FOOD TRUCK FAVE PARKS NEW STORE NEAR DOWNTOWN LOVELAND
Well, this is exciting—how often does an already-popular food truck open a permanent location? While the truck isn’t going anywhere (so to speak), The Chili Hut’s owner, Fadi Khalilieh, opened his first non-mobile location near downtown Loveland earlier this year. Operating out of its distinct red-and-white truck for the last nine years, The Chili Hut has been spreading happiness and building an enthusiastic fan base (just read the reviews!) across the city with its authentic Cincinnati-style chili items, walking tacos and slaw. I took one look at the menu and recruited a friend to head over to check it out. We enjoyed everything we ordered (ahem, more than was reasonable) off the made-from-scratch, locally-sourced, family-recipe menu. With no leftovers in sight, I think I might have a new favorite go-to.
Introducing a new Cincy chili recipe to Chili-Town seems bold, but the immediately likable Fadi was happy to share how his chili, truck and new brick-and-mortar store came to be. “I’m passionate about my hometown,” explains the Madeira High grad. “I grew up with that signature chili. My dad, Jiries (whom everyone calls Jerry), moved here from Palestine in the 70s. We had a restaurant when I was little—that’s where the family recipe came from … but my dad improved it.” Jerry tinkered with ingredients until he came up with a version he was happy with— thicker, less sweet, with a kick. It’s the recipe Fadi still uses today (with Jerry’s blessing). Surprisingly, Fadi never considered working in the restaurant biz. His food truck started in 2013 as a weekend side-hustle, when this business and education major found himself in a challenging job market following college and grad school. Fadi, who planned to teach, began refurbishing the truck he fondly remembers as “a death-trap on wheels.” He then hit the road and has been converting customers and skeptics to lifelong fans ever since. “I love changing the perception of Cincinnati chili for out-of-towners or people who don’t normally like it—I love it when they say this is their new favorite.” The extra space at the Loveland store gave Fadi the opportunity to expand the menu. You’ll still find your truck faves, but there’s also grilled cheese, salads and paninis, too. I have my eye on the Gouda Grilled Cheese for my next visit—plus a side of chili, which I might just pour over the top. Don’t be deceived by the short menu—off-menu ordering is definitely a thing here. You could go classic (jalapeños optional), a slaw dog, or a spicy mett-style coney (called the Eden Pork), but some regulars get creative. “What I call the yin-and-yang bowl is popular— half chili, half slaw,” Fadi recommends. “Adding hot dog slices to ‘ways’ is a common request, too.” True to his tagline, “It’s ALWAYS Chili in Cincinnati.” Come browse the menu, get hungry, stop in—the store is just around the corner from Loveland Dairy Whip (spot the truck? Even the best round of golf can be dampened by a cloudy sky, blinding sun, pricey greens fees, or beer stops and costly (subpar) concessions that break the bank. Fortunately, SGN Golf has a totally modern solution. “The weather here is always a perfect 72 degrees,” says co-owner Drew Broderick. “Rainy days, mud, heat and humidity don’t factor in here.” That’s not all. Guests can bring their own drinks and food to the indoor virtual golf facility—think your favorite craft beer, party provisions or takeout dining. Even better? Private play can continue into the late night hours, suiting nearly any schedule. “We’re open until 3 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It’s a great way to spend a night out instead of going to a bar.” Thousands of guests have already visited to play a round (or two) since the Broderick brothers, David and Drew, opened SGN’s doors just last year. But only half of them, Drew estimates, are from the Loveland area alone.

“We’re bringing people from all over the tristate area into Loveland,” Drew says, explaining that other guests travel from Kentucky, Dayton or even farther. It all began innocently enough—after investing in a virtual golf simulator for his own home, Drew remembers his friends and family quickly lining up to check it out and play for themselves. It fast became apparent that an indoor virtual golf facility would be a hit. From the start, Drew knew a facility with enough space to accommodate parties would be a big win. “You aren’t limited to a golf course hot dog here,” he laughs, and points out that visitors are free to bring along whatever refreshments they like. “Folks who might not be here for golf still enjoy hanging out, watching their friends compete, or catching televised games and events … it’s a great environment, even for those who might not be ready yet to play a virtual round themselves.” As for the game itself, Drew maintains that there are plenty of benefits to indoor play. First: the built-in tools designed to perfect your game. Each simulator provides ball and club data, and the cutting-edge software includes a number of mini games and practice ranges. “You can also play with bigger groups,” Drew adds. “On the course, you’re limited to four people—here, you can play with up to eight. Groups of 20 take part in league play, and everyone can hang out together.” Best of all? “Take as long as you want with each hole!” Drew says. “There’s no group behind you, rushing you along.” Or, if a quick game is indeed what you’re after, the simulators enable swift play. “A solo player can get through 18 holes in an hour,” he points out, stressing the importance of being able to plan exactly when your game wraps up—instead of falling victim to the whims of an unpredictable course. “It’s a great way for friends to get a round in, even if they don’t have half a day to dedicate to golfing,” Drew smiles. “It’s a place where everyone—not just golfers—can have a great time!” A second SGN location is coming soon to Mason, and pro tip—SGN gift cards are perfect for Father’s Day. The Wow Factor HOLMES CUSTOM RENOVATIONS MAKES THEIR OWN HOME STAND OUT AND SHINE BRIGHT

LOWRY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J CAPPS BUSINESS IMAGE SERVICES You might think if you were in the home renovation business, it would stand to reason that your own house would be perfect—exactly the way you want it—from the get-go … Every indoor space would be usable, the flow seamless. The outside would have immediate curb appeal, and you’d be thrilled whenever you made the turn onto your street and your house came into view. Then again, the opposite could be true—that you’ve spent so much time on the business of making other people’s home dreams come to fruition, you’ve made no time to work on your own. Such was the case for Ian and Lori Holmes of Holmes Custom Renovations, LLC, a local company that’s been focusing on exterior

renovations (windows, siding, decking and more) in the Cincinnati area since 2005. Even though they moved into their current home in 2004, it took until just this past year for them to find the time and the resources to upgrade both the exterior and interior—and finally give it that “wow factor” they always knew it could have. Why? Well, like everyone who runs a business knows, “It’s harder to get to your own projects because our customers take priority. That means we always put our own priorities low on the list,” Lori says.
FROM “SAD” TO SHOWSTOPPER The way Lori tells it, the exterior “before” of their home in Loveland was pretty sad.” Proof? Check that “before” pic. “Our home was built in 1989, as a ‘show’ home for the builder,” Lori describes. “It had one of
the largest floor plans in the neighborhood—but the way it was positioned on the lot, the way the front was originally designed, it looked more like a postage-stamp house … pink brick with orange undertones (and what looked like powdered sugar sprinkled on top), and windows with yellowish frames—not much in the way of curb appeal.” To make their house exterior stand out—and to make the house really live up to its full potential— they not only redid the outside, but some of the inside, as well. “Our vision was to improve the curb appeal and give the house the same presence in the front that it has in the back … bring it into the new millennium,” Lori explains. “We decided that we’ll be here for a long time, and we want to enjoy our home the way it could be while we’re here. RAISE THE ROOF (AND MORE) Employing Mark Dierkers of Mark Dierkers Architecture to plan the exterior updates, and tagging their daughter Adriana for design input, the Holmeses embarked on a nine-month renovation of the inside and out. So what does nine months of makeover look like? You have to read it to believe it. • Raising the roof (yes, raising it) in the front of the house to convert the attic to a more usable living space—enough to add another master closet, laundry room and bathroom, plus a large closet for the spare bedroom. The roughly 400-square-foot addition also gave the roofline more of a standout presence. • Reconfiguring two upstairs bedrooms and the hall bath, adding a brand-new Jack-and-Jill-style bathroom in between. • Incorporating a second floor HVAC room. • Adding a faux gable over the front center of the house (with James Hardie faux shake siding)—which, when combined with the bigger roofline, also gave the house a more substantial appearance from the street. • Moving and replacing two small windows in the garage that were spaced too far apart. The original window space was bricked in, then a large, triple-casement window was added in the center, along with a cedar and standing-seam metal roof awning. • Removing pillars on the front porch and spanning them out to open up the front, adding a window, and installing a James Hardie board-and-batten

treatment around the entry—giving the entire area a much more inviting appearance. Adding all-new black windows from Infinity Fiberglass Replacement Windows. Painting all of the existing brick white. Replacing the old vinyl siding with James Hardie arctic white siding. Adding a new black metal roof, black gutters and two skylights. Extending the side porch.
To help put together the pieces of their amazing home makeover, the Holmeses also worked with Lawn & Landscape Grooming LLC, ML Mantel Construction LLC, and Kennedy Painting.
THE END RESULT Despite the months-long remodeling process, and having to relocate to tight living quarters for the duration (aka, their library and main floor bathroom), Lori says both they (and their neighbors!) couldn’t be more thrilled. “We love when friends walk by and tell us they like the changes,” Lori smiles. “The neighbors across the street even asked me to let them know when workers would be there so that they could get out their lawn chairs and watch the progress. But when it comes to popularity, blinds and shades still come in first place. “People are adding softness to their windows with blinds and shades … moving away from the big, heavy drapery style,” Shaun says. “Of course, there are ebbs and flows with trends and how often they change—honeycomb blinds, for example, have been around for 30 years. And best of all, they still function the same way but now have a more modern, up-to-date look.” Recently, Shaun and the team installed a super-stylish yet highly functional set of window treatments inside one client’s master bedroom and stunning new master bath—showcasing the work that Window Accents can do as well as demonstrating the changes in current trends.

June is a great time to get out and grill. Here’s a delicious recipe perfect for your next backyard dinner.
STEAK WITH CHIMICHURRI SAUCE INGREDIENTS (MAKES 1 CUP OF SAUCE) • 1 cup (packed) fresh Italian parsley • 1/2 cup olive oil • 1/3 cup red wine vinegar • 1/4 cup (packed) fresh cilantro (optional) • 2 garlic cloves, peeled • 3/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon salt STEAK • 1 ½-2 pounds flank steak or steak of choice • Salt and pepper to taste PREPARATION 1. Make sauce: Puree all ingredients in food processor. Transfer to bowl. Can be made 2 hours ahead. Cover and let stand at room temperature. 2. Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Salt and pepper steak on both sides. 3. Sear steak for 6-8 minutes on each side until heavily browned on the outside and slightly pink in the middle. 4. Thinly slice steak across the grain and top with chimichurri sauce.
