Healing Happens Here Functional Medicine Labs and Targeted IV Therapy

Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

Evidence-Based Mental Health Therapy

Functional medicine labs show us what’s happening in your body that may be causing anxiety, low mood, or fatigue. With that information, targeted IV therapy gives your body the nutrients they need to repair, boost energy, and support clearer thinking. Together, they create a straightforward, evidence-based way to feel stronger—mentally and physically.

Ketamine-assisted therapy uses a low dose of ketamine to quiet the noise in the mind and loosen stuck thought patterns. This helps people see things more clearly and feel more steady. With medical oversight and guidance from licensed therapists, patients often find real relief from symptoms and the momentum to move forward. It’s a safe, evidence-based way to create meaningful change.

Mental health therapy gives you a clear, grounded space to understand your patterns, steady your emotions, and build real resilience. Through evidence-based approaches, you learn practical tools that improve relationships, reduce anxiety, and strengthen your sense of self. It’s direct, supportive work designed to help you feel more capable and connected day to day.

Restore the Mind. Heal the Body.

no one-size-fits-all Emilee Krupa's Journey to Integrative Therapy Care When most people think of Kanab, Utah, they picture stunning red rock formations, slot canyons, and bright desert skies. But for therapist Emilee Krupa, Kanab is much more: It’s the birthplace of her career. It was there that she first saw the effectiveness of experiential therapy. She got her start as a therapist at a wilderness therapy program for youth on public lands in Kanab. Local Paiute community members taught the youth about plant medicines, survival methods, and traditional skills like carving. “Wilderness therapy shaped me as a therapist,” she recalls. “I worked with some of the best therapists on the planet.” The experimental nature taught her that healing doesn’t always happen sitting on a couch. “It wasn’t talk-therapy driven,” she explains. “Instead of having a 17-year-old sit and talk about their feelings, we’d go hiking. We’d learn to bust a fire. Every kid had to create their own fire kit from sage and from juniper. We didn’t have lighters, flint, or steel.” The kids also carved their own spoons from Rocky Mountain juniper. “It was a really incredible experience that…opened my eyes to more experiential models.” Wilderness therapy wasn’t glamorous. Her clients were primarily teens and young adults struggling with addiction or substance-use disorders. She lived in Las Vegas at the time, and woke up at 3 a.m. every Monday to drive

four hours to Kanab. She’d spend two days living out of a retrofitted early-2000s Ford Explorer—mattress, sleeping bag, and all—before driving back to Vegas. The desert winters were brutal. “I was six months pregnant, sleeping in my car in the middle of a snowstorm. I woke up and literally couldn’t open my car door because so much snow had fallen overnight.” That was the moment she knew she needed to step away and focus on her family. After leaving wilderness therapy, Emilee shifted into tech for a time while raising her two children. But eventually her heart pulled her back to working in mental health—this time through ketamine-assisted therapy, another non-traditional treatment plan. Emilee quickly saw positive results for patients working with ketamine-assisted therapy. In 2023, her life changed again. She had just finished nursing her youngest when she noticed something was wrong. She discovered a

lump, but at the time, she thought it was just a clogged milk duct. When it became painful, however, she went to her doctor, and a biopsy confirmed a diagnosis that no 32-year-old mother expects: invasive ductal carcinoma— breast cancer, with a tumor nearly seven centimeters long. “Everything flipped overnight. I went from working and raising my kids to fighting for my life.” She began an experimental treatment at Huntsman Cancer Institute—a new chemo-immunotherapy combination that shrank the tumor rapidly, but that came with severe side effects. After chemo ended, her health declined sharply. She dropped from about 160 pounds to 100. She cycled in and out of the hospital, put on steroids and a rotating list of medications. But it wasn’t working. A physician finally told her some terrifying news: they’d done everything they could. “At this point, we can only try to keep you alive and hope your body eventually responds.” Then a doctor and friend made an unexpected suggestion: a fecal microbiota transplant (FMT). This procedure is unavailable in the U.S. except for treating the bacterial infection C diff., but internationally, FMT is used more extensively. Emilee contacted a clinic in the UK, but they didn’t offer treatment to recent cancer survivors. However, they recommended a specialist in Germany. Within days, Emilee and her husband were on a plane to Germany to meet a physician renowned for treating complex post-chemo cases. He conducted extensive diagnostic testing: vitamin absorption, mineral levels, heavy metals, pesticides, mold exposure—all the things no one in the U.S. had investigated. He found her body was completely depleted. She underwent FMT, intensive vitamin, mineral, and peptide infusions, NAD therapy, and a personalized protocol aimed at restoring her devastated system. 13

Within three days, she was off the steroids, the same steroids no doctor in the U.S. could taper without her crashing. Soon, she felt better than she had in her entire adult life. She even had enough energy to explore Germany, something unimaginable just weeks before. “That doctor saved my life.” Emilee’s experience inspired her to open Koru Wellness in Lehi. Her mission emerged directly from her recovery, and her motto is “Test—don’t guess.” In other words, she doesn’t experiment, pinpointing the problem before recommending treatments. She’s watched so many patients struggle with depression or anxiety, and sometimes they don’t know why they feel the way they do. At Koru Wellness, treatment can include traditional talk therapy, ketamine-assisted therapy, extensive lab testing to identify nutrient deficiencies, toxic exposures, or other issues, vitamin and mineral IV infusions or injections tailored to patients’ personal lab results, and ear acupuncture (the Five-Needle Protocol), especially effective for trauma, anxiety, sleep issues, and addiction.

14

S ELF CA R E | WEL L NESS

“There is no one-size-fits-all approach,” Emilee says. Her goal is to heal the mind and restore the body, with everything geared to the individual. Sometimes the answer is psychological, but sometimes it’s a deficiency, like a vitamin D deficiency so severe that it explains months of depression during Utah’s dark winters. Unlike many ketamine clinics, Koru’s method includes a licensed therapist in the room for the entire session. Emilee feels ketamine is safe and effective when it’s monitored correctly by medical professionals and a therapist. She believes that people need guidance, connection, and integration—not to be “left alone in a room with an IV.” “We’re not anti-medication, and we’re not anti-holistic medicine either,” she explains. Western medicine saved her life, but extensive testing, FMT treatment, and vitamins and nutrients saved her again when the side effects of the chemotherapy were life-threatening. Emilee no longer sleeps in a Ford Explorer in snowstorms or hikes plateaus with teens learning to carve spoons. She has taken everything she’s learned and created a wellrounded care program. She is a mother, a survivor, a clinician, and an advocate for integrative therapy care.

AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

The New Frontier of Health

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times

16

I NSP IR E D BY | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED

Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

S u i te d to Eve r yo n e’s G o a l s MARCI HOOTON DISCUSSES HOW SHAKE IT EMBODIES EVERYTHING SHE LOVES

ARTICLE BY ASHLEY PETERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELI HANSEN

EAT R IGH T | FO O D + BEVE RAGE

Marci Hooton and her husband Wade bought Shake It, a protein shake cafe, in early 2025. They’d been loyal Shake It customers since it opened its doors in 2022, and had been working with the owners to open a new location, when the Lehi location became available. The owners wanted it to go to someone who loves Shake It as much as they do, so Marci and Wade took over. Marci’s first business, Cakes By Marci Marie, started through her love for creating beautiful birthday cakes for her kids. Before her kids entered school, she and her daughter would watch YouTube cake-making videos, and Marci thought, “I could do that.” Marci utilized the recipe collection of her mom and grandma and was able to release her creativity. “It evolved into something much bigger than I ever thought.” As Marci has moved into the fitness scene, she’s found interest in running triathlons, weight-lifting, and cycling. “My love for delicious flavors and healthy fuel is what evolved perfectly into owning Shake It.” Shake It’s shakes are not only delicious, but they help you reach your fitness goals! Each shake is 200-250 calories, with 25 grams of protein, 20+ vitamins and minerals, 13 grams of carbs, and 9 grams of sugar. Living a healthy lifestyle starts with smarter choices. Shake It offers delicious, all-natural protein shakes, with gluten-free, and nut-free options, to help you meet your health goals. “It’s everything I embody and everything that I love—the vibe, the flavor, the fuel.” Shake It can help with health goals including weight loss, strength training, protein intake, and just wanting delicious fuel. “People love that they can get a treat and

still stay within their goals. People young and old need more protein and less sugar, that’s why Shake It is the perfect stop for anyone!” Marci and her family love to come up with new shake flavors. “I’ve brought my kids into the store and we play around with the flavors and create new things. I like when customers come in and say, ‘Do you think you could make something like this?’ It’s fun to see if we can pull something together.” Marci says she’s enjoyed working with her husband and seeing their strengths work together. “Owning a business has made our whole family feel like we have a purpose and gives us something to work on together. It’s a sense of family bonding.” Shake It is a place of community. Marci wants people to feel comfortable when they come in, like they’re family and they’re being taken care of. “It’s a mom-andpop shop, not a franchise. I don’t want them to feel like they’re just another number.” She wants to keep the vibe happy and positive, with a mutual relationship of caring, where people want to support Shake It, because Shake It supports them. The Shake It team truly cares about their customers, and they put a lot of effort into the feeling you get when you come into the store. Shake It suits everyone’s health goals—teeny tiny to elderly. It’s good fuel. Head in to Shake It to try Marci’s all-time favorite Shake It flavor, Derby Pie, or one of the dozens of other delicious flavors, like Strawberry Coconut, Pistachio Almond, Peanut Butter Banana, or Birthday cake. You can also enjoy their other offerings, including protein coffee, protein hot chocolate, protein soda, and protein balls!

JESSICA CORMIER ON THE BENEFITS AND STIGMAS OF MEDICINAL BOTOX ARTICLE BY ASHLEY PETERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA GILBERT

24

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

Jessica Cormier, the owner of My Tox Shop, has worked as a nurse for seven years, including in the neuro trauma unit and the surgical ICU. She currently works in the medical ICU, helping with evidence-based nursing research. Jessica started working with botox after working through the pandemic altered the way she saw medicine and made her fearful. She asked herself “What have you done in your life and what do you want?” When she turned 29 in April of 2020, she decided to do something every month that scared her, including a metalsmithing class, and a woodworking class, where she made a charcuterie board. She had been struggling with migraines for a long time, and had heard that Botox can help, but she was scared of needles. Because of her goal to do one scary thing a month, she tried Botox, and it was a game changer, helping not only her migraines, but also her depression. “The craziest thing was the interaction between my patients, my coworkers, and me. Because my muscles were more relaxed, I wasn’t always making a concerned face and scowling behind my mask, and it helped establish more trust. It changed our interactions.” Jessica’s year of doing things that scared her led to her starting My Tox Shop. “I didn’t ever think I’d start a business, but it was part of that year, so I did it.” CONTINUED >

25

Medicinal Botox is often stigmatized. “So many people have biases, which is reasonable. If they’re willing to listen, I can tell them all the cool things about it. It’s one of the most studied medications and very safe. It’s a tool.” Botox was originally used in ophthalmology, for eye muscle disorders and spasms, and pediatrics, largely for patients with cerebral palsy. The use of Botox in aesthetics started in the 1990s when doctors noticed that a side effect of the medical use was wrinkle reduction. Now, Jessica says, “It’s the gold standard for migraines.” Botox softens the movement of your muscles until it wears off, making regular treatments useful for migraines, jaw-clenching, muscle spasms, overactive bladder, excessive sweating, and more. Jessica started My Tox Shop more than a year ago. “I didn’t have resources. I just started going to people’s houses. It had to be part-time.” The momentum got bigger when Jessica went into the community and did vendor events. She met her business partner at The World Strength Games. He suggested that instead of being competitors, they should help each other, which perfectly fit into Jessica’s goals for My Tox Shop: to serve the community, connect, and help each other grow. My Tox Shop is in a salon suite

now, but Jessica’s hope is to start her own practice and educate more nurses. “This is way past the goal I had–just to start. One reason I started My Tox Shop is for my baby. I wanted a way to make money without the difficult 12-hour shifts at the hospital, because I have an autoimmune disease. I want to make a difference in my child’s life and spend more time with him and outside that traumatizing zone.” Jessica also wanted to give back to the community, creating education and access. “Some people see people as dollar signs, but being raised in critical care, everyone has a gown on–homeless or famous–you’re all the same. Everyone needs dignity, respect, support.” Jessica knows that, even after learning about the medicinal benefits, some people still won’t be okay with Botox. “That’s fine. We have other ways to treat things. For migraines, we have IV therapy. A lot of these things I learned in the emergency department and critical care.” There’s a lot of fear and gatekeeping about both medicinal and aesthetic Botox. “My Tox Shop is my rebellion against that. I’m creating safety, education, and accessibility.” If you’re looking for some relief from medical issues, look no further than My Tox Shop!

"It’s one of the most studied medications and very safe. It’s a tool.” — Jessica Cormier

GETTING YOUR

LIFE

B AC K

Tanya Pusey has an affinity for the human brain, with a thorough understanding of how it works. Pusey, a licensed clinical social worker of nearly 30 years, is the owner of Riverton Counseling—a practice she’s operated since 2018—that provides hope and healing through memory-based therapy.

Pusey always wanted a profession where she could help people navigate deep and troubling emotions. Those aspirations drew her to clinical counseling and therapy work. “I absolutely love doing trauma work, because I can see what happens when people get to the other side of that,” she said. Pusey earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Utah State University, then continued her education at the University of Utah, where she got her Master of Social Work degree. Pusey’s expertise covers a wide range of issues, including trauma, anxiety, depression, abuse, grief, and pornography addiction, as well as providing parental and marital relationship therapies. Riverton Counseling specializes in therapeutic methods like Brainspotting, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) to help reduce the emotional impact for people recalling a disturbing experience. “I know that your brain can update and change. And so I want to make sure that people have that sense of hope,” Pusey said.

BRAINSPOTTING

Brainspotting, according to its website, is based on the idea that “where you look affects how you feel.” Because the eyes are closely connected to the brain’s processing systems, eye position can influence emotional responses. The method uses specific points in the visual field to help locate where these unprocessed traumatic experiences are stored. By holding the gaze on a particular spot, the brain is guided to access and deeply process the underlying trauma, supporting its release and resolution.

EMDR

EMDR is a therapy that helps with PTSD and other issues by using side-to-side eye movements to change how intrusive memories are stored in the brain. This reduces emotional intensity and reactions to triggering words, images or places. The treatment has garnered worldwide attention in recent years, and is recognized by the World Health Organization and Department of Defense as an effective form of treatment for trauma and other disturbing experiences. ART

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is considered a faster, more structured version of EMDR, offered at Riverton Counseling. It helps clients replace negative images and sensations with positive ones, without requiring them to share detailed information about past events. This technique typically only requires a single two-hour session. While none of these methods are new, many people are unaware of the role their brain plays in recovering from trauma, and haven’t explored therapeutic methods such as those. Not all traumatic experiences are created equal. Whether it’s surviving a serious car crash, domestic or sexual abuse, military combat, chronic bullying, childhood neglect, among other events, intrusive thoughts of the past and alter a person’s ability to function in the present. Pusey says each method of therapy she specializes in leans into the concept of neuroplasticity, which involves structural and functional changes to the brain. “Your nervous system is kind of hijacked, and you’re back then and you’re not able to have a healthy reaction in the moment, because you’re reacting to that past stuff. So if we can go in and update and kind of rewire your brain with that neuroplasticity, with EMDR, ART, or Brainspotting; it can genuinely feel like someone has been given their life back,” Pusey said. For people of various age groups, genders, and cultures who experience different types of trauma, with thoughts and feelings that seem like they’ll never go away—Pusey said it can make a person feel helpless, but the modalities offered at Riverton Counseling can begin a path to healing. “We can’t take away the memory, but we can take away all the trauma elements that your body and nervous system and brain are kind of reacting to,” she said. Pusey encourages people wanting to heal from trauma, anxiety, mental health issues and other cognitive disruptions to consider the services at Riverton Counseling, located at 10623 Redwood Road, Suite 101, in South Jordan.
