Know the risks of investing — and not investing

Investing involves risk — and so does not investing. You should know how both these types of risk can affect your ability to reach your financial goals.

Let’s start with the risks connected with investing.

Whether you invest in stocks or bonds, there’s always an element of risk. Stock prices can fall for a variety of reasons — lower-than-expected earnings, a change in management, change in consumer tastes, and so on. And the prices of your bonds can fall when newer ones are issued with higher interest rates.

Even certificates of deposit carry some risk — the risk that you may not be able to reinvest your maturing CDs at the same rate.

By building a diversified portfolio, you can help manage investment risk, though diversification can’t guarantee profits or prevent all losses.

However, the biggest risk may come from not investing at all. If you don’t invest, or only invest in the most conservative vehicles, your money may not grow enough to help you reach your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement.

Try to follow an investment strategy that allows for risk but also offers the possibility of reward.

September - Fashion & Style Issue

Dear Reader,

I hope this letter finds you in high spirits and full of creative energy.

Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.

Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in Lee’s Summit to uplift our spirits, boost your productivity and ignite your creativity.

What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

KEEPING FOLKS COMFORTABLE SINCE 1956

ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPERT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

FAMILY-OWNED AFC HEATING AND COOLING SETS THE BAR HIGH.

When Art Spellerberg began his one-man operation, Art’s Furnace Company, in 1956 he probably never dreamed it would still be going strong 68 years later, run by a third generation of his family.

His business grew and by the 1970s, Art was amassing a group of young, talented individuals to work with him, and their scope expanded to include central air conditioning. Thus, AFC Heating and Cooling was born.

Jackie McCormick Heanue, office manager, is part of that third generation. She noted, “It was during this time that the true ‘family business’ dynamic began to take shape. Art's sons, David and Bill, became heavily involved in the company during this time, and several of Art's stepsons, the McCormick brothers, including my father John, Bob, Bill, Tom and Dennis, began joining the company.”

David eventually took the reins as the sole owner of the organization. Under his leadership, the company saw continued growth, prosperity, and change, including the company's move from Kansas City, Missouri, near Swope Park, to Lee's Summit in 2000.

In 2017, AFC began its third generation of ownership, with David's two sons, Phil and Matt, as well as the company's longtime Service Manager and Art's stepson, John McCormick, purchasing the company from David.

“Since 2017, we have continued to experience substantial growth, development and improvements, with an employee base of 33 full-time staff. Although some staff are relatively young and new, and many have been employed for three decades or more, the average tenure still sits at an impressive 16 years of service,” Jackie commented.

The company was an integral part of the new home industry and building boom of the 1990s and is now serving multiple community builders.

“Although our service area spans the entire metro, a significant portion of our residential and light commercial customer base is in Lee's Summit. All the principals of the company have called Lee's Summit home for more than 40 years, some their entire lives, and many of our employees reside in Lee's Summit as well. Our service manager, one of the principal owners has been with the company full-time for 48 years!” she continued. “We believe that community involvement and support is a critical responsibility of businesses.”

They hold teambuilding community service projects and serve on a number of community boards, nonprofit initiatives and youth athletic teams.

As a full-service HVAC company, they offer everything from preventative maintenance to repair to full system replacement. Preventative maintenance, including regular tune ups, is their number one recommendation. These visits can often catch irregularities with the system before they become major issues.

“It never fails that your system will decide to act up at the worst time, on the hottest or coldest day of the year!” she explained.

She also recommends changing and cleaning your furnace filter regularly and paying attention to your system and how it operates.

“2025 will usher in another new generation of refrigerant for the HVAC industry. It is important for homeowners to be aware of this and be prepared to ask questions before making decisions, especially if they relate to repair or replacement of their existing systems,” she reiterated.

Their philosophy is that their customers and employees are their greatest assets, and they take care of them with honesty, no hidden fees or surprises, and that is why they continue to have such a strong reputation in our community.

Their office is located at 824 NW Main Street, Lee's Summit. Call 816-347-8388 and visit afckc.com for more information.

A Guide To Back-to-School Immunizations

As summer draws to a close, it’s time for parents to prepare their children for the upcoming school year. One of the most important tasks on that back-to-school checklist is ensuring your child is up-to-date on their immunizations. Vaccinations are crucial for protecting your child’s health and the health of their classmates by preventing the spread of infectious diseases. This guide will provide you with everything you need to know about required and recommended vaccines for school-aged children.

Why Immunizations Are Important

Vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to prevent serious diseases. They train the immune system to recognize and fight specific viruses and bacteria. By getting your child vaccinated, you are protecting them and helping protect the entire community. When enough people are vaccinated, it creates herd immunity, making spreading diseases harder.

Required Vaccines for School

There are several common vaccines that are typically required across the country. Visit the Missouri Department of Health at https:// health.mo.gov/ for the current vaccination requirements here in Missouri. Here’s a list of the most common vaccines:

DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis). This vaccine protects against three serious diseases: diphtheria, tetanus (lockjaw), and pertussis (whooping cough). Children should receive five doses of the DTaP vaccine at the following ages: 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15-18 months, and 4-6 years. Tdap vaccination is also required at 11-12 years old.

MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella). The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps,

and rubella (German measles). Two doses are required. The first dose is given at 12-15 months and the second at 4-6 years.

Varicella (Chickenpox) This vaccine protects against chickenpox. Children need two doses: the first at 12-15 months and the second at 4-6 years.

Polio (IPV). The polio vaccine protects against poliomyelitis, a disease that can cause paralysis. Four doses are given at 2 months, 4 months, 6-18 months, and 4-6 years.

Hepatitis B. The hepatitis B vaccine protects against the hepatitis B virus, which can cause liver disease. Three to four doses are required, typically given at birth, 1-2 months, and 6-18 months.

Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b). The Hib vaccine protects against Haemophilus influenzae type b, which can cause severe infections, and severe infections like meningitis, especially in young children. Three to four doses are given at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and 12-15 months.

Pneumococcal (PCV20). This vaccine protects against pneumococcal diseases, which can cause pneumonia, meningitis, bloodstream infections, and ear infections. Four doses are required at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and 12-15 months.

Influenza (Flu). The flu vaccine protects against the influenza virus. Annual vaccination is recommended for everyone starting at 6 months of age.

Meningococcal (MCV4). This vaccine protects against 4 strains of meningococcal disease, which can cause meningitis and bloodstream infections. Two doses are given; the first at 11-

12 years and the second at 16 years.

Preparing for Vaccination

It’s a good idea to schedule your child’s vaccination appointments well before the school year starts. This will give you plenty of time to address any concerns or questions you might have with your healthcare provider. When you go to your child’s vaccination appointment, bring their immunization records. This will help the healthcare provider determine which vaccines your child still needs.

Our Commitment to Your Child’s Health

Keeping your child’s immunizations up-todate is one of the best ways to protect their health and ensure they are ready for school. Vaccinations prevent the spread of serious diseases and keep our communities safe. Don’t wait until the last minute—schedule your child’s vaccination appointments today and make sure their immunization records are up-to-date. Stay informed and proactive about your child’s health to ensure a safe and healthy school year ahead.

At Community Choice Pediatrics, we understand that navigating your child’s health can be complex and sometimes overwhelming. That’s why we are committed to providing you with the most current information and guidance on vaccinations. Our team of experienced healthcare providers is always available to discuss any concerns you may have and to assist in creating a vaccination schedule that is tailored to your child’s specific needs.
