Real Clients. Real Experiences. With three growing boys and a house and backyard that could barely contain their activities, Owen and Keiranne O’Donnell found themselves in a difficult situation. They loved living in Loudoun County. They loved their neighborhood. But something had to give. Luckily, they found their “Dream Home” only a few blocks away with space for the boys to safely roam. Even Dad gets to join in on the fun!

As a Loudoun County resident for over 20 years, I’ve come to realize “home” is more than a physical location, it’s also a community connection. My team is dedicated to bringing you the best of both.

The June issue is our annual tribute to Loudoun County men, and each year I debate how stereotypically manly we are going to get. This year, not so much. The truth is, being a man these days is much less about ego, chest thumping and bench press-to-body weight ratio. We've entered an age where part of being a man is about introspection and vulnerability. We can work hard and achieve because that's what we want to do and it feeds our souls, not because we are being measured by how much money we earn or how "manly" our pursuits are. Do what you love, not because you feel like you need to, but because it feels good and it is the right thing for you. I started this magazine based on that premise. I wrestled with being miserable in a corporate environment for many years. Sure, the money and "power" were great... my ego was fed. But I came home each night and wasn't very happy with it all. I was stressed. I was bored. I wasn't connected to any community because I was traveling all of the time. I did a lot of work on myself and my perception of the world, and I remembered how much I loved my time working on magazines in New York. I decided to get back to that and do something I enjoyed and produce something each month that has value for the community. So here we are (incidentally, we just started our 4th year in May!). This issue is about doing what you love and what makes you feel good. We feature local up-and-coming musicians, and drinks from Catoctin Creek (which is the epitome of starting something from love and making it successful.) Our Giving Back feature this month focuses on a local builder who gives something back each time he builds a home, and we take a look at the love being shared at The National Conference Center. And finally, men's fashion. We are all shaped differently and having clothes that fit just make you feel good. We found a company that can set you up! A special thanks to Scott at Catoctin Creek for letting us shoot in his beautiful distillery in Purcellville.

Alair Homes Hunt Country has always excelled in custom home building, but its latest achievement is finding the "sweet spot" in energy efficiency and affordability. For a tech-savvy home-buyer, Matthew Bowe achieved a Home Energy Rating System rating of 2, meaning this home uses 2% of the energy consumed by the average new home! That equates to home energy bills of just $20/month, so the home owners have plenty left over to entertain friends and family. Photography: Alair Homes Hunt Country

CATCH THESE RISING STARS WHILE YOU CAN

The live music scene in Loudoun County is flourishing, and raw, young talent thrives right under your nose. Young musicians begin in your local breweries, wineries, and neighborhood coffee shops, then too frequently leave town in search of larger venues. With all the talent that fills the area, some of these musicians are bound to have slipped below your radar. Listen when you have the chance, and imagine what they could become here with a more permanent performing arts venue.

Emerging Artists from Loudon County

Catie Lausten Indie Pop Originally from Ashburn, now based in Richmond

Catie Lausten, originally from Ashburn, Virginia, is currently based in the exploding musical city of Richmond, VA, where she’s releasing music that calls out to the hopeless romantic. She was influenced by artists like Faye Webster, Norah Jones, and Andy Shauf, but between her light, dreamy sound, and personal, humorous lyrics, Catie is creating her own unique, gripping, and complex sound within the Indie Pop genre. She’s been a performer and musician for as long as she can remember, but pursuing music professionally is a recent undertaking. As a child, Catie sang through dinners (despite her family’s protests), participated in musicals and chorus classes, and tried to put the guitar her parents bought her to good use, but the lessons never stuck. When she didn’t get the lead in her 8th grade musical, she quit music altogether. “I was a little full of myself I guess.” That is, until she found inspiration in the musicians at house shows and local venues around Richmond. She has since picked the guitar back up, taught herself, and made music the center of her life’s goals. “I just knew I would never be happy working at a desk job, at least not before trying to pursue music.” Catie recently released a 2-song project, What a Life I Love Living, with her collaborator John Traium. Up next, an EP entitled Love to Love to Love dropping this month and an East Coast tour later this summer. Instagram: @UncleCatie; Streaming Platforms: Catie Lausten

LOCA L’S CH OICE | ARTS + CULTURE

From writing and directing a full-length musical, to performing on the Kennedy Center stage after being awarded Best Lead Actress, to photography, graphic design, and more, Sarah Katherine Lawless’ accomplishments brand her a true renaissance woman. Growing up in Lansdowne, Virginia, Sarah Katherine was almost constantly performing in musicals, but whenever she wasn’t, she was writing songs in her bedroom. Over the years, her music has evolved from “angsty, sad ballads,” into a mature indie rock sound with contemporary jazz and folk influences. Now, Sarah Katherine attends Boston Conservatory at Berklee, which she credits for turning her into the artist she is today. “I am around such incredible musicians and artists in multiple different veins and mediums.” But she allows that she was impacted by the Loudoun County music scene, and particularly by the Battle of the Bands which helped her to meet music mentors, play venues like Tally Ho, and open for the bands MayDay Parade and Cruisr. She believes her biggest accomplishment is next up. Through her start-up company, On The Fringe, she and her collaborators will be turning her original song cycle into a collaborative, experiential performance. It will be filmed at a secret location in Boston and available to view as a short film on YouTube as “Hurry Home: A Collaborative Performative Experience.” At the end of the day, Sarah Katherine wants to make music people can relate to. Support her by following her on Instagram, streaming her four singles, and stay tuned for the EP she’s working towards releasing. Teddy Chipouras of Palmyra

Americana/ Folk/ Singer-Songwriter Originally from Lovettsville, now based in Floyd, Virginia

For Teddy Chipouras of Lovettsville, Virginia, songwriting was an obsession born out of inspiration. After he found music that spoke to him, from artists like The Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons, he knew he had to figure out how to make similar music. At age 16, he began performing at open mics and breweries around the area, mainly playing covers and a few of the originals he had written. By age 20, he was headlining an album release show for his first full length album at Tally Ho in Leesburg. Now Teddy is a member of Palmyra, an Americana/ Folk trio with bandmates, and fellow JMU alumni, Manoa and Sasha. The three tour the country, capturing audiences with their blend of traditional folk string instruments, intimate and contemplative lyrics, and tight three-part harmonies. Teddy’s goal is to build upon what Palmyra has begun, playing more clubs, and growing a larger, country-wide fanbase. As a solo artist, Teddy dreamed of traveling for music, making

it his full-time job, and being a part of a band; Palmyra has brought those dreams to fruition. “I’ve found it so fulfilling to be able to write and perform in a band. In our trio, our songs develop through three brains instead of one and lead to something I could never do on my own.” Their album Shenandoah will be released on June 17th on all streaming services (including Bandcamp - a platform to directly support musicians). Loudoun locals can catch them at Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery in Waterford on July 22nd, right before they make their FloydFest debut. Palmyra is touring indefinitely, so be sure to watch their website for announcements and upcoming tour dates. Brush Arbor Homes Looks to Scale Its Work to House The World’s Poorest The Newly Constructed Birthing Center in Guatemala

A Beneficiary of Birthing Center Services

Buy One, Build One (brusharborhomes.com/buy-one-buildone). It’s a profoundly simple yet impactful concept that comes from Jonathan Smith’s desire to glorify God for all His blessings. For every custom home he builds locally with his company Brush Arbor Homes, “B1B1” will build or donate the funds to build a home for a needy family overseas. After college in the late 1990’s, he lived abroad working with a Christian organization in Uganda that ran a secondary school for orphaned boys – a kind of leadership academy to equip them for life in the war-torn country. He and his wife then lived in Central and South America with other missionary organizations doing relief work and Evangelical Christian outreach. For five years following his return to the U.S., he was in financial planning, but yearned to return to building. Having concluded that NVR, the parent company of Ryan Homes, had the best local training program for construction, he interviewed several times before being accepted. “At 27 I didn’t fit their typical profile because I didn’t apply right out of college,” he explains. Leveraging personal contacts with the company and his proficiency in Spanish, he finally succeeded in signing on and worked there five years before starting his own firm. Brush Arbor Homes was founded in 2006, and now builds 15-20 homes annually, mostly in D.C., Arlington and McLean, with its now 15+ employees. After the first 10 or 20 houses the company built, it donated money to build five homes overseas, and things grew from there. “I’ve worked with many different missionaries and pastors in five or six different countries, so at first we just sent them money,” to build homes for deserving families, Jonathan explained. “They would send us a profile of a widow with a family – just like the Bible says, we’re to support widows and orphans and the disabled – and we would donate to fill the need.” He added, “It’s not like here where churches take offerings. [Ministers typically] are paid to be full-time pastors and

then they have to support themselves. We would ask our missionary contacts to identify somebody in need or who is giving their life to serve other people, and that’s who we built the house for.” “My hope is that people will see how few resources it takes to make life-changing differences and that all of us will enjoy the heartfelt blessings of turning a life around,” Jonathan said. Occasionally, Jonathan visited the home construction, but for the most part they sent the required funds necessary for the local church community to do the actual construction. That was how the first 10 or 20 homes were built before Jonathan established a 501(c)(3) through Ashburn-based United Charitable (unitedcharitable.org), so B1B1 could take donations from others to try to do more. Now both customers and other builders and lenders can participate in the effort, which has grown to build more than 100 homes and other much needed infrastructure around the world. Working with Compassion International, “We’ve built churches that serve as schools the other six days a week” – as well as places where families can come for clothing and other necessities – for example. One project near and dear to the charity is a birthing center it recently built in Guatemala. For background, Jonathan explains that home birthing in many third world countries can lead to the birth of children with disabilities, whose families can’t support them. One of Buy One Build One’s partners in Guatemala runs an orphanage for such children. When a donor gave that charity some land near a landfill in Guatemala City, the orphanage manager Daryl thought the best use of the property would be to build a birthing center. The center would give the city’s poor women better care and avert the cycle of birth defects that so often led to the abandonment of children with disabilities. Jonathan says he asked Daryl, “Well, what can we do? We’re ready to help.” Hesitantly, Daryl said, “Well it’s a lot more expensive than a house,” which typically CONTINUED >

A Needy Family With Their New B1B1 Home in Honduras

“My hope is that people will see how few resources it takes to make life-changing differences and that all of us will enjoy the heartfelt blessings of turning a life around.” – Jonathan Smith runs $5,000 or so. “Well, how much?” Jonathan responded. “It’s like $15,000,” said Daryl. Said Jonathan, “I was blown away,” meaning that he was surprised that the price was so low. For an eventual cost of around $18,000, Buy One Build One built a hospital that functions as a birthing center for poor women, many of them prostitutes, who could not otherwise afford medical care. As Jonathan explains on the website, “My hope is that people will see how few resources it takes to make life-changing differences and that all of us will enjoy the heartfelt blessings of turning a life around.” He says, “I strongly believe that unless there’s a spiritual aspect to it, that the effect you can have is very temporary and may be not as not as far reaching,” which explains why his missionary contacts are so vital to the non-profit’s work. He also hastens to add that Brush Arbor Homes doesn’t market the donation aspect of his custom building. “We do tell people that, while we’re building their house, we’re going to build at least one home for another needy family, and later share the photo of that construction when it’s finished.” Before and after photos of where the beneficiary family formerly and now lives serve as a lasting legacy for clients who already are delighted with their new home construction.

Jonathan’s family has grown to include an adopted son from Uganda, and he helps lead mission trips for fellow parishioners at Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg. This year they’ll go to both Honduras and Guatemala. “What I tell people is that God can change the lives of people overseas without you, but He wants to change your life through the experience of helping people.” It’s a lesson particularly beneficial to the financially fortunate in Loudoun County: that their lives can be enriched by seeing the changed lives their giving has benefitted. Going forward, Jonathan hopes to scale Buy One Build One to include other builders and realtors nationwide who want to help but don’t have the experience and contacts that Jonathan has developed over the last dozen years. “Anyone can email me and I’m happy to share the process with them. There are many generous builders and other Christians who want to help people, but they don’t know how to set it up. We can make sure the money is getting to the right people and even set up their websites so their customers can see the families they’ve impacted.” “All we want to do is glorify God and serve those in need around the world,” Jonathan added. “That’s all that matters.”

And while no one was hurt in this accident, Dan S. had suffered almost every day of his life with tingling and burning in his feet until numbness set it and he could no longer feel even the brake pedal beneath his foot.

That’s where Rachal Lohr and her staff at FIREFLY come in. “About 75% of our current patients come to us suffering from the same condition as Mr. Dan,” tells Rachal. “They’re in constant pain from neuropathy and it prevents them from not only living their lives but more importantly, it prevents them from enjoying it.

“The first stage is pain.” shares Rachal Lohr, Acupuncturist of FIREFLY Depending on the severity of their nerve Acupuncture & Wellness. “You feel damage, we typically see tremendous burning, tingling, sharp pains, or you progress in 3-4 months of treatment. feel like you’re walking on tacks or I like to say we’re in the business of marbles. “I can’t lie,” confides Dan. “I was skeptical at first. The folks down at my pain center told me there was nothing that could be done and then there’s a doctor right here in Loudoun who tells me she can help. Turns out she was right! About three months after treatment I was able to confidently drive myself to my appointments! My wife and I celebrated by buying ourselves a new car! It’s hard to put into words how incredible this is, quite frankly [Rachal] gave me my life back.”

While FIREFLY specializes in acupuncture and it’s definitely part of their protocols in treating neuropathy, the real secret is in a more modern medical solution called ATP Resonance BioTherapy™. “This technology was originally developed by NASA to expedite healing and recovery” shares Terri, a Senior Patient Care Coordinator at the clinic. “It’s like watering a plant. ATP Resonance BioTherapy™ stimulates the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerve and provide them the proper nutrients to heal and repair.” You can learn more about Rachal Lohr and FIREFLY By visiting FIREFLYAcuAndWellness.com. If you’re ready to schedule a consultation call (703)263-2142 and do so quickly. FIREFLY is a very intimate clinic and the staff takes pride in their ability to take their time with each patient so they are very limited in their ability to take on new patients.

THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTER

The Library as English Classroom

In April, the halls of The National Conference Center (NCC) buzzed with prayer, conversation and the clatter of plates and silverware during the evening breaking of the fast during the Islamic month-long celebration of Ramadan. The Mezzanine level on most evenings sported blankets spread out on the floor for family picnics. Out behind the center, kids played soccer. Everywhere there was chatter and laughter and on every face unmistakable smiles of relief. It’s not what you’d expect of a major convention venue emerging from a pandemic. But, while most hospitality venues continue to struggle as every-day life returns to normal, at NCC, all 917 rooms are filled with some 1,300 Afghan refugees, and the kitchen bustles to prepare Halal meals with the assistance of two recently hired Afghan chefs. These unusual guests are the beneficiaries of a U.S. government program called Operation Allies Welcome (OAW), which aims to resettle 30,000 friends of Uncle Sam from the war in Afghanistan. John Walsh, General Manager of the center, said that The National’s current residents include a range of American allies, from journalists to human rights activists, humanitarian workers and others who supported U.S. military and civilian personnel in Afghanistan, often at significant personal risk. The Department of Homeland Security and Defense Department are working together to welcome the refugees with medical services, housing and meal services. They’ll also support non-governmental organizations to help to relocate the Afghans and ease their transition into the U.S., although finding an avenue to support the effort takes no small amount of effort. Security at the compound itself is tight, and folks at The National aren’t actually allowed to direct donation efforts because the government must first vet “community giving circles” – complete with background security checks – who are willing to help welcome Afghans to their new neighborhoods all across the country. (See sidebar, above.) For now, NCC’s ample grounds provide security and community, and most of the Afghans’ first exposure to life in America. NCC’s food and beverage team is coordinating with cultural advisors to

provide more than 4,000 meals per day. Some 680 refugees have been resettled, but more are expected as groups are placed. John, who currently lives at NCC for long stretches, says that the Afghans began arriving in March and will continue to come through September 28. Remarking on the “sense of relief” on every face, he says NCC personnel leap to provide a quick meal and a room for the tired travelers. To meet the rigors of Ramadan, NCC’s culinary team in April arrived at 2 a.m. to start the traditional pre-dawn breakfast. Dinner started at 7 p.m. and went until 10 p.m. Conference rooms were converted to prayer rooms or classrooms for English lessons or other schoolwork for the children. “Children are so resilient,” says John. “We have babies to four-year-old’s to middle-schoolers and teenagers. The older kids are all running around our courtyard like it’s a schoolyard when the weather is nice. There are colored chalk drawings of trees and people and hearts, and quite often they’ll write ‘thank you’ as part of their drawing on the blacktop.” Spontaneous soccer games often involve bellmen and others used to serving more scripted roles. “It’s fun to watch a 10- or 12-year-old taking our bellmen to school on the field!” John adds. A make-shift “teen center” takes advantage of a recreation area pool table and video games. “You’ll see teachers interacting with students teaching not just English but American culture and art. There’s even a computer lab,” John explains. “That’s interesting because when this campus was originally

Chalk Drawing

thought out, it was designed as a learning center. Now you’ll see groups of families sticking around in the dining hall chatting and practicing the words they learned for the day.” He added that many kids also have learned to thumb wrestle, a game John routinely loses. “It’s just fun for all of us. We couldn’t be doing anything better at this point in our careers and we’re fortunate to be part of this great humanitarian effort.” More seriously, he adds, “I can’t say enough about my team on what they’re able to accomplish. We had to launch this effort in December, going from 25 employees up to 150, and we’re still hiring.” For NCC’s staff, “it’s not about getting paid for a job. It’s about doing the right thing in a certain moment of time. My executive team and the managers all worked 18 to 21 hours a day to get this launched. That’s an incredible commitment, but they realized how important this was so refugees to have a place to come to.” Locals who make a habit of walking around the conference center still have access to those trails; there’s just orange fencing intended to indicate non-entry. Naturally, that’s one of the fences the kids routinely shoot their soccer balls beyond, as if to see how the outside world will react. Typically, it’s with good humor and excited anticipation of the end to a different kind of quarantine. A “media day” is planned for May, when we hope we’ll have more to share via social media. In the meantime, if a soccer ball sails your way, don’t hesitate to throw it back.

AFFORDABLE CUSTOM CLOTHING FOR MEN J. HILBURN GIVES MEN OPTIONS FROM CASUAL TO FORMAL ARTICLE BY HANN LIVINGSTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASTRI WEE

Most men only think "custom" when it comes to suits and shirts, but designer J.Hilburn breaks bespoke clothing out of the boardroom and into everyday life. Think great fitting, quality clothing, personalized to your style on the golf course, at the pool, for nights on the town, and for weekend getaways. Now, imagine working with a local personal stylist who can walk you through hundreds of style options to create exactly what you need for every season. Fabric type and pattern, button color, stitch color, collar style, contrast fabrics for cuffs and collars -- it doesn't have to make your head swim. "There aren't a lot of places to shop for men anymore," says Debbie Whitfield, my independent stylist for J.Hilburn. "Add to that, most off-the-rack clothing neither fits properly or represents the style of the customer. We offer more options, with better quality and fit for a price-point that is comparable to, and in some cases less than, what you'd find in a store." Started in 2007, J.Hilburn was founded on the premise that a custom-made

experience should be accessible to everyone. By bypassing retail stores and working through independent stylists like Debbie, the company can offer the finest fabrics from top mills (Zegna, Loro Piana, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Thomas Mason, Albini and Ratti, to name a few) at lower cost than what you'd expect. The fabrics and styles are both evergreen and seasonal so there are always new fabrics and styles to choose from. My journey began with a free initial consultation. Debbie brought a rolling suitcase full of fabric and button options and we chatted about my style and what I'm comfortable wearing. I went home, downloaded the J.Hilburn Virtual Measuring App, and took my measurements with my phone. Then I scheduled another meeting at Debbie's office, where she double-checked my figures and we went to work designing my look. Debbie had pulled together a few suggestions for fabrics based on our initial consultation. The outfits she created were like small encapsulated wardrobes based on 6 garments that can be mixed or matched to wear for a variety of occasions. “I like to create style boards to show the client the various looks he can make with the clothes we've picked out," Debbie explains. Having selected fabrics, we used the new J.Hilburn online 3-D shirt configurator to walk

through various style options. It was helpful to be able to see what the finished garment would look like! Once I finalized my selection, Debbie placed the order, and the factory created every garment to my personal specifications and delivered them to my door. “It’s a very exciting time right now! Our business is growing quickly and I am looking for new team members who can help,” says Debbie. “Combining the convenience of online shopping with the expertise of a personal stylist, plus the top-line quality and fit of a high-end custom tailor makes shopping fun and easy, which, let’s face it, most men want!"

A Basement Renovation That Transforms Home Life

The open plan allows for a bar to connect to the theater area.

“THE VIVID COLOR TONES, STUNNING FIREPLACE WALL, AND MULTIPLE FURNISHED AREA SETTING HAS PUT THIS BASEMENT SPACE TO ITS MAXIMUM USE WITH GATHERINGS.” – SONNY NAZEMIAN, MCR, MCKBR 50

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN

The comfortable seating area is well lit.

Watching TV is cozy.

MICHAEL NASH DESIGN BUILD’S AWARD -WINNING DESIGN IS STYLISH AND PRACTICAL

For homeowners (and remodelers), an unfinished basement is the equivalent of an empty canvas for a painter. The possibilities for artistic creation are almost endless. A couple in Oakhill, VA had been staring at their blank canvas basement for years, wanting to turn it into an entertainment wonderland, even coming up with their own ideas and sketches for what they wanted in the space. They reached out to Michael Nash Design Build for professional help. “We love these projects,” says Sonny Nazemian, master designer/remodeler at Michael Nash Design Build. “There were a lot of expectations here and our design staff reviewed their sketches and ultimately came up with a new and improved floor plan that satisfied their requirements. What was important to them was to have an open and inviting space with multiple uses.” The original stairway from the main level was positioned in way that made the basement lay-out very choppy and not so desirable. Add to that, the hot water heater and HVAC unit took over the middle of the basement and was very awkward. So, the first order of business was to redesign the staircase and open up one side to widen the game room area and allow better use of the main space with an airier feel. Then the entire HVAC, hot water heater and main stack duct work were moved to allow room for the new bar area and an allowed the designers to add a stage for the theatre seating space. CONTINUED >

“A big component of basement design is allowing for natural light and access to outdoors,” says Sonny. “Without light, a basement seems cramped and people are less likely to use the space. To this end, we took out the original French doors and created windows for a new cozy seating area and moved the doors across from the bar, which improved flow and gave better access to the backyard flagstone patio. This simple switch makes a huge difference for daily life and entertaining.” The team was able to design a wall with built-ins on the far end of the space that accommodated an 80” TV and all sound equipment, including an embedded surround sound and speakers that serve the entire basement from a central location. On the far end of the space, they created a cozy seating area and gathering place with good window lighting and complete with a linear gas fireplace surrounded by metal linear stone and a floating stone hearth, which has become a visual centerpiece. Between these areas and just across from the new French doors, the team laid out the exquisite marble top bar with bar seating, gorgeous pin drop pendant lights, dark espresso cabinetry, tall wine Capitan, and lots of other amenities like an ice maker, large wine cooer, and refrigerator. The designers introduced a very unique glass backsplash tile to set this bar area off and also interconnect this space with color schemes of the fireplace area. The large living space is brought together with wide plank grey tone engineered wood floors that softly harmonize the stone walls and cabinet finishes. The size of the basement allowed for a guest suite bedroom and bathroom for guests and in-laws. The bath design includes a walk-in shower, floating vanities, pin hanging vanity lights and the tile and fixture selections for this bathroom would serve well in any main bath in any home. Final touches include bar ledges in the new gaming area for setting drinks, and custom built-ins to display arts and trophies at the bottom of the stairs. And just to right of the staircase sits an exercise room complete with rubber flooring. “Based on were we started,” says Sonny. “We made an award-winning basement renovation that is much appreciated by the homeowners and by our peers.”

TOP: The bar offers seating and guests can roam. LEFT: The stylish bar is a great scene for entertaining. MIDDLE: We love a rain head shower. RIGHT: The new bathroom features great details.

A NEW WAY TO THINK ABOUT DENTISTRY 54

HOW DOES IT WORK?

TAKE THE PAIN OUT OF YOUR DENTAL VISITS WITH LASERS.

Many of us have had negative experiences at the dentist office. This could have been due to a variety of factors. The mouth is a very sensitive area. Keeping your mouth open for long periods of time can be uncomfortable. The needles for anesthesia are scary. The loud sound of the drill ringing between your ears can be unbearable. Not to mention the shower you were not ready for with all the water spraying everywhere! There is an alternative to all of this. Laser dentistry is the answer you have been searching for. Lasers have been used in medicine for roughly 40 years. They are safe and becoming more widely used in the field of dentistry. In fact, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has approved laser dentistry for specific conditions. Lasers offer a more comfortable treatment option for a wide variety of treatments versus conventional drills and other non-laser tools. They can make dental treatments more effective and comfortable.

The instrument creates light energy that is highly focused into a narrow beam. This beam is then directed at the area of focus to obtain intended results. There are two primary functions of lasers in dentistry: hard and soft tissue. Hard tissue refers to the teeth and soft tissue, the gums. Different wavelengths and strengths are used for different types of procedures. The light from the laser that shines on the area is extremely specific allowing for minimally invasive treatment to be performed. This interaction causes minimal side-effects such as pain and excessive heat to the surrounding area versus conventional methods. In fact, it can actually promote healing in the treated area, whereas previous healing times would be longer with significant post-operative pain/sensitivity. The laser works in a way which minimizes vibration leading to increased comfort during the procedure. This is especially important in our pediatric populations to reduce fear and anxiety. Certain lasers work with your teeth in a way that actually have a pain-relieving effect. This is very important because it can eliminate the need for the anesthesia. This is the portion of an appointment where the needle is used! Proper training and education are essential for the dentist. Dr. Shohreh Sharif has taken years of extensive continuing education courses from all around the world in laser dentistry. She has state of the art equipment to ensure safety during the procedure and a successful outcome. Explore your options and ask if laser dentistry is suitable for your next dental procedure. Laser dentistry has the chance to change the age-old negative conceptions and phobias that are associated with a trip to the dentist and the drill. Dr. Shohreh Sharif has been practicing dentistry for 25 years. She is: Associate Professor, Howard University College of Dentistry Diplomate, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Diplomate, American Orthodontic Society IAD Top Pediatric Dentist among Leading Physicians of the World Fellow, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Acknowledgements: Journal of the American Dental Association, 2020 Lasers in Dentistry, 2017 European Journal of Pediatric Dentistry, 2017

After retiring further south, we decided to sell our River Creek home after leaving it on the rental market for over ten years. Selling an older home in a high-end neighborhood, with a tenant in place, with $150k of needed updates, long-distance and during COVID-19 pandemic—this could have been the ultimate real-estate horror story. Instead, it was one

of the easiest, smoothest house sales I’ve ever experienced. Pam handled everything and quickly sold the house for more than the asking price. Pam is the most professional and capable agent that I’ve ever worked with. —Former River Creek Residents
