It’s time for spring cleaning.
And just as you may decide to tidy up your physical surroundings, you might want to spruce up your financial environment, too.
For starters, think about how you clean windows to help you see the world more clearly. You can also bring more focus to your financial vision, such as reviewing your overall investment strategy to determine whether it’s still appropriate.
And just as you de-clutter your home by getting rid of duplicate objects, you can improve your portfolio by selling redundant investments, such as nearly identical mutual funds, and using the proceeds to help diversify your portfolio.
Also, similar to how gardeners plant flowers and vegetables in the spring, you can plant seeds of opportunity by owning investments that could provide sufficient growth potential for your goals.
Finally, just as spring cleaning may include getting rid of dangers such as toxic chemicals, you’ll want to protect yourself against threats to your income that could derail your financial future.
Spring is a great time for brightening your physical space — and your financial one, too.
Home. So much contained in that little four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable.
Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.”As we thought about home - we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people.
Although the new home construction designs today are undeniably beautiful and functional, I still dream about my grandma and grandpas home that is still standing in Kansas City, 4 blocks west of Prospect, on Brooklyn St. It was originally an old farmhouse that my grandpa built onto with his craftsman carpentry skills. As a child, there was something so intriguing about the tiny house with just 2 little bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs, a kitchen with a passthrough window to the front living room and a tiny back porch only big enough for a washer and dryer. The house was a house designed like a cottage for Snow White. The home lacked walk-in closets and showers, pantry space, garage space, basement storage but offered all of the necessities to host family gatherings and create fun and beautiful memories of birthday celebrations and holidays. I often long for the cozy, intimate, space that the house provided. We are shaped by the memories of the surroundings that we were brought up in and I believe that it is less about the size and more about the feeling we create inside of our homes that matter most.
As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel inspired to focus on what is truly important to you and take away the ideas that will inspire you to fully enjoy your home.
Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.
Happy March!

Age gracefully at Advanced Aesthetic Center, where their highly trained team can help you become the best version of yourself. AAC offers a wide range of treatments including Botox, dermal fillers, peels, laser, facials and more with natural-looking results that stand the test of time.
Becky Hughes, RN-CAC, is the owner and nurse injector who built this thriving practice rooted in a commitment to excellence and continuous learning. Her journey in the medical field started with a diverse range of
experiences, including roles in medical-surgical nursing, family medicine, triage, and community health. Becky also ventured into pharmaceutical sales, gaining insights into the industry from a different perspective. This background laid the foundation for her transition into the dynamic field of aesthetics in 2011.
“My aesthetic practice grew organically over the years,” says Becky. “I got my start in a small one room office right here in downtown Lee's Summit. From there, with the help of my late husband, Robert, I gained experience at one of the premier practices in the U.S. As my business grew, I moved from that location to a larger space and grew the team. Just a few short years later we are at a gorgeous new location, still in the heart of downtown.”
The growth of AAC reflects both the demand for their services and the commitment to providing top-notch aesthetic care. Becky attributes much of her success to serendipitous moments and timely decisions.
CONTINUED >
“There was no specific plan in place to be where I am today—each step fell into place at the right time all along the way, including the team I have built. One example of this is when my initial practice was growing, I knew I wanted to stay in the downtown area but I also knew spaces for lease did not come around often. One day I had to take a route to the practice that I did not normally take and there it was—a for lease sign on the perfect space right at 3rd and Market. I called and signed the lease that day!”
The practice distinguishes itself by adopting a full approach to anti-aging and taking the time to understand each patient's unique needs. The focus extends beyond immediate treatments to encompass overall skin health. Becky and her team prioritize patient education, empowering individuals to make informed choices and set realistic expectations. Understanding that aesthetic goals may evolve, AAC ensures that patients are well-informed and satisfied with their outcomes.
“Botox and filler are cornerstones of what we do at AAC, but we are not a “one-and-done" practice. We look at the entire person at our initial consultation. Botox can give you wonderful results but if you are not taking care of your skin, most patients are not going to be as happy as they could be with their results.
“Our entire team takes a clinical approach to anti-aging. We educate the patient every step of the way so they can make informed choices as well as set realistic expectations. Sometimes patients come in seeing an advertisement for a treatment, but once we discuss concerns, costs, and maintenance, another treatment fits their goals. We want our patients to be well educated about the aging process as that ensures that their aesthetic dollars are well spent, their satisfaction is high, their investment is protected, and natural looking outcomes are achieved.”
Referrals have been the key to AAC's success. The satisfaction of patients has translated into word-of-mouth recommendations.
Becky emphasizes the importance of maintaining good practice standards and a commitment to ongoing education within her team, ensuring AAC remains at the forefront of aesthetic advancements.
“My team is always learning from the best to be the best!”

Home is where we find comfort and rest and is a place where we create memories with those we love most. The Schlicht family wanted to create a space that not only functioned as they needed it to as a busy family of six, but they wanted it to reflect their personal style and personality. We sat down with these homeowners to find out what made the process easier and if they had any wisdom to share with those of us just beginning this process.
WHAT WAS YOUR GOAL WITH THE DESIGN OF THIS HOME, AND WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TO ACHIEVE?
When designing our home, I really wanted to create an atmosphere that not only met the practical needs of our large family, but also felt warm and inviting when family and friends gathered. I wanted spaces that were large enough to entertain and yet cozy and intimate, so that no one wanted to leave. I hoped to make finish selections that were not only beautiful, but practical and usable as well. I also really thought through space planning during design. If the time ever came that we had to sell our home, I didn’t want it to feel so custom that another family couldn’t move in and love it as much as we do.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ASPECTS OF YOUR HOME?
The openness of our main floor has to be my favorite part of our home. I love walking through our double entry glass doors, onto that inlaid tile floor, and being able to see so much of our home
from that space. It never feels cramped but rather open for people to sit in the living room, gather at the table or cook in the kitchen, and everyone is in the same space. There were some finish and design aesthetics that I also incorporated that we love, including the black iron rails, wood stairs, vaulted ceilings, and an abundance of natural light from tall, custom windows and natural stone. I also have some antique doors from my grandparents’ farmhouse. When they passed, my grandpa left them to me. We stripped and refinished them and now they hang in both our master bedroom and mudroom. Even though they’re not completely done, they are incredibly special to me.
TELL US ABOUT THE COLORS AND TEXTURES YOU PULLED IN AND WHY YOU CHOSE THEM.
I am drawn to neutrals but not necessarily just beiges and whites. I love incorporating colors that are found in nature, such as rich browns, shades of green, deep reds, dramatic blacks, and soft whites. With my love of neutral, I try to find ways to make sure my décor is not boring or drab. So, I always use items with loads of texture. I love paper mâché bowls, deer antlers, shells, wood, natural stone, and metals. I also strive to design rooms that are layered with eclectic décor and furniture. I am drawn to modern objects mixed with vintage and antique treasures. I am not afraid to use something unique in unexpected ways.
WHAT PAINT COLORS DID YOU USE?
All the walls in our home are Sherwin Williams Origami White. We also have some accents of Sherwin Williams Iron Ore in our billiards space and lower guest bathroom.
At some point, we just can’t keep up with every new trend that comes along, so do what makes you happy and your home will always feel special.
AFTER GOING THROUGH THIS PROCESS YOURSELF, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR READERS ON SELECTING COLORS AND FINISHES FOR THEIR HOMES?
One thing that I noticed with the design trends that have been coming out for 2024, is that I had incorporated a lot of those same trends when designing our home 3 years ago. For example, I have always loved warm wood tones; natural elements like stone and marble; deep, saturated reds; and statement tile. When I was building, all white kitchens were still trending, and I went with warm gray perimeter cabinets and a richly stained island and hood. I say all of that to say that trends come and go. At some point, we just can’t keep up with every new trend that comes along, so do what makes you happy and your home will always feel special.

Housewife Cafe & Bistro features freshly made breads, pastries, desserts, breakfast and lunch, all made from scratch in a uniquely chic environment that makes you feel right at home. Owner Anna Sorge discovered her passion for baking and cooking as a stress reliever.
“I started cooking seriously at home when I had my fourth child, a NICU baby who cried 12 hours a day, and I started baking as a way to relieve stress,” says Sorge. “I began to get really good and through social media developed a small following. In my career, I have held many jobs—I worked at Dean and Deluca for ten years, spent time in retail management at Nordstrom, Standard Style, and Trader Joe’s, then developed an underground restaurant in Michigan, a cheese and charcuterie board company, and started managing large scale catering and events. My last job was as the general manager of a fine dining restaurant and cafe in Prairie Village. After being told by someone I respect and admire that they couldn't believe a housewife like me could cook better than their executive chef, I knew it was time to open my own place. I had always dreamed of having my own brick and mortar but never had the guts to do it. I figured I wasn't getting any younger and my four children needed to see their mom take a risk and pursue her dreams.”

“We have a small but solid menu with offerings for everyone, including housemade gluten-free multigrain bread. We are focused on the quality of the food and customer experience. We want every customer to feel like they're walking into an extension of our home and we are here to take care of them and serve them some really great food. The almond croissant is the best in the city and our freshly baked brioche cinnamon rolls are the size of a small country. Breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and breakfast burritos fly out the door in the morning. Our avocado toast is unique and completely different from any other avocado toast you've ever had and it's a must try. We are also known for our lunches. We have a sandwich called "The Mayor" named in honor of Grandview's Mayor—it has shaved turkey, provolone, thick cut bacon, pepperoncini, chipotle mayo and apricot mustard toasted to perfection on our house-made focaccia bread and it's our most popular sandwich. We also feature a scratch made soup every day that sells out if you don't come before 2 p.m. My personal favorite is our Lemon Tart. It is sweetened with honey instead of sugar and just a touch of lemon so it's sweet, creamy, with just the right amount of tart and it's served with fresh raspberries.
Starting this Spring, we will feature bouquets for sale and will have monthly events including Cheese and Charcuterie Classes, Floral Arranging Classes, and cooking and baking classes.
Housewife also has a fabulous catering menu and can curate a menu for any event. We have boxed lunches and platters of sandwiches, salads, and bowls of soup for corporate clients and also brunch items, cheese boards, grazing tables, and private dinners for parties and specialty events. This French inspired home is the perfect fusion of grandeur and warmth
The Village of Loch Lloyd is home to a unique residence that seamlessly blends French elegance with modern comfort. With a grandmother with French heritage and New Orleans roots, and a husband having a background in construction, their collaboration resulted in a home that is both a tribute to family traditions and a showcase of architectural prowess.
“The inspiration for our home came from our travels to the Loire Valley, about two hours southwest of Paris, which offers France's greatest array of châteaues. This is where the aristocrats from Paris retreated to hunt. My husband is an avid hunter and I wasn't thrilled to do a home with hunting decor. However, after we visited the Loire Valley, I could see how we could mix our styles.”
The home is full of detail, evident in every room. The staircase draws inspiration from Haussmann architecture, reminiscent of French apartment buildings.
“Haussmann-style architecture is synonymous with modern-day Paris and Montpelier. They were designed by 19th-century official Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann, who revamped the city in a vast project that remodeled over 12,000 structures to match his refined design. The stair rail and exterior iron were custom manufactured by Oriental Ideas.”
The kitchen features 18th-century credenzas, and the brick barrel vault adds a touch of antiquity. The wine nook boasts a brick ceiling inspired by an Italian Villa, and bathrooms showcase stone walls and antique elements.
“18th century credenzas were purchased and dismantled to be used for the facing of the kitchen cabinets and various other areas throughout the house. The wine credenzas were built with antique furniture that was dismantled and we used wine boxes for the drawers.”
Wood herringbone floors, interior stone walls, antique French chandeliers, imported marble fireplace, church spire, archways, and a groin vaulted foyer create a harmonious symphony of elements throughout the house. Imported, repurposed French panel doors and ornate scrolled iron further enhance the old-world charm. The exterior, with recessed and bull-nosed walls, door, and window thresholds, exudes the appearance of a timeless masonry foundation.
“The inspiration for our home came from our travels to the Loire Valley, about two hours southwest of Paris, which offers France’s greatest array of châteaues. This is where the aristocrats from Paris retreated to hunt.”
“Every room has been thought through with an obsession to detail. The home opens from east to west and south. When the weather is pleasant, we frequently open all the doors from the front of the home to a pea gravel veranda and to the back that surrounds the pool and outdoor living area.”
While the road to realizing their dream home was not without hurdles, the homeowners found solace in the expertise of Elswood Smith Carlson Architects, PA. Architects John Mackaman and Weston Coble played a crucial role in understanding and executing the intricate details envisioned by the homeowners.
Describing their style as "Maison de maître," a term denoting a residence with the architectural detail of a château but slightly smaller, the home embodies the essence of the Loire Valley. It's a fusion of grandeur and warmth that defines this unique style.
The couple frequently sources their antiques from Woodson Place, a treasure trove with a historical narrative behind each piece. Their advice to fellow antique enthusiasts: shop for what you like, relish unique finds, and appreciate the stories embedded in each item. The homeowners have woven the essence of France into the fabric of their home. Every corner tells a story, echoing the landscapes and culture they've encountered during their travels.

MOWING DOES NOT NEED TO BE A LABORIOUS CHORE. IT CAN BE A BREEZE
Jester has been in this industry for 30 years and has worked in all facets of the business. He started out working in the service department of a large John Deere dealership as a teen through college. After college, he moved into the sales side of the business.
“I accepted employment with a manufacturer and went on to become a territory manager selling outdoor power equipment to dealerships across the Midwest. It seems that my career path honed me to become a dealership owner,” he expressed. “We started selling zero turn mowers when they were still gaining in popularity. I wanted to represent at least two of the top five mower brands to start and add to our product offering as we grew.”
ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPERT PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONESIn April 2007, the mowing world was transformed by Ralph Jester. He opened Lumax Power Equipment Inc. in Belton to serve South Kansas City, offering a large inventory of Toro, Spartan, Wright Stander and Hustler Lawn Equipment. He also carries a large inventory of ECHO, Shindaiwa, Stihl and RedMax Handheld power equipment, in addition to a large in-stock inventory of repair and replacement parts for all Briggs and Stratton, Kawasaki and Kohler small engines.
Lee’s Summit became his next location in January 2021, so he stretched his reach to Eastern Kansas City.
“I named the company by blending my two sons’ names, Lucas and Max,” he explained. “After April, we obtained all our contracts over the next several months and chose November 7th as our grand opening date. This day happened to fall on the day my wife gave birth to our youngest son. It was a very busy day!”
It wasn't long after opening when they added the top two handheld equipment brands, Stihl and Echo, to be able to offer string trimmers and chainsaws that complimented their mowers.
“Today we find ourselves expanding into the battery powered lines as they gain popularity. I believe our knowledge of the industry and the ability to change our product offering, to meet our local market needs is truly an asset with our customers,” he continued. “Knowledge and expertise is by far the best thing we have to offer our customers. Listening to them, educating them on our products and offering multiple products for them to choose from will always be the way we operate.”
He plans to continue to evolve their product offering to meet customers’ needs including this Fall’s addition of street legal electric vehicles for golf and lake communities. The two things that drive him and are a part of every decision he makes are time and family.
“Saving people time and promoting family is what's important,” he related. “If we can provide our customers with equipment to save their time, perhaps they will gain time with their family.”
Additionally, he wants customers to know he will be here for them after the sale, and truly prides himself on service. Each of his employees is incentivized not on what they sell but on how well they take care of customers.
Since day one, this has been his mission statement: "Success is achieved through hard work and our individual efforts to be the best at what we do."

• Kilz Interior primer

Instructions:
Create the desired design using insulation strips. Simply peel off the sticky backing and attach to the canvas. Be sure to wrap each strip around the back and press firmly. Use staple gun to secure strips to the back of canvas. Add a dap of super glue to any curved areas that appear to loosen. Once your desired design is created, apply a thin coat of Kilz interior primer. Spray paint the entire canvas the color of choice that you would like. Allow to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.
Supplies:
• Joint Compound
• Painters tape
• Canvas
• Drop Cloth
• Putty spatula
• Spay paint
• Putty knife
Use three fingers or design took to create designs across the canvas to your liking.
Instructions:
Spray paint Canvas to create a faux frame and allow this to dry completely. Apply 1-inch painters tape around the outside edge of the canvas. Be sure to crease the edges to create a tight seal to keep the joint compound from getting under the tape. Next, mix the joint compound to soften it up to a creamy consistency. Scoop compound onto the canvas and work around with the putty knife to cover the entire surface. The desired thickness should be about 1/8 of an inch thick all around as the compound mixture will be heavy when dry. Be sure that the compound is the same thickness all around to prevent cracking. Next, use fingers to make vertical lines on the entire canvas. Use three fingers or design took to create designs across the canvas to your liking. Once you get to your desired design, remove the painters tape by carefully peeling up slowly. Allow the canvas to dry for 2-3 days. Spray with a clear glass paint and allow to dry for an additional 24 hours.
As parents welcome their precious newborns into the world, ensuring their health and safety becomes a top priority. One crucial aspect of this is immunizations. Vaccines play a pivotal role in protecting infants from serious diseases and setting them on the path to a healthy future.
Right from birth, newborns receive their first shield against disease: the hepatitis B vaccine. This initial dose provides crucial protection against hepatitis B infection, a potentially serious liver disease.
Within the first two months of life, infants undergo a series of vaccinations, including DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis), RV (Rotavirus), Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b), IPV (Inactivated Polio Vaccine), and PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine). These vaccines are designed to bolster the immune system and safeguard against diseases like whooping cough, polio, and pneumonia, which can pose significant health risks to newborns. Additional vaccinations, including HepB (Hepatitis B) and influenza (seasonal), are administered by the age of six months, providing comprehensive protection against a wide range of infectious diseases.
The advantages of newborn immunizations are numerous. First and foremost, vaccines protect infants from serious and potentially life-threatening diseases. By shielding newborns from infections like hepatitis B, whooping cough, and pneumococcal disease, vaccines significantly reduce the risk of illness and complications.
Moreover, immunizations contribute to herd immunity, preventing the spread of diseases within communities. By vaccinating newborns, we protect them and safeguard vulnerable populations, including individuals who cannot receive vaccines due to medical reasons.
Additionally, immunizations offer longterm health benefits. By preventing diseases and their associated complications, vaccines help reduce hospitalizations and minimize the risk of long-term disabilities, ensuring a healthier future for newborns.
Despite their proven efficacy and safety, vaccines are sometimes met with concerns and misconceptions. It’s essential to address these apprehensions openly and honestly. Vaccine safety is rigorously tested, and the ingredients used are thoroughly evaluated for safety. Common side effects, such as mild reactions at the injection site or lowgrade fever, are typically short-lived and far outweighed by the benefits of vaccination.
Adhering to the recommended immunization schedule ensures optimal protection against diseases. Timely vaccination ensures that newborns receive the necessary immunity at the right stages of development. It’s also crucial to complete missed doses promptly and follow recommended intervals for booster doses to maintain immunity over time.
As healthcare providers, we recognize the importance of partnering with parents to ensure the success of immunization efforts.
