You’ll Always Be My Fur Baby BEFORE MY DAUGHTER, THERE WAS MY FUR BABY, CHARLIE. Neither my husband nor I grew up with dogs, so this was a new venture for both of us. We weren’t entirely prepared for midnight wake-ups, accidents and her love of chewing all things plastic. But

love trumped gnawed power cords, earbuds and flip-flops (yup, every pair I owned), and we couldn’t imagine life without her. She paved the way for our daughter, and though my attention is now divided, I still find time to snuggle with Charlie on the couch. That’s why this is the kids and pets issue—because sometimes our babies happen to have fur. Occasionally they have feathers and scales as well, something Dr. Peter Hill knows firsthand as owner/veterinarian at PetCare Animal Hospital. In addition to the usual canines and felines, he treats snakes, turtles, emus and even bald eagles. Did we mention he happens to be the vet at the Newport Aquarium? Loveland’s pretty lucky to have this exotic animal expert right in our hometown. Check out his tale (pun intended) in “From Puppies to Penguins.” I’m also particularly excited to share Sampson’s story with you. FOR FUNDING COLLEGE?
So what about current and estimated college costs? Here’s a real breakdown. FWAG also offered us the following figures—numbers that came from sources with different opinions about inflation, but still based on 18 years until college if planning starts at a child’s birth. Nearly all sources expect the cost of college to double at least once—and maybe twice—over that 18-year period. University of Cincinnati current cost: in-state $28,156 | out-of-state $44,490 Cost in 18 years: lower estimate $56,312 | upper estimate $112,624 Xavier University current cost: $52,380 Cost in 18 years: lower estimate $104,760 | upper estimate $209,520 Vanderbilt University current cost: $67,392 Cost in 18 years: lower estimate $134,784 | upper estimate $269,568 Current school costs came from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and contain data through spring 2018. Sources for estimated inflation rates were FinAid.org and NCES.ED.gov.

“OHIO’S

RECREATIONS OUTLET HAS BEEN HAPPILY SERVING THE GREATER CINCINNATI AREA FOR MORE THAN 25 YEARS. They’ve provided many of the playsets, trampolines and wooden swing sets families already depend on and offer two showrooms (in Milford and Columbus) for on-site play. The swing sets, trampolines and other play accessories are an important part of Recreations Outlet’s “Unplugged Play” movement, and their community-minded approach is reflected in the myriad ways they’ve given back to area organizations. “We created the ‘Unplugged Play’ campaign as an answer to the question, ‘What am I supposed to do?’ once children are directed outside,” Marketing Director Kate Walker shares. If youngsters come up short with their own outdoor plans, she suggests, “Give them a trampoline. Give them a playset.” The benefits of this type of activity are obvious—it provides relief from stress and anxiety, increases strength and coordination, and combats obesity and other health concerns. Recreations Outlet has delivered that signature brand of fun for more than two decades, in backyards and more prominent community spaces. In fact, if you’ve taken the family to a Reds game this summer, there’s a good chance you’ve seen some of what Recreations Outlet can do. One of many upgrades this year to Great American Ball Park was a large play area for kids of all ages within

COMMUNITY STRONG, ACTIVITY-DRIVEN
(CON TI N UED)
All in a day’s work for an organization that’s always seen community engagement as a core value. Recreations Outlet’s charitable streak began years ago when owner Pete DeLois found himself invested in helping local schools and giving back while his own children were growing up. “Now, he’s continued on that path,” Kate says. In addition to assisting larger groups like Make-A-Wish and St. Jude, Pete takes a special interest in supporting charities that aren’t quite as well-known. “On a monthly basis,” Kate says, “Pete really likes staying closer to home and helping out some of the local charities that don’t receive federal assistance.” She points out recent contributions and local support for Joshua’s Closet and the Dragonfly Foundation. In fact, more than $75,000 has been donated to local charities as a result of Recreations

Loveland Lifestyle | August 2019
Play-By-Play Many families aren’t sure where to start when it comes to outdoor playsets, and that’s where Recreations Outlet brings their experience to the table. “Generally people start out with a playset,” Kate points out. “It’s multipurpose and provides everything a little one might want. “After toddler swings, at some point, the kids want something different. That’s when they usually move to a trampoline,” noting that the appeal of a backyard trampoline is one that endures. “Around sixth grade, you see kids getting really into basketball, so we provide the hoops.” Beyond that, even hot tubs are an option for hydrotherapy and relaxation.
TODDLER Play surfaces are a great start, with toddler swings and more complex playsets making sense as little bodies increase coordination and strength. You’ll want to visit a Recreations Outlet location for hands-on playtime there to see what your little one is drawn toward.
MIDDLE SCHOOL Game room equipment provides year-round competitive play, with classic games like foosball, air hockey and shuffleboard answering the call of the adventurous. Adjustable basketball hoops are also going to be a slam dunk!
TEENAGE The adjustable basketball hoop’s gotten higher to provide more activity below, and game room equipment like table tennis and foosball provide fast-paced action. Hot tubs also enter the picture and are sure to be enjoyed by the entire family. Whether visiting Recreations Outlet for a trial run in a hands-on showroom or consulting with the team to upgrade your family’s game room or backyard experience, Recreations Outlet has it all. “Some of our best business is from repeat customers,” Kate says. “So we’re doing something right!”

Loveland Lifestyle | August 2019
FEELING INSPIRED IS EASY. Acting on that inspiration? That’s the hard part. Most adults have trouble mobilizing their hopes and dreams—it’s even rarer still for children. But Loveland High School twins Alex and Hannah Laman were the exception, co-founding Adopt a Book in the fall of 2011 when they were just 8 years old. Moved by a newspaper article detailing the lack of libraries and access to books experienced by many Cincinnati-area children and students, these young locals decided right then and there that they wanted to make a difference.
IT STARTED WITH A SIMPLE
The Laman siblings began their journey with a request to friends
BOOK DRIVE …
and family for donations of new or gently used books, which they would then distribute to the underserved children in the city. From there, their efforts quickly snowballed. They began to meet with community, business and charity organizations to grow Adopt a Book and get the word out. “We wanted to make a difference … that started with a book drive that eventually grew into the organization that we have now,” Alex says.
“I HOPE LITERACY BECOMES MORE OF A WIDESPREAD GOAL AMONG CHILDREN NATIONWIDE AND GROWS TO WHERE KIDS ARE EXCITED TO READ AT A YOUNG AGE, THAT IT’S SOMETHING THEY WANT TO DO.” –ALEX LAMAN
... AND EXPANDED INTO A NONPROFIT At first, the twins found themselves having to store the books in the family’s garage. Once word spread that they were collecting and distributing books, they had to move the operation into their basement, then to a small storage unit, and finally, to the larger storage space they have now, complete with a loading dock for easier distribution. The twins spend about five to 10 hours a week working with the books during the summer, somewhat less during the school year. They count, sort and deliver the books with the help of adult transportation, though they do encourage their donee groups to come pick up the books from their dock. Over the past eight years, they’ve given more than 150,000 books to more than 100 organizations, schools and youth programs. Both the twins love meeting their book recipients, knowing they are passing on their love for literacy. “I like going on the deliveries because we get to see the actual exchange of the books to the kids … that’s a really neat experience to have,” Hannah says. As the Lamans prepare for college, they hope to find another family, student or organization who can pick up (and continue to run with) the Adopt a Book torch, while they stay on as advisers. We take blood, look for intestinal parasites, manage any mortalities and of course correct related problems where we can … water quality, disease conditions, etc.” VOLUNTEER RAPTOR DOCTOR As if traveling around to three different offices throughout the city to provide quality animal care wasn’t enough, Dr. Hill also volunteers with RAPTOR, a nonprofit volunteer organization in Milford dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey. They achieve this through education, research, community service and the rehabilitation of sick or injured birds. RAPTOR sometimes finds these birds via phone calls from concerned citizens who have seen an animal down or who’ve captured one and need RAPTOR to come pick it up. When a bird needs help, Dr. Hill is one of the veterinarians RAPTOR counts on. He’s worked on birds of prey such as eagles, hawks and owls. “I find birds very challenging because if they can’t be rehabilitated or repaired to the point where they can go back to the wild, then under federal wildlife law, they have to be euthanized,” he says. “We try to get these animals as best we can back on the wing.” Although Dr. Hill has been presented with many complicated cases throughout his career, he says he really enjoys working with birds. “Birds are certainly a very challenging species to diagnose and treat,” he says. “Oftentimes when birds are sick, they are far along in the disease process—people think they’re perfectly healthy until they’re not. And when they’re not, they’re really not because they hide their symptoms … I find unique challenges in all different kinds of pets.” Through all of his life’s work, whether at his own practice, the Newport Aquarium or RAPTOR, what he values most is the interaction he has with people and their pets. He appreciates just how important the human-animal bond is. “I really enjoy helping people improve their pets’ quality of life … through education, health care and advising them on preventative measures. “People treat their animals like their kids in a lot of respects, so a client that’s compliant in doing the things we recommend will have an animal that is going to be happy and healthy … one that’s going to stay in their hands much longer,” Dr. Hill says. “I think the biggest reward is getting to the endpoint of a sick animal and seeing them healthy and back in their owner’s hands.” PetCareCincinnati.com 10555 Loveland-Maderia Road | 513.677.2930 8610 Blue Ash Road | 513.793.3032

With college costs increasing at a faster rate than normal inflation, Bill and Donna wanted to help their two grandchildren prepare for the future outside of contributing to a college fund (something their parents were already doing). Bill and Donna contacted their financial planner at Family Wealth Advisory Group to talk about options and goals: •
Importance of helping their grandkids and where that fits within overall financial priorities
•
How much they can commit to this goal — and can it be reduced or dropped if circumstances change
•
How to best complement what the parents are already doing
•
Values they want to communicate to their grandkids with this gift
•
Types of investments and savings vehicles that could help achieve the goal
The result: a tax-efficient plan using custodial accounts in the kids’ names, plus a separate account Bill and Donna could use at their

RESCUE TO REDEMPTION, ONE DOG’S JOURNEY BACK TO LIFE … AND LOVE
PHOTOGRAPHY
SAMPSON IS A SPECIAL DOG—NOT JUST BECAUSE OF HIS SILKY SHORT HAIR, POINTED PERKY EARS OR OH-SO-SWEET PUPPY DOG EYES. It’s hard to imagine the abuse he suffered in a cramped crate without food or water. Covered with raw spots, no muscle tone in his rear legs, he weighed only 15 pounds. The veterinarian gave him just days to live. But that’s not what fate had in store for him. Missy Mikula spotted him on Petfinder—one look at his picture had her reaching out. Missy and Sampson’s foster mom met … and they both knew right away. “But first we had to talk my husband, Albert, into it,” Missy says. Love prevailed. Sampson came to them as “Sammy,” but Albert rechristened him Sampson. Scared and starved, Sampson would hurriedly, ravenously devour his food. An untreated broken bone left him with a crooked leg and a damaged spirit. But recovery began, slow and sure. “He feels safe now,” Missy smiles. When Missy saw our contest for a cover dog, she went right to Albert. “We’re entering Sampson, and he’s going to win,” Albert looked at her like she had six heads. But she was right—her words about Sampson’s stunning transformation from abused, tail-down puppy to “the most loving, affectionate, loyal, smart, trusting rescue dog ever” had us convinced from the get-go. A photo showdown on social media (against fellow rescue Henry, our second-place doggo) and Sampson’s title was set. The Mikulas’ son, Cam, had wanted a dog “that did something.” “Oh, he does something,” Cam laughs now. “He’s the softest, sweetest dog ever,” Missy says. “He’ll fetch forever. He goes all day long.” A feat we witnessed firsthand when we met this Australian Kelpie and his amazing family. It was easy to see Sampson’s joy shining through—and the love this trio shares with their four-legged member of the family. “We owe him the best day every day.” Happily transformed into the sweetest of foursomes, their license plate says it all: BST 2 RSQ. 38
