LIFESTYLE LETTER
Summertime and the Livin’ is Easy! For a while this spring, it seemed like summer would never get here. Now the rain clouds have parted, bringing forth all the sunshine and good times we've been waiting for! Fresh cut grass is one of my favorite smells. It just brings me back to summer as a kid and the endless possibilities of fun and adventure. As adults, we don't really have the same freedom from responsibility that three months of no school brings, but the concept lives on. Vacation. More time with the family. Sun, warm weather and pool or beach time. It's well to remember how rich Virginia is with every outdoor pleasure: mountains, valleys, rivers, and yes, even the beach. The variety of outdoor activity here and just a short drive away is one of the reasons I fell in love with Loudoun County. Whether it's a wine tour, taking up a new sport (speed racing motorcycles, anyone?), lounging by the pool or something else, we hope our summer issue puts you in the mood to get out and do what you love with the people who matter most.

Summertime always has us in the mood for outdoor living...floating in the pool with your favorite beverage, waiting out the heat and humidity then having a cookout to end the day. A family in Vienna had the same aspirations for their 2-acre property and decided to do something about it after realizing during the pandemic that they were missing out on a huge opportunity at home. "Many families realized during the pandemic that their homes could be transformed into a perfect playground," says Sonny Nazemian, master designer/builder at Michael Nash Design Build. "In this case, the kids wanted a pool, the father wanted a large deck,
gazebo and fireplace, and the mother wanted a jacuzzi and large patio. Fortunately, we were able to make them all happy!" The property was full of trees and was very hilly, so plans included lot clearing, relocating utility lines, and excavating a five foot slope to grade. Then a lead walk with stairs covered in stone, retaining wall and stone bedded landscaping were created, bringing you down from the driveway and side entrance into backyard. The main showcase of the backyard is a large multi-level irregular flagstone patio that leads you to secluded octagonal gazebo in front of stone fireplace and outdoor kitchenette, wrapped with stone walls for seating. The gazebo is covered with cypress stain grade ceiling panels, contains a large ceiling fan, recess lights and infrared heating elements, making this space suitable for all seasons. The team worked with a partner pool company to create a heated pool and waterfall rock with a surrounding pool deck wrapped with flagstone and contrasting stone retaining walls. This lower patio runs under the covered deck, creating space for a jacuzzi and a seating area. A waterproof 8-inch beaded ceiling was designed to keep the area dry and comfortable. "Our next step was to build out a new deck space connected to the patio with a long staircase," says Sonny. "We encourage building multi-level living spaces that can be accessed from different areas of the home. Now this upper-level Trex deck area sits just outside of kitchen and family room and the space gives the family the opportunity to entertain off the house's main level and overlook the beautiful backyard and pool. When the sun is going down and all of the lights are on, the area is just stunning." The area is not just utilitarian...the choice of irregular flagstone, grey tigerwood decking with contrasting rails and trims and the lighting component, also bring a stylish design that makes this backyard the envy of the neighborhood. TOP LEFT: The lighting component is spectacular. | CIRCLE: The Before. TOP RIGHT: The entire space works seamlessly. | MIDDLE RIGHT: The outdoor kitchen and fireplace are great for family gatherings. | BOTTOM: The gazebo is built for all seasons. CONTINUED >

Christina Shaw Puts the World of Wine at Your Fingertips

the wine
M ERCH A N T CHRISTINA SHAH BRINGS THE WORLD'S BEST WINES TO LOUDOUN ARTICLE BY JIM MAGNER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELINDA GIPSON
In 2013, a team of scientists performing an underwater survey off the coast of a tiny Greek island in the Ionian Sea discovered a shipwreck that dated to the first century B.C. The ancient Roman ship’s cargo included more than 6,000 amphorae of wine. The Romans were absolutely crazy for wine, which they produced in great abundance, but, like all cultures that discover wine, they weren’t satisfied just to drink the local stuff. The Roman elite craved wines from the far-flung corners of their empire, and beyond, and they were willing to pay a premium to have it shipped in. Americans are no different. Ask for the wine list at your favorite eatery and you will have the opportunity to order something from almost anywhere in the world – France, Italy, Spain, South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, Lebanon, Turkey, California, Oregon – whatever you think will go nicely with that seafood salad you just ordered. But have you ever thought about how it gets there? How can a farmer toiling in a tiny vineyard half a world away press his grapes, bottle up the wine and get it to a restaurant in Purcellville, all so that my Mother can guzzle a glass of it with her flounder on her birthday?
Ask Christina Shah. She knows. She is an expert in wine, and not the “I can taste hints of peat, dark cherry and coffee” kind of expert in wine (though she is a level two sommelier), but more to the point, she is the “how to get wine to the customer” kind of expert. If asked, she humbly insists that she isn’t an “expert” at all because, “you can never know enough about wine. The landscape is always changing.” Still, she and the Loudoun-based company that she works for, International Cellars, are the reason that you have the luxury of perusing a globally diverse and compelling wine list. Christina’s wine journey began in 2018 during a friendly tennis match. She casually mentioned to her opponent that she was considering getting a part-time job. Her opponent worked for a wine distributer in Sterling, Virginia and they were looking for a sales rep. She applied, but the interview wasn’t very encouraging. “When I went in, they told me that the pay was commission only and that it was really hard work, and I probably wouldn’t see any money for six months.” Christina took the job anyway. Within a year, she had so many accounts that she had to ask her boss to stop giving her more. “I didn’t know anything about wine, and here I was making sales calls where I was meeting with sommeliers and top chefs. At first, it was very intimidating.” Since then, Christina has continued to move up the ladder at International Cellars, and to do so, she’s had to learn the logistics of how wine moves around the globe. In the United States, there are three levels and the law requires that they all remain separate. There are producers, distributors, and retailers. The distributors, like IC, search the world to find wines to import, trying to guess in advance what their retailer customers will be interested in buying. The importer takes the risk and pays up front for the product in hopes that they can sell it back home. Then, they arrange the shipping, warehousing and distribution of those products. “You get to know your accounts,” says Christina. “You can taste a new product and immediately know which of your customers is going to be interested in it.” Christina’s personal journey is very similar to that of her employer. A dozen years ago or so, International Cellar’s founder was on vacation with his wife when he came across a wonderful wine, but when he got home, he realized that it wasn’t available for sale in America. He loved the wine so much, that he started importing it himself as a side hobby. It’s a side hobby that has outgrown one Sterling warehouse and spilled over into a new one that is much larger, holding nearly 700,000 bottles. In addition to their own distribution business, IC offers a host of shipping, warehouse and logistics services to other, smaller importers and distributors. Christina now works with IC’s importer clients as well as handling her own distribution clients, like Steven Plant of Plant Wines, who specializes in small estate wines grown organically and fermented without additives (plantwines.com). Plant and others are a constant source of inspiration, along with restaurant patrons. While our average readers won’t interact with Christina personally, all they need do to offer input is request a wine they like from a given restauranteur. These requests are passed up the chain until they catch her eye. I asked Christina what she thought of the wine culture in Loudoun County and how it has changed over the time that she has been in the business. “Loudoun is a wine destination” she said, “But there’s this huge competition between the wineries and the breweries and it seems like there are more of both every year. One thing that I’ve noticed is that Loudoun wine drinkers are getting more sophisticated and more demanding than they used to be.” She told me that Washington, D.C. used to be the premier market for higher-end wines, but there has been a shift, especially since the COVID crisis. Northern Virginia is the premier market now and Loudoun is a big part of that. Note that readers can avail themselves of her signature Christina's Hot Sauce! In seeming disregard of her distinguishing palate, Christina also makes an artisanal hot sauce with 100% habanero pepper, no preservatives added. "It has just the right amount of thickness and the carrots gives it just a hint of sweetness," she says. You can find t at Ciao Osteria (Centreville), Piero's Corner (Franklin Farm), and Lebanese Taverna Market or you can buy directly from her by dropping her a line at christinahotsauce2021@gmail.com.

When Only the RIGHT Cigar Will Do Route 7's Alec Rubiera
ARTICLE BY JIM MAGNER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEC RUBIERA
George Burns once said, “What is happiness? A good cigar, a good meal, and a good woman – or a bad woman; it depends on how much happiness you can handle.” And he lived to be a hundred. Loudoun’s own Alec Rubiera knows a thing or two about a good cigar. Despite his cherub-like appearance, Alec has been working in the cigar industry for years, beginning with a part time job in a shop with a college friend and including serving as a brand rep for Ashton Cigars. A few years ago, he opened Route 7 Cigars in Leesburg and has since expanded to a second location in Sterling. Visiting Route 7 is less like entering a storefront retail establishment and more like stepping into a high-end club. In addition to the expected humidor and displays, there is a tastefully decorated cigar lounge that is open to the public. There is also a private club lounge in the back where members can reserve their own temperature — and humidity — controlled lockers and enjoy

selections from their private collection on plush leather couches where they may take in a ballgame on the big screen TV. Some of his clients enjoy the lounge so much, Alec says, that they use it like a second office! Route 7 stocks more than 5,000 different cigars to cater to every possible taste, and every possible situation. Whether you’re trying a cigar for the first time, enjoying one after a big steak dinner, or sitting on the deck sipping champagne (as one does), there is a perfect cigar for that specific situation. According to Alec, “The right cigar should enhance the experience.” So, for grins and giggles, I decided to quiz him. “Ok, let’s say I just got home from a long day at the office and I pour myself a glass of bourbon,” I asked. Alec responded, “Is this a mild bourbon like a Woodford Reserve, something spicy and rich like Basil Hayden or something with a smoother, caramel flavor like George Remus?” He’s deadly serious. What he means by the query is that a particular
cigar would be most appropriate for each style of bourbon. Even his associates agree. You won’t find any clueless, indifferent part-timers manning the register at Route 7. It is important to Alec that customers have a great experience every time. And, while many customers have one or two go-to favorites, many others are more experimental. Whichever category fits your tastes, there will be a knowledgeable associate with the expertise necessary to help you make an informed selection. For the record, I told him that the bourbon in my hypothetical was Larceny and his answer was “Go with a Davidoff Grand Cru.” Later that day, I confirmed that his advice was spot on. Route 7 Cigars can be found in Leesburg in Suite F, 521 East Market Street, (in Community Plaza), phone: 703.777.5233, and in Sterling in Suite 103, 46950 Community Plaza; phone: 703-826-8991.

LeFay Cottage at Little Washington is an ideal rural escape located in the historic village of Washington, Virginia. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom property is located on five acres overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains and currently available for rent on Airbnb and other online platforms. In addition to being a rental, the property has become a popular wedding destination, with a magical appeal that owner SallyAnne Andrews has created from her childhood dreams. Sally-Anne says she always imagined having “a secret garden cottage exuding magic and mysticism amid the allure of hills as old as time.” Upon entrance, visitors are greeted with an old iron faerie gate surrounded by lush greenery and gardens with blooming, fragrant flowers. Andrew explains there are three outdoor areas for couples to marry, including a lavender field that is in full bloom at the end of June and early July — making a perfect natural setting for a couple that “enjoys the path less traveled.” The cottage is only a short drive from the famous Michelin three-star restaurant, The Inn at Little Washington, as well as other fine dining and casual dining restaurants, award-winning wineries, and distilleries. Narmanda Winery Chardonnel Reserve
While you’re in Rappahannock don’t miss visiting the finest wineries the Piedmont region has to offer. Rappahannock Cellars is just one that sits on an 85+ acre farm with its first grapes planted over twenty years ago. Today, owner John Delmare says, “the farm now consists of 30 acres of vineyard, including new varietals such as Merlot, Petit Verdot, Norton, and others.” The winery has won numerous accolades and on weekends hosts events with live music, food trucks, and festivals. They’re also environmentally friendly and have adopted practices including composting and are researching other programs to reduce their environmental footprint.
NARMADA WINERY Overlooking the bucolic scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is the elegant tasting room at Narmada Winery, founded by Sudha Patil and her late husband Pandit Patil. The winery was a long-standing dream for the couple that finally became a reality in 2009. The couple’s original intention was to grow the fruit to provide to other Virginia winemakers, however as Sudha’s curiosity about the winemaking process grew she ended up studying with Jim Law of Linden Vineyards, one of Virginia’s premier winemakers, and bottling her own. Not only does Narmada boast award-winning wines, they also host interesting events every weekend like paint and sip parties, live music and fall festivals. The winery serves authentic Indian food as well and is family friendly, consistently providing entertainment for children. There is truly something for everyone here.

Blake and his Ducati
Blake Soni owns and operates one of Loudoun County’s fastest growing small businesses: Huck and Company Mobile Auto Detailing (huckandcompany.com). The company, which Blake started as a side service for friends and family, initially was founded on our area’s time-honored appreciation for quality automobiles. But Blake’s obvious mastery of leading edge automotive technology rapidly combined with the pandemic-led explosion in demand for delivery-based convenience services to create a rapidly-expanding, full-time concern. Detailing, for the uninitiated, can range from restoring a soccer mom’s minivan interior to “like new” condition all the way up to correcting and polishing the paintjob of an Aston Martin to a showroom shine before applying a ceramic coating to ensure long lasting protection. Blake’s business caters to anyone looking to protect their automotive investment. Ironically, one notable downside of our society’s recent drive-to-convenience is the habit of running your auto through the drive-through car wash. This seemingly easy solution for “keeping your car clean” displaces at-home hand-washing and comes with a high cost. “Once you start to notice what the car wash is doing to your vehicle – you start walking by and seeing all the swirl marks in the paint and scratching – that’s when you begin to wonder
Blake and his wife are expecting their first child in August
what kind of damage it is doing to your car,” Blake says. And, whether you drive a Tesla or a Honda Civic, “your car is a major investment and you want to protect it.” It’s this attention to detail that marks Blake’s best customers. In his business, true protection comes in the form of high-tech, chemically engineered ceramic coatings. These coatings are essentially making traditional carnauba waxes (“wax on, wax off”) a thing of the past. A ceramic coating is an extremely durable, hydrophobic (think water beading up) layer that is applied to your vehicle. It is resistant against surface level scratching, UV rays, bug/bird etchings, water spotting, and industrial fallout such as dirt, debris and metal particles. As a bonus, these coatings also make maintenance washing a breeze and keep your vehicle shining like new for years to come. It’s just not the kind of thing you can apply yourself. Blake is professionally trained to apply these high-tech coatings and is a certified installer for Adam’s Polishes.

The full treatment creates a mirror-like shine

He explains that the process of applying a ceramic coating begins with a thorough wash to remove the initial layer of dirt and grime. A clay bar or mitt is then used alongside a lubricating spray to remove additional debris that is embedded in your auto’s paint — something a basic wash was never designed to address. After the surface of the paint is clear of debris, only then can he begin the correction and polishing process. This process involves buffing and polishing out surface level scratching, swirl marks and other impurities in the paint of that have not gone through clear coating, transforming the paint to a mirror-like shine. Once the paint is as good as it can possibly can get – on the order of 85% to 90% better – he will then seal it all up with a ceramic coating. His longest lasting ceramic is rated for approximately 9 to 10 years with proper installation and maintenance. Because we find expertise of any kind fascinating, and the whole field of ceramics a little confusing, we asked Blake to take a deeper dive. He explained that silicon dioxide is technically the chemical that makes a “ceramic,” a ceramic. But even among silicon dioxide “ceramic” products there are different qualities and consistencies and a range of different manufacturer claims regarding length of protection. That makes knowing what to look for in a brand of ceramic the key to its value. In general, the potency of the silicon dioxide is essentially what dictates the length of protection the coating can provide. The higher the percentage of the chemical, the longer the protection it provides. However, the higher the percentage, the trickier the process of applying it becomes. As noted earlier, Blake uses a line of products from Adam’s Polishes and is a certified installer of their ProLine (Professional Grade) Graphene Ceramic Coating. Because not all ceramics are created equal, “In the automotive industry we’re all guilty of overusing the term ‘ceramic.’ You can buy two- to threemonth ‘ceramics’ that come out of a spray bottle, but they’re so diluted that they’re not a true ceramic. True ceramics lasting 7 to 10 years come in drip form, in small vials. Those are true ceramic coatings,” Blake explains. Blake even uses interior ceramics that protect from wear and tear by dogs and kids, though he allows nothing really keeps canine nose prints off glass. We
mention dogs because the company itself was named for Huck, Blake’s first rescue out of college. And, each of his tiered detailing packages are named for his current canine cadre. The “Huck” is naturally his highest end package as already described, while the “Maya” package is a mid-tier, one-time, full interior and exterior reset. Last but not least, the “Finn,” a regularly scheduled, bi-weekly maintenance package providing an interior and exterior touch-up, is “really taking off,” Blake says, which is why he is actively looking to expand. Look for a big leap up to a Brick & Mortar studio to handle more than one vehicle at a time in the near future. One of the challenges in providing a convenience-oriented service to others is that the work often expands to be more than “full-time,” meaning Blake has had jobs go well into the night and that often expand into weekends and holidays. His adjustment to work-life balance will become even more important when his wife Alex delivers their first born later this summer. While Huck was his first true family member, and though he’s gone now, Blake says, “We would not be the same family we are today without him.” It’s evident after a few minutes with Blake that he’s proud of what he does and how he does it. He says he’s constantly reminding himself, “always be the type of person your dog thinks you are.” Detailing demands passion, experience and diligence, qualities that he also applies to his work as a certified riding instructor through the Yamaha Champions Riding School (where he is a 3C certified coach) and the U.S. Motorcycle Coaching Association. “The motorsports community brings me a lot of joy and fulfillment, [but] I am a dog person more than anything.” From an outsider’s perspective looking in, it seems that Blake has found his “American Dream.” He’s doing everything he loves with the people – and dogs – he loves doing it with. In Blake’s case, that comes with a cool garage and even cooler bikes (he owns a Ducati, along with a couple others), and a job that makes him and his customers proud and happy. “I have a pretty big vision for [Huck and Company] and am excited to be doing what I love full time,” he says with a grin. See huckandcompany.com, call 941-320-9993 or email huckandco@gmail.com.

HIDDEN TRUTHS ABOUT SUGAR
You shouldn’t think of dental care as just cleanings and you certainly shouldn’t wait to go to the dentist until something is wrong. Building a positive relationship with your dentist is crucial. State of the art technology and accommodations should make your visit an enjoyable experience, not a chore. The American Dental Association recommends that everyone visit their dentist for an exam and cleaning at least once a year, and preferably once every six months. The days of cold, dreary dental offices are a thing of the past. Similar to the rest of your body, your teeth and gums have the best chance of being healthy when you’re eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet. Particularly one low in sugars and processed foods.
Finding healthy alternatives to unhealthy snacks is the best way to make balanced eating a part of your lifestyle. This not only helps limit the calories we pack on, but also prevents the accumulation of disease-causing bacteria in the oral cavity. Sugar is addicting and is one of the main cavity causing factors. The more sugar we consume, the more we crave it. To limit one’s intake, try cutting it out for a few days and notice how you start to crave it less and less. We’re not using sugar the way we used to. Before, natural sugars were used to sweeten foods and drinks. Natural sugars have now been replaced with processed sugars in the form of artificial sweeteners. Understanding the differences between good and bad sugars can help us make better decisions in terms of the foods we consume. Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar from plants that is actually good for us. It prevents the development of cavities while delivering the same delicious flavor we desire when craving something sweet. So, chewing xylitol gum or candies after meals can replace that sweet fix we crave. Here are some healthy ways to satisfy your sweet tooth: • Incorporate more fruits into your diet. Fruit salads are a creative way to do so! • Smoothies are another fun way to get the nutrients fruits are packed with while enjoying a sweet and refreshing pick-me-up. • Natural yogurts and dairy products can be a delicious snack, but also contain calcium and casein which protect our teeth and help prevent cavities from happening. • Incorporate naturally occurring sugars such as xylitol and sorbitol which come in the form of gum and powdered sweeteners. These can be found at your local grocery store! • Remember to have regularly scheduled checkups and to have a comfortable, open dialogue with your dentist. Good oral health plays a big factor in being in good overall health. Dr. Shohreh Sharif has been practicing dentistry for 25 years. Selling an older home in a high-end neighborhood, with a tenant in place, with $150k of needed updates, long-distance and during COVID-19 pandemic—this could have been the ultimate real-estate horror story. Instead, it was one
of the easiest, smoothest house sales I’ve ever experienced. Pam handled everything and quickly sold the house for more than the asking price. Pam is the most professional and capable agent that I’ve ever worked with. —Former River Creek Residents
