Investing in What’s Important

April’s theme, investment, isn’t just about finances. Spring is the perfect time to take stock of what’s important to you, and invest in them. Spend time with your family, reach out to friends, connect with your neighbors, work on your health, learn about something new, take an opportunity to care for yourself, and take steps toward your goals. This month, we have articles about investing in your home ("Giving It Your All" and "How to Design a Relaxing Space"), in your car ("Garrin's Automotive Keeps Lehi Rolling"), in your finances ("5 Best Investment Books to Read"), and in your relationships ("Family Time is the Best Investment"). We also have an exclusive interview with Tim Tebow, where he discusses investing in the MVP–not “Most Valuable Player”, but “Most Vulnerable People”.
Enjoy our investment issue, and remember to invest in what matters to you.

FAMILY TIME is the Best Investment

These simple, yet intentional ideas can make the best memories.
EAT DINNER TOGETHER AS A FAMILY.
This meaningful time around the table is where connections happen. Let everyone share good moments from the day or something they struggled with. Create a jar of conversation starters, exchange giggles and cook up something delicious.
CREATE SURPRISES
Everyone likes to feel special – and surprised. The littlest things make the biggest impact: A backyard picnic; a sleepover in an indoor fort; an after-school ice cream treat; a bathroom spa day.
CREATE FAMILY TRADITIONS
Build weekly or monthly traditions –movie nights with popcorn, board game marathons, a gratitude jar, evening bike rides, living room dance parties, even a family book club to discover old favorites and new reads.
EXPRESS LOVE AND GRATITUDE
In busy seasons, it’s easy to forget to let a loved one feel appreciated and thought of. Tuck a hand-written note in a lunch box or give an unexpected hug; spend time sharing what you’re thankful for about them.
KEEP GENERATIONS LINKED
Consider Sunday meals with grandparents or weekly phone calls if distance separates. Invite them to share their childhood stories and treasured memories. Start a yearly family scrapbook filled with favorite photographs and vacation souvenirs.

giving it their all
When they can steal some time from their day-to-day life, Ryan and Kristen Hale head for the highway; they enjoy exploring Utah’s glorious scenery and having adventures with their rescue dog, Louie. But most days, their focus is closer to home. They’re all in on their business—and their business is concrete.
Ryan’s been pouring concrete since he was seventeen, and he’s good at it. For years, colleagues encouraged him to start out on his own. “A lot of people were telling me, ‘Once you start your own business, let me know.’”
Almost twenty years later, in 2023, that idea became a reality. “I just couldn’t see myself working for anybody else at my age and with how much experience I had. I'd wanted to start my own company for a long time.”
Ryan quickly realized that running a business required far more than just knowing all about concrete. “I didn’t realize how much communication it was going to take to run a business,” he admitted.
That’s where his wife Kristen came in. Due to her 15 year career as a graphic designer, Kristen had the exact skills Ryan needed for All Hale Concrete. Initially, Kristen helped Ryan from the sidelines by putting together the All Hale website, handling bids, and assisting with the business's administrative side.
“I come from the marketing world in corporate,” she said. But when she felt ready to
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE HUBBARD PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE FERGUSON
move on from her company, she made a major decision. “I ended up…quitting my job, and so we just joined forces instead of me going back to corporate.”
Kristen’s involvement quickly became essential. She took over communication, bidding, marketing, hiring, and organization— areas Ryan openly acknowledges were not his strengths.
Their partnership is built on shared standards. “We’re very meticulous with how everything goes from the prepping to the finished work to cleaning up the jobs,” Kristen said. Ryan, she added, “is a perfectionist.”
Their company name reflects both a sense of humor and a deep respect for the material they work with. “Concrete demands you,” Kristen said. “Once you start pouring it, there’s no backing out. It’s do-or-die time.” All Hale is also a play on their last name and a lighthearted nod to the nature of concrete itself. Ubiquitous and essential, concrete is the second-most-used material in construction

It's All Hale
after water. Fittingly, it has become both their livelihood and their metaphor. It requires full commitment and respect—there’s no halfway point. That reality fuels both their healthy respect for the material and their passion for its artistry.
“Everywhere we walk, Ryan pays attention to the concrete and critiques it,” Kristen said. ”He's like, ‘Oh, this sidewalk–they messed this up here.’ So yeah, it just rules our lives.”
All Hale’s name is also a clear signal of who you’ll see on the job. Because they take on only a limited number of projects each year, Ryan Hale is present on every one of them; it’s all Hale. He doesn’t farm the work out to other companies–he has his own crew.
His hands-on approach throughout every project means closely overseeing measurements, prep work,

and execution. “We do a lot of shed pads and garage pads—they need to be square and with the right measurements,” he said. “I’m there making sure everything’s done right.”
One non-negotiable for them is reinforcement. “We put road base and rebar in everything we pour,” Ryan said. “A lot of guys don’t really think that you need to put rebar in stuff, and I strongly disagree.”
They also see a clear distinction between their company and much of the competition. Ryan described the concrete industry as falling into a few categories: unlicensed side work, large general contractors who subcontract concrete work out, and companies like theirs.
“We just do concrete,” he said. “That’s our focus.”
Kristen, coming from outside the industry, was struck by how disastrous it can be when companies cut corners. “There is so much that can go wrong and does actually go wrong,” she said. They often encounter customers dealing with cracked, sinking, or crumbling concrete from previous work that wasn’t done properly.
CONTINUED >
That reality has shaped their approach. They aim to be transparent, thorough, and dependable. “We’re trying to be the most trusted contractor out there,” Kristen said. “Someone who’s going to give you a good, decent price but also do it the right way.”
For both of them, the most rewarding part of the business comes at the end of a job.
“What really keeps me going is just seeing a job completed and cleaned up and done,” Ryan said. Kristen agreed, pointing to both the physical transformation and the emotional payoff. “It’s cool to see the customer happy,” she said. It’s especially fun for the Hales when a happy customer leaves a review that reflects the care and effort behind the work.

“A patio isn’t just a patio,” she added. “It’s a place where they’re going to have barbecues and create all these memories.”
The business is demanding, but they find meaning in building it together. “It gives us a good purpose,” Kristen said. “We really care about it and want to make it grow.”
For Ryan and Kristen, their all-in philosophy—hands-on, detaildriven, and deeply personal—is what sets them apart. They’ve built their business on trust, integrity, and the belief that doing it right the first time is the only way worth doing it.
“We’re not willing to risk an unhappy customer,” Kristen said. “We just put our all into it.”

Redefining MVP: TIM TEBOW’S LIFE BEYOND FOOTBALL
An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle

ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.

Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.
A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.
Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?
A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.
Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?
A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.
Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?
A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.
“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”
Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?
A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”
Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.
This conversation barely scratches the surface. Tim goes deeper into the moments that rattled him, the joys of fatherhood, and one story he has never shared publicly until now. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

GARRIN’S AUTOMOTIVE KEEPS LEHI ROLLING
THE FAMILY-RUN SHOP ALSO FOCUSES ON GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
For nearly two decades, Garrin’s Automotive has kept drivers on the road by keeping their vehicles in working order through various maintenance and repair needs.
The auto repair shop, located in the heart of Lehi’s Main Street, opened in 2009, but husband-and-wife duo owners Garrin and Stefanie Ellis said there were some twists and turns along the way.
ARTICLE BY CURTIS BOOKER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELI HANSEN
Garrin Ellis grew up on a farm and has been working on cars since he was a teenager.

Garrin and Stefanie got married while living in Texas in the late 1980s. They moved to Utah so Stefanie could attend college at Brigham Young University.
Garrin had been working as a certified master technician in Texas, performing everything from inspections, repairs, and vehicle maintenance work. He landed a job at a Toyota dealership in Orem, where he worked for 18 years.
“I worked on [Toyotas] so long that I knew them like the back of my hand. And so it was easy to diagnose and repair Toyotas,” Garrin said.
But Garrin said that he eventually wanted to get out of the corporate manufacturer side of the industry.
He left the job in 2006, and along with a former co-worker from the Toyota dealership, the Ellises opened their own business near the I-15 American Fork Main Street exit where they sold and repaired vehicles.
“And then when Pioneer Crossing was going to be built, UDOT came in and said, ‘we're using eminent domain and we're taking your property’, so we had to make a decision about] where to go and what to do,” Stefanie recounted.
Garrin and Stefanie said the business had been suffering, partly due to the “Cash for Clunkers” program, a federal initiative enacted under former President Barack Obama to encourage consumers to turn in their old cars in exchange for rebates that could be used towards purchasing a new vehicle.
The couple decided to split with their business partner and open a new shop with a focus solely on repairs.
In June 2009, they opened Garrin’s Automotive. Stefanie said for about the first year of the shop's opening, Garrin was sort of a one-man operation, but they made it work until they could afford to hire employees.

“We literally just hung a shingle and we had some customers that had followed us from Toyota and also from our partnership,” she said.
Garrin said one of the first early challenges he faced in opening his own auto repair shop was transitioning from working on a single manufacturer to dealing with various makes and models—and eventually electric vehicles (EVs)
“Once you get away from the corporate [manufacturers] and go independent, you're working on everything,” Garrin said. “So I was just doing everything I could to learn about the other manufacturers; to learn about the domestics; about Chevy, about Ford, Chrysler, about Nissans and Hondas.”
Garrin said an ongoing challenge is navigating a shortage of skilled technicians, so Garrin’s typically ends up training their own.
‘We have a tech right now that has just turned into an awesome tech that we've just trained, mainly from the ground up,” Garrin said.
As with any business, Garrin and Stefanie said building trust with customers is paramount, so transparency and honesty are key to maintaining their customer trust and satisfaction.

“I think it's extremely important, especially as a woman,” Stefanie said. “They need to be able to trust that everything's done right; that we're not trying to sell work they don't need. You have to build that trust one interaction at a time.”
Garrin’s uses digital inspections to provide detailed information about the condition of a customer’s vehicle, helping the technicians prioritize repairs and showing exactly what needs to be fixed.
To prevent the need for repairs, Garrin and Stefanie both stress the importance of investing in good upkeep of a person’s vehicle through regular maintenance and checkups.
“I think maintenance helps to [create] peace of mind that you have a good running vehicle,” Stefanie said.
The Ellises have been residing in Lehi since 2001 and say they cherish their time living in the city. They love participating in
local events like the Lehi Round Up parade and Trick-or-Treat on Main Street through Garrin’s Automotive.
“We just love Lehi and all that it represents and stands for, and as much growth as we've had. We just love being here,” Stefanie said.
The Ellises also say education is important to them. They enjoy supporting various programs and activities at both Lehi and Skyridge High Schools.
“We support a lot of things with the high schools, with athletics, with ballroom dance [and] a lot of different things,” Garrin said.
The Ellises also encourage customers to donate to support local charities. This past Christmas season, Garrin’s hosted a Fill Santa’s Sleigh event, benefitting Toys for Tots and Tabitha’s Way Local Food Pantry. When every bin was filled with donations, the Ellises doubled their personal donation from $500 to $1,000!

HOW TO DESIGN A RELAXING SPACE
ARTICLE BY EMILY FOSTER INTERIORS

INVESTING IN HOME DESIGN CAN GIVE YOU A PEACEFUL SANCTUARY WHERE YOU CAN ESCAPE FROM THE STRESSES OF DAILY LIFE. SO GO AHEAD, TAKE THE PLUNGE AND REVAMP YOUR LIVING SPACES – IT’S WORTH EVERY PENNY!
invest inyour living space
There are many things that can help a room feel relaxing, but let’s keep it simple and focus on my top three. I would say that one must incorporate good lighting, great textures, and a decluttered space to truly get the cozy vibes. Let’s tackle each.
GOOD LIGHTING
It’s imperative that there are multiple sources of light in a space. Rooms need a soft warm light, so I always like to use a light bulb between 2,700k and 3,000k. Also, all lights should have the same temperature light bulb to avoid clashing. It’s not enough to just have recessed or pendant lighting. I add a table or floor lamp to a space to truly have ambient light. Candles are a must for me. They can be scented candles (an extra way to add relaxation) or I like to use remote control tapered candles, so I don’t have to worry about cleaning up wax later.
GREAT TEXTURES
Textures are seen in toss pillows, rugs, draperies, throw blankets and furniture upholstery. Textures add color, pattern and visual interest. I like to use at least three different textures to help a room feel lived-in and welcoming.
DECLUTTERING
So many times, a person thinks that every nook and cranny and every wall need to have something, and this is not the case. A decluttered space is actually more relaxing because overcrowding of items doesn’t quiet the mind. Decluttering a space can be overwhelming, I get it, so just do it in stages. You’ll love the outcome when the room is tidy, organized and you are only surrounded with what brings you joy.
