Traditionally, April’s magazine has been our eco issue ... but this year, we decided to add a sub-theme: “explore.” When I was mulling over teaser options for the cover, I wanted to come up with something that embodied both themes—and “A Fresh Start” seemed like a good fit. So, let’s start exploring what’s fresh in this issue. Branch Hill Coffee Co. has new owners, Joey Burns and Kaylee Bennett, and they have some big plans for this beloved staple. Regulars, do not stress—they will still be serving delicious Seven Hills Coffee Roasters’ beverages, but are adding fresh salads and homemade baked goods to the menu. Haven’t been in a little while? Ever wanted to see birds of prey up close—talons and all? RAPTOR Inc. has started their Open Houses for 2022! Educators will be on-site to lead tours and educational programs with these fierce “avian ambassadors.” Visitors can learn about birds of prey native to our area, and experience them in action. Donations always appreciated, but these events are free and fun for the whole family. 1–4 p.m. the last Sunday of every month through November.

The LMRCA is excited to welcome its newest employee, Loveland native Lacey Sullivan, who will be serving as the Chamber’s Events Specialist. Lacey joined the Marine Corps in 2000 and traveled the world as a Marine musician, climbing the ranks while also teaching music theory, and coordinating military weddings and events. “My husband, Christian, and I have two amazing girls,” Lacey says. “We’re a proud Tiger family looking forward to being part of this community!”

Loveland Schools educators discussed “Portrait of a Tiger” at their recent Community Input Sessions, sharing what will be the district’s Strategic Vision plan. A list of aspirations for students was created with community input in 2018/19, and the “Portrait” has been revisited and refined since. “Together, we’ll build a shared vision of success for our students and lay out the action plan to get us there,” says Superintendent Mike Broadwater. In recent years, promising new possibilities have emerged in cancer treatment—providing new hope and opportunities for healing. But choosing the best next steps requires both a caring and supportive medical team—and access to the best treatments available. Thankfully, at the Jewish Hospital – Mercy Health Cincinnati Cancer and Cellular Therapy Center (3CTC), choosing and pursuing cancer treatment is personalized. Their staff align each treatment plan toward protecting the patient and improving outcomes every step of the way. Diane Shapiro, RN and Transplant Coordinator, has worked with the Jewish Hospital Cancer Center for more than 27 years. “I love the team approach we have,” she says. “It’s not just doctors—we have an amazing group that includes nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, as well as a dietitian, social worker and psychologist. It truly takes a village for a successful outcome for patients and their families.” There’s more. The first chimeric antigen receptor T cell immunotherapy (CAR-T) was approved as a treatment for leukemia in 2017, and since then, CAR-T protocols have been approved for some types of lymphoma and multiple myeloma. “As soon as we heard about CAR-T, even when it was still in clinical trials, we thought it was important for our patients to have access to this potentially life-saving therapy,” says Dr. James Essell, medical director of 3CTC. “We’re the first in the region to have this for adults.”

WHAT IS CAR-T THERAPY? CAR-T begins with collecting lymphocyte cells called T cells from the patient. These cells are genetically modified in a lab to specifically attack the cancer. The cells are grown in the lab, and they are then infused back into the patient’s blood. The modified T cells attach to the malignant cancer cells and kill them. CAR-T continues to multiply and expand in the body to fight the cancer. Dr. Essell explains that CAR-T is a targeted form of cancer treatment called cellular therapy, which helps the body to attack cancer itself, rather than having chemotherapy or radiation doing the primary cancer-fighting work.

CAR-T immunotherapy is currently only considered in candidates whose cancer has not gone into remission during two or more previous chemotherapy attempts. Many of these patients would previously have had few, if any, options for continuing treatment effectively. While research is ongoing, at least one study shows more than a third of cancer cases going into long-term remission after the treatment. Dr. Essell has reason to believe that cured patient percentages will rise even further due to continued innovation in the world of cellular therapy.

Multiple CAR-T therapies have been approved by the FDA—early successes have prompted many new trials to provide CAR-T for other cancer types, since each treatment is specific to the particular kind of cancer. 3CTC is part of that ongoing innovation in cancer care, opening a new patient infusion center in April 2022 that will allow them to expand their capacity and do even more in the fight against highly resistant cancers.

FROM THE EYES OF A PATIENT One Mason resident and CAR-T patient at 3CTC has brought his unshakable faith with him during a difficult lymphoma journey. Even on his toughest days, Gordon Massa lends inspiration to both 3CTC staff and patients with his powerful spirituality and encouragement of others. After multiple unsuccessful chemotherapy rounds, Gordon was referred by his local oncologist to the team at the Jewish Hospital. Through the intake and evaluation process, he became a candidate for CAR-T treatment. While a challenge of CAR-T can be its potential side effects— which often necessitate consistent monitoring and care—the

medical team and Gordon’s family created a network of care around him for those crucial first few weeks. “Our family, our village, wanted to help any way they could … we were very grateful. Getting this treatment only 15-20 minutes away from home made it all possible,” says Gordon. “Everyone has been helpful through this process. Diane’s attitude was positive and encouraging, and she calmed the waters several times.” Gordon’s wife, Lianne, became his main caregiver during CAR-T treatment. “All the nurses and doctors have been amazing,” she adds. “They all bring something to the table.” At his 60-day PET/CT scans, Gordon’s cancer was found to be in remission. Gordon and other patients like him know that having teammates on your side during tough times is essential for persevering and trusting the treatment process. Mostly, the act of writing demands physical solitude. Writing and rewriting alone in front of a computer, the only sound the tap-taptapping of fingers on the keyboard (or, perhaps, the tap-tap-tapping of the table when the writer’s block strikes). But for local author Jessica Strawser, it is in the aloneness that she’s able to craft whole worlds of fictional characters—bringing to life seemingly ordinary women and men, and weaving them intricately, masterfully, into stories that question what you know (and what you think you know) about those closest to you. With both a brand-new novel and recent paperback release, Jessica graciously offered us a little sneak peek into her progression and process.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO WRITE FICTION? A: For me, there’s a huge difference between vaguely wanting to write fiction and seriously pursuing it. The serious part didn’t come until I’d worked my way up to editorial director at Writer’s Digest, where I’d spend all day editing articles about the craft of writing and interviewing authors. I’ve always been a voracious reader— and anyone who loves fiction as much as I do wouldn’t last long in that job without deciding to give it an honest go. Q: INSPIRATION FOR YOUR CHARACTERS— COMES FROM WHERE? A: I visit with a lot of book clubs and this is always the number one question once the wine gets flowing … which is exactly why it would make me nervous to ever base my characters on real people. I think all writers leave traces of their own heart behind, whether they mean to or not. But by and large, the fun is in dreaming them up. Q: YOUR SECRET FOR STAYING MOTIVATED? A: When I have a manuscript in progress, I live by daily and weekly word count goals. I’m a big believer in forward momentum. Having started as a journalist, I’m very driven by deadlines.

Q: AND LOVELAND? HOW YOU ENDED UP HERE, WHAT YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT IT … A: I’ve lived in the area ever since graduating from Ohio University in 2001, but didn’t move to Loveland until 2014. Back then, we’d drive out to Loveland as a special treat for bike rides and a meal on The Works’ patio, long before many of our favorite businesses today existed. I love the natural beauty, the friendly faces and the combination of the historic and the new-and-improved. Jessica Strawser is editor-at-large for Writer’s Digest and the author of five novels, including her most recent, The Next Thing You Know, released in March. She has written for The New York Times’ Modern Love, Publishers Weekly and others, and is a popular speaker at writing conferences. She lives locally with her husband and two children. Buzz-worthy Brew and Community, Too Branch Hill Coffee Co. After graduating from Miami University last year, Joey bought Branch Hill Coffee Co.—on his 24th birthday, no less—and is proud to now oversee operations for this long-time community mainstay alongside his co-owner, Kaylee Bennett, who can take full credit for the shop’s redesign and outdoor plans. “It had always been my dream to own a restaurant,” he says. So, when a chance to purchase Branch Hill Coffee came up, gears started turning. Just a few steps from the Little Miami River and Scenic Trail, it was a

perfect fit. “A couple months later,” Joey says, “I was signing the contract.” If that sounds too-good-to-true for a recent grad, Joey’s backstory includes a lion’s share of hard work, smart investments and even smarter savings. “My dad always stressed that if a person had the opportunity to really make something, it will be the most rewarding opportunity of your life—now I’m following in his footsteps.” Joey adds that dedicated patrons have already provided a great deal of support and wishes for success. “I’m still young and have a lot to learn

about the business,” he admits, pointing out Branch Hill’s previous owners, Tom and Andrea of The European Cafe. “Their guidance has been invaluable, along with Kaylee’s ideas—we’re all in this together. Everyone was happy that Branch Hill Coffee would have a new life.” Joey’s fresh perspective on business ownership, combined with his passion for healthy food and ingredients, quickly translated to a reenergized menu at Branch Hill Coffee Co. The shop specializes, of course, in fresh cups of heavenly, warm, caffeinated goodness—and that won’t change. Those organic beans are sourced from Cincinnati’s Seven Hills Coffee Roasters, which roasts its product to perfection— even developing an exclusive Branch Hill house blend. Branch Hill also offers customers a dark roast, a Highlander grog, and a decadent toasted marshmallow roast daily, while rotating two other flavored coffees on a weekly basis. Joey proudly details a recent tour of Seven Hills’ roasting facility, to witness firsthand their state-of-the-art roaster and an inventory of beans from all over the world. “They explained the complexity of oils in the beans, and how different roasting methods, temperatures and time can produce different characteristics in the coffee.” Even better? Seven Hills also offered training to ensure that Branch Hill employees were experts at producing perfect espresso-based drinks. But that’s not all—Branch Hill’s food menu has been re-energized, as well. Now, patrons can enjoy an even healthier selection of meals and on-the-go snacks. “I’m passionate about healthy eating and nutrition,” Joey says, “and I always wanted to share that passion …it’s food, as nature intended!” Meats and cheeses are supplied by well-known specialist Boar’s Head, and a number of irresistible treats are prepared and baked in-house, from scratch. There’s more—Branch Hill’s bakery selection is being expanded to include vegan and gluten-free alternatives, and local microgreen provider Queen City Sprouts provides a nutrient-packed crunch to many items on the menu. Bonus: all menu items are available for dine-in or patio service, at a drive-up or walk-up window and as catering, too.

Beans to go? Branch Hill’s got you covered there, as well. If you ask Joey, it all comes back to recognizing a new responsibility on his shoulders—to usher in a new era for Branch Hill Coffee Co., and to enable his friends and neighbors to thrive. “We brightened the place up … with new floors, new furniture, books—there’s a vintage kind of vibe now,” Joey says, pointing out that many visitors even take pictures of the decor to share. Coming this spring, you’ll also see changes to the outside of the building as Kaylee plans to add a community garden.
