When should you take Social Security?
One of your important sources of retirement income will likely be Social Security — but when should you start taking it?
You can collect Social Security benefits at 62, but your monthly checks may be up to 30% greater if you wait until your full retirement age, between 66 and 67.
Of course, if you need the money, you may not be able to wait. But if you have enough resources through earned income and your investments, you may have flexibility in deciding when to take Social Security. In this case, you’ll need to look at these issues:
First, think about your life expectancy. If you’re healthy and have a family history of longevity, you may conclude you can afford to wait.
Also, consider your employment. If you’re still working and start taking Social Security before your full retirement age, your benefits may be reduced based on your earned income.
Finally, think about your spouse. Their survivor’s benefits could be permanently reduced if you take your benefits early and accept lower payments.
When to take Social Security is an important — and irrevocable — decision. So, consider all the factors before making your choice.

Investment by definition is the act of devoting time, effort, energy or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. We can invest in a lot of things such as our community, our relationships, our finances, and our health with the hope that the effort will have a positive impact. We can invest in our community by supporting our local businesses, schools and local organizations. We can serve the community through volunteerism and investment in future generations. On a larger scale, we can participate in public surveys and stay educated and involved with future city planning. Investing in our finances helps create wealth, meets longterm financial goals and secures our retirement. On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives that mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact to not only ourselves but to the people closest to us.
While investing in ourselves, relationships, community and finances can look very different from person to person, the effort we put into these areas of our lives are done with the common goal of having a positive impact that yields results. In this issue, we wanted to share about some of the ways that we can invest in our community, our finances and with those that we love.

Which Weight Loss Approach is Right for You?
Do I Qualify?
Individuals seeking a more tailored approach to weight management are ideal candidates for beginning a journey toward optimal wellbeing. If someone is struggling with stubborn weight gain despite adhering to proper diet and exercise, they may qualify for a weight management program. Those with ambitious weight loss goals could also find value in a personalized solution to support their wellness journey.
Appetite Regulation: Semaglutide
Originally utilized for over 15 years to treat diabetes, Semaglutide revealed an unexpected benefit: weight loss. By mimicking the body’s hormone that regulates blood sugar levels and appetite, Semaglutide reduces feelings of hunger, leading to decreased food intake and subsequent weight loss. It has proven particularly effective for individuals who have encountered difficulties with weight loss using other methods.
Fat Utilization & Appetite Regulation: Tirzepatide
Another innovative medical option is Tirzepatide, which activates two receptors via hormone stimulation. In addition to suppressing appetite, Tirzepatide regulates glucose and blood sugar levels while enhancing the body’s utilization of fat through increased energy expenditure. Tirzepatide’s multifaceted approach makes it a promising candidate for managing both obesity and type 2 diabetes effectively.
Increases Energy & Fat-burning: BioBoost
It is designed to provide an extra boost of energy, fat-burning, immunity support, and mental clarity through a blend of vitamins, minerals, and fat-metabolizing amino acids. BioBoost can help regulate sleep assisting with insomnia. Its core ingredients include Methionine Inositol Choline (MIC), also known as Lipotropic Injections, which target primary fatty deposits in the body to aid in fat release. Additionally, it contains essential B vitamins such as B6 and B12, which play crucial roles in energy metabolism, DNA synthesis, and nervous system health.
Benefits of Medical Weight Management
Under careful management by an experienced medical team that customizes dosage to individual needs, the benefits of medical weight management may include:
- Weight loss
- Increased energy levels
- Improved sleep quality
- Better blood pressure control
- Enhanced self-confidence
- Reduced joint pain

THE ART OF COLLECTING

As consumers, we are constantly being enticed to buy. Whether it’s the jewelry we can’t live without, concert tickets to a show we don’t want to miss, or that favorite pair of shoes calling our name, we buy what we love, and art should be no different.
If you are new to acquiring original art, you may find it daunting, but it shouldn’t be. It is a special purchase that forces you to dig deep and discover a bit more about yourself. At first, many people shy away from buying original art because of the commitment. It’s a big decision after all, and how do you really know when it’s the “perfect” piece? Because art is subjective, part of the process is learning what style of art is the best fit for you. Is it colorful and energetic abstracts, or soothing landscapes that catch your eye? Maybe you are drawn to local photography, or even figurative works. There is no wrong answer, and maybe it’s a mix of several styles that create your unique collection.

The best way to find out your “art personality” is to get out and visit your local galleries. Consider making it a tradition to visit galleries while traveling or buy a piece of art as a gift on special occasions. In the gallery setting, you can explore various art styles, mediums, and even learn more about the talented artists who create those works.
With the purchase of original art comes other considerations. Often, we have clients who need direction in figuring out what size of art they need and its placement in the design of their space. If you find a piece of art you love, you will always find a spot for it. Ask the gallery if they offer in-home art consultation services to see the piece in your setting. Great custom framing is key, and well-designed framing is the jewelry to a great piece of art. Quality archival framing protects your art from UV rays that can damage a piece over time. Original art should last generations.
I’m often asked, should I buy art for investment? There is a place for investment art, but I don’t believe in buying art with the pretense that it will go up in value. There is no guarantee it will and to me, good investment art brings different riches to your life. Art that brings you joy, adds personality to your space, and makes your home original is an investment in you. The best art investment should be the feeling you experience gazing into an oil painting that perfectly captures a warm sunset over the prairie, or the texture created by a palette knife on the abstract that seems to pop off the canvas. That is what makes investing in original art priceless.

LET THE SUNSHINE IN WITH SHINE-ON WINDOW CLEANING.

Spruce up your home this Spring!
Clean windows allow more natural light to enter the home, creating a brighter and more cheerful indoor environment, allowing homeowners to fully enjoy the beauty of the springtime scenery outside.
Warmer weather means spring cleaning is on our minds. And window cleaning is not on anyone’s favorite list! That is where Shine-On Window Cleaning comes in.
Justin Henneberg can attest to that as owner of Shine-On Window Cleaning.
“Around nine years ago, after teaching the developmentally disabled for 15 years, I felt ready for a change. While trying to figure out what to do next, I decided to take a job with Shine-On as a window cleaner,” he explained. “I quickly decided that I found the job rewarding and relaxing. This prompted me to buy the Missouri half of the business in 2018.”
Cleaning your windows offers improved aesthetics. He shared that over the winter months, windows, exterior surfaces and gutters accumulate dirt, grime and debris, causing the home to look dull and unkempt. Cleaning them can instantly boost curb appeal, making the home appear fresh and inviting for spring.
As all of us know, looking through dirty windows inhibits light. So clean, shiny windows offer a clearer view.
“Clean windows allow more natural light to enter the home, creating a brighter and more cheerful indoor environment, allowing homeowners to fully enjoy the beauty of the springtime scenery outside,” he continued. “Similarly, clean gutters prevent blockages that can cause water overflow and damage, ensuring proper drainage and preserving the integrity of the home's exterior.”
In addition to cleaning windows, they offer power washing, gutter cleaning and holiday lighting. All the
cleaning services they offer are essential components of spring cleaning for several reasons, including maintenance of property value, as a well-maintained home exterior reflects positively on its overall value.
He mentioned, “By investing in window cleaning, power washing and gutter cleaning as part of their spring-cleaning routine, homeowners demonstrate pride of ownership and ensure that their property remains attractive and marketable should they decide to sell in the future.”
Another thought he suggested is that dirt, mold and debris buildup can actually cause damage to windows, siding and other exterior surfaces over time. Regular cleaning helps prevent deterioration and prolongs the lifespan of these elements, saving homeowners money on repairs and replacements in the long run. Clean gutters also prevent water damage to the roof, walls and foundation, reducing the risk of costly repairs.
“In summary, window cleaning, power washing and gutter cleaning contribute to a cleaner, more attractive home by improving aesthetics, preventing damage and maintaining property value,” he concluded. “Incorporating these maintenance activities into their routine allows homeowners to enjoy a fresh and inviting living environment throughout spring and beyond.”
So, why not cross cleaning windows and such off your list and breathe in springtime!

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE | HEALTH + WELLNESS ARTICLE BY MINDY HARGESHEIMER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLING AUTHOR AND NETFLIX PRODUCER, DAN BUETTNER, INSPIRES A BETTER LIFE I N VESTINGIN YOURHEALT H 28
“If you make the effort to cook it with your family, you will gain the skills and learn to make some good and whole food plant-based recipes.”
What’s the secret to a happy, healthy, and long life? Believe it or not, it’s actually quite simple: There are no secret ingredients, no sizable expenditures, and absolutely zero manufactured elements of any kind. Dive in with us as we share insights from our interview with the internationally renowned Blue Zones Founder, National Geographic Explorer, and award-winning journalist who is revolutionizing the way Americans make choices that can lead to living your best life.
For over twenty years, Dan Buettner has been fully committed to studying the health and longevity of Americans as well as influencing the proper and attainable health-centric environments our communities should embody. What started with identifying five “blue zones” around the
world where people are both living longer as well as enjoying a higher quality of life in their elder years has now also evolved into proactively creating eco-systems where our communities engage in setting the standard for clean health.
If you haven’t subscribed to watching “Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones” streaming on Netflix, do yourself a favor and soak up the well-documented views into how Ikaria, Greece, Loma Linda, California, Sardinia, Italy, Okinawa, Japan, and Nicoya, Costa Rica exemplify the basis behind the Blue Zones truth and have since inspired Dan and his team to further extrapolate how we can manufacture healthy blue zone lifestyles in virtually any city and within our homes by way of intentional adaptation.

Most of us are well aware of the “American way of life” we reside in, that being one of convenience in all shapes and forms. We excel in offering the most fast food options in any country. We rank at the top of the most cars per household. We embrace a sedentary at-home lifestyle. And, for many of us, it stems from our childhood to no-fault of our own; comfort foods and Friday night pizza deliveries, complacent recliners and cushy car commutes. In short, however, now more than ever we categorically live in a country where processed foods and ultra-convenience, unfortunately, translate to life-threatening health diseases and a lack of organic joy.
What is the best news of all? All of these characteristics are wildly easy to overcome with effortless, yet conscious pivots to making better decisions with our time, our food, and our focus. Ask yourself: Are you driving or walking? Are you connecting socially? Set your sights on avoiding the majority of processed foods and start eating a largely whole-food and plantbased diet that will (statistically) give you another 10-12 years on your life.
In place of your toaster, keep a fruit bowl on the counter. Create a low-level junk food drawer. Stop buying processed meat, potato chips, sweetened snacks like cookies and candies, and worst of all, sugar-sweet beverages, and start buying more beans, nuts, grains, and tea.
“Am I going to tell you to never have these? No, people deserve to treat themselves. But you’ll do yourself an enormous favor if you just don’t bring those into your home. If you want to go out for those treats, go ahead,” Dan says. “Simply just don’t bring them home, and you’ll cut out 70-80% of consumption right there.”
Buettner’s first cookbook, The Blue Zones Kitchen, is a fantastic resource featuring ingredients and cooking methods that can increase longevity, wellness, and mental health. The recipes also include lifestyle tips such as proper portion sizes and the best times to eat dinner. Plus, check out his additional seven books that dig deep into the exact foods you should eat, to how your circle of friends and family can influence your quality of life.
Who do you hang out with? Happiness is contagious. “The Blue Zone approach
is to go through your contact base and think of some friends whose recreation is pickleball, biking, or gardening. Who will care about you on a bad day and have a meaningful conversation? Identify one or two friends who are vegan or vegetarian and show you how and where to eat whole foods. Actively invite them out for lunch, and bring them into your social circle: this will have a bigger, long-term impact on your behavior than any new diet or exercise, and it costs you zero. Plus, there is a ton of data that shows it works, and it's long-term.”
“We are marketed the idea that if we change our behavior by exercising more, taking the right supplements, trying this longevity or that anti-aging hack, that we will lose weight and get healthy, yet it never works for the long-term,” says Dan. The Blue Zones approach is not trying to change your behaviors, it is asking you to change your surroundings…your eco-system.
Every time you go out to eat, you will consume an extra 300 calories that are laden with more sodium, sugar, and oil than eating at home. “Get your hands on a plant-based cookbook, pick a dozen recipes, and cook those with your family on Sundays. If you make the effort to cook it with your family, you will gain the skills and learn to make some good and whole food plant-based recipes.”
And, we would be remiss not to attend to the travelers at heart who would love to indulge in a luxurious resort paired with the facets of an actual Blue Zones destination. Dan highly recommends seeking out Silvestre in Nosara, Costa Rica where the experience offers wellness programming, fully-equipped kitchens, and outdoor activities that will fuel your inspiration for a healthier life.
Tap into Dan’s wisdom that is creating a new category of places that are not merely the legacy of a healthy culture, but more consciously created by enlightened individuals that are intent on supercharging healthier communities!

Introducing Glenwood Springs...
“The greatest legacy we can leave our children is happy memories.”
Happy memories await in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Known for its hot springs, the Rocky Mountain resort city is rich with wildlife and sheer beauty. Offering an array of family-friendly activities, the area is home to the esteemed Glenwood Springs Adventure Park, a must-do with amusement rides and subterranean caverns—a magical geological excursion.
Surely, you’ll want to take a dip in the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool. Invigorating and rejuvenating for adults and super fun for kids, there’s a vast splash zone, water slide, diving board, and lap lanes.
Glenwood Springs is primed with pristine river spots; the white water is mild and ideal for guided rafting adventures. You can also rent duckies (inflatable kayaks) or paddleboards.
If you’re going to check one hike off your list, opt for the Doc Holliday memorial, and for older kids, explore mountain biking paths for every skill on the paved Rio Grande Trail. “Never underestimate the importance of having fun.”
Consider Snow Mountain Ranch a fun hub for families; a camp-like atmosphere for those seeking a genuine back-tothe-basics escape. Located in Grand Country Colorado, the YMCA of the Rockies destination is what vacation is meant to be... packed with frivolous play. Awake to breathtaking mountain views and the sound of songbirds, and after an actionpacked day, witness a dreamy sunset from your personal porch.
Accommodations vary; choose between private cabins, spacious lodge rooms, scenic campgrounds, or yurts. Cabins can sleep up to 12, and are equipped with full kitchens, a fireplace, and a deck. You’ll likely spot some deer outside your front door.
Included in all stays: roller skating, swimming, mini-golf, sports, hiking/biking trails, nature walks, and more. But
what makes Snow Mountain extra special are the entertaining “extras.” To make the most out of your stay, partake in archery, axe throwing, horseback riding, arts/crafting, knot-tying, geocaching, and beyond. Plus, there are tons of educational programs that teach guests about local wildlife like bears and wolves. And here’s a tip; if you’re craving some adult-only time, choose to register your child (ages 3+) for summer day camp. Grown-ups can do some adventuring of their own while the kids get a taste of what summer’s supposed to be. And as for food, there’s an array of on-site dining options available.
Everyone will feel like a kid at Snow Mountain Ranch, and the secret’s out; cabins book far in advance, so be sure to secure your spot well ahead of time.

Martin Tax & Financial Services

EXPERT HELP | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES

In the midst of deadlines and paperwork that peak during tax season, Martin Tax & Financial Services helps clients navigate the complexities of taxes and investments with confidence and ease.
At its helm is Laurie Martin, a dynamic force steering the company toward innovation and growth while upholding its longstanding values of excellent customer service, education and tax management.
The founding directive at Martin Tax & Financial Services is to bridge the gap between tax preparation and wealth management. They provide a comprehensive suite of services designed to empower clients on the whole picture, from income tax preparation to investment management to retirement income planning and creating customized financial plans that address all aspects of a client’s financial life. As fiduciaries, they prioritize clients' best interests, forging enduring relationships built on trust and mutual respect.
“We can provide better investment advice because we always take taxes into account,” Laurie explains. “Our goal is to minimize the taxes clients pay on their investment earnings. We want them to keep what they earn.”
The journey of Martin Tax & Financial Services is a testament to the vision of its founder and Laurie’s father, Michael Martin, who established the firm in 1987. An esteemed member of the tax community, Mike teaches advanced tax classes to hundreds of area tax professionals each year and is often asked to speak on the topic. Mike serves as a valuable resource to the professionals who work at Martin Tax & Financial Services.
Bringing a unique blend of legal acumen and financial prowess to the table, Laurie continues to build what Mike started. A graduate of UMKC School of Law, she transitioned to the family business in 2014, infusing it with fresh perspectives and strategic direction. In 2017, Laurie purchased the business from her father, upholding the legacy he established, while determined to propel the firm into a new chapter of growth and innovation.
Laurie says she enjoyed practicing law, but joining the family business allows her the integration of building on what her father started and doing what she likes best: working with clients. “When I was focused on estate planning, I would work with a client and then not see them again for many years. This is more of an ongoing relationship, and I really like that.”
Under her leadership, Martin Tax & Financial Services has evolved strategically, embracing technological innovation and seeking to grow the firm’s team of professionals. Recognizing the importance of adapting to an ever-changing landscape, Laurie has prioritized technology advancements and cybersecurity measures. “Our focus remains on providing superior customer service,” Laurie emphasizes. “We’re committed to staying ahead of the industry trends, including virtual relationships, which are increasingly essential.” Moreover, Laurie has emphasized fostering a culture of continuous learning and development, as well as talent acquisition. She believes that investing in her team’s growth and providing advancement opportunities is paramount, ensuring they are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge to meet the evolving needs of clients, and positioning Martin Tax & Financial Services as a trusted partner for generations to come.
“Our recent move to Lee’s Summit allows us to do a better job connecting with and giving back to our community, which is important to us,” Laurie shares. Their annual coat drive and partnerships with local charities underscore this commitment. They also host an annual shred event each year to safeguard their clients’ interests beyond finances.
As Laurie Martin leads the charge into a new era, the essence of Martin Tax & Financial Services remains unchanged—a trusted community partner tackling the complexities of finance with unwavering dedication and care for their clients.

INDOOR PLANT GUIDE
Investing in indoor plants can not only spruce up your living space, but also bring numerous health and well-being benefits
Bringing the outdoors in with the use of house plants is a great way to add color and dimension to your space. We sat down with Jesse Nelson at Family Tree Nursery, based in Kansas, and discussed the benefits of incorporating plant life into your home. “There are plenty of studies on the health benefits of plants, and the evidence suggests that being around plants and caring for plant life increases overall wellness,” explains Nelson. “Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of purifying the air.” There are a wide variety of indoor plants that work for any space and light situation that you may have. Regardless if you have a green thumb or a black thumb, there are plant varieties that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants to incorporate into your home.
HOW TO | LIFE + CULTURE 44
Anthurium has gorgeous, colorful flowers and is the easiest indoor flowering plant to care for. It comes in a variety of colors including red, white, orange and purple. Anthurium likes to be dry, so let it go bone dry before watering. Fertilize every so often, especially when blooming. These plants do not like direct sunlight and can be repotted every three to five years.
This cascading plant is gaining popularity due to its succulent-like leaves and also because it is fairly easy to care for. The Hope Peperomia likes medium to bright direct sunlight. It does well as a tabletop plant or a hanging plant. Watering is only needed one time a month regardless of plant size.
“Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of purifying the air.”
This is a slow-growing variety that is architectural and compact. This plant is a great statement piece and looks great in an entryway or by a chair. There are a lot of varieties and colors of the Dracaena. They are very resilient in low light and are great for an office space with little or no light. They like to stay on the dry side, so they like to be watered when they are about ½ to ¾ of the way dry. When watering, give it a good soak. Pro tip: A moisture meter can be purchased and used to determine how dry your plant is to help determine when it is time to water again.

REDEFINING RETIREMENT R
FINDING FULFILLMENT AND MAKING MEANINGFUL CONTRIBUTIONS ARE NEW PILLARS OF RETIREMENT.
ARTICLE BY ALAN GOFORTH
FINANCIAL BUZZ | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES

The days of working 40 years for the same employer and retiring with a gold watch and full pension are as outdated as leisure suits and eight-track tapes. Today’s retirees can look forward to longer, healthier lives to spend with loved ones and do the things they enjoy.
However, longer retirements require more savings and income -- often, a lot more. Unfortunately, at a time when they should be increasing savings, many people are facing the headwinds of stock market volatility and record inflation. The good news is that economic realities have encouraged many of them to get their financial houses in order and work with a financial advisor to help reach their retirement goals.
Not all retirement plans should look the same, because every prospective retiree has different goals. Retirement is personal, and what retirement means to you is unique. An advisor can help navigate through these economic uncertainties in volatile times and help you stay on track. A financial advisor also helps take some of the emotion out of investing, helping you stay disciplined and working through the good times and the volatile times in the market.
Edward Jones is on the leading edge of strategies for the new retirement, yet it offers the stability of a company that was founded a century ago. It has deep roots in Missouri, having been founded in St. Louis; locally, they have served the Lee’s Summit community for more than four decades.
Edward Jones understands that each client is more than simply the balance in their bank account or investment portfolio. This is why it focuses on what it calls the four pillars of retirement – health, family, purpose and finances. Taking care of each of these pillars is the key to a fulfilling retirement.
These pillars focus not simply on finances but on the most important components of a healthy, happy retirement.
Health. Physical health naturally declines with age, but research shows that mental health -- psychological and emotional -- actually rises. Overall, health spans do not match lifespans, with older Americans living an average of 10
years in poor health. Cognitive health is of supreme importance and worry for retirees. Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are the conditions they fear most -- more than cancer, a heart attack or even infectious diseases such as COVID-19.
Family. Most retirees draw their greatest nourishment from family relationships. For most Americans today, family extends beyond blood relatives to include “families of affinity.” Generational generosity is the rule, with retirees willing to do whatever it takes, personally and financially, to support family members in need, even when it means sacrificing their own financial security. Retirees without close connections to family and friends face greater risk of physical and social isolation.
Purpose. Retirees with a strong sense of purpose are happier, healthier and live longer. They report deriving their strongest sense of purpose from spending time with loved ones. They also face the new challenge and opportunity of how to use their newfound “time affluence.” They don’t just want to keep busy; they want to spend their time in useful and rewarding ways
Finances. The financial goal of the vast majority of retirees is not to accumulate wealth in itself but to have sufficient resources to provide security and the freedom to live the lives they want. Many retirees find that managing money in retirement can be even more challenging than saving for it. In today’s volatile market, retirees’ greatest financial worry is the cost of health care and long-term care. The key to financial preparation is looking holistically at how one wants to live in retirement, not just at how much money may be needed.
The four pillars strategy lays the groundwork for a life that is rewarding as well as financially secure. After all, for many, the new retirement is about living a fulfilled life with a sense of purpose, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and enjoying time with family and friends.

HOW TO DESIGN A RELAXING SPACE
ARTICLE BY EMILY FOSTER INTERIORS
INVESTING IN HOME DESIGN CAN GIVE YOU A PEACEFUL SANCTUARY WHERE YOU CAN ESCAPE FROM THE STRESSES OF DAILY LIFE. SO GO AHEAD, TAKE THE PLUNGE AND REVAMP YOUR LIVING SPACES – IT’S WORTH EVERY PENNY!
invest inyour living space
There are many things that can help a room feel relaxing, but let’s keep it simple and focus on my top three. I would say that one must incorporate good lighting, great textures, and a decluttered space to truly get the cozy vibes. Let’s tackle each.
GOOD LIGHTING
It’s imperative that there are multiple sources of light in a space. Rooms need a soft warm light, so I always like to use a light bulb between 2,700k and 3,000k. Also, all lights should have the same temperature light bulb to avoid clashing. It’s not enough to just have recessed or pendant lighting. I add a table or floor lamp to a space to truly have ambient light. Candles are a must for me. They can be scented candles (an extra way to add relaxation) or I like to use remote control tapered candles, so I don’t have to worry about cleaning up wax later.
GREAT TEXTURES
Textures are seen in toss pillows, rugs, draperies, throw blankets and furniture upholstery. Textures add color, pattern and visual interest. I like to use at least three different textures to help a room feel lived-in and welcoming.
DECLUTTERING
So many times, a person thinks that every nook and cranny and every wall need to have something, and this is not the case. A decluttered space is actually more relaxing because overcrowding of items doesn’t quiet the mind. Decluttering a space can be overwhelming, I get it, so just do it in stages. You’ll love the outcome when the room is tidy, organized and you are only surrounded with what brings you joy.

Spring Sports Physicals: What Parents Need to Know
As the green grass of spring begins to emerge, so does the anticipation of the upcoming sports seasons for school-aged children. This time of year is pivotal for parents and young athletes, marking the time to prepare for spring sports physicals. These exams go beyond mere procedural check-ups; they are foundational in safeguarding the health and well-being of young athletes.
Understanding Sports Physicals
Sports physicals, formally known as Preparticipation Physical Evaluations (PPE), are dual-purpose. Their primary goal is to affirm a child’s fitness for participation in sports, ensuring it’s safe for them to engage. Additionally, they serve to identify any health issues that could influence their ability to participate or necessitate modifications in their sporting activities. Unlike routine physical exams, sports physicals concentrate on health facets that directly impact athletic performance and safety.
When to Schedule: The optimal timing for a sports physical is four to six weeks before the sports season starts. This timeframe allows sufficient leeway for any necessary follow-up examinations or interventions.
Key Components of a Sports Physical
Medical History Review:This crucial step involves thoroughly reviewing the child’s medical and health history, including any previous injuries, surgeries, and notable family health history. It’s instrumental in spotting conditions that could impact sports participation.
Physical Examination: Following the history review is a comprehensive physical exam.
This exam evaluates the athlete’s readiness, checking for any conditions that might limit their safe participation in sports. Essential assessments include cardiovascular health, musculoskeletal condition, and overall physical development.
Preparing Your Child for the Physical
Encouraging Open Communication: Educating your child on the significance of being open and honest during their sports physical is essential. A clear understanding of their health can prevent injuries and ensure a safe and enjoyable sports experience.
What to Bring: Being prepared is crucial. Make sure to bring any necessary forms, a list of medications your child is taking, and eyewear if your child wears any. Also, compile any questions or concerns you wish to discuss with the healthcare provider.
Addressing Potential Concerns
Following Up on Recommendations: Not every sports physical leads to an immediate green light for participation. Some results may indicate the need for further evaluation or suggest restrictions on certain activities. Adhering to these recommendations is vital for your child’s safety and health.
Encouraging a Healthy Lifestyle: A healthy lifestyle is foundational for young athletes. Encourage your child to adopt habits supporting their sports activities, such as balanced nutrition, proper hydration, adequate sleep, and regular exercise.
A Step Towards Safe Sports Participation
Sports physicals represent an essential step towards safe sports participation. They

ensure that young athletes are physically prepared for the demands of their sports while providing an opportunity to address any health concerns proactively. As parents, your role in this process is crucial. By preparing your child for their sports physical and fostering open dialogue, you’re laying the groundwork for a fulfilling and enjoyable sports season.
Encourage your child to view these evaluations not as obstacles but as integral milestones in their athletic and personal development. The ultimate aim is safe and healthy engagement in sports, offering a foundation for lifelong fitness and well-being.
