Stickers on a Brown Suitcase Did you watch cartoons as a kid? I grew up with a healthy dose of Bugs Bunny every Saturday morning. I distinctly remember that whenever a character traveled, they all carried the same suitcase. It was brown and covered with stickers from beautiful, exotic places. Or perhaps this rings a bell—when Bugs got to his destination, he’d send someone a postcard with a picture of an ocean or maybe the pyramids … and my six-year-old-self ate it all up (along with my Froot Loops). A world traveler was someone who sent loved ones postcards and carried a suitcase covered in stickers of journeys gone by. It was all so magical! Now, by the time I was old enough (and had a little money) to travel, I had a black roller bag with no stickers (they’re hard to find these days), emails replaced postcards, but the magic was still there, of course. There’s nothing like exploring a new place. Which is why travel plays a big role in this issue. Planning a trip to Disney? April is also our “eco” issue, which I think goes hand-in-hand with exploration—in order to ensure we can explore beautiful places for years to come, we need to take care of our surroundings. That’s why we highlighted four local groups who are doing just that. We also explored Aberlin Springs, a neighborhood built on a working farm—talk about true farm-to-table living! It’s been one of my favorite places to visit (they had me at baby lambs). Read The Food on the Hill and then go tour their model home. It might make you consider moving this year! Loveland High School senior Louise Vermeil has created a mural on West Loveland Ave., a project that took about two weeks. Many of her classmates donated time to help with the painting. “I wanted to make a mural that was both recognizably in my illustrative style and also symbolic of what Loveland encompasses as a city,” she states. The painting is mostly finished, with small details being added in the future to complete the project.

For months, my wife, Nicki, and I have toured one model home after another. We’re empty nesters—so it’s time to move. On a spring-like February day, we drive two miles off I-71 to the Aberlin Springs agri-community just 20 minutes north of Loveland. As we wind up the hill, the sign reads “Happiness Is Just Around the Corner.” We raise a brow. A little cliché maybe? But we round that corner into an experience—and neighborhood— like no other in the tristate. We meet Leslie Aberlin at the Swiss-style chalet—a community space and originally her parents’ home. “This was dad’s office—Fred Aberlin was my king of the dragons,” Leslie smiles. “He focused on King Arthur because he identified with that round table—mentoring was his whole thing.” Eighteen years ago, Leslie founded her homebuilding company, Pendragon (a nod to King Arthur, of course), the exclusive Aberlin builder—a 142-acre community that offers three house styles: Courtyard, Manor and Estate homes, currently in Phase 3 of 5. But more than floor plans or countertops, Leslie is passionate about its mission. “Healthy lifestyle!” she proclaims. “A place where kids run barefoot and they’re not on cell phones. They fish and run in the woods. We also have an herbalist; she’s getting them involved. It’s happening.” Nicki and I point to our boots. Houses can wait. We’re ready to tour the farm. Leslie walks us through a kitchen space where the community hosts open-to-all cooking classes, then through the farm market, and last to the welcoming committee—goats Buddy and Betty. “We have chickens,” Leslie says. “And ducks. We’re trying two different breeds, some for eggs, some for meat.” The farm also boasts two greenhouses. “Is there enough food to sustain the community?” my wife asks. Leslie explains that the farmers researched how many calories a person needs a year—they know how much to grow. Jacob Thompson and Amanda Bloomquist, “partners in all things,” lead the 80-acre farm. After an inspiring permaculture course, Jacob started Barefoot Design, an ecosystem restoration and landscaping company. He was working on Aberlin’s green spaces when Leslie needed a farmer. Amanda’s background is in the wellness industry. Her passion centers on holistic approaches to food. Both were a perfect fit for the community. Jacob says together they want “to create a strong, local food system that builds healthy bodies and minds ... and that’s good for the environment.”
Homes currently start at $500,000 to $1.5 million. Residents pay a yearly $2,500–$2,800 HOA fee and $850 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) fee.
Each courtyard is a habitat. Phase I is committed to butterfly and caterpillar host plants. Pollinators for bees are planted in one courtyard and wildflowers planted in another.

AND T H AT ’S G O O D F O R THE EN V I RON ME N T.” In addition to their regenerative agriculture mission, the dynamic duo (who are residents as well) are deeply connected to their neighbors. Jacob explains that the friendly community is in part due to the homeowners’ shared purpose. Amanda agrees. “In addition to that shared vision and mission is a real desire for community.” As Leslie takes us to houses, everyone greets us. “Even the kids wave,” Leslie says. “We have happy hour, book club, card club, cooking classes. I realized in these other neighborhoods I’ve built in, people were cut off.” Phil Taylor used to live in that kind of neighborhood until his wife brought him to Aberlin kicking and screaming. “I was happy in Anderson and didn’t want to move,” Phil says. Then he smiles. “As a Norwood neighborhood kid, you knew Joey and Tim from next-door, and Mrs. So-and-so who lived across the street. I grew up there, knew everybody, and played outside until the end of the day. But we lived in Anderson for 13 years—I waved at the guy across the street. I knew he was a doctor—that’s all I knew.” It’s different in Aberlin. “Leslie purposely made a community,” Phil continues. “Every house has a front porch.” Phil and his wife live in a courtyard. They eat dinner on their front porch whenever possible—and dinners have never been better. CONTINUED >
Residents do not have to farm. Increasingly, the farmers are able to open opportunities for volunteering and allow residents to really get dirty and dig in.
The farmers are implementing new critters like the Kunekune, a heritage breed—smaller than commercial pigs and less destructive because they graze on grass.
LESLIE ABERLIN, PENDRAGON + ABERLIN SPRINGS PRESIDENT
In 2011, Leslie suffered from an autoimmune disease. Her cure? She attributes it to discovering functional medicine and understanding the toxins in food. She ate organic raw food for two months. The genesis for Aberlin Springs came in a dream about her father—she had an organic farm and she was a homebuilder, and her father said, “Put them together.” She began researching agri-communities that day. I’ve bought the same type and I’m going to try his methodology and see how it goes.” The houses are gorgeous, but Nicki and I can’t seem to concentrate on floor plans and pantries. We want to hear more from Leslie about health, the environment, her plans. “We really need to turn things around—as a community, as a people,” Leslie says. That gives us pause. “That’s why I'm standing out here talking to anybody who’ll listen. It’s serious. But it can also be fun. On a sunny, unusually warm day in mid-February, a flight takes place—launching from a picnic table in the middle of downtown Loveland. Within seconds, the view shifts from a few feet above the ground to treetop level to flying high in the sky. Houses become smaller, streets begin to look like grids on a Google map. Just beyond the streets, the Little Miami river snakes along, framed by the bare limbs of winter woods. From up here, the varying water depths are easy to discern. Is that a big fish or a rock down below? Then … swoop! The view changes again, now beginning to travel up the river.

The Connollys are the founders of JL Aerial Views, a locally based drone photography and videography business serving the Greater Cincy area and beyond. Their business was born from the convergence of the Connollys’ career paths, their personal passions, and, of course, COVID. In the spring of 2020, Lauren found herself furloughed from her longtime job at the Newport Aquarium, where she had been a Dive Safety Officer. About six months later, John retired from the Ohio National Guard. Both stuck at home, the couple wondered what was next. Then, as Lauren surfed the web, an idea came into view—she kept seeing listings for drone photography. “I thought, this is perfect because I love to take pictures, and he’s really good with maps,” Lauren recalls. As they set off to make their entrepreneurial idea a reality, John was able to use a military benefit that covered paying for a drone and printing business cards. The couple also took courses with the Pilot Institute, which preps students to take the Federal Aviation Administration test for drone pilots. Both Lauren and John received their FAA Part 107 Drone Pilot Certification. Within a few months, the Connollys were ready to “test their wings” and started seeking customers. On the way back from an early job, they discovered a unique roadside attraction in Versailles, Indiana. “Did you know? There’s a Stone Henge there, but for a guy named Paul,” Lauren laughs. “We’ve seen some interesting things just traveling around.” They’ve filmed “Crabbie,” known as the world’s largest horseshoe crab statue, located near Hillsboro, Ohio, which they stumbled upon on their way to a friend’s house. “We travel with the drone everywhere— you never know when there’s going to be a good opportunity,” says Lauren.

Since JL Aerial Views took off, the Connollys have filmed real estate properties, businesses, community events, and wedding receptions, including one up the road at Valley Vineyards. Their drone work has even led them to volunteer to help recover a lost dog at night, using thermal imaging. Each project brings fresh perspectives to sometimes familiar surroundings—including revealing neighborhood amenities that are within walking distance to a featured home for sale. For the Connollys, exploring new ways to see things extends beyond JL Aerial Views. Lauren’s other gig, LC Aqua Art, invites customers and the curious to “follow for an art adventure,” specializing in bright and playful watercolor portraits of pets in unexpected hues—such as blue-and-white retrievers and rainbow-colored lap dogs. She’s also one of the five Sirens of “Siren Soapbox,” a weekly podcast that takes listeners along as they explore beyond their comfort zones and encourage other women to do the same. The Connollys have given motorcycling a spin, taken the stage as stand-up comics, gone ghost hunting at Bobby Mackey’s, interviewed authors, and brought on a stop-motion artist who films “fairy-tales with a modern twist.” “No matter where you are in your life, you can still explore and make those steps outside your comfort zone,” says John. As for the talented couple themselves, who first met in high school and became college sweethearts, their adventure surely continues as they move through life and work from whole-new—and ever-changing—perspectives. “Knowing that people come in because they trust me … it means a lot,” Dr. Luke Reineck of Living With Motion Chiropractic says. “Being asked to help neighbors and their families involves a great deal of trust. And I don’t take it lightly.” For Dr. Luke, work is more than just a professional calling. “I live right down the street from the practice,” he says, and explains that it’s really about helping neighbors and contributing to the Greater Loveland community. “My wife had attended UC for pharmacy,” the Toledo native recalls. “And we noticed right away that there’s just something special about this area.” Now, his family is proud to call it home. These days, Dr. Luke is in his 15th year of providing chiropractic care, and he’s celebrating a decade of service with Living With Motion—a practice that is now benefiting from a healthy roster of expanded services. “We’ve always offered a family-based wellness approach to chiropractic care,” Dr. Luke explains. “So it’s important that we constantly assess ways to provide a better service and experience.” That commitment to ongoing education has led to his recent completion of
an International Chiropractic Pediatric Association course, including prenatal chiropractic and the Webster Technique (evaluation of the sacrum—located at the base of the lumbar vertebrae—and its alignment within the pelvis). During treatment, Dr. Luke enjoys educating patients on new ways to achieve health through chiropractic, nutritional care, and stress management. It’s no surprise that movement is at the top of that list. “It’s really about the mobility of your joints,” he explains. “And now we’re offering additional ways to improve flexibility. An individual’s ability to lengthen and move muscles is adjacent to chiropractic care, especially when we’re talking about muscles around the spine.” With that in mind, Living With Motion has also recently added a physical therapist, one specializing in dry needling therapy—which Dr. Luke says has already been able to help many with chronic, long-term issues. They’ve also added certified stretch coaches who perform 1:1 assisted stretching to increase patients’ flexibility. Plus, on staff are two massage therapists with a combined 28 years of experience. “We want to take a ‘whole body’ approach,” Dr. Luke says. “Address spinal joints, take stretching to the next level, maximize motion with flexibility throughout the body. A lot of people think, ‘Well, I can crack my own neck,’ but this is totally different—you get a different effect when someone else is doing it for you. Even when working out, for example, you can go to the gym by yourself … but with a personal trainer, someone who knows what they’re doing, they make sure you’re doing the right stretches, for much better results.” You could say that Dr. Luke is simply answering his family’s call to care for others.

“It all goes back to my dad being in dentistry,” he says, today. “I have two brothers who followed in his footsteps, and I was heading down the path to be a dentist myself.” That’s until he noted the difference between chiropractic care and dentistry. “For one thing, everyone’s excited to come in!” Dr. Luke laughs. “It’s just a different feel, and it fits my mentality … the idea of getting to the root of a problem, rather than saying, ‘Well, my back hurts, so I’ll just take ibuprofen and hope it goes away.’’’ Proper body care, he insists, includes routine checkups and assessment. “Think about it like this,” Dr. Luke offers. “No one’s going to argue about the importance of dental hygiene, right? Well, it’s the same way with the spine—it needs to keep itself clean as well, and it does so with proper motion. We need to keep it hydrated with fluid coming in, and keep it healthy. Friends of the Little Miami State Park LittleMiamiStatePark.org If you’ve recently enjoyed the Little Miami Scenic Trail and admired the beautiful stretch of clear, paved path, you have this group to thank for the pristine condition of your surroundings. “We’re all volunteers, we’re nonprofit, and our goal is to maintain and preserve the 50 miles of the Little Miami State Park,” FLMSP Treasurer Becky Retzer perfectly sums up the nonprofit’s mission statement. Being dedicated to preservation and safety, that includes the removal of non-native species and creating space to bring back local pollinators and native growth. “Part of the goal is planting lots of larger grass areas, putting prairies in for native pollinators, so that there’s less mowing.” But they don’t stop there—when a tree falls, FLMSP are quick to pull out their chainsaws to remove it from the trail. “We aren’t allowed to remove the wood, because it needs to stay where it falls to help preserve the ecosystem.” “It’s a unique park in that it’s 50 miles long, but narrow—just 30 feet,” Becky says of the Little Miami State Park. “And with safety being our primary goal, we encourage everyone to be aware of their surroundings.”

Loveland Beautification Committee
From contests for the public to plant days in both spring and fall, this committee works tirelessly to keep historic Loveland looking sharp all year round. “There are planters all along downtown Loveland—we fill those and make them look good. And we try to do that in a way that is the most plantfriendly,” says Shanda Gentry, LBC’s Vice Chair. The committee dabbles in all kinds of flowers and trees to see what looks best and lasts longest. “For the last four years, we’ve planted trees in the planters for the fall through winter season, and then Public Works removes them and they’re planted in parks around the city.” The committee doesn’t want to waste greenery by planting things that won’t last, and they work hard to keep everything looking, well, beautiful by decorating around the plants, even during the winter season. Full planting days happen once around Mother’s Day, and again in the fall. The committee is 100% volunteer-based, welcoming anyone and everyone who wants to get their hands dirty. CONTINUED >

“It’s not about me, really, it’s about reaching more people—encouraging more people to go outside and be curious and understand that we’re all connected, and we can coexist.” To Jana Marshall, owner and founder, there’s nothing negative about the outdoors. “We don’t say ‘ew,’ or ‘yuck,’ we say ‘interesting’!” And that’s exactly what Jana is out to prove to children and adults alike—nature is fascinating. Along with her trusty companion Minny (a vintage 1970 VW bus with tons of personality), Jana uses the outdoors as her classroom. “Our mission is to inspire and empower youth to explore the natural world, and to connect families with nature through hands-on and unique learning experiences.” A naturalist through-and-through, Jana says she’s always been the kind of kid who was outside until dark, and has always wanted to pursue a career in the natural world. Now, she provides programs to schoolaged kids through after-school programs, works with scouts to complete badge requirements in their local parks, and creates fun birthday experiences that are educational and unforgettable. “Every kid should be able to experience the outdoors,” Jana insists, and through her programming, she’s giving plenty of kids that opportunity. It’s not just about the littles, though. “Kids pass their excitement to their parents—they come home and tell stories that make the adults want to go outside and learn more,” Jana explains. The Roaming Naturalist has opportunities for those inspired adults. From a Scenic Night Hikes Series to a yearround book club with monthly meetups, there are plenty of opportunities for people of all ages to learn with Jana.

Owned by Mike Meldon and Doug Gilbert, Love our Land started in February of 2022. “I’m not a trained environmentalist,” Mike humbly admits. “I’m a teacher who fell into this position. I would walk through the woods and think ‘I’m so lucky to live next to this green space,’ and then I met Doug Gilbert, an ecologist and full-time environmental consultant, and he opened up my eyes to the fact that not all green is equal.” What does that mean? “Yes, it’s green space, but non-native invasive species kill native plants that should support the local ecological food chain—hence a loss of bees, butterflies and other life.” “Our ultimate goal is based on this idea of the homegrown national forest,” Mike states of their mission. To get native species thriving again, oust the invasive plants in our backyards, and bring back the variety of life that once thrived here. It can’t just be a patchwork effort with miles between native plant sanctuaries either—private landowners are key to bringing back our native plant species and allowing them to grow rampant again. Love Our Land is here to educate you on how to create that native plant haven right in your yard. Mike and Doug offer nature walks, events and talks, and Land Stewardship classes. PLANNING WITH MAGICAL MOMENTS VACATIONS As a home-based travel advisor, Renee uses multiple modes of communication to help in the planning process—from emails to calls to coffee meetups. Renee says communicating early and often is one of the best ways to start planning with Magical Moments Vacations—she asks a lot of questions upfront to ensure the vacay of a lifetime. “I need to truly understand what kind of trip clients are envisioning, as well as learn practical information such as travel dates and budget,” she explains. From there, once a ballpark travel quote gets the sign-off, Renee starts working to find the best possible options for lodging and dates, and secures a deposit and vacation package. Then, it’s on to the finer details like choosing a resort style, which parks to visit, dining venues and other entertainment options (think mini golf, fireworks, shopping, live music ...).
