FEEL YOUNGER AT THE Institute of Facial & Oral Surgery

DR. ARORA HELPS ROLL BACK THE CLOCK FOR CONFIDENCE AND HEALTH.

When Dr. Balvant Arora treats a patient, his involvement in their health continues long after he completes the surgery. With liposuction and tummy tucks as some of the most popular cosmetic services requested at the Institute of Facial and Oral Surgery in Lansdowne, Dr. Arora, M.D., MBA, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, collaborates with patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle long after their treatments. “By and large, the majority of us want to look good and feel better, and feeling better has a big component of wellness,” Dr. Arora said. He encourages patients to eat right, exercise, and take supplements as necessary to ensure they maintain the effects they want post-surgery. “We look at what kind of food to eat,” he said. “You are what you eat, and you are what you eat now. The E in eat means energy—which you get in food and spend in exercise and daily living. The A is for air, how we breathe, and T can mean thought, where meditation comes into play, having a positive outlook and optimism. This needs to be done continuously to be able to handle stress well. All aspects end up making the individual feel well. We incorporate this from the first time a patient comes in, to set into motion healthier practices, and patients continue to get support after surgery.” CONTINUED >

Not all interventions at the Institute of Facial and Oral Surgery come in the form of surgery, although a fully equipped operating room on site keeps treatments cost-effective and convenient. Dr. Arora also offers a wide variety of noninvasive solutions, from supplements to bioidentical hormones and other procedures. In fact, the constant evolution of cosmetic treatments is one of the reasons he went into the field. “It treats the patient from head to toe and everything in between, and there are a lot of innovations that continue to come into the field,” he said, naming the advent of lasers and various devices and the development of endoscopic surgery with small incisions. “Lifespan has increased, and people’s attitudes have changed,” he said. “How they look and feel matters more to them than age as a number.” Dr. Arora was certified as a surgeon in India before moving to the United States, where he re-certified. When he meets a patient, he said, his first consideration is whether the surgery they’re requesting is indicated and whether they have realistic expectations. They also must be healthy to undergo the procedures. Surgically, liposuction brings him the most patients. But the main trend he sees is for noninvasive procedures, such as botox, fillers, chemical peel, laser resurfacing, and use of devices that build muscle and dissolve fat. He discusses a procedure in detail with a patient, indicating to them how it will look at various stages after surgery. “When I take their history, I ask about [their feelings and emotions surrounding the procedure] and

make sure that they will handle the transformation very well,” he said. For those who do undergo surgery, he said, their lives are often transformed. “I’ve had individuals whose lives have changed due to reconstructive or cosmetic surgery,” he said. “Their personality and outlook changed, and they feel more productive across the spectrum.” One patient who had skin and fat removed from the abdomen was able to increase activity levels and lose even more weight. “They were able to get into better shape and move forward in life with a healthier outlook,” he said. He gives patients an opportunity to jumpstart their wellness journey and incorporate it into their daily lives to stay healthy and rejuvenated for ever-increasing lifespans. The Institute of Facial and Oral Surgery in Lansdowne was founded 17 years ago by Drs. David Moose, M.D., D.D.S., and Suketu Patel, M.D., D.M.D. Dr. Moose and Dr. Patel are board-certified oral and maxillofacial, cosmetic and reconstructive surgeons, with Dr. Patel specializing in orthognathic surgery (a surgical procedure that corrects irregularities of the jaw bones, realigning the jaws and teeth to improve the way they work). They also offer a medical spa, where Master Aesthetician Gaynor Kelly offers laser treatments, pro-fractional laser, SkinTyte, Ultherapy, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion.

“The majority of us want to look good and feel better, and feeling better has a big component of wellness.”

LOUDOUN THERAPEUTIC RIDING’S

golden anniversary

14

G IV IN G BAC K | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

COMMITTED SUPPORTERS HAVE TOUCHED MORE THAN 13,000 LIVES OVER THE LAST FIVE DECADES AND COUNTING.

As executive director of Loudoun Therapeutic Riding, Laura Smith witnesses the transformative impact of horses on individuals struggling with physical, emotional, or intellectual challenges daily. She recalls a young woman who’d had a brain injury, a former rider who arrived in a wheelchair. Smith helped her get into a cart and learn to drive. On her first day, the young woman drove for about 10 minutes, and when she returned the following week, her mother asked Smith what they had done in the session. “Her handwriting had gotten down to half the size that it had been because she was regaining her fine motor skills from holding the reins,” Smith said. “She wasn’t even thinking about it; she was just following the instructions.” The next week, she was driving the cart 30 minutes and could put her hands together again. She was inspired to try new things and return to her former passions, like playing the piano. She was getting her life back. “That was beautiful,” Smith said. “I wasn’t as familiar with the benefits of driving, but that was profound.” As LTR, the oldest organization of its kind in Virginia, celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala at Salamander Resort in Middleburg in November of 2024, they were also looking ahead to the next 50 years. Founded in Leesburg in 1974 by Leonard Warner and Barbara Baird, LTR has constantly evolved in response to challenges and opportunities. Beginning in partnership with the Loudoun County Public School system, the Loudoun 4-H Riding Club and the Agricultural Extension Department at Virginia Tech, with support from Paul Mellon, LTR offered lessons at facilities around the county for decades before realizing the dream of their own facility in 2021 in Lovettsville, with an indoor arena and 25 acres. “We’re one of the only centers that has 25 acres solely dedicated to equine services, and our next 50 years will be about expanding our programs to fully utilize them,” Smith said. 15

A CULTURE OF COMMITMENT

LTR has attracted loyal staff, volunteers, and donors, people like Joanne Hart, who became executive director in 1984 and served for more than 30 years. Hart recruited Kathy Blaine, who works as program director and has been with the organization for 31 years. Herd manager and lead instructor Debbie Gerbich has worked with LTR for more than 20 years. Part of Hart’s legacy includes establishing a partnership in 2007 with North Spring Behavioral Healthcare, a pediatric psychiatric treatment center in Leesburg, positioning LTR to address mental as well as physical needs. In 2011, she started the Equine Services for Heroes program helping veterans. Today, thanks to a grant from 100WomenStrong, LTR will also be expanding that program to include first responders. “Therapeutic riding itself has evolved from focusing on helping children and adults with disabilities, primarily autism, intellectual disabilities, as well as cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Things have shifted more into mental health,” Smith said. “More people are coming in with anxiety and depression, so our programming is evolving. While we’ve done therapeutic and adaptive riding or driving, we’ve also expanded into equine-assisted learning and equine-assisted psychotherapy.”

Smith insists that they couldn’t have served more than 13,750 participants without the help of the Loudoun community, which has evolved alongside LTR and has provided more than 5,000 volunteers. “This has been a very generous and kind community,” Smith said. “All 115 horses we’ve had over the years have been donated, and the majority of the budget, 75 to 80 percent, is from donations.” One of the oldest charities in Loudoun, and once one of few charities, it’s now part of a landscape of about 3,100 charities in the county, Smith said. “We have a tremendous number of volunteers who have been with us 30-some years,” Smith said. “I’ve worked at other riding centers, but I’ve never witnessed a place where there are so many people who have been here for such a long time.”

THE NEXT 50 YEARS

The physical benefits of therapeutic riding include improved balance, coordination, core strength, and proprioception, the body’s sense of its own motion and position. “Riding simulates walking, so for people with spinal cord injuries or who are learning to walk again, it reminds the brain how to walk, which is an amazing thing,” Smith said. Cognitively, it requires riders to plan where they are going and follow directions. This develops spatial awareness and mental processing. Emotionally, she said, the horse is accepting and can help lower stress. “Patting a horse releases oxytocin, which helps you to relax and bond,” Smith said. And mentally, it grows confidence, teaching students to lead, to relate, and to self-regulate. In equine-assisted learning, Smith explained, “The learning is learning about horses but also about yourself with horses. Horses are a mirror and reflect things back to us. They always model appropriate social behavior, and they connect with us and accept us, and we’re finding this happens on the ground as well as in the saddle or in a cart.” At LTR, an equine-assisted learning program called Horse Powered Learning enables students to learn about themselves in the process of discovering horses. Equine-assisted psychotherapy requires a partnership with a mental health professional, which LTR has formed. “As a nation facing a mental health crisis and also certainly Loudoun County, we’re evolving and adapting our offerings to include more programming that addresses mental health needs in our community,” she said. A Silver Spurs program offers opportunities for seniors, including groups from memory care units. “We had a darling lady who celebrated her 97th birthday with us because she wanted to ride a horse again,” Smith said. “We have had a couple of seniors who used to ride and had a stroke, or something happened that set them back a little, so we do try to cater to horse people who are trying to experience riding once again.” LTR’s programs touch on all these benefits, and a newly established endowment with the Community Foundation of Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties will help them continue to serve the area for the next 50 years.

“This is not a place where people are judged. They are accepted, loved, and encouraged to do and be their best and live their best lives.” —Laura Smith “We are growing, and our capacity is increasing with this facility, so we have opportunities for people who want to ride,” Smith said. Even as they’ve accumulated accolades like becoming the first premier accredited center with PATH in 1995 and earning recognition from the Equus Foundation for their 50 years of service, LTR continues to strive for excellence, and the results of a recent survey helped define why they’ve lasted so long and attracted such loyalty. “What came back [from the survey] is that it’s really our core values that distinguish us from other centers,” Smith said. “Our core values are love, trust, and respect. We are a center of inclusivity; this is not a place where people are judged. They are accepted, loved, and encouraged to do and be their best and live their best lives.” To learn more or become a volunteer, go to ltrf.org.

SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

Quinoa BREAKFAST Bars

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 tablespoons chia seeds • 2/3 cup raisins • Optional: chocolate chips as desired • Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc. Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

27

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each. 2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice. 3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite. 4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy! Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.* These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.

Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed. Ingredients • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter) • 1 cup almond flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Chocolate chips as desired Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.

Frozen PEANUT BUTTER Bites

Danger ahead: this snack is amazing. It’s the easiest of the bunch and also satisfies a sweet tooth craving. This can be whipped together in just 5 minutes and makes just a small amount. Feel free to take creative liberty here with your amounts, but if you make it to this recipe, they are around 90 calories per bite.

Sleep Disorders Are a Major Problem and We can Help!

In order to be your best, you have to sleep your best. Whether it is consultation regarding lifestyle changes or testing for vitamin D-3 deficiency, we are here for you. We can also assess your need for a CPAP, or another device to help you sleep and fight sleep apnea. A much better approach to treating apnea is the Panthera device. It is made by a dentist and brings your chin forward (just like in doing CPR) to open the airway. It is very effective and easy to wear. For most people it does the job as well as a CPAP and in some cases even better. There are many other ways to deal with apnea- most of these are surgical-but the above ideas are simple and generally quite easy to implement for most people.
