LIFESTYLE LETTER
So Much to Be Thankful For! In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and exceeding goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings. The best part of Thanksgiving for me is spending this special time with my family: my three children, my husband and our families. It's a chance to slow down a bit—even if it is for just a few hours—and enjoy one another's company. Moments like this can't be replaced. They create priceless memories I'll cherish forever. I wish you and your family a very happy Thanksgiving, and hope to see you around town. Warmest wishes to you and your family,

FIXING A STUFFY NOSE AND
SNORING QUESTION: My nose is always stuffy, worse on one side. And not only that...I am told by my spouse that I snore loud! What can I do? ANSWER: Your best bet is a full evaluation by an ENT specialist who can determine what is causing your nasal obstruction and the most effective treatment. Often, once the nasal breathing is restored, the loud snoring is then diminished or even eliminated. There are several steps necessary for a thorough exam:
Frank J Scaccia, MD FACS
HISTORY: Questioning the patient about previous trauma to the nose and also anything that may cause chronic swelling inside the nasal cavity like recurrent sinus infections, allergies and overuse of intranasal sprays such as Afrin.
RIVERSIDE
EXAM: Fiberoptic scope of the nose and throat to look for septal deviations, polyps, abnormal enlargements of other intranasal structures, and draining secretions which can be cultured. Check the external nasal structure for cartilage collapse that can result in a valve obstruction. Also allergy tests, home sleep studies and CT scans if indicated.
American Board of Otolaryngology (ENT) • American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery • Top NYC Metro Doctor 2006-2023 • In-office NJ state licensed accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center
TREATMENT: Customized to the patient’s cause of obstruction. Can be as simple as a regimen of intranasal and oral medications or more complex involving surgical procedures. ADVANCED SURGICAL TREATMENT: The latest techniques allow for quick recovery, no bruising, more precise repairs and open breathing immediately after surgery. Technology has improved with the use of 4K camera/monitors and microscopic visualization, laser guided infrared navigation and new methods and instrumentation for septum repair, turbinate reduction, valve collapse reconstruction and sinus blockage. Rhinoplasty techniques have also advanced and can often be performed at the same time if there are external nasal cosmetic concerns.

MARILYN SCHLOSSBACH F O O D F O R T H O U G H T BY T H E S E A Locally known as a restaurateur, chef and co-owner of Whitechapel Projects here in Long Branch, Marilyn Schlossbach and her community-driven work go far beyond the walls of her restaurant. Her list of involvement is long: Boys and Girls Club, Interfaith Neighbors, Surfrider Foundation, Clean Ocean Action, NJ Restaurant and Hospitality Association, Long Branch Chamber of Commerce and the College Achieve Charter School. But the one most near and dear to her heart is Food for Thought by the Sea, her personal foundation that gives back to all of these other great groups. “I created it to bring a collaborative space to the nonprofit organizations in Asbury Park and surrounding communities to address the growing needs in the community,” Schlossbach says. “I found a strong need for empowering people in the community through workforce development and basic needs of housing and food.” You’ll see the Food for Thought food truck participating in events around Monmouth County, and during Covid, they delivered 2,000 meals weekly. “Whether it’s one day or many, we use youth in our community through a training program to give them hospitality skills and culinary experience. Every time someone eats at our truck, it helps us raise funds for our mission.” You can help out by eating at the truck, reaching out through social media, purchasing Feed this Community cookbook— with all proceeds go to the local nonprofits mentioned above—or volunteering anytime they have an event. foodforthoughtap.com CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . CORY SCHIFTER M U LT I P L E N O N P R O F I T S Whether it’s designing the perfect engagement ring or picking out the just right gift for a birthday or anniversary, Cory Schifter, owner of Casale Jewelers in Red Bank and Staten Island, has helped thousands of customers through the years. But his generosity doesn’t stop there. It started back in 2009 when Schifter first caught the philanthropic bug when selling cookies at a Breast Cancer Walk in Staten Island. His altruistic actions have since grown into an impressive mission that gives away more than $100,000 a year to local nonprofits. “I’m just a small business owner with a huge heart,” Schifter admits. In just this past year alone, through Casale Jewelers’ vacation giveaways, he’s raised money for Red Bank Catholic Football, Eat Clean Bro’s annual gala, Live Like a Unicorn pediatric cancer foundation, No Limits Café, Chamber of Commerce gala, Marlboro Football and Manalapan Soccer. As if that isn’t enough, Schifter is also on the board of Emergency Children’s Help Organization (ECHO), which provides financial assistance to children experiencing a challenging medical or living emergency, and annually supports Sunrise Day Camp, a summer camp for kids diagnosed with cancer. Raising three kids with his wife Jessica while running a successful business in two states can be a challenge for even the most accomplished, but Schifter sets the bar even higher with his charitable work. “I try to live by example,” he says, “not just for people in the community but also for my children.”

AMY BROZA H O L I DAY E X P R E S S Amy Broza, a lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore, professional vocalist and paralegal, has been a longtime volunteer of Holiday Express, where she sings with the band and is currently the vice president of the charity’s Board of Trustees. She was also the recipient of this year’s Mary T. Robinson Award for her spirit of selfless giving. Holiday Express delivers music, food, gifts, financial support and friendship to those with the greatest need for the gift of human kindness. “We visit people that get little to no attention at the holidays,” Amy says, “and the experience of interacting with them, both musically and personally, can seem silly, but is often very profound. We are very fortunate to be able to do what we do.” Holiday Express relies on the generosity of supporters to fund their mission. Each year, they host a golf outing, summer clambake on the beach and holiday benefit concert at the historic Count Basie Center of the Arts in Red Bank. They also bring their volunteers and supporters together for seasonal bingo nights. “We are blessed to be part of a caring community,” Broza says. They welcome volunteers to lend a hand at their warehouse, at shows and fundraising events. They also appreciate financial and in-kind support to help deliver the gift of human kindness to people in need. holidayexpress.org CONTINUED >

DARRELL WORDELMANN S I N G LE PA R E N T S W I T H M S In 2020, Darrell Wordelmann, managing partner of Rooney’s Oceanfront Restaurant, founded Single Parents with MS, a charity inspired by his late mother, Mary. Later that same year, Darrell was diagnosed with MS. The organization is dedicated to assisting single parents diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Mary was first diagnosed with MS in 1966 and courageously went on to give birth to her two boys in 1970 and 1975—Darrell and his brother Bobby. They were blessed to have their father present in their lives, but that is not the case for all families. Darrell clearly remembers one Christmas morning when there were just three presents under the tree and he said to himself: “I will never allow that to happen again.” Throughout the years Christmas has become his favorite holiday but Darrell has always thought that he could be doing more for those in

need—which is the purpose of Single Parents with MS. Darrell hopes to make a difference for families who struggle with MS, especially the single parents. They provide support during the holidays, ADA equipment, meals, renovations, financial assistance and more. Every Spring the organization hosts Mustaches for MS, a luncheon, raising upwards of $100,000, with all profits going toward Single Parents with MS. They also present their Give Back Award to someone who has devoted their time to help those with MS. Darrell maintains a positive outlook regarding his own diagnosis and leads a healthy lifestyle by eating well, exercising, following prescribed medical care and spending time with his wife and son. You can get involved with Single Parents with MS by reaching out to Darrell or attending the annual luncheon. singleparentsms.org

Gather
Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. Inspired by wooded acreage, the Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition and perfect for marrying nature with traditional elegance. Dating back to 1831, the collection features various animals centered by the British Flowers border. This French antique dining room set was chosen for an intimate gathering for four. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware, and mix gold flatware with antique silver water pitchers, delicate salt and pepper shakers and your favorite trays.

INGREDIENTS • 1 1/2 oz- Cucumber & dragon fruit gin • 3/4oz- Toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum • 1/2oz- Lime juice • Topped with ginger beer • Hawaiian black lava salt & black sesame
GARNISH • Small paint brush • Simple syrup • Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with a pinch of black sesame
INSTRUCTIONS Infused Gin: Infuse 1 whole peeled and cut cucumber in gin for a week. Strain the cucumbers out. Add 1 tablespoon of organic dragonfruit powder and mix very well with a whisk. To make the syrup, toast 1/2 cup of black sesame at 350 for 10 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. In a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted black sesame, but not too fine. Add the sesame into one bottle of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum. Let that set for about 2 to 3 days and use cheese cloth to strain out the fine bits of sesame. Juice one fresh lime and strain to remove the pulp.
Cocktail: Paint a strip of simple syrup down a Collins glass. Take a spoon full of Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with black sesame and layer that down where the painted simple syrup was placed. In a shaker tin combine: 1 1/2oz cucumber dragon fruit gin, 3/4oz toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum, and 1/2oz lime juice and shake that up! Fill the painted glass with ice (I use crushed ice) and strain over the ice. Top with your favorite ginger beer (my choice is fever tree ginger beer).
