It’s special to find someone living their passion. An individual who has found their place, their calling, their purpose ... living for what they love. As we were planning this issue, we kept coming across stories about local residents doing just that—and it’s only fitting that our “love” issue is a collection of inspirational people who not only pursued their passions, but took them to the (amazing) next level. We’d like to introduce you to Susie Heath. Her love for skateboarding developed at the age of 10. She could be found pushing the limits all around Loveland—and it paid off. Most recently, she was awarded the first-ever colorway for women’s skateboarding shoes by DC Shoes. An honor that she doesn’t take lightly. Now meet Loveland resident John Muenzer. At 60 years old, he became the oldest person to achieve the Grand Slam in open water swimming— which includes swimming the English Channel, the 20 Bridges Manhattan Swim, the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim, and the Catalina Channel Swim. He could never have achieved such a feat if passion wasn’t a main driver. Read Diving into the Extraordinary. Of course, I can’t forget Jacquelyn Hoffman and Emily Dinardo. Their love of art and mission to nurture the creative spirit in children were their drivers in opening The Art Spark—a creative children’s classroom that offers unique classes, camps, events and in-school programs. I’m planning on signing my daughter up for their summer camps this year. I love every article in this issue, and I look forward to spreading that love as readers dive in. Enjoy!

LOCAL SWIMMER GOES THE DISTANCE WITH HIS GOALS—AND SAYS YOU CAN, TOO

Hello, 2023! This is it. This is the year you’re going to do it! You’re going to lose those 10 pounds, run the half marathon, take that overseas trip, swim 20 miles from Catalina Island to the California mainland. Wait. What? Swim 20 miles in the ocean to California?!? Oh, that is so last year for John Muenzer, who on the morning of August 3, 2022, completed the Catalina Channel Swim in 10 hours, 15 minutes, 47 seconds—a personal record. At 60 years of age, this Loveland local became the oldest person to achieve the Grand Slam in open water swimming, which entails swimming the English Channel, the 20 Bridges Manhattan Swim, the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim, and the Catalina Channel Swim. His story is one of unimaginably grueling workouts, menacing waters and plenty of McDonald’s and V8. It’s a nearly superhuman tale, but it can teach the rest of us a lot about setting and achieving goals, even if it’s just cutting carbs or matching all the socks in our laundry.

DIVING INTO THE EXTRAORDINARY

On August 2, John started his swim, entering a rough Pacific Ocean at 11:30 at night. His boat captain had given him a choice—swim now or wait until as late as noon the next day. So, he got in and started swimming in four- to five-foot swells. At one point, he swam across water that was 1.2 miles deep. For a while, a couple of whales joined him. He saw dolphins, too. And when the sun was coming up, he swam over a jellyfish field. “I got there just in the nick of time—if I’d gotten in there an hour earlier, I would’ve run through them just like I did in the English Channel,” John says matter-of-factly. Speaking like a true jellyfish veteran, he explains, “They start to go down when the sun’s coming up, and so when I went over them, they were already three feet below me.” Despite the initial high waves, sea creature encounters, and swimming through “stuff” that was like “worms and straw,” John said the hours went by quickly. He became a machine that just kept moving—with occasional breaks for “feedings,” as he calls them, until the sun came up. Around 8:00 a.m., he could start to see the coast. It seemed so near, but he still had about two and half hours to go. Toward the finish line, his youngest son, Ray, swam the last half mile with him. “That was really special for me,” he smiles. John’s Grand Slam goal—which he began working on in 2009, the year he completed the Tampa Bay and English Channel swims—had been achieved. He did it despite obstacles that included training with a broken foot in late 2021, and with torn cartilage in his left wrist in early 2022. Then, of course, there was COVID, which caused all the pools to shut down. But that didn’t stop John from finding a way to swim—he simply drove to a lake about half an hour from his house.

“I was swimming out there by myself in literally 45- or 50-degree water … with logs,” he recalls. And if the thought of working out after working all day makes you just want to lie on the couch and binge-watch Netflix, consider John, who in the middle of the winter was getting up just before 4:00 a.m. to swim three to three-anda-half hours a day before work. For John, the secret to staying on track— through jellyfish, logs, COVID and injuries—was commitment. It was his North Star, and he absolutely refused to give up on it. “Once you start the commitment on anything—I don’t care what it is—you’ve got to finish it.” He also used time as a strategic advantage. There was a board at his office in West Chester, listing his 56 weeks of training, and he would cross off each week as he completed it. John asserts, “Your goal will find you, because time never stops.” Like any endurance athlete, John didn’t start off swimming 20 miles at once. He built up to it, going from swimming 4,000 yards a day to 14,000-yard daily workouts before tapering down. CONTINUED >

Very few of us plan to swim 20 miles in the open water. In fact, John is one of only 27 people who have completed the Grand Slam in open water swimming. However, we can all have goals that motivate us to move forward. As John sees it, we’re all on our own path to create our own story of the extraordinary—it may not be one that makes us famous, but pursuing it can lead to self-discovery, and for John, a great sense of fulfillment. “All of us are born ordinary,” John reflects. “It’s how we find what we’re extraordinary at— then take that extraordinary and build it into our lives.” So, if it’s a grey day outside, and it’s oh-so-tempting to stay in your cozy pants and watch that next episode, John has this invitation: “Get up off the sofa. You only get to live one time, so go create your own story. It’s fun.” Jellyfish and all.

S PA R K S F LY Two Teachers Igniting Creativity and Changing the Way Kids Think and Learn Tucked away behind two magical doors in Symmes Township is a studio space unlike any other. Hidden here among the paint and paper, glitter and glue (and clay to boot), is a world of creativity—a place where no child’s idea is too big, and each one is encouraged to chase their creative sparks ... those initial idea-bursts of creativity. When you walk into The Art Spark: A Creative Classroom, you enter a space where the only boundaries are your imagination. The Art Spark was created in 2010 by Emily Dinardo and Jacquelyn Hoffman, two aspiring art educators who were fresh out of college. “We were both so passionate about what we had learned from working with Julie Pfeiffer at The Imaginattic, that we both wanted to start our own business,” Emily reminisces on the early years she spent working with Jacquelyn in the community. When The Imaginattic decided they were closing their doors for good, Emily and Jacquelyn decided it was their turn to step up to the plate to fill the spot this closure would leave behind. With some help and resources from mentor Julie and the former Imaginattic,

Emily and Jacquelyn initially opened The Art Spark at Rockwern Academy in Kenwood. And while this location was a great place for their passion project’s birth, The Art Spark’s growth and expansion called for a change in space, so in 2016 The Art Spark moved to its current location—an adorable beige building between Loveland and Indian Hill with bright teal doors, two rooms for studio space, and plenty of windows to let in the natural light. Getting The Art Spark started was a big effort, but through perseverance, Emily and Jacquelyn made it happen. Jacquelyn emphasizes that letting the community know they existed was the start of it all. “We didn’t say no to any opportunity. We supplied arts and crafts all over the city to get the word out. And it was great because some things would come up that we never even thought of offering … but we’re still doing those things today!” Now, the programs and possibilities The Art Spark offers are endless. From summer and winter camps to Sparklers’ night out and birthday parties, there’s something for every child at The Art Spark.

So who is the target audience of an Art Spark class? Put simply—kids. Of all ages. There are offerings for children as young as 1-1/2 and going all the way up to 10 years old—including Mommy and Me classes starting at 18 months. Once they reach 3 years old, kids can be enrolled in the Little Painter’s Preschool program, where children are in class Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., and follow a class schedule. “It’s all related back to art—they’re learning math, science, reading and more all through art projects,” Emily explains. “All of the subjects are seamlessly integrated while they’re creating—they don’t even realize that they’re learning because we’re always creating while we’re doing it—and parents sign them up because they love art.” And that’s the beauty of The Art Spark. Why just talk about what lives under the ocean, when you can create a whole underwater castle with papier–mâché fish swimming right in front of your eyes? Through immersive adventure, the students at The Art Spark can learn through play in a world they’ve created. After they graduate from preschool at age 5, summer and winter camp options are available. The Art Spark even spends time in local schools providing after-school art education. Want to enjoy a night out and let the kiddos have some fun of their own? The Art Spark has a program on Friday nights called Sparklers night out, which provides kids with an art project and pizza while their parents can enjoy some time of their own. It’s not unusual to see lots of familiar faces at The Art Spark. “What kids accomplish when they’re here is really up to them … their creativity and their ideas,” Emily smiles. “I think that’s part of the reason why kids always come back. They know their ideas matter here.” But community is key to The Art Spark’s continued function, and in fostering a sense of comfort and welcome in their studio, Emily and Jacquelyn have made a safe space for kids to express themselves and be social with their peers. “That’s our thing here at Art Spark—creating really good memories for kids. That way they can look back for the rest of their lives and think ‘I was creating then. I was making things. important to her as Loveland was as she was growing up. She points to nonprofit Skate Like A Girl, which is committed to creating an inclusive community by promoting confidence, leadership and social justice through skateboarding. “It’s an accepting and welcoming community,” she explains. “Skateboarding is unlike any other sport,” Susie smiles. “I’ve met most of my best friends simply going to a skatepark. There’s such a strong community of skaters everywhere!” Susie should know—she’s landed dizzying maneuvers in plenty of locales far from home. “I still can’t believe some of the places I’ve been to on tour … Costa Rica, Panama, Barcelona, and all across the United States.” The old saying—if the shoe fits, wear it—not only applies to Susie’s career, but has now allowed her to encourage others to take up a sport that’s changed her life. “It’s an amazing experience,” Susie says about her passion for skateboarding, and taking it on tour to so many others. “I’m so excited for what comes next!”

“I was in shock,” says Loveland native and amateur skateboarder Susie Heath, about the call from DC Shoes inviting her to become the first woman to decide the colorway for one of their sneakers—a color scheme choice that’s just as important as a shoe’s model. “It was a scary feeling,” she continues, before proudly adding, “but one of the biggest opportunities of my life!” What began as a way to pass the time— rolling through downtown Loveland, visiting regional skateparks—has now become her calling. Susie’s skateboard has helped her amaze crowds around the world, and inspire others to do the same. DC Shoes is one of the world’s largest companies specializing in skateboarding shoes and related activewear, boasting “super-durable and skateable slip-ons.” The global action sports brand also proudly points out a few cool details on this local’s design. “Susie added some personal touches—from custom daisy artwork on the foxing tape to the Ohio flag print on the heel.” For Susie, the skateboarding community is one that’s just as supportive and
