LIFESTYLE LETTER

Switching It Up

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Emily Barlow | emily.barlow@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR

New year! New cover layout? Yes, we decided to make a little change on the outside. Glad you noticed. But wait! We also made some changes on the inside, too. As you flip through these pages, you’ll see that a few sections look a little different (I’ll walk you through it, don’t worry). But the most important thing is that our dedication to you, dear readers, hasn’t changed one bit. We’ll still bring you the latest news/stories about the fantastic people, businesses and organizations that shape our lovely community. So, what exactly has changed? Well, let’s dive into that. First, you might notice that this page has a bold new look. We revamped the publisher letter—I have to say I quite like it. Next, the Table of Contents got a face-lift—and if you flip to the back, our Calendar of Events did, too. Now, there are some sections that are completely different, so let me break those down. Good Times has now morphed into City Scene. Before, we could feature multiple photos for one event, but we were limited to only featuring 1–3 events per issue. Now, we will feature one photo per event, plus links to social media pages. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Loveland has a lot of amazing events, so I’m excited to highlight more of them in each issue. Also, our Around Town is now Business Monthly—this section will focus on news related to helping businesses grow ... but don’t worry, we’ll make sure to still spread the word about non-business-related topics in other areas of the magazine. January is a month of change, so I can’t think of a better time to introduce you to our new look. As our town grows and evolves, we just want to make sure we’re keeping up. We hope you like what you see so far—it’s going to be a good year!

CINCINNATI’S PREMIER EXTERIOR REMODELER

The Tale of the Rude Sales Rep TRUE STORY. A young couple recently contacted us about replacing their windows—right after they had a three (yes, three) hour meeting with a competing window company (the sales rep refused to leave). Tired and fed up with the sales rep’s high-pressure tactics, they decided to call us.

Lucky for them, we don’t believe in high-pressure. We respect our clients’ time, budget and needs. We also educate our clients, so they are comfortable and confident in their decisions. Our team doesn’t push a one-size-fits-all product, but instead takes the time to listen, so we find the perfect fit for each client. So, if you’re looking for a window company that is a breath of fresh air … we might just be your perfect fit! Give us call.

Distilling It Down in Milford Spring means the opening of Cincinnati Distilling in Milford’s Millcroft. Linked to Cincy’s powerhouses from the 1800-1900s, the site was set to become townhomes in 2018—local objections inspired Cincinnati Distilling to purchase the property, pledging to preserve the historic house and stable, while building a distillery, restaurant, museum, event space and rooftop bar. Two historic properties, connected by heritage and tradition, will bring both Nation Kitchen & Bar and the brand-new distillery to life.

No-Bake

ENERGY SHO T S YEP, THESE ARE PRETTY MUCH THE PERFECT SNACK

ARTICLE BY EMILY BARLOW I first saw these little bundles of goodness at Balance Café—and after consuming one was pleasantly surprised to find I wasn’t reaching for another snack hours later. Energy shots combine just the right amount of protein, good carbs and healthy fats—and they’re high in fiber. Best of all, they are extremely easy to make. I tried out a few recipes, and this one is easy and a new favorite (probably because it’s easy). Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup old-fashioned oats • ½ cup peanut butter • ½ cup ground flaxseed • ½ cup dark chocolate chips • 1/3 cup honey • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS 1. Combine oats, peanut butter, ground flaxseed, chocolate chips, honey and vanilla together in a bowl until well blended. 2. Cover and chill the dough in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. 3. Remove dough from refrigerator and scoop or roll into balls—about 1 inch in diameter. 4. If you prefer bars, press the dough into a parchment-lined baking sheet and cut into bars. 5. Wrap individually and store in an airtight container up to 2 months in the fridge.

What are the first words that pop into your head when you hear “assisted living”? Old, cramped, stuffy, boring, melancholy, stale ... or other adjectives that aren’t usually associated with anything good? For many assisted living facilities, those words are appropriate descriptors. But take one step inside the spacious entry at Magnolia Springs Assisted Living and Memory Care in Loveland, and those words go right out the window— instead replaced with roomy, cheerful, happy, lively, spirited, vibrant, exciting. In fact, Magnolia Springs not only changes the way you’d think about assisted living homes, but goes above and beyond, to celebrate life—a philosophy that rules over everything they do. Still skeptical? Perhaps this will help—here’s more about Magnolia Springs and the way they not only take care of their senior residents, but how they give back to this community as well.

SEVEN FACILITIES AND 12 YEARS AGO … More than 12 years ago, Magnolia Springs’s founding family went in search of a senior living facility for a family member— and came up empty-handed. Instead of settling, they created their own setting to meet their needs and the needs of future residents, explains Debby Farmer, Magnolia’s director of community relations. After building their first facility in Louisville, the founders went on to add six additional communities—another in Louisville, two in Indianapolis, and one each in Lexington, Florence and Loveland. Debby says that one of the most important features you’ll find at every Magnolia Springs is a sense of community. “A philosophy of celebration rules everything we do. We celebrate our residents and help them live each day with a purpose—while supplying a safety net of support.”

To that end, the facility provides around-the-clock nursing and caregiving, plus three chef-prepared meals a day and weekly housekeeping. In addition, they’re committed to offering a holistic approach to total health and wellness, working to ensure overall physical, psychological and social well-being.

CELEBRATE LIFE WHILE LIVING THE LIFE YOU LOVE (SAFELY) Debby says that choosing Loveland for one of their facilities was so appropriate when you consider their motto: “live the life you love.” But, she points out, in addition to their central location close to I-275 and many other Greater Cincinnati attractions, it’s the assisted living home itself that really makes it stand out from the pack. “We have so much common space in our community—there are very large and bright hallways, lots of living rooms, a country kitchen, sun porches and a 50s diner just to name a few special features.” However, even with the ample living space, ensuring the wellness and safety of every Magnolia Springs resident and employee during the past couple of years wasn’t without its challenges. Debby went on to describe how their executive director, Katie Huff, did a fantastic job at keeping everyone safe, providing direction and working with their management company’s policies—as well as the CDC and State of Ohio—to remain compliant during COVID. “We learned to pivot,” Debby says. “At the onset, we had to have residents remain in their apartments—so we were very creative in providing activities. We offered exercise at your door and a mobile happy hour cart. Our management company also implemented a huge initiative called Eversafe 360—where expanded cleaning efforts and installing an air purifying system were just a few of the components added by Life Care Services.” Another important safety component has been the communication to families and residents about the constant changes CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . “We simply have a responsibility to give back,” Debby says. “I can’t wait to get back to more when our doors open to the public again!” in policies, especially those for visitations. “We’ve implemented mandatory vaccinations, and are still doing weekly testing of our team members,” Debby says. “While this has been a very challenging time, we’ve also bonded more ... our families have been so supportive.”

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS GIVES BACK As large as the Magnolia Springs community is, they always want to feel part of the even larger community outside their doors. To achieve this, they work at giving back whenever they can. Pre-pandemic, the facility frequently opened its doors to different agencies in the community as a great meeting space.

Magnolia Springs has also hosted several professional organizations, offered educational events, been involved in area chambers of commerce, and held several fundraisers throughout the years to support the Alzheimer’s Association. “We simply have a responsibility to give back,” Debby says. “I can’t wait to get back to more when our doors open to the public again!” MSLoveland.com 767 Loveland Miamiville Rd, Loveland 513.774.9000

Loveland Residents Bring a New Family-Friendly Destination to the Queen City F E AT U R E | EN CATEG TERTA ORY INM E NT

One might claim that Greater Cincinnati has a history of supporting new sports and recreation on the cusp of taking off—after all, the Cincinnati Red Stockings became America’s first professional baseball club in 1869, the card game UNO was invented here in 1971, and the American Cornhole Organization (headquartered in Milford) was formed in 2005. Now, a handful of Loveland natives are ready to add “fowling” to that esteemed list. Just two short years ago, Joe Frank and his fellow co-owners—Kevin Gleason, Scot Filgis and Ryan Watt (all proud Loveland residents)—opened Fowling Warehouse with fellow co-owner Tim Sontag. Today, they welcome about 3–5 thousand patrons each month. “The biggest question we get is how to pronounce the name,” Joe acknowledges with a laugh. A soft “o” is apropos—he describes the sport as a mash-up of bowling and football. At Fowling Warehouse, lanes are set up similar to those in cornhole-type games, but distanced 48 feet apart with each side supporting a set of traditional bowling pins. Up to five players (Fowlers) on each side alternate tossing a regulation-size football toward the pins, attempting to knock them over before their opponents do. “It’s simple!” Joe says. “We like to say it’s a ‘don’t-have-to-think-just-drink’ kind of a game.” It’s a passion for casual pastime that came to life in his own backyard. “When I first moved to Loveland, my neighbor [Kevin, now a Fowling co-owner] was telling me about Chris Hutt—a buddy in Detroit—who had come up with this new game while tailgating at the Indy 500,” Joe says. “It sounded like fun! So, we built two sets and started playing it ourselves on Friday nights.” It wasn’t long before they were attracting a crowd. “People would see us as they walked through the neighborhood … the next thing we knew, there was a small group showing up to join us every weekend,” Joe reports.

“We’re proud to help out by hosting fundraisers for charities and schools,” Joe says. “We even have a term for it … ‘fowlanthropy’!”

Fowling Party in Joe’s Backyard

That growing group would eventually organize DIY tournaments for more than 50 different players (again, all in their own backyard), with kegs of frothy beer and a live band on deck. The fast attraction they noticed toward the game convinced Joe and Kevin to visit Detroit, where game founder Chris had just opened the first Fowling Warehouse. That trip sealed the deal—the rest, as they say, is history. “It’s a combination of beer pong, a little bit of horseshoes, with some cornhole rules … we thought it was just perfect for Cincinnati,” Joe says. They soon after purchased the first Fowling franchise in 2019. Today, there are five locations across the Midwest, with more in the works.

Owners of Fowling Warehouse Cincinnati

“It’s kind of cool how this started out for us, playing the game in our backyard,” Joe admits. “And now, it’s a business.” But Fowling Warehouse Cincinnati has become so much more than just a business—they’ve already helped local school districts and other groups raise up to $100,000 in a single night. “We’re proud to help out by hosting fundraisers for charities and schools,” Joe says. “We even have a term for it … ‘fowlanthropy’! It’s a big part of our culture, to provide that atmosphere … where it’s easy to throw an event while having a good time.” He recalls an especially successful event raising funds for Ohio Valley Voices, a Loveland school empowering children

who are deaf or hard of hearing to learn to speak. The turnout was so great that his team even moved fowling lanes to accommodate their University of Cincinnati DAAP-curated fashion show. Aside from everyday fun and benefit events (and most recently, a craft beer and spirits fest), there’s also trivia nights and family-focused hours to add to Fowling’s appeal. The space, which can host over 350 players at any given time, offers a fully stocked bar and—if your party’s big enough—full facility rental is even available. “We have 30 lanes, and they fill up fast,” Joe notes. About half are usually reserved in advance, while the others are open game for walk-in patrons.

From its humble beginnings in an Indy 500 parking lot to its accumulating fandom in a Loveland backyard— and forward to plans for expansion beyond the Midwest—Joe says he and his co-owners are thrilled to see their favorite new game thriving not far from where they first took it up. Tucked away between Pleasant Ridge and Oakley, the Warehouse is only a short drive from Loveland—and trust us, it’s worth the ride. “Loveland is our number one patron demographic,” Joe says, laughing and beaming with pride. “We’re not entirely certain why, but we still think it’s pretty cool.” Fowl on, Loveland. WHAT WAS ONCE THE SWEET SPOT FOR SUPER-POWERED CYCLING HAS BECOME A DESTINATION FOR FULL-BODY WORKOUTS IN A STUNNING VARIETY.

CYCLING TO CIRCUIT, IN-STUDIO TO ONLINE—THESE LOCALS HAVE TAKEN FITNESS TO THE NEXT (ALL-ABILITIES) LEVEL

I met Casey and Meg Hilmer in December of 2018—shining a light on their charity fundraising “rydes,” sharing more about the super-close-knit community of riders (ryders) who’d been cycling with them since Power Ryde’s 2013 beginnings. It took me until the following summer to give their RealRyder bikes a spin—those babies shake, tilt and move unlike anything I’d ever experienced, and according to Meg, burn up to 30% more calories than their stationary siblings. A better workout for core and lateral muscles; easier on hips, knees, ankles and backs. Add in the crazy cadre of instructors, personalities and music—I was hooked from the start. But since my first ryde mid-2019, a lot has changed—Casey is now Mrs. Ward and mama to baby girl Wren; Meg is proud grandma to this first grandbaby. The studio itself has doubled in size, adding dedicated space for TRX straps, BOSU balls, weights, personal training and more. And that’s just scratching the surface—what was once the sweet spot for super-powered cycling has become a destination (both virtual and in-person) for full-body workouts in a stunning variety. Fitness for any age, and any ability. “When we first opened, I wanted to show people how intense everything was, how it was such a good workout,” Casey shares. “But it’s really showing people that this is for everybody—for all levels. Our average clientele is late 30s to mid-50s.” It started simple—daily rydes, various instructors, with Casey adding “off the bike” strength-only classes about four years ago. Then came the pandemic. “Within the first week of being shut down, people were saying, ‘you need to get on Facebook and do off-the-bike workouts.’ And I was like, everyone is doing free workouts right now—why would anyone follow me?” Casey laughs. “I started going live every day—and people kept tuning in.” Two months in, the mother-daughter duo followed the new status quo—they pivoted: renting out their bikes (an impressive logistics dance involving a masked Casey and crew hand-delivering the 200+lb bikes in a U-Haul). Then they began streaming both rydes and Casey’s strength workouts for a monthly fee—building what would become a deep and varied online exercise library. Fast-forward—that virtual pandemic-driven class collection is now a pair of present-day online-only options: cycle or workout. Virtual cycling is straightforward—$49.99/mo to either join live classes from home or access 2 months’ worth of recordings, updated daily (with bikes still available to rent). Casey’s online workouts became On Demand Classes—and there’s a lot to choose from for just $19.99/mo. At 100+ videos strong, with new ones added weekly, the digital library offers

options from 10 to 60 minutes for Sweat (intervals of plyometrics and strength), Build (strength only, for set time) and Burn (flow with weights, balls and bands), plus Stretching and Treadmill classes. In-person studio workouts? More there, too— try TRX (core-engaging, total-body workout) and Circuit (lower-intensity, interval-based rotations of work/rest). Or, true to form, reserve a bike and come for a ryde—unlimited in-studio passes are $140/mo (multi-class and drop-in options also available). Still second-guessing that crazy bike? Consider this: a few local XC and LAX high school teams have been cross-training here—for one team, a trip to State followed. And those online workouts? Meg reports seeing people tune in from Columbus to New York to Switzerland. “There’s so much more than just cycling now— and anybody can do any of these classes,” Casey reiterates. “It’s about having fun—and moving your body.” Fitness and fun? Sign me up (again).

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition

The Cold Plunge

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

T R E N D SE T T E R | FITN ESS

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

WORK IT, MOVE IT, BOOK IT THREE LOCAL FITNESS EXPERTS, THREE MUST-READ FAVES ARTICLE BY JILL CLARK

The Joy of Movement

The Daniel Plan

ROAR

By: Kelly McGonigal, PHD

By: Rick Warren

By: Stacy T. Sims, PHD

If exercise seems like a chore, The Joy of Movement may change your perspective. Kelly McGonigal, PhD, uses science and storytelling to show how movement should be a source of joy—and why it’s such a powerful mental wellness tool. The book inspired Suzanne Breckenridge just after opening her barre3 studio. “It reinforced that our studio really is important in the community,” she says. “Moving to music with a group brings a sense of collective joy and belonging—McGonigal calls it the ‘Synchrony Effect.’” The Joy of Movement encourages readers to harness the power of movement to create happiness, meaning—and connection.

Founded on faith-based principals, The Daniel Plan by Rick Warren outlines a healthy lifestyle program that employs gradual changes for transformation. Three internationally known doctors developed the plan, which emphasizes abundance over deprivation. The book is a favorite of D1 Training Cincy North’s Chris Witzgall, who shares that it had a major impact on him. “What I love about it is the five essentials—faith, food, fitness, focus and friends.” Incorporating faith and friends means motivation comes from a deeper place, providing a foundation for sustainable change. The Daniel Plan removes the guilt, encouraging readers to take single steps in the right direction.

Empowering women? That’s ROAR— helping women use their female physiology and biochemistry to their advantage for optimum fitness. Exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist Stacy T. Sims, PhD, provides the roadmap—diving into the nutrition, hydration and training needs unique to women. BJ Smith of RockBox Fitness read it to better understand the needs of his gym’s members. Calling it an eye-opener, he says, “Kickboxing is especially popular with women—and ROAR has helped me provide better recommendations for them.” Hormones, cycles, pregnancy and menopause impact athletic performance, and ROAR takes it all into account—providing a fitness and nutrition guide tailored to female athletes.
