LIFESTYLE LETTER

We Like Your Style Happy September, friends! Welcome to the Style issue. This month, we celebrate some talented individuals who are helping others in the community discover, display and appreciate their own unique styles. Thank you to artist Shelley Gentry for lending her fittingly titled “Iconic” painting to our cover. Talk about style and grace — “Iconic” — and the artist who created it — epitomize both. Oscar Wilde said, “Behind the perfection of a man’s style must lie the passion of a man’s soul.” All who are featured this month have proven that behind their impeccable personal styles lie people of substance and purpose. We can think of no better time to highlight three individuals who give our publication its unique style — our incomparable contributing photographers. We are honored to spotlight Sarah Bussey Varner, Katie Adkins and Hailey Faria. These skilled storytellers speak volumes through the camera lens, and we are thrilled to share their stories this month in “A Style of Their Own.” As we were planning this issue, we serendipitously met Bethany Morgio, owner of one of The Heights’ newest and coolest boutiques: Round Up Vintage. Like Bethany, Round Up Vintage is fun, fashionable and fabulously multi-layered. Read all about it in “Welcome to Round Up Vintage.” Next, we are delighted to introduce you to Daniel Borrero, owner of GMT Luxury. As a former No. 1 ranked tennis player, Daniel learned the value of hard work and dedication. He applies those same high standards to his business, which connects stylish, premium timepieces to a discerning clientele. Read more in “Crafting Timeless Experiences.” When we consider some of the most stylish — and entertaining — professions, we automatically think of theatrical costume design. This month, we showcase Michael Ciaramitaro, Costume Supervisor for the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, who gives readers a rare glimpse into a day in the life “Backstage at The Rep.” As the song goes, “You’re never fully dressed without a smile.” The staff of Daniel & Jones Orthodontics are dedicated to helping patients of all ages discover the confidence a new smile can bring. Read more about the important work they do in “Smile in Style.” Our personal style is reflected in so many ways — from the clothes and accessories we wear to the spaces in which we live. Trimlight of Central Arkansas is helping homeowners and businesses express their unique style through custom lighting that beautifies and illuminates. Read more in “Lighting Every Season.” We hope you enjoy our special stylish issue and have a wonderful month! STEPHANIE HASBROUCK, PUBLISHER @ L I T T L E R O C KC I T Y L I F E S T Y L E

Sarah Bussey Varner Sarah Bussey Photography

transitioned to focus on branding photography and working with a variety of businesses and creatives. I love helping entrepreneurs and creatives tell their unique stories, but I always enjoy capturing those special family moments, as well.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR PHOTOS CONVEY?

I hope my photos show people as their true, authentic selves. It’s all about capturing those genuine, unscripted moments that reflect who they really are — whether that’s a business owner showing up confidently in their space or a family laughing together on the back porch.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR WORK. WHAT DREW YOU TO PHOTOGRAPHY?

Honestly, I’ve always been the one with a camera in hand — even back in high school with those disposable cameras! When I got to college, I actually started off wanting to be a vet, but I found myself more and more drawn to the art department. That’s where I really fell in love with photography. Over the years, my style has evolved, but that early love for capturing moments and telling stories through images has only grown stronger. I’m all about those rich colors and authentic, candid moments that really show people as they are.

WHAT TYPES OF PHOTOS DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN SHOOTING?

I started out with weddings and family portraits, and I still love working with families and past clients. Over the years, I’ve also

IF YOU COULD GIVE READERS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WHEN IT COMES TO HAVING THEIR PICTURE TAKEN, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Let go of the idea of “perfect.” Some of the best photos happen when you’re relaxed and being yourself. Wear something you feel good in, don’t overthink it and trust your photographer. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR WORK. WHAT DREW YOU TO PHOTOGRAPHY?

I am a documentary photographer and freelance photojournalist. So naturally, my work is based in storytelling. Some of my clients include the Associated Press, the Financial Times (London), and KFF Health News, with photos published nationally and internationally. When I photograph, I am drawn to interesting characters and raw, intimate moments. Recently, I have pulled together all of my passions and experience to create Studio A, a creative services business offering photography, website design, branding, social media and artist mentoring. Clients include artists and small creative businesses.

WHAT TYPES OF PHOTOS DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN SHOOTING?

I like to say that my work straddles the line between documentary and fine art. I use natural lighting and candid portraiture, and I emphasize unique perspectives and angles, often using layers, framing and reflections to show my subjects in their natural environments.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR PHOTOS CONVEY?

I want my photos to connect with any type of viewer, those who are comfortable thinking on a deeper level about art but also those who can simply appreciate a photograph for what it is — a moment in time. I hope that viewers see humanity in my work, even in the images that show no humans at all.

16

I NSP IR E D BY | ARTS + C U LT U RE

IF YOU COULD GIVE READERS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WHEN IT COMES TO HAVING THEIR PICTURE TAKEN, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Approach any photoshoot as experimentation, as a time to play with different looks, angles, expressions, etc. The burden is on the photographer to capture the best version of you. Sometimes those moments come not when you are poised and ready for the photo — sometimes they happen in between shots when you are simply connecting with the photographer. So stay open to the process. Treat the session as a collaboration, not a performance. The most authentic, powerful images often happen in the quiet, unguarded moments — when you’re just being yourself. Hailey Faria Hailey Faria Photography

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR PHOTOS CONVEY?

I want my photos to make you feel something — to understand who someone is, not just what they look like. Whether it’s a family or a brand, I aim to capture the essence, the heartbeat, the why behind it all.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR WORK. WHAT DREW YOU TO PHOTOGRAPHY?

My work is personal — never copy and paste. I see your family, your rhythm, your love, and do my best to honor it. Photography found me in fifth grade and stayed through every season — motherhood, moves, and now, capturing stories across Little Rock and the United States.

WHAT TYPES OF PHOTOS DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN SHOOTING?

That’s what sets me apart — I photograph a little bit of everything. To me, a story is a story, not a category. If it’s honest and full of feeling, I’m there for it.

IF YOU COULD GIVE READERS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WHEN IT COMES TO HAVING THEIR PICTURE TAKEN, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

There’s no perfect time to book a photoshoot. Life will always feel a little messy, a little busy ... but that’s the beauty of it. Don’t wait to lose weight, redecorate or find the ‘right’ season. The right time is now. These aren’t just photos — they’re proof you were here, loving and living in the middle of it all. Bethany Morgio has an affinity for beautiful things with a story to tell. “My dad is an antique dealer and a musician, and my mom is an artist. My whole life I was surrounded by incredible, quality pieces of furniture and décor – even if I didn’t appreciate it as a kid,” she says. Her lifelong exposure to the classic and creative inspired Bethany to launch Round Up Vintage, an upscale fun – and funky — boutique in the heart of The Heights. Bethany is no stranger to the world of retail. She worked in high-end boutiques in Connecticut, Austin and Aspen before moving with her fiancé, Wilson Brandt, to Little Rock. At Round Up Vintage, Bethany masterfully employs her knowledge of luxury with her appreciation for vintage to fill her nostalgic space. “Honestly, everything I chose was first and foremost because I liked it,” Bethany says.

“It is so fun, because you never know what you’re going to find. I really love the concept of heirlooms, and I am hoping people can find their heirlooms here. There are so many people who do not have the time or patience to spend hours upon hours searching through thrift stores, estate sales, auctions … that is where I come in. I have done all the work for them, so they get to come in and pick from the best of the best.” Round Up Vintage also features works from local artisans – from ceramics to bandanas to leather and wood goods created by her fiancé. And one of the best parts? A portion of all of Round Up Vintage’s sales will be donated to a different local charity each month. “This shop is for everyone,” Bethany says. “I see so much potential in this city and room for someone like myself to bring a slightly new vision to the vintage experience.” Round Up Vintage is located at 5606 R Street in The Heights. Be sure to follow the shop on Instagram @round_up_vintage.

CRAFTING TIMELESS EXPERIENCES

Daniel Borrero’s GMT Luxur y Is Dedicated to Connecting Premium Timepieces with Discerning Collectors ARTICLE BY ANNA YANOSICK PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH BUSSEY PHOTOGRAPHY

FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AU T Y

Daniel Borrero was the No. 1 ranked tennis player in Colombia at 18 years old. Today, off the court, he serves exclusive and sought-after timepieces through his selfmade online dealership, GMT Luxury, based in Arkansas. Born and raised in Cali, Colombia, Daniel grew up surrounded by precision. At just 10 years old, he was fully committed to tennis.

“I have been quite emphatic in never stopping caring until I hear or read a positive experience overall.” His father, a sports car and watch collector, influenced his passion for personal expression. “My father always told me, ‘A good impression goes a long way. Dress well, learn to talk less and to listen more.’ I took that seriously as a young adult,” Daniel says. “He has been the person I look up to the most and has guided me to be at the point and place where I am now.” After graduating from the University of Arkansas in Fort Smith with a degree in international business, Daniel professionally coached tennis at The Country Club of Little Rock. Still, he remained captivated by the world of watches. He dedicated months, whether it was an early morning before coaching or during a lunch break, studying an online watch trading course, learning the nuances of dealing high-end timepieces in a competitive market.

“I always want to improve,” Daniel says. “I always want to do better.” In 2023, Daniel bought his first watch and sold it in the same month. GMT Luxury launched soon after and sold 100 watches in its first year, evolving from Daniel’s side-hustle to a full-fledged business. Today, GMT Luxury has bought and sold more than 650 watches, including world-renowned brands like Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Phillippe and Vacheron Constantin. The company specializes in buying, selling, trading, consigning and sourcing watches ranging from $3,500 to $500,000. “I have been quite emphatic in never stopping caring until I hear or read a positive experience overall,” Daniel says. MICHAEL CIARAMITARO SHARES A DAY IN HIS LIFE AS COSTUME SUPERVISOR

Photos from The Rep’s recent production of Hair.

While it’s been said that clothes don’t make the man, when it comes to a theater production, they certainly help define him. At the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Costume Supervisor Michael Ciaramitaro is responsible for creating each character’s unique style. We asked him to share a day in his life — backstage at The Rep. • 9 a.m. - The day begins! I turn on the iron and let it heat up while planning the day ahead. What problems have arisen overnight, and how do I creatively solve them? • 10 a.m. - Staff arrive and notes begin. We dive right into repairing and alterations or continuing with constructing brand-new garments. Sometimes our stock of costumes does not always have the items we need, and so we resort to shopping around the city. CONTINUED >

Photos from The Rep’s recent production of Hair.

• 1 p.m. - Depending on the amount of work and what time costume pieces are needed that day, a full lunch may not always feel achievable. I do, however, make sure that everyone takes a break. • 3 p.m. - The later it gets, the busier it becomes. This part of the day is when a lot of the focused work happens. I spend this time in the shop building the costumes, altering notes and helping with any of the more difficult fabric engineering projects. This is the all-hands-ondeck part of our schedule. • 5 p.m. - By now, we have focused on all the construction and ‘fit’ elements of the costumes, and now we get to transition to working on visual elements (the fun stuff). This includes painting costumes, distressing them to make them look more lived-in, adding embroidery, changing buttons and going through the dye process. We prioritize function over the form (fit versus style). I have always thought of costumes as a ‘second skin’ — another layer of collaboration between the costumes and the performer to allow them to explore the world we are creating as a group. • 6:30 p.m. - For the staff of the shop, their day has come to an end. We finish up by discussing anything major that needs to be done the following day that didn’t get completed, and we oftentimes talk about schedule. Technical rehearsals usually lead to late nights. • 8 p.m. - On an average tech day, this is when we finish with a production meeting. This is the opportunity to address as a group any problems that have come up. These tend to be ‘function’ notes — like someone needing a belt, or a necklace being too long — and aesthetic notes — something might need a little bit more trim or be a completely different color. And immediately after this, I spend time making sure all the lights are off and the doors are locked. Most importantly, I make sure the iron gets turned off.

As orthodontic care has evolved from bulky braces to sleek aligners, it’s never too late to unlock the power of a cared-for smile. And Dr. Alex Jones of Daniel & Jones Orthodontics is transforming smiles at all stages of life across Central Arkansas. “Seeing the confidence that our patients gain from orthodontic treatment is incredibly rewarding,” Dr. Jones says. The clinic was founded in 1990 by Dr. John Daniel, known for his compassionate, patient-centered approach. When Dr. Jones completed his orthodontic residency in 2020, he joined the practice in Little Rock. Eventually, a

Dr. Jones agrees, “Having a smile you feel great about when you walk into a room gives you the confidence to focus on relationships, conversation and your own skills and abilities. It sets the tone for your best self to shine through.” Every smile takes a team, and Dr. Jones says his work wouldn’t be possible without the support of his clinical assistants, scheduling and treatment coordinators, lab technicians and administrative leads. “Our office has a legacy of treating patients and team members with kindness and integrity that began with Dr. Daniel, and I’m honored to be able to continue that every day,” Dr. Jones says. partnership with Dr. Addison Walker, who works in the practice’s Saline County locations, allowed Dr. Daniel to retire in 2024 after 34 years of restoring smiles. Dr. Jones, who knew he wanted to be an orthodontist since sixth grade, is now helping patients navigate modern treatment. “Orthodontic treatment has become more efficient, more comfortable and more aesthetic for both kids and adults,” Dr. Jones says. “Gooey impressions have been replaced by 3D scanners, and we’re able to move teeth using clear aligners like Invisalign or clear brackets that many of our adult patients choose for a less noticeable treatment.” One of those adult patients is Kandi Hughes, an accomplished attorney and community advocate. She says orthodontic care made a real difference in how she carries herself professionally. “I speak often on panels, in meetings and in boardrooms where presence matters,” Kandi says. “Invisalign let me straighten my smile without announcing it to the world and gave me the confidence to smile freely without distraction. The subtlety of the aligners meant I could keep up my professional presence without giving my smile a second thought.” S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/L I T T L E R O C K

LIGHTING EVERY SEASON

TRIMLIGHT OF CENTRAL ARKANSAS ILLUMINATES HOMES & BUSINESSES ARTICLE BY ANNA YANOSICK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET WARLICK, CAMERA WORK PHOTOGRAPHY

If you’ve seen a house that appears ordinary by day but magically wrapped in colorful lights at night, you are not imagining things. That’s the wonder of Trimlight, a permanent outdoor lighting company that is brightening neighborhoods and hearts across Central Arkansas. “We’re a one-time investment for a lifetime of enjoyment,” says Jennifer Rogers, who co-owns Trimlight of Central Arkansas, along with her husband Joe and business partners Sarah and Scott Palmer.

A BRIGHT IDEA

Trimlight was ignited in 2010 after Utah native Ryan Whittaker took down his temporary Christmas lights for the last time in the freezing cold. Determined to find a better way, he developed a low-profile, programmable lighting system, making Trimlight the first company to offer permanent app-controlled holiday lights. In 2022, the Rogers met the Palmers, who had recently moved from Utah. When Sarah asked around at church for help hanging lights, Jennifer volunteered Joe. “We went over and she said, ‘Well, I want red, white and green, but next week I might just want warm, white,’” Jennifer recalls. Joe joked about not coming back, and that’s when Sarah introduced them to the concept of permanent holiday lighting.

MORE THAN HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Soon after, they became just four of 300 authorized Trimlight dealers nationwide. Since then, they’ve helped light up homes and businesses around Central Arkansas, including Leah’s Gymnastics in Benton and Burks Brothers Brewery in Bryant. “You’re not just paying for Christmas lights,” Jennifer says. “You’re paying for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, every holiday, and they’re good for security.” Trimlight uses durable, energy-efficient LED bulbs, and with a patented channel system that blends into the home’s fascia, the lights appear invisible during the day. At night, homeowners can display a mosaic of colors with 16 million to choose from on the Trimlight app. Jennifer’s own son once lit up the house in blue and white for soccer player Lionel Messi’s birthday. One customer used her lights to reflect her wedding colors in honor of her late husband.

“Trimlight’s slogan is Made for all of life’s moments, and I love that we get to be a part of our community’s moments in their lives!” —JENNIFER ROGERS Jennifer says it’s seeing the joy that Trimlight gives the community that makes her work worth every bulb. Every year, they donate a custom light installation to a deserving family. One of their most memorable installs was for a young boy with terminal illness who loves lights. “Lights make everything better,” Jennifer says. “Trimlight’s slogan is ‘Made for all of life’s moments,’ and I love that we get to be a part of our community’s moments in their lives!” For more information, visit trimlightofcentralar.com.
