Getting in the Holiday Mood

I recently came across a social media post that raised the question, “When is the right time to put up your Christmas tree and decorate?” Many said the first week of December, while some favored decking the halls the day after Halloween ... just a handful said Christmas Eve. So, when is it appropriate to get in the holiday mood? The funny thing is, I have had Christmas on the brain all October long. Since we work so far out on our story content, I was selecting the right wreath cover image the same week I shopped for Halloween costumes for my kids. Though the holidays have been top of mind for months, I still get excited each time I look over everything in this issue. Whether it’s learning to tie the perfect bow (I am so excited that I know how to do this now!) or preparing a show-stopping charcuterie board for a friend’s holiday soirée—I will be referencing this issue for Decembers to come. Hopefully you’ll feel the same way. You can take a break from putting up your Christmas tree (unless you are one of the November 1st people) and read an article or two. Walking into GiGi’s Playhouse Cincinnati is more than just walking into another nonprofit—it’s opening up a door to a whole new world, a place where everyone is welcome. As soon as you enter the Playhouse, it’s impossible not to notice the joy and love infused into every little detail. From bright colors bound to bring a smile to every child’s face, to each mindfully created space, GiGi’s Playhouse Cincinnati has created a warm, safe environment for all of its individuals. Established more than 20 years ago by founder Nancy Gianni, GiGi’s Playhouse is a network of Down syndrome achievement centers dedicated to changing the way the world thinks about Down syndrome, creating acceptance for all, and providing life-changing, free programming for individuals living with Down syndrome. “Twenty years ago there weren’t as many resources for those with living with this condition,” team member and board secretary Ann Poirier points out. In fact, back when Nancy’s own daughter GiGi was diagnosed with Down syndrome, the family wondered why there weren’t more places for families and people impacted by it. CONTINUED >

Now, with its grand opening back in late September, the brand-new GiGi’s Playhouse Cincinnati is the 56th Playhouse to open in the United States, with programming available virtually in 80 countries. And it’s right here in Loveland. “We didn’t feel like there were many resources in this area, and we also felt like Loveland was central to a lot of local people who have a child with Down syndrome,” Ann says. With an estimated 3,000 people living with Down syndrome throughout Cincinnati, the Playhouse is a welcome addition to the community. “We have four programs right now—currently one for each age group,” says site manager Elizabeth Hardesty. From early learners all the way up to adults, each class is designed to teach important skills and build confidence in a community setting. “In the next few months,” Elizabeth adds, “as we get more volunteers and get the word out, we’re hoping to start adding more in-person programs—right now we offer a lot of virtual programming.” So if you can’t make it to the Playhouse but still want the enrichment and instruction, it’s available. And all of these programs and classes? They’re free.

This center is 99% volunteer-run, allowing these amazing education opportunities to be offered at no charge for the entire Down syndrome community. And while programming and play make up the foundation of GiGi’s Playhouse Cincinnati, they offer plenty more events and fundraising activities. “We’ll be having a Christmas Party with Santa here!” Elizabeth smiles, her enthusiasm for planning for these kiddos to meet Santa is infectious. It’s no surprise, GiGi’s Playhouse Cincinnati has a place for everyone touched by Down syndrome—whether you’ve received a prenatal diagnosis that your child will have Down syndrome, or have a family member living with this condition. I always tell people, ‘you eat with your eyes’ … so when you make a board, create what I call the ‘360 effect,’ making the board desirable to both look at and consume. From the French “chair cuite,” this tasty trend currently translates into the art of arranging meat, cheese and more. Charcuterie specialists abound, serving up bites on boards for 100 or single-serve snacks. Pricey? Sometimes (usually worth the artistry and effort). But what if you want to go DIY? Brittany Angilecchia of Britt’s Boards has four no-fail essentials for any board. This expert has been doing dazzling, delicious boards since early 2021, expanding her former friends-and-fam enterprise to its current model of charcuterie caterer and workshop biz (she even does private board-building classes in your own home). “I’ve always had a passion for food,” Brittany, a longtime teacher, smiles. “Now I’m taking the teaching part and the food part, and combining them together to create more of an experience.” Easy or elaborate, charcuterie board options can be endless (and overwhelming), but Brittany has four mainstays. Her jam of choice? Fig, specifically by Divina. “It’s my favorite jam by far.” For cheese, she chooses BellaVitano Merlot—a sweet-salty fave. “Cheddar is a crowd pleaser, but you don’t have to go that way.” Fruit-wise, she goes with grapes. “Grapes and cheese pair well together—I like purple over green, sweet versus tart.” And meat—Italian salami, any variety. “I enjoy peppered salami most.” Why stop there? If you’re building bigger, Brittany has more tips and tricks. “All my boards have Brie—it pairs really well with jam or honey, and is the one cheese I always include.” For crackers, go with variety packs for different shapes, sizes and textures instead of buying individual boxes. Same with meats—look for trio packs versus buying separate, or have the deli counter slice small quantities. Above all, don’t underestimate the time. “On average, a medium board takes at least 60 minutes to put together.” Don’t have a beautiful board? Lay down butcher paper and simply build atop that (grazing tables are in). “It’s more simple than people sometimes think.” Simple and delicious. “We feel a close connection to Loveland,” says Dr. Dave Williams of 2020 EyeCare. “And we want to weave our practice into the fabric of the community.” “After all,” he adds, “we live here, we hang out here, and we plan on practicing here for a long time—with both of us being in our mid-30s, that should be a while!” Dr. Williams opened the practice with Dr. Alex Gibberman just two years ago, and when it comes to community, they’re focused on its youngest occupants—they specialize in treatment of myopic progression (nearsightedness) in children. One new treatment option, they explain, is a compounded prescription eye drop. “It helps slow the eye from elongating, which in turn keeps nearsightedness from getting worse. It’s a great option for kids who are too young for contact lenses.” Another treatment option is a daily disposable soft contact lens, which works on the principle of peripheral defocusing. “This means the contacts are designed with concentric rings or circles consisting of zones that both correct the central vision and mildly blur the peripheral vision at the same time,” the doctors explain. This helps keep the eye from growing in length, and permanently reduces nearsightedness for patients. There’s more choices for kids. “Orthokeratology is a hard contact lens, only worn while sleeping at night. The technology has been around for quite some time, and it’s a great option for

kids who don’t want to wear contacts during the day.” These hard contact lenses flatten the center of the cornea to reduce mild to moderate nearsightedness. Of course, it’s important to be mindful of practices that promote vision and eye health before symptoms even occur. The doctors point out research that suggests during childhood, reducing screen time and increasing time spent outdoors can play an integral role in reducing myopic progression. For the doctors themselves, it’s been a curious couple of years since opening. When 2020 EyeCare welcomed its first clients, COVID was in full effect—not an ideal moment to treat new patients. “We’ve both lived in Loveland for about six years,” Dr. Gibberman explains. “We’d been friends for years and always envisioned opening a practice together.” Despite the pandemic, they quickly established a reputation for state-of-the-art tools and techniques. But it was community that pulled through and welcomed the new practice. “Loveland,” Dr. Gibberman says, “has been extremely supportive.” And in return? 2020 EyeCare gladly gives back by sponsoring the Loveland football and basketball teams, competing in local fundraisers such as NEST’s Dancing with the Stars, and participating in local health fairs. For Drs. Williams and Gibberman, it’s their way of investing in a community that’s welcomed them with open arms. CONTINUED >

+ 1 box red velvet cake mix, plus ingredients called for on box + 2 (8-oz.) blocks cream cheese, softened + 1/2 cup powdered sugar + 2 tablespoon. heavy cream + 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 350º and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners. Prepare red velvet cake batter according to box directions. Divide batter among liners and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 18 to 20 minutes. Let cool completely. Break 4 cupcakes into small crumbs. Save remaining cakes for another use. 2. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add heavy cream and vanilla and beat until stiff peaks form. 3. Line a large baking sheet with parchment. Using a small cookie scoop, scoop cream cheese mixture into balls and place on prepared baking sheet. Transfer to the freezer to chill, 1 hour. 4. Roll balls in red velvet cake crumbs until fully coated, then return to prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Not that he’s done it yet, but it’s come up in conversation. A member of the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance, Matthew is an enthusiast of all things water. When he’s not helping clients as a financial advisor at his Edward Jones office in Milford, volunteering behind-the-scenes for the LMRCA, or speaking at local high schools about financial literacy, Matthew and his family are likely to be kayaking, boating, or simply getting their feet wet in Loveland’s vibrant river-town scene. “You have it all here within a three-minute drive from our home,” Matthew confides over coffee at Hometown Café. “That’s where the community connection comes in—the grass is always greener where you water it. So, we want to make sure Loveland is thriving.” Whether it’s giving back to a community or helping his clients manage their money so they can pursue their passions, Matthew

believes that wisely investing your resources should be a natural part of life. So when it comes to money management advice? Consider Matthew’s top tips for the season. 1. Think about a Roth conversion with your pre-tax money. Utilize your current tax bracket while the market is low. 2. Fund the education accounts of your children or grandchildren. Remember, 529 funds can be used for any education expense, even K-12. 3. Review your health insurance plan. Make sure you’ve got the right coverage for your family. 4.
