Once you hear about New Life Furniture Bank, we’re betting you’ll be inspired to volunteer to roll up your sleeves and get involved. Heather Voit, New Life’s marketing and communications director, beams with pride as she shares her compassion for the people they help—and the collective enthusiasm for the incredible work they do. While the main mission of NLFB is to provide gently used furniture to families in need, that’s only part of the story. Heather explains how founder Holly Young’s chance meeting with a family led her to start the organization in 2009. “Holly noticed a mom and her children looking through a dumpster—and found out they were there searching for something to sleep on. Holly had been volunteering with an organization that connected homeless people to housing resources … meeting this family made her realize there was a piece of the puzzle that was missing. People who get help with housing often live in those spaces without furniture, which leads to desperate acts like searching the trash for a mattress.” Such circumstances can lead to bigger issues, too, Heather points out. “When people are left to make a bed out of blankets on the floor, or eat dinner on the floor, it takes away their dignity. Many stop caring about their space, stop paying rent, and end up back in a shelter. With furniture, people are much more likely to stay out of homelessness.” You read that right–simply having furniture can increase their chance of success. Holly collected items for the mom and children she found searching the dumpster, and was able to get enough to fully furnish their apartment. She continued repeating the process, and slowly but surely, New Life Furniture Bank grew into what it is today. The nonprofit now helps families in dire circumstances by furnishing empty houses so they can feel more like a home. Last year, they served almost 1400 households. “We deliver and set up an entire household of furnishings and essentials like fresh linens, dishes, pots and pans,”

Heather explains about part of their work. “We start by asking each client what they need. And because we now partner with interior designers through our Design With a Heart program, we also get to ask about their design and decor preferences as well. Normally, no one’s ever asked what they want or like beforehand. We do our best to meet requests, and somehow, we’re able to give many clients just what they’d hoped for.” She goes on, emphasizing, “Watch the stories on our website—especially the video that shows the move-in process. You get to see a family coming in for the reveal. What you don’t see is that one little boy’s bed was delayed, and I had to break the news to him that his bed wasn’t available yet—but his only concern was if his sister had a bed.” Even more impressive? The Furniture Bank can now help even more people as it continues to grow and thrive, especially with the organization’s most recent addition. “New Life Furniture Thrift Store is now open in Sharonville!” Heather shares, excited. “All of the sales fund our mission, plus it allows us to accept more donations, even clothing and large appliances. In the past, we’ve had to say no to certain things like large sectional sofas and china cabinets. Now, we can fill the store with donations, and people in the community can find affordable items for their homes.” Shopping at the new thrift store is just one way you can support NLFB—there are so many interesting ways to help, even for older kids and teens. Volunteering is easy, but does need to be pre-scheduled for logistics purposes. It can’t be stressed enough, donating furniture is easy— one call, a gas contribution, and New Life comes to you to pick up that couch, bed, table or chairs. Best of all, you know it’s going directly toward a family in need, rather than getting lost in any donation-sorting shuffle. Whether you donate, volunteer or shop … you’ll be helping an amazing organization, while helping make someone’s home— someone’s life—better.

When the time came recently to reassess its relationship with students, Loveland City Schools looked no further than the familiar adage, “It takes a village.” There, it found support from neighbors in concept and direction, ultimately leading to a stronger community for everyone. “If you have a community pulling for the district’s success, staff members who feel valued and supported, and families who know their children are being taken care of at school, you can’t lose,” says Mike Broadwater, Loveland City Schools Superintendent. And, with that, the school’s new strategic vision was born. After all, Mike points out, Loveland schools belong to the community. “We’re here for students and families … and doing it all with the support of our community,” he says. “Getting people together to talk about the future they want for Loveland students has been a great way to remind everyone that we all have very similar hopes and dreams for our students.” It wasn’t long after seeking community feedback that hundreds of survey responses made their way to district offices, and a number of community input sessions were attended by dozens of individuals. Then, when a call was put out for volunteers, nearly 130 people responded. “We put them all on the team,” Mike happily reports. “It was great to have that many students, families, community members and staff in the room together … all having student-focused conversations.” Two big themes came out of this strategic vision work: Career Pathways and Community Partnerships. It’s crucial that students understand the numerous pathways to success, Mike points out—which can take place through college enrollment, pursuing a skilled trade, military service or immediate employment. “To create those opportunities to grow job skills, you need partnerships with local businesses and community members. We already partner with local companies and government agencies on apprenticeships, internships and career opportunities,” he says, stressing that those programs will be now supported even more than before. Mike also identified four areas of importance for Loveland City Schools’ new strategic vision: Student Success, Collaborative Culture, Community Engagement, and Facilities/Finance. “Student success is the core business—academic excellence and career readiness,” he explains. “Collaborative culture means ensuring students are resilient, have problem-solving skills, and everyone feels like a valued member of our community.” “Community engagement is about making sure we keep our community informed and involved—people want to know what is happening and how they can volunteer or attend events.

And everything comes down to fiscal responsibility … we have to be responsible with every dollar we spend and ensure our community understands our financial needs and decision-making.” Transparency and communication, of course, go hand-in-hand. “When people can read in clear terms what the district is working toward, it’s easier for them to give you their support,” Mike finishes. “And the success of any district comes down to the support of your community, staff and the families you serve.”

In fact, I’m still in touch with a number of my former students— that’s why you do it, to build relationships. While I’ve helped a lot of kids, they’ve helped me even more … to develop as a person.

A STRONG SCHOOL SYSTEM IS SO IMPORTANT FOR A COMMUNITY BECAUSE … I think it’s a symbiotic relationship—you have to be supportive of each other. When you’re supporting kids, that will always reflect on a community, as it should. If you go to Loveland High School on any given day, you’ll see a lot of activities going on, and that’s the community. It’s an awesome community, and they really support us well.

Retired Racing Greyhounds Get a New Leash on Life 30

When the doorbell rings at the Turner household, four long, sleek snouts line up at the front door with a cold, wet welcome. Doug and Sarah Turner are parents to teenage daughter, Emily, plus fur babies, Eva, Rummy, Sheeba and Sid. The tall, lean dogs are retired racing greyhounds, adopted into the family through Greyhound Adoption of Greater Cincinnati (GAGC). And while they are eager to greet and meet someone new, they quickly retreat to various cushions in the family’s living room, ears back and tongues hanging out, super chill. Doug fell in love with the unique breed when he and his mom adopted their first two greyhounds in 1995—since then, he and his family have adopted six others and fostered more than 15. “I’m like a moth to a flame when it comes to these dogs,” Doug says. “There’s something about them that I’ve been drawn to for decades.” Now a senior at Lakota West High School, Emily is used to being surrounded by her fur family. “All my friends say, ‘Oh my gosh, your dogs are so big!’ And I’m like, ‘They’re big babies!’” Emily laughs. “One of my first very clear memories is little 4½-year-old me running alongside Wally, our first family greyhound. We picked each other.” When they retire from the track and enter the adoption process, many greyhounds are coming into homes for the first time and must navigate suburban basics, like how to go up and down stairs, and the dangers of slippery floors and glass doors. “It’s amazing. Our dogs kind of show the fosters the ropes,” Sarah says. “That’s why the foster program works so well,” Doug adds. “They’re very intelligent and pick up on the patterns of the other greyhounds. We get them acclimated.” The four pets are happy at home with the Turners, and each displays its own unique personality. At age 12, Rummy is the diva of the pack. Nine-year-old Eva sprawls on her back on the couch with legs midair in a pose the Turners call “cockroaching.” Four-year-old Sid’s tongue is often hanging out—he’s still learning how to share squeaky toys with 2-year-old Sheeba, the newest addition to the family. Of course, all of the pups enjoy treats and are motivated by scratches behind the ears.

“They are the best dogs—so sweet and so loyal,” Emily shares. GAGC Founder and President Brenda Pennix of Liberty Township has been in the business of finding loving homes for retired racing greyhounds for 25 years. What started as a hobby has grown into a passion—the organization celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, having placed more than 1,500 dogs in tri-state homes. “I’ve found it’s my mission to find loving homes for greyhounds,” Brenda says. “The Turners are super owners. I wish all of my families were as passionate about their dogs as they are!”

While greyhounds tend to be sensitive creatures that love human attention, they are pretty low-maintenance and require no more exercise than your average pup. GAGC dogs come from caring owners and healthy training environments. “There’s a common misconception that they’re high-energy animals that come from a bad experience—the truth is quite the opposite,” Brenda explains. “They are 45-mile-an-hour couch potatoes,” she says. “We don’t rescue dogs—they’re all cared for very well. We simply find homes for them.” But since they are sprinters trained to chase game, greyhounds can only come off

leash in a fenced area. After some morning “zoomies” around the yard, the Turner’s fab four spend a majority of the day relaxing, living out the dog days of summer in the air conditioning. BUILDING A BETTER COMMUNITY WITH IMAGINATION IN MIND, ONE HOME AT A TIME

From hidden doors to climbing walls to indoor slides, lifelong Loveland resident John Hill knows a thing or two about having fun. That’s because when he’s not busy taking on traditional construction projects (aka, moving mountains of pea gravel or excavating lots for new homes) with his John Hill Construction team, John can usually be found bringing indoor child-friendly areas to life. “It’s easier if I think of my own kids or my grandkids,” John smiles. “We get a lot of inspiration from clients. Once we understand a vision, we can customize it for the space we’re working with—the details are for us to figure out!” When asked further about his most dazzling dream-like playroom creations, John’s quick to add that his team has also completed customized study rooms, as well. “Creating something like that … for that time in a youngster’s life, and for them to enjoy it, a designated place to teach and learn— it means so much to create something that perfectly fits the people who are there to play, learn and grow.” John says he’s just doing his part to build a better community. “I’ve lived in Loveland all my life,” he says. “Our business is in its 25th year. He also has a hard-won reputation for utmost attention to detail. Pupstanding Citizens MILO JAY AND LUNA MAE Dog stars? We’ve got two. Meet Milo Jay and Luna Mae, a dynamic brother and sister corgi duo—our cover models and winners of our annual contest! We knew you’d want to get up close and personal with these two pups (I know I did!), so let’s start with the basics—Luna Mae is a soon-to-be 3-year-old sable and white Pembroke Welsh Corgi; her brother, Milo Jay, also a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, is a tricolor doggo who just turned 2. Bailey Vermette, Luna and Milo’s lucky mom and owner, describes the two as a classic cheerleader-and-football-jock duo. “Luna is super energetic and happy-go-lucky, and Milo’s just super chill.” Despite being night and day personality-wise, these two are the best of friends. “They absolutely love each other, but bother the heck out of each other,” Bailey smiles. And while both pups are the greatest fur-children any dog mom could ask for, Bailey has aspirations for Milo Jay. After seeing how quick Milo is to comfort Bailey whenever she’s sick or going through big emotions, it seems Milo’s future will now hold service work of his own—like visiting Children’s HMC to help kids through tough times.

Not only are these two sweet and lovable (and soon to be working), they’re also active in their Loveland community, inviting all of their puppy friends to birthday parties and corgi meetups at Bailey’s local business, Old School Pix. The last Old School Corgi Meetup boasted a whopping 100 corgis and local vendors. And Milo’s most recent birthday party? A superhero-themed bash that included his own Old School Pix truck photo shoot, and plenty of corgi friends to bark him “happy birthday!” Old School Pix operates out of an old, rehabilitated school house (which is also available as usable space) with decorated vintage trucks that can be rented off or on-site—guests are frequently greeted by Luna and Milo’s smiling faces. Bailey and her mother, Stacey, run Old School Pix together—you can bring your own photographer, or hire Bailey to take pics of you and whoever else is feeling camera-ready. “People will bring their pets with them to be photographed, and that’s a lot of fun,” Bailey says. Since this issue is also all about kids, we wanted to get the scoop straight from the source—introducing our guest writer/photographer (and the youngest to ever have a byline in Loveland Lifestyle!). Hi, my name is Isis—although I usually go by Icy. I’m 14, and I take pleasure in all things baking. I started baking in my family’s restaurant, Balance Café, when I was around five years old— and have been creating recipes ever since. I love photography, writing, reading, and of course, baking. I created this recipe with the hope of sparking memories and creating new ones!

CULINARY CREATIVITY + SCRATCHED-BAKED GOODNESS FROM ONE TEEN CHEF

ICY’S CINNAMON APPLE MUFFINS ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • •

2–3 dashes of cinnamon 1 tsp agave (option, substitute maple syrup) 10 tbsp brown sugar (divided) 2 medium-sized apples, peeled and cored (Gala or Honeycrisp recommended) 2 tbsp margarine (option, substitute butter) ½ cup of granulated sugar ½ tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder 1 1/3 cups of apple puree 2 eggs 1 2/3 cups of all-purpose flour

directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350°, then prep your apple mix: In a medium mixing bowl, add cinnamon, agave, and 2 tbsp brown sugar. Dice the apples, add them to cinnamon, agave and brown sugar, and combine thoroughly. In a skillet over medium heat, add the margarine and apple mix. Cook until soft and golden brown, around 7 to 10 minutes. Once complete, set apple mix aside. 2. In a separate bowl, whisk together granulated sugar, remaining brown sugar, baking soda, and baking powder. Add the apple puree, eggs, and apple mix. When evenly blended, add the flour. (If you don’t have allergies, I encourage you to add your favorite nut to this mixture—I used 1/3 cup walnuts.) 3. Scoop into your favorite baking cupcake liners until 2/3 full. Bake for 18-25 minutes until golden brown and toothpick inserted comes out clean. Remember that chunks of your apple mix may seem wet. Enjoy!

“Some cheaper foods are full of fillers and other unhealthy ingredients,” says Dr. Peter Hill, PetCare’s veterinarian. “Look at product labels so you can see what the food contains—many brands also have specific lines geared toward puppies and kittens, older animals, small and large breeds, hairball control, weight, etc.”

BRUSH THEIR TEETH REGULARLY.

“If you have a tolerant pet, you can brush their teeth daily,” Dr. Hill offers. “If not, there are many products on the market that allow pets to do the work on their own, like dental chews or water additives. Good oral health is the first step to making sure you have overall healthy pets.”

KEEP THEM ACTIVE.

“Activities not only give your pet physical exercise, but they’re also good for their mental health,” Dr. Hill notes. “Exercise gives your pets a chance to release pent-up energy from hanging around the house all day.” And isn’t throwing a ball or toy with your pet fun for you, too?

“Yearly exams—twice a year for older pets— help us have a better chance of catching diseases and other issues early … which is also when they’re easier to treat.”

“Pets should be kept on preventatives yearround,” Hill encourages, even when the weather turns cold. “Heartworms are spread through mosquito bites (and can be fatal in dogs) while intestinal parasites get spread through feces. Plus fleas and ticks—no one wants to battle any of those!”
