Studies at Colorado State University. Ethan Kossler is a thoughtful and creative individual whose perspective is shaped by both his artistic talent and his lived experience on the autism spectrum. Growing up in Berthoud, Colorado with his parents and younger brother, Ethan has developed a deep appreciation for family, community, and the value of meaningful connection. Throughout high school, Ethan has worked diligently to strengthen his executive functioning and learning skills, an accomplishment he takes great pride in. Along the way, he discovered not only a passion for art, but also a genuine strength in collaboration. For Ethan, working as part of a team brings out the best in everyone, creating a sense of shared purpose and mutual support. With the support of dedicated teachers and his family, Ethan has grown in confidence and independence. He plans to attend Colorado State University to study Graphic Design, where he hopes to use his creativity to bring people together and foster understanding through visual storytelling. Guided by perseverance, creativity, and care for others, Ethan is committed to using his gifts to positively impact his community and beyond.

Trevor Leidig was born and raised in west Loveland and is a proud graduate of Thompson Valley High School. Throughout high school, he embraced every opportunity to learn, lead, and serve his community. Trevor competed on the varsity tennis and track and field teams, where he specialized in hurdles, while also participating in FBLA, performing as a clarinet player in the Marching Band, and coaching Bill Reed Middle School LEGO Robotics teams. Through the National Honor Society, he coordinated volunteer efforts for the Loveland Rotary Painted Hearts program, a cherished Loveland tradition that allowed him to give back to the community that has shaped him. He also had the privilege of leading a statewide High School Leadership Conference with the Colorado Association of School Boards, an experience that strengthened his passion for leadership and collaboration. This fall, Trevor will attend the University of Colorado Boulder to study Aerospace Engineering as a member of the Engineering Honors Program. He is excited to continue challenging himself, building meaningful connections, and pursuing opportunities to make a positive impact wherever his future takes him.

Dirk Thayer Loveland Classical Schools Attending University of Nebraska Kearney Dirk Thayer has always been driven by curiosity and a desire to understand how things work. What began as a fascination with computers in kindergarten grew into a lifelong passion for computer science and a love of building purposeful technology. Through countless hours of self-directed learning, Dirk developed advanced programming skills, earned Python certifications, and created an open-source software project used by thousands; an accomplishment that reflects both his persistence and his belief that meaningful work is built one step at a time. Beyond technology, Dirk has cultivated a deep appreciation for creativity. A lifelong musician, he has performed both fiddle and classical violin and spent years helping lead his school's annual Madrigals Feast as Head Minstrel. His role as Yearbook Editor-in-Chief also sparked a passion for photography, inspiring him to explore landscape, wildlife, portrait, and drone photography while mentoring younger students along the way. Dirk believes success is measured by building something unique, purposeful, and profound, something that contributes to scientific progress while strengthening human connection. Those ideals are grounded in the values that guide his everyday life: kindness, humility, diligence, and service. He has put those values into practice by volunteering at the Loveland Public Library, where he taught coding, 3D modeling, and fabrication to learners of all ages. Receiving the PVREA Scholarship is especially meaningful to Dirk because he deeply appreciates the organization's genuine commitment to giving back. Knowing the scholarship is funded through unclaimed rebates rather than as a marketing effort reflects the kind of selfless generosity he admires. This fall, Dirk will attend the University of Nebraska Kearney to study Computer Science, with hopes of one day contributing to space exploration and creating technology that makes a lasting, positive impact.

In Berthoud, Colorado, there is a rescue built around the smallest of dogs and the biggest of dreams. Harley’s Dream was founded in 2016 by Rudi Taylor, but its heartbeat began long before the organization had a name. It began with Harley, a tiny Chihuahua who had survived years in a puppy mill, a place where dogs are treated less like living beings and more like products. Harley had lost an eye due to the conditions he was subjected to, yet what remained in him was not bitterness. It was resilience. It was hope. It was the kind of spirit that could move people. He became known as the “Little Dog with a Big Dream,” and that dream grew into a mission: to end puppy mills and save senior dogs. Harley’s Dream began as an effort to raise awareness, educate the public, and advocate against puppy mills. Over time, the mission expanded to include rescuing senior dogs who might otherwise be euthanized in shelters. Today, about 90 percent of the dogs Harley’s Dream rescues are seniors, many of them small breeds, and many arrive with medical needs from years of neglect, abandonment, or surrender. For Rudi, the work is both deeply personal and profoundly purposeful. “Without question, Harley was that dog!” she says of the one who inspired her life in rescue. “Harley truly was magical!” At first, she thought she could use Harley as a way to educate people about puppy mills. But over time, she realized something more humbling had happened. She felt she had become his tool instead. That sense of service continues through every dog Harley’s Dream saves. The rescue focuses on the dogs shelters may call “unadoptable” because of age or health issues. These are the dogs who have been

overlooked, the ones who need dental care, diagnostics, medications, surgeries, or time to feel safe again. Veterinary care is one of the rescue’s greatest challenges, with Harley’s Dream averaging at least $2,000 in medical care for every dog rescued. But the reward, Rudi says, is beyond measure. Watching a frightened senior dog leave a shelter, receive care, and finally find a loving family never gets old. Seeing a neglected or abused little dog wag its tail for the first time is the kind of moment that keeps the mission alive. “Small acts of compassion can completely change a life,” Rudi says. Few stories show that more clearly than Broccoli’s. “The tiny Chihuahua was found wandering the streets of Denver during a 20-degree snowstorm."He was skin and bones, wounded, severely neglected, and one of his eyes was so damaged it had to be removed, leaving him completely blind," Rudi reflects. And still, his spirit was there. Harley’s Dream gave Broccoli the medical care he needed and found him the perfect home with Jonathan. People often say the rescue saved Broccoli, but Rudi sees it differently. She believes Broccoli saved Jonathan. The bond between them became a reminder that rescue is never only about the animal. Sometimes, the dog who needs saving becomes the one who gives someone else purpose, companionship, and unconditional love. That is the quiet miracle of rescue. Harley’s Dream also works to change the future for dogs through education and advocacy. The organization encourages adoption, fostering, volunteering, spaying and neutering, and speaking up against puppy mills. Its Seniors Saving Seniors program, which matches senior dogs with senior adopters, is especially meaningful to Rudi and reflects the rescue’s belief that love does not expire with age. For anyone considering adoption, Rudi offers a simple message: “do not overlook the oldest dog or the one who has waited the longest. Sometimes the dog no one notices becomes the best companion you have ever had.” At its core, Harley’s Dream is about safety, comfort, and love. It is about giving a dog more than extra time. It is about making sure that life matters. As Rudi says, “Every act of kindness matters.” And for every senior dog given a second chance, Harley’s dream continues.

HOW BIG BONES CANINE RESCUE LEADS WITH INTENTION, INTEGRITY, AND A DEEP COMMITMENT TO EVERY LIFE THEY SERVE

There’s a moment, and you don’t really expect it, when a dog realizes it’s safe. It’s not dramatic. No big scene. It’s subtle. You see it in their body first. The tension softens. The pacing slows. Maybe they finally lay down without keeping one eye open. Maybe their tail moves for the first time, just a little. And if you’re paying attention, you realize… something just shifted. That moment stays with you. That’s the kind of work happening at Big Bones Canine Rescue. Not the highlight reel version. Not the quick “before and after.” The in-between moments. The quiet ones that most people never see. Because most of the work doesn’t happen at the end. It happens before anyone ever says “we’ll take them.” Dogs come in from places where time runs out. Shelters. Kennels where the days blur together. Situations where being overlooked

is the same as being out of chances. Places where they weren’t understood, or weren’t given the space to be. And when they arrive here, they don’t immediately become the dog someone hopes for. They just… arrive as they are. And then the real work begins. Some dogs move into foster homes, where the environment gives them space to decompress. To be known, not managed. Someone learns how they sleep. What scares them. What makes them curious again. Others remain in the rescue’s kennels, and even there, they are not left to simply wait. Volunteers show up every single day, walking them, sitting with them, working with them, paying attention to who they are and what they need. There’s effort in those spaces too. Time. Presence. Care that is active, not passive. And across both, something starts to shift. You begin to see personality where there used to be survival. And it doesn’t happen all at once. Some dogs come around quickly. Others don’t. Some take weeks to trust a hand. Some don’t know what to do with kindness at all. And you can’t rush that. You just show up, consistently, until they believe you mean it. And that showing up doesn’t belong to just one person.

It’s fosters opening their homes. Volunteers stepping into the unseen gaps. Transporting, cleaning, organizing, sitting quietly beside a dog who isn’t ready yet. It’s the behind-the-scenes rhythm that keeps everything moving, whether a dog is in a home or a kennel. The kind of care that doesn’t ask to be noticed, but changes outcomes anyway. That’s what makes this different. There’s an intentionality to it. A refusal to shortcut the process just to get to the outcome. Because the goal isn’t just placement, it’s alignment. It’s making sure that when a dog does leave, it’s into something that actually works. For them. For the family. For the long run. And that takes time. It takes attention. It takes people who are willing to stay in the uncomfortable middle where nothing is guaranteed yet. If you talk to the people involved, the fosters, the volunteers, the adopters, you start to hear the same thing in different ways. This isn’t just something they do. It’s something they’ve stepped into. Something that asks more of them than they expected, but gives something back too. Not in a loud way. Not in a way that can always be explained. Just… in the knowing that something mattered. That a life shifted. That something fragile held. And none of it is perfect. It can’t be. This kind of work never is. There are unknowns, learning curves, things you don’t get right the first time. But there’s also a willingness to keep refining, to keep paying attention, to not lose sight of what this actually is at its core. Responsibility. Care. Follow-through. Because at the center of all of it, past the logistics, past the systems, past the scale, there’s something very simple: A dog, standing in a space it doesn’t understand yet… slowly realizing it doesn’t have to be afraid anymore. And someone who stayed long enough to make sure of it.

NOCO HUMANE:

The Heart Behind the Door Where Compassion Meets Second Chances

There is a quiet kind of love that does not ask an animal how they arrived before offering shelter. It simply opens the door. For NOCO Humane, that open door began in 1969, when a group of compassionate community members in Larimer County set out to create a better future for homeless pets. Today, that promise has grown into something larger than one building or one city. With the Larimer Campus in Loveland, the Weld Campus in Evans and the Greeley Adoption Campus, NOCO Humane now serves animals and people across northern Colorado with a mission “To further the compassionate, safe, and responsible relationship between animals and people.” At its heart, NOCO Humane is more than a shelter. It is a place where second chances are handled with medical care, behavioral support, honesty and patience. As an open admission shelter, the organization cares for animals no larger than a goat, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, chickens, ducks and other barnyard animals. Its belief is simple and powerful: “all animals deserve a safe place to go for shelter and care.” That kind of care matters because the story of a shelter animal is often misunderstood. Too many people assume these animals are broken, unhealthy or less deserving because their first chapter did not go as planned. NOCO Humane sees the truth every day. Animals arrive for countless reasons, including housing changes, financial hardship and family circumstances that have little to do with the animal itself. What they need is not pity. They need possibility. “Adopting isn't an act of charity, it's just a great way to find a companion,” shares Scott Wendelberger of NOCO Humane. That statement reframes adoption in the most beautiful way. Adoption is not settling. It is not taking on something damaged. Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it. Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week. Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.” Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered. After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.” The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.
