LIFESTYLE LETTER
Off the Map and Into the Moment We live in a world that values productivity and efficiency, where every moment seems to be mapped out and planned. I’ll admit, I fall into this mindset sometimes too, thinking that the only worthwhile activities are those that can be measured, calculated, and optimized. But the truth is, a life that is too structured is missing something vital— space for exploration. We need room for discovery, for trying new things, for being a beginner. Sometimes, it’s in those unplanned moments where connections are made, memories are created, and trust is built. At the age of 19, I was blessed to study at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The opportunity to learn about different cultures and environments across Europe gave me a greater appreciation for our homeland. It also gave me the chance to create lifelong memories and friendships. Alright, maybe there was a little bit of mischief created too!! In recent months, I’ve been reflecting on how my family spends our time together. Our happiest moments come when we step away from screens and routines. Our "adventures" don’t always involve grand trips, although we did take a trip to Florida two years ago and put all 18 of us in one house —that's a different form of exploration and learning! We get just as much from simple experiences like spending time in the backyard listening to family members share their musical talents while we watch the grandkids dance! This issue is all about giving yourself permission to explore—whether it’s a spontaneous trip, a new hobby, or simply making time for those unstructured moments with the people you love. Let’s make space for the unexpected and the unexplored, and remember that it’s often in these moments that the richest connections are formed. All the best!

Road Trip Ready
Summer is the perfect time to hit the road—whether you’re heading for the lake, the mountains, or just exploring backroads. But before you pack the snacks and cue up your playlist, it’s essential to make sure your vehicle is ready for the trip. We spoke with the team at Menard Automotive in New Lenox to get expert advice on summer car care—and why now’s the time to schedule that pre-trip checkup. Start with the essentials, the team advises: tire pressure and tread, fluid levels, lights, and brakes. “These may seem like small checks, but they go a long way in preventing
14
M UST SE E | AUTO + MARIN E
roadside problems and ensuring safety,” explains owner Sam Menard. As temperatures climb, so does the risk of heat-related car trouble. Common issues include overheating, battery failure, and tire blowouts— especially with road construction in full swing. Menard recommends checking your coolant level, having your battery tested, and inspecting tires closely. Also, make sure your A/C is running efficiently—no one wants to be stuck in traffic without cool air. Smart packing can also save the day. A few of the items staff at Menard Automotive keep in their vehicles at all times? A flashlight, phone charger, water, and a blanket. A first aid kit and extra snacks? Even better. While what’s in your trunk matters, how you drive and care for your vehicle matters more. Fuel efficiency is especially important for long road trips, and it starts with regular maintenance. For long-distance driving, improving fuel efficiency is key—not just to save money, but to reduce wear on your vehicle. Keep up with oil changes, tire rotations, and air filter replacements, and avoid aggressive starts and stops. “Smooth driving really does help your gas mileage,” Sam notes. It’s better for your engine, your wallet, and your overall driving experience.
And when it comes to maintenance, trust makes all the difference. “We treat our customers like family and take pride in doing the job right every time,” he shares. Since opening in 2018, Menard Automotive has become a trusted local fixture—sponsoring youth sports, participating in events like Christmas in the Commons, and supporting Shop Local initiatives. “This community has supported us from the beginning, and we’re proud to give back,” Sam reflects. What truly sets Menard Automotive apart is its transparency and customer-first approach. Rather than upselling services, the team focuses on building long-term relationships. “We never push unnecessary repairs. We’ll explain what’s urgent, what can wait, and help you prioritize,” the team says. Customers can even opt into email or text reminders to stay on track—like having your own personal mechanic in your pocket. Year-round promotions and seasonal specials make Menard Automotive a go-to destination for vehicle care. Whether you’re planning a month-long cross-country road trip or a short weekend getaway, their friendly, knowledgeable team is ready to keep your journey safe and smooth, and help get your vehicle road trip ready—with confidence.

Fishing is popular at Monee Reservoir, Whalon Lake, Lake Chaminwood, and Hidden Lakes Trout Farm, with species like bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, sunfish, pike, and walleye. Whether on the water or shore, these preserves offer a perfect spot for anglers of all ages and skill levels. Birdwatching thrives at McKinley Woods, where visitors can explore woodland trails or watch birds from the Four Rivers Environmental Education Center’s large windows overlooking a feeding area. The Forest Preserve District of Will County focuses on conservation and accessibility by restoring habitats, removing invasive species, and protecting rare ecosystems. Their efforts include habitat restoration, prescribed burns, and endangered species monitoring. With dedicated staff and long-term planning, the District keeps preserves safe, clean, and welcoming—ensuring nature is accessible and enriching for everyone. As Cindy says, “The Forest Preserve District of Will County can be your portal to a better quality of life.” Learn more at www.reconnectwithnature.org.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILL COUNTY FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT
The Forest Preserve District of Will County offers something for everyone—from peaceful nature walks to exciting outdoor adventures. With over 41 preserves to explore, you’ll find scenic hiking and biking trails, fishing spots, campgrounds, birdwatching areas, and a variety of year-round events. Public Information Officer Cindy Cain encourages newcomers to start with nearby preserves and expand as they get more comfortable. One of the best ways to explore is by participating in the Be a Trailblazer challenge. This interactive experience runs from June 5 to August 9 and again from September 25 to November 8. Using the free Goosechase app, participants complete nature-themed missions at different preserves for a chance to win part of over $10,000 in prizes, including weekly random drawings. If you’re looking for a hidden gem, Cindy recommends Raccoon Grove for wildflowers and rare species, and Braidwood Dunes for sandy trails and unique plants. For hiking, visit Hickory Creek for rolling hills, Spring Creek Greenway for shaded woodland trails, or Lake Renwick for lakeside paths.
Wildlife, including bald eagles, can be spotted at all preserves.

AN EXPLORATION OF HOLISTIC HEALTH

“I always say in my previous life I was an engineer,” says Dr. Shannon McMahon, founder of Ancient Roots Acupuncture and Herbs in Frankfort. “I’ve always been interested in the environment and trying to heal the scars of pollution. But when I stumbled into acupuncture as a profession, I knew I had found my true calling.” Her personal connection to natural wellness runs deep. “Growing up, we took a lot of vitamins, didn’t use many medications, and ate healthy fresh foods—which in those days was not as common as it is today.” After earning her doctorate at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago, she set out to create a clinic that felt as healing as the medicine itself. “I didn’t want to just treat so many patients per day—I wanted to take my time and do whatever I felt each person needed to help their body heal. I wanted people to enter a warm and inviting space where they could truly relax into a sleeping or meditative state.” The name Ancient Roots reflects both the longevity and the philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. “The medical acupuncture text that TCM is based on dates back to 2600 BC. Acupuncture has deep roots and has been used effectively for thousands of years. It’s also rooted in Daoist philosophy and our connection to the natural world. I feel deeply that we are all connected—to one another, to nature, and to the cosmos.”

Her approach blends multiple styles of acupuncture in a gentle, accessible way. “The patient generally doesn’t feel the needle being inserted. If they do, it’s like a tiny bug bite. I work on channels and use Hara diagnosis from the Japanese tradition, alongside Traditional Chinese and Korean styles.” Pain is the most common reason patients come to her. “That’s what acupuncture is best known for in the West. But more people are coming for women’s health, autoimmune issues, and mental health support like anxiety or depression.” Treatments often include more than just needles. “I offer Chinese herbal medicine—either in pills, granules, or raw herbs—so I can create personalized formulas that evolve as the patient progresses. I also use moxibustion, cupping, and sometimes medicinal mushrooms. I’m a huge fan of mushrooms like lion’s mane for memory, mood, and immunity.” For Dr. McMahon, the healing journey often brings surprising benefits. “A patient might come in for back pain and notice their sleep improves or they feel calmer overall. I’ve had patients experience emotional releases—especially when
we’re working on areas that hold trauma. A woman with severe jaw tension from past abuse cried when I needled the point, saying she felt something finally release.” She believes acupuncture is not only about symptom relief—it’s about restoring balance. “I always include points to regulate the central nervous system. In today’s world, we’re overstimulated and constantly in ‘fight or flight’ mode. Acupuncture helps bring the body back into balance.” She’s seen a shift in how the local community views holistic care. “Ten years ago, it was hard to find an acupuncturist in this area. Now there are more of us, and more insurance plans are covering it. That’s a real sign of acceptance.” And for those hesitant to try something new, she encourages small, mindful steps. “Sometimes it’s as easy as adding mushroom supplements or exploring gentle movement like Qigong or yoga. People usually come in curious. That curiosity is the beginning of their exploration.” Her intention is simple but powerful. “I hope every person who walks through my door leaves with less pain than they came in with—and a sense of quiet inner peace.”
Acupuncture treats the body, mind, and spirit—it’s not just about healing pain, it's about rediscovering balance and peace.

New Horizons HOW RIGHT CHOICE HOME CARE IS MAKING TRAVEL ACCESSIBLE FOR SENIORS
When you think of exploring new places, your mind might go to young adventurers backpacking across Europe or families road-tripping to national parks. But for Johnathan Newman, co-founder of Right Choice Home Care, travel is just as vital for seniors—especially those who thought their traveling days were behind them. This summer, Right Choice is launching a group trip to California’s wine country designed specifically for seniors, complete with caregivers on hand. It’s more than a vacation; it’s part of a mission to help older adults stay curious, independent, and connected. The idea began with a simple conversation. “We had a client who was wheelchair-bound, and her daughter traveled around the country giving lectures,” Johnathan explains. “I said, ‘If you ever wanted to take your mom with you, we can provide a caregiver.’ That trip worked out beautifully and showed us what was possible.” Years
We want seniors to create meaningful memories, not just bring back souvenirs—travel that truly enriches their lives. 24

later, Right Choice decided to expand this concept into offering full travel experiences for seniors as part of their care. Travel can feel daunting for older adults, especially those with mobility challenges. Often, they hesitate because they don’t want to be a burden on family. “People forget that before needing care, our clients lived vibrant, exciting lives,” Johnathan says. “Travel gives them a chance to reconnect with that spirit—and do it without feeling like they’re inconveniencing loved ones.” The upcoming California trip offers a perfect balance of accessibility, beautiful scenery, and engaging activities, such as learning about winemaking and exploring local culture, designed to suit different ability levels and interests. Travel offers more than sightseeing—it can renew a senior’s sense of purpose. “It’s not just about going somewhere,” Johnathan says. “It’s about being able to say, ‘I’m going on a trip. I’ll be gone for a week.’ That simple statement is so powerful. It reminds our clients and their families that life is still full of possibilities.” Each trip includes cultural and educational elements, from history talks to community interactions, encouraging seniors to stay mentally engaged and connected. Right Choice carefully plans trips to accommodate different comfort levels. “Not everyone wants to squish grapes or hike through vineyards,” Johnathan admits. “But simply experiencing new places, sharing meals, and seeing beautiful landscapes creates lasting memories.” Looking ahead, Johnathan envisions travel becoming a core part of Right Choice’s mission to support senior well-being and independence. “Many seniors traveled extensively when they were younger,” he says. “We’re giving them the chance to do that again with the support they need.” This isn’t about bringing back souvenirs but about creating meaningful experiences and stories that seniors can share with family for years to come. “We want them to come back full of laughter and memories, not just keychains,” Johnathan says. Right Choice’s inaugural California trip is just the beginning of a new way to explore the world— making travel accessible and joyful for seniors who deserve it most.

CREATING YOUR BACKYARD OASIS

With summer in full swing, more families are looking to their own backyards for a little escape—and Aqua Pools in Homer Glen is helping make that happen. By focusing on smart design, easy maintenance, and personalized features, they’re turning everyday yards into incredible getaways. “More and more homeowners are asking for stylish, low-maintenance options to create their own backyard retreat,” says Emily Plaszewski of Aqua Pools. “Automatic pool covers are a big favorite—they help extend swim season and make upkeep so much easier. Salt systems are another hit. They give you softer, smoother water and require less maintenance in the long run. Plus, with smart controls, you can keep tabs on your pool water right from your phone!” Want to add a little more fun and function? Tanning ledges are trending. “They’re perfect for lounging, splashing around with the kids, or even setting up in-water furniture,” Emily adds. “Some people add bubblers and LED lights to take it to the next level. Whether you’re building new or updating your pool, these touches add comfort and serious style.”
Worried your yard might be too small? No problem. “You don’t need a huge backyard to have something amazing,” says Emily. “Spools—part spa, part pool—are great for smaller spaces and still give you that luxury feel.” Aqua Pools also makes it easy to keep your backyard oasis in top shape. “We always tell people to bring in a water sample every week for a free test,” Emily says. “We’ll give you personalized tips to keep everything balanced. Or if you’d rather not worry about it, we can take care of it for you!” One of their favorite projects this season? A custom lazy river that turned a regular backyard into a full-on resort. “It’s not just a pool—it’s an experience,” Emily says. Turns out, your perfect getaway might be just a few steps from your back door.

Krystal Wilson’s journey into business ownership is deeply personal. After 14 years as a massage therapist with a loyal clientele, she felt ready to take the next step and open Body Fountain. But her decision wasn’t just about career growth—it was about family. With a special needs daughter who requires a lot of her time, owning her own business gave Krystal the flexibility to schedule around doctor’s appointments and daily needs. “I also knew that if she ever had trouble finding a job, she’d always have a place here with me,” she says, highlighting how much family means in her work. That heart-centered focus shapes everything at Body Fountain, a wellness center dedicated to helping the body heal naturally from aging, stress, or injuries. The name itself reflects Krystal’s vision. “We want your body to flow as smoothly as a fountain, so you can live without life’s restrictions,” she explains. The center offers treatments aimed at making life easier—whether that means helping clients simplify their beauty routines or regain mobility after injury. “We try to make your life better and easier,” she adds with a smile. One of the latest offerings at Body Fountain is Alma TED, a cutting-edge, non-invasive hair restoration system. Using ultrasound and acoustic sound waves, this treatment stimulates blood flow to the scalp, encouraging hair growth and improving hair quality. Paired with a specially formulated hair care product, Alma TED helps clients achieve thicker, fuller, and shinier hair. Krystal describes it as “an ultrasound-based system that uses sound waves to improve blood flow and support hair growth.” This treatment is particularly helpful for those noticing early signs of hair thinning,
a receding hairline, or increased shedding—conditions often triggered by stress or hormonal changes. “If you’ve noticed your hairline changing or see a lot of hair in the brush or shower, this could really help,” Krystal advises. Clients are often surprised at how comfortable the treatment feels. “You’ll feel a warm sensation from the device and hear a soft ringing, but there are no needles, no discomfort, and no downtime,” she assures. While some clients see improvements after just one session, Krystal recommends a series of three treatments spaced about a month apart to get the best results. Safety is a top priority at Body Fountain, and Krystal speaks from experience. She used Alma TED on her teenage daughter, who lost hair due to radiation and chemotherapy treatments. “She said it felt like a massage and was very comfortable the entire time,” Krystal shares. That personal experience helps her recommend the treatment confidently to others. Ideal candidates for Alma TED are those with fine or thinning hair who want to strengthen what they have and encourage new growth. “If there’s no hair at all, this isn’t the right treatment,” she explains. Krystal chose Alma TED because of its strong reputation and excellent support network. “I’ve worked with the brand before, and their training and support are incredible. I trust the results.” Above all, Krystal wants every client to feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. “I want them to feel confident they are receiving the best service,” she says. “I want clients to walk in and feel at home, knowing they are not just a number but a friend.”
