A Huge Helping of Summer SHOW OF HANDS: HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE EXCITED TO GET OUT AND DO THINGS THIS SUMMER? Me! Me! Me and me! It feels like there are countless events, new places opening and plenty of plans to be made. Of course, I have some thoughts on how you can spend your sunny summer days. Ice ... cold … beer frosting up the glass. On a hot day nothing is better (well maybe ice cream—we’ll get to that in a minute). Loveland has some fantastic places to grab a brew— but what if you’re biking from Loveland and want to make a pit stop for some beer-rific refreshment? Cartridge Brewing, Monkey Bar and new-kid-on-the-block Miamiville Trailyard are all excellent choices. Read Bites, Bikes and Brews to get the scoop on what’s new, what’s changed, what’s planned—and what you should eat and drink at each location.

“We wanted to create a social network that helps young professionals connect with each other—not just for development, but also for support”

VER THE PAST FIVE YEARS, THE LOVELAND YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

ORGANIZATION HAS ENRICHED THE COMMUNITY, “UNITING AND DEVELOPING OUR YOUNG PEOPLE,” SAYS MEREDITH TAYLOR. “It’s a platform for members to build relationships, develop professionally and impact our community. We strive to cultivate future leaders, work to keep our young professionals in the area, and foster economic growth.” “Most young professionals have the same concerns,” adds Nick Winnenberg. “‘How do I grow in my career? How do I (maintain) work-life balance?’ We wanted to create a social network that helps young professionals connect with each other—not just for development, but also for support.” It’s about new adventures, as well—upcoming LYP events include a tour of Cartridge Brewing in July, a river float in August, and Party in the Park in September. So what makes an organization like this so important for young professionals— and our community? We asked the experts.

“When small businesses do well, the community thrives. I really enjoy knowing my work helps strengthen those businesses and our community,” says Brien Gearin. Founder and CEO of Ricochet Digital Marketing, Brien specializes in advertising, copywriting

B RIE N GE ARIN

and digital marketing. “Without a strong community, we’re just a bunch of strangers inhabiting similar space. Community is what brings people together, makes us want to go out and enjoy our town, and always do what we can to help improve it—to ensure it’s an enjoyable place to live and work.” Brien’s not only learned from his experiences, he’s ready to help other young leaders succeed as well. “There are so many ways in which young professionals can lead in our community, and I hope to inspire others by example.” He’s also hopeful that the organization can positively impact the future of Loveland. “LYP has really shown me what it means to be part of such a great community, and prepared me to make Loveland a better place after meeting the people who make Loveland ‘tick’—successful longtime business owners, the mayor, city council members. Plus, connecting with those closer to my age helps us feel like we’ve had a hand in building Loveland’s future.”

M E RE DITH TAYLOR “Our mission to connect young professionals has always stayed true,” Meredith points out—even when those young professionals found themselves navigating a pandemic. Last year, for example, the group hosted virtual trivia nights and events at the Loveland Museum Center. Other events include happy hours with special guests from local nonprofit organizations, such as the Pink Ribbon Girls and NEST CLC. “Healthy happy hours” have included a visit to Power Ryde, and a climb at Mosaic planned for later this year. “Our river float is a favorite,” Meredith says. “We try to have a good time, while also being a part of the community.”

LYP Co-founder

NICK WINNENBERG “We bring in people from the community to have conversations,” Nick says of the group’s events. “We love hosting business owners, nonprofit leaders, government leaders and more. We want people to get involved in their community—and that’s led to some really great conversations.” According to Nick, the value to LYP members is about so much more than business networking. “We’ve tried a lot of creative things,” Nick continues. “The one consistent thing is that at every event, friendships form. Eventually, we realized that’s the actual value behind LYP—long-lasting, authentic relationships.” Interested in sitting on the Young Professionals planning committee? “The time and extra expenses during that period were tough,” Joel explains. “But it’s rewarding to go out now and have fun while teaching skills to my kids … and also make some money for our family.” The name of the business—and the truck—is Special Neat Treats. While they’re licensed to operate in any location around the state of Ohio, their family’s recent focus has been 100% local. “We live in the Loveland area, so we have concentrated on this lovely slice of Ohio so far,” Joel shares. “We’ve found the people of Loveland, Morrow and Maineville to be so friendly and accepting ... we’re planning to expand to some other communities around

It’s so exciting to sense that this dream that God put in my heart has come true and is unfolding before my eyes.”

North on the trail from downtown Loveland, make this brewpub a stop for dinner, weekend lunch or afternoon drinks on the patio or in their large indoor dining space. There’s ample bike parking—simply enter from the main drive just around the corner from the trail. This summer, owners Kyle and Lindsey Hackbarth are in the process of expanding the patio to accommodate more guests with built-in rail seating and lights. They’ve also refreshed the menu—offering lighter, seasonal fare as well as wine, craft cocktails and 20 brews on tap, including a

Mexican-style lager and a Paloma version of their 1890 that tastes like a grapefruit margarita.

The Cartucho is a Mexican-style lager with a low ABV and super-light body, making it the quintessential summer beer.

The Paloma cocktail is an updated version of their 1890, with Espolon reposado, Grand Marnier, fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice, lime, and salt.

1. Conveniently located along the trail, just 7 miles from downtown Loveland, the ride to Cartridge is scenic and serene—and the “old Powder Factory” makes a great stop. 2. Cartridge prides itself on brewing traditional-style beers like lagers, pilsners and dunkels alongside their IPAs and other small-batch experimental beers. “We’ve really leaned into lagers, which is uncommon currently,” Lindsey says. “We have IPAs and they’re great—but we want to make beer that tastes like beer. So we’re pulling the vast majority of our beer back from flash-in-the-pan to making traditional beer styles with different variations ... they really show the talent of our brewer.” 3. The establishment is a family-friendly, full-service, fromscratch brewpub featuring high-caliber chefs and a big menu all inside a historic landmark. They also offer tasting tours— behind-the-scenes on the brewdeck, stories about the factory’s past, plus a guided beer flight with pretzels and beer cheese. CartridgeBrewing.com

THE MONKEY BAR & GRILLE While the Monkey Bar & Grille may take its moniker from Sam, a chimpanzee that lived at the location in the 70s and 80s, owners Mark and Amy Altemeier aren’t

monkeying around when it comes to the improvements they’ve made in the past five years. Manager Amber Olbrot explains that Mark started renovations in the basement, then worked his way up to the Lincoln bar and the kitchen area, then tackled the patio. By year four, he was building the upper balcony with a view of the river—year five, he had constructed the porch wraparound and more restrooms, eventually adding 5,000 square feet. The Altemeiers are adding a full kitchen in the near future, but their current food truck offerings will remain. Amber says they love the community, variety and atmosphere the trucks bring to the bar.

1. The Monkey Bar has a unique history—while, sadly, several fires ruined most of the original building, some of the square brick is original. Plus, they also have a historian on staff who can tell you about Sam, Foster’s Crossing or the train that used to carry passengers from downtown on the weekends. 2. In addition to stopping along the bike trail, patrons can also kayak or canoe right to the bar, or fish off the bridge. 3. You can pick your own bar, from the basement bourbon cellar to the patio featuring live entertainment, or from the riverside balcony to the indoor balcony—all with more than 20 different beers on tap. Spaces are also available to rent for parties and special events. TheMonkeyBarAndGrille.com

3. The Trailyard is dog-friendly, has spots to park

100+ bikes and even welcomes horseback riders. “We poured lots of love, time, energy and research

into the creation of the Trailyard—all focused on delivering a satisfying customer experience,” say the owners. MiamivilleTrailyard.com

MIAMIVILLE TRAILYARD Although located in a brand-new building, the Miamiville Trailyard is no less historic. Three families set out to build the Trailyard on two acres and 500 feet of frontage on the bike trail—the same land that once witnessed Civil War battles and President Lincoln passing through on a train on his way to his inauguration. The land was purchased in late 2017, and planning and design began immediately. Construction started in fall 2019, took a “COVID pause” in April 2020, and was finally completed this past spring. The space features a large amount of both indoor and outdoor seating, plus a second story loft for semi-private gatherings and a great view of the trail. CityLifestyle.com/LovelandOH

CHARCUTERIE BOARDS, POOLSIDE TREATS, ROAD TRIP SNACKS OR RIVER REFUEL, THERE’S ONLY ONE STOP ON THE TRAIL THAT HAS EVERY NIBBLE, NOSH AND CRAVING COVERED—TRAILSIDE PROVISIONS. “People want to treat themselves,” owner Vickie Larcomb offers. “I can handle that! I have the jams, the crackers, the caramels, the honeys, the dips ...” More to the point, Vickie’s snacks, spreads and sides are all either local-made or small-batch sourced. She searches out the women-owned side gigs, the family farms, the small businesses that do it for the passion and craft—which is exactly what makes Vickie’s goods so, well, good. “Everything here—it’s things you actually want to eat, not just give away to impress.” So make the stop—and treat yourself. in good hands SECURE THE FUTURE OF YOUR FAMILY WITH ESTATE PLANNING

1

Q: What kind of core documents should you have in place to ensure your family is protected? A: The most important would be to establish an estate plan that includes

documents like last will and testaments, trusts, financial/medical powers of attorney and living wills. Core estate documents will look different from family to

family, but you should start with the idea of putting the simplest estate plan possible in place—usually that means the documents above minus a trust.

Q: Why does a family need these sorts of documents?

Q: How often do they need to be updated? A: It depends, but usually not too often. Things like death, divorce, buying a new

house—those are occurrences that usually require some changes.

Q: How do you go about getting these documents? A: It’s as easy as giving our office a call or sending us an email requesting a

no-charge consultation. Although most people assume they’ll start incurring significant costs each time they call an attorney with a question, that’s not the case with us. We’re a small firm with two attorneys—but we’re well versed and experienced with a broad range of matters. We’ll discuss a strategy and decide whether to move forward. WoltermanLaw.com | 434 W.
