January 2025 PUBLISHER
Amy Dimes | amy.dimes@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R I AL C O O R D I N ATO R
Bernie Augustine | bernie.augustine@citylifestyle.com
For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Long Branch City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

START THE YEAR Strong
The new year is here, and it’s finally time to cash in on that resolution to get fit. You enter a gym — either for the first time, or the first time in a while — and you’re greeted with racks of dumbbells, weight machines, and a lot of people who look like they know exactly what they’re doing. Unsure of how to start, and maybe a little too intimidated to ask for help, you ease onto a treadmill for 20 minutes. For the next few weeks, that’s your exact routine, until you eventually lose motivation, stop going -- but keep paying for four months because, hey, you might go back -- and quit the gym. Sound familiar? Your fitness goals don’t have to end in defeat, says Mark Steinfield, and they certainly don’t have to feel out of reach. Steinfield, owner of Gold’s Gym and PhormPhit in Long Branch, believes people should take a practical approach when it comes to their health and wellness. His philosophy: Work out to improve your quality of life. You’ll thank yourself later. It’s a motto he’s followed throughout his fitness career. Steinfield was working in the entertainment industry managing bands and creating New York radio commercials while taking martial arts classes when he began to workout in a small fitness studio. “I found myself wanting to go work out more than going to the martial arts classes,” said Steinfield. That interest grew into a passion, which eventually grew into a business. He opened his first Gold’s Gym franchise in 1989, and has owned and operated several others in the decades since. He’s also worked as a nutritionist for bodybuilders, and as a consultant in the fitness industry. But what, exactly, is the best way to get started on your health journey? According to Steinfield, it’s with a personal trainer. “I think professional guidance is important when you're getting started,” said Steinfield, a personal trainer himself. “A trainer's going to get you set up on a basic program. I see a lot of people will walk in and get on a treadmill because it's the easiest thing to do, to just push start and go. But that's only one type of exercise.” Trainers will help familiarize you with the layout of a gym, the kinds of exercises you should be doing to help maintain and/or grow muscle, and will help you learn how to safely push your limits, says Steinfield, who employs 10 National Academy of Sports Medicine-certified trainers between his two Long Branch locations. Once you’re feeling confident and comfortable, you can strike out on your own. “I always tell people, start slow,” said Steinfield. “There's no race here. Three times a week is a good number. It's easy to do, it doesn't take very long, and you're going to feel much better as the blood flows through the body. The more stationary you are, the more sedentary you are, the more aches and pains start to develop.” Variety is key, according to Steinfield, and it’s important to push yourself a little more each day. “Don't do the same thing every day, because what happens is your body will adapt to that movement, and then you need to do more to get a positive gain.” Consider your needs, advises Steinfield, and make yourself aware of your options. From organized exercise classes like cycling, boxing and yoga, to private training sessions like those offered at Gold’s Gym and PhormPhit, find something that feels right for you and gets your blood pumping. Sessions are offered on a 60-minute basis at Phorm, and a 30- and 60-minute basis at Gold’s Gym. Each workout is tailor-made, and can focus on high intensity interval bodyweight workouts; weight training with free weights and kettlebells; and more. If you can’t make it into a gym, he suggests substituting other activities like brisk walks, hiking, kayaking, and bike riding; each will provide their own health benefit. “Fitness is a necessity. It's no longer a question of if you're going to start exercising, it’s when and where," Steinfeld said. "You have to feel comfortable where you go ... that's why we've created a really good environment in both locations.” “The idea is to exercise for a purpose: To improve the quality of your life and your wellbeing.”

Sandra Valencia flipped the script after a cancer diagnosis turned the real estate agent’s world upside down
The ‘Real’ Deal Sandra Valencia remembers the call came on a Sunday, around noon. It was 2020, the height of the housing crisis brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, and the real estate agent was on the phone with a client, the client's father, and a seller's listing agent. The home in question had almost two dozen other bids, and Valencia was determined to get her client the property. In the middle of the call, Valencia saw that her doctor was trying to reach her. "I went, 'this can’t be good'," Valencia recalled. "I said to my doctor, 'I know you need to talk to me, but I've got to conclude this other conversation.'"
26
M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS
Valencia had switched careers just a short time prior, leaving her role of CTO for Chase's auto financing division on Wall Street to follow her passion for real estate. She relocated from Manhattan to North Jersey, where she was born and raised, following the abrupt death of her step-mother and became her late father's caretaker. Valencia later survived a head-on car crash that occurred on her birthday, and navigated financial stress caused by life's rigmarole. She finally felt like she was able to pour herself into her real estate career. And then, this. When her diagnosis was revealed, Valencia was resolute: "I'm going to beat this thing," she decided. Just as she had tackled all the other adversity in her life up to this point, she got to work. Valencia underwent surgery and radiation in the months that followed, and continued to work full time. Never one to focus solely on herself, Valencia knew people were depending on her to help them. She's a people person through-andthrough, after all, always ready to go to the ends of the earth to support others.
CONTINUED >
Before she could hang up to continue with her client, out came the diagnosis. "Nobody likes to hear the 'C word'," said Valencia. "I just sat on the phone, speechless." Within minutes, Valencia was back on the line with her client, securing the deal to get the woman into her new home. Her client needed her in that moment, and Valencia wasn't going to let her down. "When I finished sobbing, I closed the deal. And then I turned my phone off and sobbed for two more months." The reality sunk in for Valencia afterwards: She had breast cancer. It was the latest in a series of blows to the generally positive, self-professed "Jersey Girl."

“BEING HEALTHY IS ABOUT BEING HAPPY. IT’S ABOUT THE ENERGY AND THE VIBRATION YOU BRING INTO YOUR DAY, EVERY SINGLE DAY. IT’S ABOUT GRATITUDE. ... IT’S JUST ABOUT KINDNESS, AND TREATING EVERYBODY ELSE THE WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED.”
28
M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS
These days, Valencia's cancer is in remission. She continues to take medication, and deal with side effects and doctor's appointments. But she'll take those little speed bumps any day, compared to the alternative. "I'm just super happy to be alive," admitted Valencia. Real estate, too, proves to be a remedy for Valencia. The Christie's International Real Estate Group agent "enjoys working with people, and helping them get to new chapters" in their lives. "That's really what drives me," said Valencia, whose work as a global Realtor has helped individuals from other states, and those from other countries looking to buy in the U.S. "I love helping people. It's rewarding to me … I know how stressful [homebuying] can be. I know how you need somebody on your side, who will have your back. It's more for me about helping people move from one stage to the other, and being there as somebody who's helping you make that huge life change." Valencia — who also works with the sales team at The Atlantic Club, the luxury beachfront condominiums along Ocean Avenue — hopes to continue to grow her presence in Monmouth County, which she describes as her dream location. She also wants to eventually start a non-profit that focuses on helping kids, dogs, and people with cancer. It would just be another way for her to be a friend to all — especially those who need it most.
As she moves toward her goals, Valencia will continue to share with others her philosophy of what it means to be healthy. "Being healthy is about being happy. It's about the energy and the vibration you bring into your day, every single day. It's about gratitude. It's about the way you look at things. It's just about kindness, and treating everybody else the way you want to be treated, the way you think makes sense and, and also having an understanding that not everyone is going to be like you, and that's OK, and that doesn't make them any better or worse than you are." She knows from experience life won't always be easy, but she’s ready — and excited — for the rest of the ride. "Everything happens for a reason." Sandra Valencia is based out of Christie's Fair Haven office (732-800-5050). She is also the founder of the LeTip networking chapters of Long Branch and Fort Monmouth.

Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN
SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.
This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2/3 cup raisins Optional: chocolate chips as desired Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.
Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

HEALTHY OPTIONS TO EASE CRAVINGS AND SOOTHE THE SOUL
Juice cleanse
After the hustle and bustle of the holidays – the parties, the food, the drinks – it’s understandable to feel like you might need a break from having wine (or beer, or cocktails) with what feels like every rich meal that you’ve had since Thanksgiving. We’ve got you. Or, we should say that Griffy’s Organics has got you. Avry Griffin, the co-owner of the West End juice spot, was kind enough to go over some of the options Griffy’s provides to help get your body (and mind) right.

SEA MOSS GEL
“This is the most bio-available multivitamin you can have,” Griffin said, noting that the moss contains 92 of the 102 essential vitamins your body craves. They source it out of the Caribbean (St. Vincent), get it shipped to Long Branch where it’s cleaned, treated and turned into a gel. “It’s grown in volcanic waters, so it’s mineral-rich,” he said, adding that it “supports all areas of overall health.”
CRAN-APPLE & GRIFFY’S CIDERS
There is still some time to get these seasonal offerings, with ingredients that are wholly sourced from New Jersey; the apples come from New Egypt, the cranberries from Browns Mills and the aronia berries from Hopewell. The juices are cold pressed, which Griffin says is done to keep the live enzymes in tact. “They’re both great for immunity,” he says.
SUPER-SHROOM LATTES
“Mushrooms have gained so much popularity because of cognition, brain health and immunity support,” Griffin says. Griffy’s adds the super-shroom recipe to coffee (you can get it caffeinated or decaf) and says it “tastes like a hot chocolate.”
CLEANSES
Griffy’s offers a variety of juice cleanses (raw juices are one of their signature items), including a Super Slimdown Cleanse, which is a box of six curated juices meant to drink over the course of a day while abstaining from food. “During the holidays, people eat poorly and our cleanses are really popular for people,” he said. “It’s a really nice mixture of greens and fruit and metabolism-boosting juice.” The box comes with instructions and a consultation with their staff nutritionist. Pro tip: Remember to drink water in addition to the juices.
HEALTHY SNACKS
Griffy’s also stocks plenty of edible options, including three varieties of hummus (carrot, red pepper and original), guacamole, fermented foods (sauerkraut and Moroccan beets) as well as selections that can satisfy your sweet tooth; a mindful truffle (coconut truffle with organic ingredients), the popular Griffy’s cup (it’s a spin on a peanut butter cup with organic chocolate, date and peanut butter) and all-natural glazed blueberry donut holes.

DRY JANUARY The holidays can be a lot. A lot of food, a lot of fun, a lot of drinks. If you need a break after a couple of packed weeks, but still want a drink that packs flavor and tastes fresh, our friend Jared Gonsalves has just the thing for you.
MOJITO, HOLD THE ALCOHOL Step 1. With a non-alcoholic drink, the ingredients are key. The mint, lime and simple syrup in a mojito do the work here. Muddle them together in a highball glass. Step 2. Add ice Step 3. Top with club soda, garnish and enjoy
