When our kids were younger, our ‘vacations’ involved almost every soccer field and ballpark within a four hour radius. It seemed such a challenge to carve out brief getaways for ourselves; juggling job responsibilities and keeping up a household, coupled with all the kid things, made it tough. I’m sure many of you know all too well exactly what I mean. Perhaps that’s why these days we are seizing every opportunity we can find to travel both near and far. I have a sneaking suspicion that as soon as our grandkids are old enough to be involved in activities and events, I’ll be right back at those same soccer fields and ballparks - and I won’t want it any other way! This issue is loaded with ideas for carving out some time for yourself and others. Whether you’d like to host a group at home and need a mobile bartender, are looking for some fun new date night eateries to try, or want to find an overnight getaway in town or within a couple hour radius, you’ll find some great options. I count my blessings that we are healthy and able to enjoy traveling. Far too many times in the past few years, we’ve lost friends and loved ones, and so if there’s any advice I’d give to those of you still in the thick of the craziness that is parenting dependent children, it would be to take the trip. Go to dinner just the two of you. Pick up the phone and schedule lunch with your friend. The days may drag but the years will fly, and tomorrow is not guaranteed. Choosing adventure,

Owner Amber Masters says her love of throwing parties inspired the creation of her business. “My love for bringing joy to others is one of the primary reasons I started highlands sips + events. The biggest catalyst transpired during

the pandemic when we were remodeling our camper—I was on the hunt for some DIYs on Pinterest and when I was searching, cute trailers that were converted into small business started popping up, whether it be selling flowers, donuts, or like highlands sips, espresso and cocktails. I told my husband that when the world was ready to get back to having fun, I wanted to try my luck at it, and here we are.” Choose from one of their three mobile bars: The Shetland, Skye Bar Cart, and Fizzy. Using art to elevate your home's style It’s no secret, maintaining a home adds value to the most-important investment people make, but many overlook how art can elevate and even express a unique standard of living. “When you include original art in your home you have a home unlike anyone else, so it really has the ability to make your home stand out and carry your personality,” said Megan Hoban with Prairiebrooke Art Gallery. The Overland Park based gallery is a leader in original art and knows first-hand how the right art piece can showcase a residential and commercial space. For more than 30 years, they’ve represented a wide variety of artists and have international, regional and local selections available at different price-points. “Once you buy your first piece of original art, you know the difference, and you truly learn to value the art that’s on your wall as part of the design and part of telling your story,” said Hoban.

Purchasing original art depends on the homeowner’s taste and what they are drawn to.While some may have luck finding a piece on their own, others go to art consultants who can narrow down pieces catered specifically to clients. From landscapes, portraits to abstract pieces; the options are endless, but once found a piece can be a staple in a home. “We really want our clients to love what they’re buying and enjoy it for years to come,” said Hoban. “We want that art piece to be something that’s valued in a home, not just something you want to switch out in a couple of years.” A perk some galleries including Prariebrook offer is the flexibility to bring pieces to homes, which not only helps with selection but also gives clients a better idea of a painting’s size. As for framing, it’s best to select a frame that complements the original piece. Often sticking to a traditional frame is a safe bet, according to Hoban. Next is hanging, which can be a frustrating step, but a good rule of thumb is to have the center of the frame at 57 inches from the ground. Keep in mind, depending on what medium was used to create the piece, some paintings need to be placed in a wellshaded area or dim hallway so they don’t get washed out by the sun’s rays. Overall, Hoban says, if you’re serious about buying art for your home it’s a process that takes time. “It’s not like going and buying a refrigerator,” explained Hoban. ”It’s something you need to have a passion about.” It takes dedication and commitment but once the piece is yours and it’s proudly displayed inside your home, entertainment and appeal will come by easier. “When people come to your home, your art makes your home look different from everyone else because you’ve gone through the effort to find an original piece of art rather than just pick something up from a big box store,” said Hoban. Sunshine and warmer weather bring out the travel bug in many of us. Getting away from it all doesn’t have to break the bank though, especially when there are so many intriguing places to explore in and around Kansas City. From Lee’s Summit to Independence and beyond, there are hidden staycation gems in our area worth checking out this spring and summer. For example, just a few miles north down 291 highways, wine lovers and paranormal enthusiasts can quench both thirsts at the unique and quirky Belvoir Winery in Liberty. Housed in a building that originally served as the home for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), a fraternal organization dedicated to supporting the elderly and orphaned among its members, visitors to the winery can find Missouri wines along with artifacts from the home that includes a preserved Odd Fellow skeleton. Built in the early 1900’s, the Jacobethan Revival architecture of the buildings on the property provides multiple areas indoors and out for relaxing. The winery features a wine-tasting room on the first floor, along with eight standard suites on the third floor, described as luxurious accommodations with historic flair. Guests can stay the night after enjoying wine tasting or participating in one of the many events Belvoir hosts, including monthly paranormal investigation sessions, murder mystery dinner events, and various shopping events. THE BENEFIT OF WELL CHILD VISITS When your child turns three, they’ll start visiting the pediatrician for a well child visit on an annual basis. Just as adults have annual physicals, kids need to check in each year as well. These visits include an opportunity for the doctor to assess your child’s social and emotional growth, language and communication skills, cognitive abilities, and physical abilities. Knowing how your child is progressing through established milestones gives your family an idea of their ability to be successful in a school setting. And for some families who have children with birthdays close to the kindergarten cut-off, the kindergarten roundup enables them to determine if this year or next is the better option. WHAT TO EXPECT AT A KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP CHECKUP Most parents think of pediatric visits for your children as a time to get needed shots. While that’s certainly part of the process, your child’s doctor will be assessing so much more about your child, including their height and weight, hearing, and vision. During your kindergarten roundup checkup, you and your child can expect the following: IMMUNIZATIONS With regular pediatric visits, your child should have received the immunizations needed between birth and three years. By the time they’re four and five, the immunizations they need include DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis), Hepatitis B, IPV (polio), MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), and Varicella (chicken pox). Most pediatricians will also recommend the flu shot annually. And with the FDA approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, that will be another option for your child before enrolling in kindergarten.

PHYSICAL ASSESSMENTS A child who is ready to start pre-kindergarten or kindergarten should have reached several milestones, including an expansive vocabulary and the ability to tell stories; sing songs from memory; count to five; and name colors, shapes, and animals. They should be able to dress and undress themselves, use safety scissors, and jump on one foot. Of course, these are the basics, and your child may excel in some areas and lag in others. It’s important to remember that not all children grow at the same rate and milestones only serve to provide information to your pediatrician to assess your child’s progression. SAFETY As your children grow and gain independence, their safety is of utmost concern to parents and pediatricians alike. You can expect your pediatrician to ask your child what their full name is, the names of their parents, and even their phone number or address. In your kindergarten roundup, your doctor may also discuss stranger safety and what to do if the child feels unsafe. HEALTHY HABITS In addition to your child’s safety, establishing healthy eating and sleeping habits now will help them to be successful as they start school. Your family’s physician may ask what your child likes to eat, what they do for fun, and how much sleep they get, as well as bed and wake times. Children who are four and five should be getting 10–13 hours of sleep each night, and this is a great time to get them used to going to bed at a regular time each night so they’re ready for school in the morning. SCHEDULE YOUR KINDERGARTEN CHECKUP If your child is turning four or five and getting excited about starting pre-kindergarten or kindergarten, make sure they’re prepared with a kindergarten roundup. Schedule an appointment with your pediatrician around your child’s birthday or during the summer before school starts so you have time to get them ready for the coming school year.
