My favorite day during a long weekend away is the second. Day one you arrive, get your bearings, explore, get lost, unpack and then finally unwind. But the second day? That’s how I feel about the month of July. July is like the second day of a trip—it’s full-on summer. June is sometimes cold, and warm weather can be touch-and-go. August, it’s back-to-school time. So, that’s why July is always our summer issue. Summer is a time for adventure—hello, Loveland Canoe & Kayak (or should I say, Loveland Paddlesports?). A dependable, quality roof is a lot more than simple shingles and tar—it’s a first line of defense against rainstorms, snowfall, branches and other seasonal hazards. Every homeowner can attest, however, to how tough it can sometimes be to keep up with roof maintenance. From routinely clearing debris to inspecting for signs of wildlife, there’s a lot that can prevent a roof from operating at its best. In a worstcase scenario, roof replacement can be one of the costliest home expenses. So, it makes sense that someone finally proposed a breakthrough solution to an age-old roof maintenance problem. For more than 20 years, Donnie Powell of Finer Lawn and Landscaping has been reshaping the outdoor areas of homes in Loveland (and beyond). And we’re not just talking lawns (though they do that, too)— think stone walkways, complete outdoor kitchens, full redesigns and pool decking. Whether nip, tuck or total makeover, Finer Lawn has you covered.

When the Hearns first approached Donnie for help, their backyard was begging for a head-to-toe do-over. “When I met the Hearns, the backyard and pool were outdated—there was old, cracked concrete around the pool, overgrown landscaping, drainage issues and the outside space was in dire need of a complete makeover,” Donnie says. So Finer Lawn did just that. To start, they demoed all the concrete around the pool, then tore out an old gazebo, the landscaping and a rotting deck. In about four weeks, they helped the Hearns come up with a design and installation that included everything they wanted. Now, their backyard is a stunning paradise that includes more than 2,000 square feet of practically maintenance-free pavers, all new landscaping around the pool, and a 20' x 20' custom pavilion with built-in grill space, outdoor refrigerator, granite countertops, ceiling fan and TV. “It’s like you’re on vacation as soon as you enter the space,” Donnie smiles.

“The Nortons had an old deck that had seen better days as well as overgrown landscaping—the whole area was in need of that Finer touch,” Donnie recalls. Together, Donnie’s team and the Nortons finalized a plan and, two weeks later, completed phase one: the installation of a completely new 1,000-square-foot decorative paver patio and steps. Phase two added a custom roof covering and fireplace. Now the Norton’s backyard is fit for yearround enjoyment complete with a gas fireplace—a space they can enjoy for years and years to come. “We provided a custom design that met both their needs and budget,” Donnie says. The Entertainer Donnie admits that the Barri project was one to remember: Their backyard had an old patio that was sunken and full of weeds. The landscaping was overgrown. The entire space was in need of the kind of overhaul that Donnie and his team love most—and are experts with. To begin, they worked with the Barri family to provide a scaled drawing that encompassed their vision and fit their budget. The project itself took about a month to complete, with Finer Lawn installing 2,100 square feet of decorative patio pavers that spread from one end of the home to another. There was more—then came concrete, decorative blocks, lighting landscaping, a water feature, three seating walls and six illuminated columns. “The Barri family sometimes hosts up to 50 people at one time, so now there’s plenty of room for all their friends and family,” Donnie says. “The different seating walls create plenty of built-in seating for all the guests to get together.” Donnie says his favorite space from this project is the outdoor kitchen—it’s now equipped with a Blaze grill, an outdoor refrigerator, a griddle and a sink surrounded by granite countertops. At night, the Barris’s outdoor space lights up like a resort on the beach, thanks to several low-voltage lights and column lights installed as a patio feature. In addition, the water installation adds the perfect sound and ambiance to the space. “This is truly a beautiful space—one that could be customized to fit any home’s budget and footprint,” Donnie explains. Most locals think Loveland Canoe & Kayak. The rental-retailer has been a staple for 45 years— the last 19 with Mark and Robin Bersani at the helm. A family-friendly outfitter helping expert paddlers and newbies alike enjoy some nature therapy on the Little Miami. They’ve even given their name a new look—to officially now become Loveland Paddlesports. That should be it, right? That’s the story—rent a kayak, enjoy the trip. Maybe come back and do it again. But that’s not even dipping a toe in the water. There are river cleanups, river conservancy, river councils. There’s getting urban teens outdoors, and teaching their young staff real life skills. Loveland Paddlesports is so much more than a place to float—it’s a place to thrive. “We’ve kind of fallen in love with being stewards of the river,” Mark shares. “But my wife and I really get a lot of satisfaction out of working with these amazing kids.” Amazing indeed. After their “season in the sun,” many former crew go on to be teachers, professors, doctors, Army Rangers, SEALS. “That’s our stewardship, too, this opportunity to teach these kids. They stay with us for a few years, then move on—and do great things.” No other place has this dedication—and environment— for encouraging kids to practice leadership, teamwork, mentorship, customer service, all in one job. Make no mistake—it’s hard work, physically demanding and busy when the weather is fine. In 2020, retail sales went through the roof, going from selling 80 kayaks a year to 250 (225 last year as well). And 16,000 paddlers? That’s a good summer— during Covid, it was 23,000. But at every turn, Mark and Robin’s young team rose to the occasion. “The kids fuel us, they really do—it’s what gives us energy, that so many of them are doing the amazing things we always expected they would. That stewardship piece—it’s just in our DNA.” “My mantra is ‘not all those who wander are lost,’” Mark smiles. “I’m happiest that way.” And wander they will—after this season, you’ll find Mark and Robin on the road to as many National Parks as they can hit in their new Airstream. And next year? Back on the river. “The work—it’s ongoing. And I love that.”

Covid taught us some lessons.” These days, everything is online—reservations, payments, waivers.
