LIFESTYLE LETTER

How Does She Do It?

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Emily Barlow | emily.barlow@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

This issue is full of local female business owners who are making a difference in our community—and I’m thrilled to feature them all. So, who will you be reading about in the following pages? I’m sure you noticed our delicious cover! Traci Talbott, owner of Delish In A Dish catering, has been creating feasts for your eyes (and your stomach, of course) since 2012. Not sure what to do about Mother’s Day brunch? Traci provided a list her favorite selections from her menu. So, you can place your order and be worry-free and happily content at the same time. Downtown Loveland has a new go-to shop—Debra Campbell, co-owner of Fleurish Home relocated her Loveland Madeira Rd boutique to the space right next to Graeter’s Ice Cream (where the Casual Pint used to be). So, what did she do with the bar that was originally there? She kept it and is revamping it. Read Fleurish in Full Bloom and get ready for future sip-and-shops. Dr. Lauren Capozza’s practice, Loveland Pediatric Dentistry, has been growing steadily since she opened her local office in 2020. When it comes to your kids’ teeth, she has some tips on how to keep their smiles healthy at any age. Read It’s All Smiles to make sure your kids are covering all their bases when it comes to brushing and flossing (I learned a thing or two, too). Speaking of health—sometimes the last person we focus on is ourselves (I’m raising my hand because I am completely guilty of this). When we do decide to get back on track, we don’t always know where to start (still raising my hand). Enter Emily Mobley, dietitian and weight-loss coach. She started Gray Nutrition so that her clients could get out of the diet rat race and find a nutrition and exercise solution that was customized, comfortable and effective. If you’ve been meaning to make a change, then you must read Feeling Great—then contact Emily ... she’ll get you on the right path for success and health. Each lady featured has the right mix of drive, ambition and vision—and that’s what makes her businesses or practice so successful and impactful. From food and health to work and play, if something struck your fancy in this issue, make sure to check it out. You won’t be disappointed.

No Reser vat ions Mother’s Day Brunch Made Easy with Delish In A Dish Catering

Although Traci Talbott, owner of Delish In A Dish, has business degrees in both restaurant/culinary arts and business, she found herself working in corporate sales for a company in Michigan out of school. During her 20-year sales career, she was transferred to Ohio. Then, a couple years later, she was asked to relocate again. But rather than pack up her belongings and switch cities one more time, she decided to put both degrees to work, and in 2012, created Delish In A Dish, a full-service catering business aiming to help busy families get from-scratch, fully cooked meals without buying fast food or spending money at a restaurant. Sounds perfect, right? Perfectly delicious ... especially for Mother’s Day. Although you can order from Delish In A Dish’s changing weekly menus any time, why not place an order for Mother’s Day brunch? That way, you’ll spend more time pampering mom and less time in the kitchen. For Traci, the perfect Mom’s Day brunch includes: 1. Amish Breakfast Casserole. This yummy dish features all the traditional breakfast ingredients in one classic casserole: eggs, three cheeses, bacon, potatoes. Plus, it warms up beautifully (and is oh-so satisfying). 2. French Toast Casserole. This overnight breakfast beauty starts with cubed French bread, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar, but you can order it prepared one of three ways—with praline topping, with blueberries and cream cheese, or with triple berry streusel. No matter the variety, the kitchen will smell divine, promising a scrumptious meal for mom. 3. Quiche. A savory, egg-based dish cooked in pastry shell like tarts or pies, Delish offers numerous quiche flavors, including chicken/spinach/feta and sundried tomatoes; ham and cheese; broccoli, bacon and chicken; spinach and three cheese to name a few. 4. Breakfast Strata. Puffy-and-light like a soufflé, stratas casseroles are made with a mix of bread, eggs, cheese, meat and/or vegetables. And Delish has the best. It all starts online—sign up for the Delish newsletter to get Traci’s weekly menus, then contact her to order (or talk about catering!). Your mom will thank you. DelishInADish.com

Emily’s clients eat like normal people. “They enjoy dessert with their family or a glass of wine with their girlfriends—and still get results.”

As someone looking for a sustainable way to shed a few pounds, I was genuinely excited to talk to Registered Dietitian Emily Mobley of Gray Nutrition. After our chat, I feel hope that there’s a peaceful middle ground where I can reach my goals without the guilt, shame and struggle. Are you interested? You should be, because this Gray story is great. Like so many of us, Emily heard a lot about dieting as a child. She absorbed constant chatter from women around her about diets and ways to maintain a perfect body. Family, friends, marketing, media ... all planted seeds that seemed to be absolute truths: Eating less is a win. Skipping meals is good. The less you eat, the better. The more exercise, the better. Emily got the messages loud and clear—and fully bought into them. Getting into a swimsuit with her junior high classmates to get in the pool was a defining moment. Emily recalls that’s when she really started to care about what her body looked like. Unfortunately, those self-conscious feelings, paired with everything she had heard, led her to start drinking weight-loss shakes as early as 8th grade. A struggle with chronic dieting was set in motion. Ongoing attempts to control her weight were frustrating—they never led to the lasting results she wanted. “I had a terrible relationship with food, with constantly fluctuating weight,” Emily remembers. “Worse, I felt like I couldn’t enjoy life like everyone around me—eating the food, drinking the wine, and truly living in the moment.” Emily eventually hit her breaking point and realized she needed to make a change. “Long story short, this led me on a path to transform my health by learning how nutrition, body composition and metabolism work. I went to school for Medical Dietetics …

decided to make it my life’s mission to help other women break free from the crash diet mentality—and Gray Nutrition was born. Now I teach women how to transform their meals, metabolism and mindset the right way so they never have to invest in another diet program again.” No more diets? I told you this was great. Through her business, Emily has been able to help women from all over the country through one-on-one virtual coaching and her signature course. “Over the last six years, I’ve been able to help thousands of women get out of that perpetual diet cycle

by transforming their meals, metabolism and mindset. I get to not only allow them to feel their best self with my Gray Method— but they get their life back.”

WHAT’S SO DIFFERENT ABOUT THE GRAY METHOD? I’m glad you asked. Emily’s program provides a customized plan that flexes around real life and emphasizes balance over restriction. “There’s not that fear of messing up. I empower women to make better choices based on science,” she says. “They learn the reasons behind what

they’re doing. I provide simple strategies that keep them consistent.” Emily points out that her clients eat like normal people. “They enjoy dessert with their family or a glass of wine with their girlfriends—and still get results.” The Gray Method doesn’t force lifestyles to fit a diet and exercise plan. Instead, by educating her clients and working with their lifestyles to come up with a strategy, Emily watches the lightbulbs come on. “When they learn how to balance their eating around their own real-life scenarios, that’s when they see sustainable, long-term results.”

PROTEIN: YOUR NEW BFF

“Eat protein at each meal and snack time. You’ll be shocked by your energy. Greek yogurt, chicken, fish, cottage cheese, and dry-roasted edamame are all good. Eggs, too.”

You’ll work with Emily for 12 weeks, getting personalized one-on-one support. You’ll find what she calls your “Gray area,” figure out what works for your lifestyle, and together you’ll formulate a plan tailored to you. Daily text messaging with Emily keeps you on track and helps you figure out how to structure your days. She’ll meet you wherever you are and figure out your next step. The most common feedback she gets? “This is so much easier than I thought it would be! It’s not so restrictive and stressful.”

What to Expect • • • • •

Know exactly how to move the needle for results Know how to eat to get energy and mitigate cravings Feel satisfied after mealtime vs starving Have a better relationship with food Know how to navigate vacations, parties, date nights—still eating “fun” food while seeing results • No longer live by the scale because you know how metabolism and body composition actually work • Get a solid nutrition plan that fits YOUR lifestyle

The Gray30 Course

BALANCE YOUR WEEK “Treat your week the same as your weekend! Learn how to fit ‘fun’ foods in during the week—have the glass of wine on Tuesday, eat that cookie on Wednesday …”

For those ready to take more of a DIY approach, Emily’s course will teach you to build a foundation for healthy habits. You’ll get the basics to put you on a path to reach your goals.

Put simply, this business has blossomed. Since relocating their Loveland Madeira Rd store to the former Casual Pint location in historic Loveland, Fleurish owners Debra and Doug Campbell have loved being in “the heart of it all.” If you’ve never been to Fleurish, don’t worry—you’ll be obsessed soon. What originally began as a paint-based biz for Debra has grown into one of the hottest destinations for distinctive gifts, home decor, clothing, kitchenware, pet products, children’s toys, themed-items, jewelry, accessories and more. “Prior to opening this store, I ran my own paint-contracting business,” says Debra, whose background is fashion merchandising. “I taught people how to paint furniture, and had a studio for a handful of years as a side business to my faux-finishing work.” “In 2010, I learned about a line of furniture paint that I started selling—and the demand for that really grew,” Debra explains. “Then people started to ask, ‘What else do you have?’ so we opened the first Fleurish store in Springboro in 2013.” That same year, Doug left his job to help build that store—then their Loveland Madeira location opened in 2015, plus another in Hamilton in 2017. “We started as a pure home decor store to complement our paint products—but our customers kept telling us we were a great place to get gifts, so we would add more and more items,” Debra recalls. It wasn’t long before the couple realized their true mission: to spread joy and happiness.

“The name ‘Fleurish’ comes from wanting our customers to ‘flourish’ … one of the things that came out of the pandemic is that people have really started to realize that just existing isn’t enough—that it’s those positive, little things that make you happy, that help you exist to make a full life,” Debra smiles. “So considering our goal, we’ve become a full lifestyle store with a little bit of everything.” “I hunt everywhere—I go to a lot of wholesale markets but also look for small companies and independent designers. We try to find a balance of really unique items.” Occupying a former taproom location has not been without its perks— Fleurish has a beer and wine license, and plans to serve adult beverages including local craft brews alongside sodas, teas and small bites. The store’s inside can seat 30 guests while another 20 can relax out on the patio. This lounge side of Fleurish should open later this spring, as construction is almost complete, with tables and chairs arriving daily—plus, art tutorials are in the works for fall. “With our move to Loveland, we’re becoming not just a store but a gathering space as well,” Debra says. “A lot of customers tell us we’re their ‘happy place’ ... so being a place where people can come hang out, have a glass of wine with friends, host a baby shower or just enjoy each other’s company? That’s exciting.” FleurishHome.com 110 S 2nd St, Loveland

IT’S ALL SMILES TAKING DENTAL CARE PERSONALLY—FROM TODDLERS TO TEENS AND BEYOND ARTICLE BY BILL FURBEE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J CAPPS BUSINESS IMAGE SERVICES

Loveland Pediatric Dentistry’s a very busy place—one Dr. Lauren Capozza is proud of, along with her growing reputation. “Loveland itself is a vibrant community, and we realized that many young families were looking for dental care closer to home,” she notes. “Word about our practice spread quickly—and so did a better understanding of the value of specialized pediatric care.” That specialized care includes adventure-themed decor, which includes many of Loveland’s most popular outdoor activities (kayaking, hiking, biking). Also popular—and remarkably unique—a special sensory room that offers a calm, inviting nontraditional dental visit experience to very young children or those with special needs.

“We were also the first in the area to offer a prize wall kids can see as they enter, to motivate them through an appointment!” Dr. Lauren adds. She’s proud of the attention her practice provides to those who are developing their own dental health. Of course, few things are more valuable than a bright smile, and proper dental care begins at a young age. “Teeth are important for eating, speaking, and social interactions—including smiling!” she reminds us. “Many underestimate the importance of their teeth until a problem comes up. Often with simple preventative maintenance, painful and costly problems can be avoided.”

STARTING CARE: BABIES For any teeth that are touching, “Floss daily!” Dr. Lauren says, starting as soon as those teeth come in.

all talk It’s a good idea to discuss dental visits and hygiene with your kids, so they learn the value of good oral health care (and won’t be afraid of seeing the dentist!).

“This is a common time for orthodontics,” Dr. Lauren notes, which can make routine tasks like brushing and flossing much harder. “Consider taking your child in for an extra cleaning if he or she has a hard time at home—ask about adding prescription fluoride products. Not taking good care of teeth around braces can cause unsightly white scarring or decay around the brackets.”

FINISHING UP: TEENAGERS Obviously, teens are independent when it comes to dietary choices, so it’s especially important to make sure they have healthy options (and established practices) at home. “Neglecting self care, sudden tooth decay or erosion—those can be symptoms of mental health issues or substance abuse disorders.” So even though your kiddos are self-reliant? It’s still important to pay attention to their teeth.
