The Sweetheart of Ohio I remember when Paxton’s was one of the only restaurants downtown. Born and raised here, I’ve seen and lived the transformation. Now we’ve got numerous dining options, plus shopping— oh, you want a coffee, dessert, or maybe a beer? You’ll find everything you need as you stroll the bike trail and beyond. We’ve come a long way ... and in this issue, we wanted to celebrate that. A Valentine’s Day love-themed event in a town with “love” in its first name seems like a natural fit. That’s why a few years ago, the Hearts Afire event was born. Ice sculptures, sweet treats, fire performers, pageants, kids games and the Queen of Hearts have all become staples of this love-filled weekend. This year boasts to be even bigger and better. Read Hunk-a Hunk-a Burnin’ Loveland, grab some red attire and we’ll see you downtown. There’s also a lot to love about Symmes Township! From the parks and library to festivals and holiday events, it’s a happening township. This year marks their Bicentennial, and they will be celebrating all year long with various festivals and dedications—we can’t wait for the one in July. I Didn’t Know Math Could Be Fun! Jacob, age 10, was nervous to show his parents his report card. He was doing great in every subject except math. It’s hard to imagine that the original location for one of the city’s boutique shopping staples was a dining room and garage—but that’s exactly where Wendy Knight, owner of Lemons & Limes Boutique, started her business when she got the urge to fulfill her creative outlet. What began as a fun side project has grown from a website to now three brick-and-mortar stores across the Cincy area. Each store is known for its bright, fun, creative clothing for women, men and children, plus home goods and gifts, jewelry and accessories, holiday and seasonal items, and workshop events such as ink painting and glass etching. But each boutique has its own personality and products, too.

Wendy recently celebrated the opening of her Kenwood location this winter, a stone’s throw away from Trader Joe’s. The Kenwood store is the third for Wendy, following her second spot in Deerfield and the original in historic Loveland. “All of our stores have carefully curated collections that give back, are women-owned or founded, or are local brands,” Wendy explains. Looking for a unique and festive way to spend Valentine’s Day? A place to keep your winter spirits soaring with loved ones of all ages? Come spend the entire Valentine’s Day weekend, February 9 through 11, in the Sweetheart of Ohio! The City of Loveland has planned a Hearts Afire Weekend that’s bound to set your heart aflame to celebrate all things St. Valentine—it’s an event-packed weekend you definitely don’t want to miss.

Hearts Afire Weekend is a somewhat new tradition for Loveland, just starting back in 2022. The city has events they organize and host each year—Independence Day and Memorial Day, to name a few. But, “We’re the City of Loveland, and we didn’t have a Valentine’s Day Celebration,” explains Krista Rose, Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the City of Loveland, and point person spearheading the weekend’s organization.

It started thanks to a pair of Loveland friends—Nancy Duff and Sherri Fening of the city’s Special Events Committee. During the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance’s annual Valentine’s Day breakfast, they couldn’t help but dream up how much bigger the holiday truly could be. From those ideas (shared with city staff), turning Valentine’s Day into a comprehensive weekend-long event in Loveland was a no-brainer. “Our town has so much charm, and people love the name, plus they were already coming here to celebrate Valentine’s Day—so we thought, let’s do something to make it official,” Krista remembers. Maybe the most impressive feat of the weekend, Loveland’s Hearts Afire boasts Cincinnati’s only ice sculpture festival. Free to the public, multiple businesses around town sponsor ice sculptures, which will be on display starting Saturday at noon, with a walking tour available digitally. Not only are there 25+ sculptures for you to view, but there are also other activities to participate in—from arts and crafts to a scavenger hunt, and a wide array of sweetheart decor as you traverse your tour path. Pro tip: on Saturday from 12–6 p.m. along West Loveland Ave, check out the demonstrations showcasing the sheer talent and finesse necessary to make these incredible, 400-pound ice statues. When asked what’s not to be missed, Krista’s answer is immediate and enthusiastic. “We’ll have two types of dance lessons here at City Hall—on Friday night, there’s line dancing, and on Saturday, ballroom dancing.” The instructors come from Lori’s Roadhouse and Cincinnati’s Salsa on the Square, and Krista assures me that every year, the dance lessons are a huge hit. Not to be forgotten, of course, is the Loveland Stage Company. “They’re doing a variety show and a Hearts Afire Valentine pageant for children ages 1 to 4, with proceeds and donations (accepted at the door) that go toward their HVAC Campaign,” Krista mentions. Need to vent a little (harmless) Valentine's vengeance? “New this year is ‘Heartbreak Row’—all along Railway Ave. Hurl an axe or two at ‘Love Is a Battlefield,’ toast an ex’s absence, or belt out some heartbreak with Karaoke.” Krista gushes when she explains there’s something for just about everyone here. When I stepped into the new Ryde 365 studio in Loveland, I had no idea what would be in store for me. The next 45 minutes took me on an adventure with sharp turns, steep hills and shaky

A self-professed “frustrated DJ,” Amy not only spins tunes that fill the gym, she also teaches classes and manages the studio of nine additional instructors. “I wanted to build a small-town feel where everyone supports one another,” Amy shares. “I want my 365 Tribe to leave here with a smile and confidence in themselves.” Hence the tagline stronger than yesterday—at any age or ability, size or shape. The facility on Wards Corner houses RealRyder bikes, which lean side-toside—both engaging your core and eliminating some of the stresses the body experiences on a stationary bike.

Amy is gregarious and charismatic, sharing that a 45-minute workout burns 20 percent more calories than a traditional stationary bike. However, it’s not just the workouts that have clients aged 11 to 75 coming back. “This place keeps me going,” smiles Bob Dunn, a long-time patron who celebrated his 70th birthday on his bike at Ryde 365. “There’s a community here. We encourage one another.” Bob, who sometimes comes twice a day, says the bikes are better on his joints compared to traditional bikes. “I won’t ever use another bike again after trying this one.” It takes trying just one class to find out what everyone is spinning about— especially with this month’s supersweet deal of 5 classes for just $60. Bringing in the Bicentennial SYMMES TOWNSHIP MARKS 200TH YEAR CELEBRATING COMMUNITY How do you pay proper tribute to a bicentennial milestone? It starts with a taste of the township. Formed in 1824 from the eastern portion of Sycamore Township, Symmes Township offers a number of attractions that, to this day, make it a remarkably vibrant and unique community. “Symmes Township has eight township parks, with more than 196 acres for our residents and the surrounding community to enjoy,” explains Administrator Kimberly Lapensee. She adds that part of the Little Miami Bike Trail is located within Symmes Township, too, right in the Camp Dennison area. “We also have a healthy business district along our three main arteries,” she adds, spanning Montgomery Road, Fields Ertel Road and Loveland Madeira Road. “Plus, we have three active cemeteries and three fantastic school systems, all within our township—Indian Hill, Sycamore and Loveland.” There’s more than a dash of history, as well. “We were named after John Cleves Symmes,” Kimberly shares some notable highlights. “Camp Dennison was established as a military campsite in 1861, and Morgan’s Raiders came through there, staying at the military camp during the Civil War in 1863. Symmes was also home to the 16 Mile Stand on Montgomery Road during the era of stagecoaches. Then in 1931, Arthur Rozzi moved to Symmes Township from Pennsylvania to start his fireworks company. And don’t forget the Loveland Castle, which is actually located in Symmes Township.” It was 200 years ago that Symmes Township became independent from Sycamore Township, and a number of celebratory events throughout this year will offer opportunities for entertainment, education, ice cream, and even a 5K run. BECAUSE. CHOCOLATE. C h o c o late Fond ue • 2 cups heavy cream • 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut) • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon brandy • Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice! Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional). Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. For the grown-ups, a spiked chocolate drink from our friend, Martha Stewart.

1/2 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup whole coffee beans 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped • 2 tablespoons Kahlua • 1 teaspoon confectioner's sugar • 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!
