A place for everything, and everything in its place. That’s my vision, but lately my house has felt anything but ‘in place.’ What started as a mission to make my laundry and pantry more efficient and effective has manifested a bit of a mess, but I remain confident the end goal is achievable - even though there have been moments of sheer overwhelm of late. If you’ve undertaken a home improvement project, big or small, you can likely relate. The good news is that our organization and our ‘stuff’ aren’t what make a home. It’s the loved ones, the laughter, and the memories we make that matter most. For the past eight months, our house has been extra full of both loved ones and laughter, as one of our adult children, her spouse, and then our first grandchild, Clarke, have shared our space. Our time together is drawing to a close, as they’ll be moving into their new home soon, and while we are super excited for them it will for sure be a bit bittersweet to not have little Clarke’s smiles and coos to enjoy on a daily basis. Those sweet moments have made every bit of chaos worth it. As we transition back to empty nesting, I have to admit I’m a little excited to reclaim our space, and this issue is the perfect source of inspo for doing just that. As you flip through our pages this month, you’ll find ideas for your own spaces, whether you’re looking for big, sweeping change, or simply seeking small stylistic shifts. There are so many sources of inspiration at your fingertips. Wishing you love, laughter and memory making wherever you hang your hat,

“I started my career by working on my own home during 2008 when times were tough and I had to scrape by Growing up on a farm in the Midwestern plains of Salina, Kansas taught Tamara Day, a creative homegrown do-it-yourself kind of girl, ways of finding old, dilapidated homes in her area to turn into beautiful spaces. Her father, Ward Schraeder, was her original teacher and still works with her today. Tamara and her crew transform big, old houses she finds at bargain prices. While respecting the integrity and history of each home, she integrates modern design, function and style to the space, which is ideal for today’s families. “I started my career by working on my own home during 2008 when times were tough and I had to scrape by but still wanted a great design,” she smiles. “I was able to save here and there, and there we had it, our first Bargain Mansion! I love working on old homes because I think the challenges in an old home are what makes each space have character. It’s really hard to put character and charm into a brand-new build. It’s the work arounds that give you character.” Her interior design, furniture, décor and lifestyle business, Tamara Day Design, was born out of this initial inspiring experience. Day shared they have a lot of design projects going on currently for private clients, both residential and commercial, that she is excited about. In addition, she has worked with RTA Outdoor Living to create a signature outdoor kitchen. Her Cottage X Collection adds a timeless, classic and charming touch to any home. She also recently teamed with RoomMates Décor to create a collection of peel and stick wallpaper.

Her collection features a range of designs, from bright bold patterns to calming neutrals, giving any space that designer’s touch. Add to that her four new rug collections, Kaleen Rugs. The first collection, Juniper, is now available for purchase. She also has a partnership with Quorum and Cyan Design to create a collection hard-wired lighting, ceiling fans and decorative accessories this year. When asked for tips she would give people desiring to design their homes, she comments, “I think the best trend I see happening is people designing what they like, not what’s on trend. I believe the best design always comes from the personality of the home and homeowner. Quirky is good, and color is fantastic!” She truly has her dream job, but it’s a lot more work than it looks on the show. Her own house was her first ‘Bargain Mansion,’ and that is when the executive producer of the show approached her, and as they say, the rest is history. “We have 10 episodes coming to the Magnolia Network this spring, and I’ve got to say, some of these homes are my favorite we’ve ever done!” CONTINUED >

Their four children, Henry, Bobby, Thomas and Nora, keep her on her toes and have plenty of ideas for their busy mom! Lone Summit Ranch through the years A legacy of love ARTICLE BY ALICIA HOLECEK | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED Randy and Linda Sallee, owners of Lone Summit Ranch, are proud to be the most recent caretakers in a long line of keepers of this historic Lee’s Summit property. “We bought the farm in 2015,” says Linda. “When we first came to look at it, I wasn’t that excited about it. The property was in disarray. There were tall weeds, not much grass or landscaping, it was just kinda sad. But Randy was like a kid at Christmas, and he fell in love with it.” She adds with a grin, “I fell in love with it, too.” The Sallees have restored the ranch into a premier event location, hosting more than 70 weddings/
functions in 2022. They are also happy to call Lone Summit Ranch their personal home. Knowing that Lone Summit Ranch has a richly storied past, their goals have been to uphold the ranch’s long-held agricultural traditions and continue sharing the beautiful venue with the community.
THE EARLY YEARS Dr. Bud Hertzog is a lifelong resident of Lee’s Summit and has practiced veterinary medicine in the area for 66 years. He remembers the land initially as CONTINUED >

the Bruce Dobson Farm, an expansive tract of farmland that extended both north and south of 50 Highway. Dr. Hertzog recalls the first time he visited the farm, “I was in high school in the mid 1940s and the farm was then owned by Ralph L. Smith. He had Angus cattle and bought a bull called Prince Eric of Sunbeam for $25,000. In those days, nobody ever heard of paying that much for a bull, so people came from everywhere to see Prince Eric.” By the time Bud graduated high school, the farm had switched hands again, this time to the Knaus Family, who operated the land as a dairy farm.
DUTTON BROOKFIELD ERA Dutton Brookfield, a prominent personality who twice ran for Mayor of Kansas City and was the KC Sports Commissioner who helped establish the Harry S. Truman Sports Complex, owned the farm from 1972 until his death in 1979. He christened it Lone Summit Ranch, and the name has stuck. Dr. Hertzog says Brookfield brought in prize Hereford cattle and renovated the ranch into a showplace. A staunch supporter of all things Mizzou and Chiefs, Brookfield was known to host many events at Lone Summit Ranch. The Sallees have photos from that era, including one with Brookfield, Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford, and Dandy Don Merideth enjoying a Monday Night Football
party at the ranch. Mr. Brookfield also commissioned paintings of the ranch, which are still displayed at the Lee’s Summit History Museum.
THE GIBSON FAMILY As the next owners of Lone Summit Ranch, John and Judy Gibson kept the party spirit alive. While they mainly utilized the land for crop farming during their 35 years of ownership, they also owned an event and catering business that transformed the facilities into a reception venue.
LONE SUMMIT RANCH TODAY Now a 500-acre working farm with crops and cattle, as well as 128 acres of event amenity space, the property keeps the Sallee family busy. Randy focuses on the daily operation of the farm. His career as a home builder and developer comes in handy with the never-ending list of projects. Linda, a former labor and delivery nurse, always dreamed of being a wedding coordinator. Lone Summit Ranch hosted its first wedding under her watchful eye in 2016, and the business has been growing steadily since into a one-of-a-kind event destination. Linda says they have worked tirelessly to renovate most of the buildings on the ranch over the last seven years, but they had good bones with which to work. “It has been a lot of work, but it’s been a labor of love.” CONTINUED >

Local lender lights the way for future homeowners

To illuminate means to bring light, and local mortgage lender Luminate Home Loans strives to do just that - bring light and hope to prospective homeowners in Lee’s Summit and across the country. The Lauren Wittig Team, a female-led group of professionals who themselves are businesswomen, moms and engaged community members juggling the demands of personal and professional lives, is working to help aspiring homeowners one at a time. Originating branch manager Lauren Wittig is proud of the women-only team she’s assembled and the work they do to educate and empower prospective homeowners. The team partners with ReMax Beginnings KC, among other real estate agencies, to accomplish their goal of helping buyers confidently navigate the mortgage process. “We work with a number of real estate agencies, but we love being preferred partners with Beginnings KC because we share a mutual commitment to relationships first, business second, along with being dedicated to making a difference in our community,” says Wittig. “I got to know the team at Beginnings KC through our collective involvement in organizations such as Wise Women and the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, and I have a ton of respect for the work they do.” Wittig and crew don’t just talk the talk of making a difference; they are walking the walk. This year she, along with loan partner Hannah Benson and senior loan processor Rachel Van Hecke, has implemented a 12 Months of Charities program, where they are engaging their team and clients, along with any friends and family who’d like to participate, in supporting a different local non-profit each month.
“Our goal is to help others, not just with home loans but with building relationships and serving our community. In January we volunteered at Hillcrest Transitional Housing, February was Coldwater, and this month we’ll be helping at Hope House.” As a young mom, Wittig recognizes the importance of work/life balance and the value of team building while giving back. Who knew Lanni Edwards’ trip to a brewery in Arkansas would give creative inspiration for the new restaurant she and husband Josh were working to open in Downtown Lee’s Summit? Well, that trip - and a little wine - proved to be the start of the stylish juices flowing as they opened Calaveras, a sleek Mexican joint in the former (and now unrecognizable) Peanut bar and grill on Southeast Main Street. The Edwards, along with Josh’s dad, Jeff, took possession of the building on Jan. 1, 2020. Some two years and ten months later, they opened the doors. What happened in between was a series of inventive and visionary design moves that brought the lustrous, date-night look to Calaveras. In the beginning, Lanni said the biggest struggle started with balancing the look of black lacquer and hues of cobalt blue and hot pink. “We were in Mountain Home, Ark., at Rapps Barren (brewery) and all the sudden I got some inspiration,” Lanni explained, noting she decided to ditch the blues and pink for a black-forward look. “And I loved the wallpaper at J. Rieger’s, too. There were a few things that went into our inspiration. “The whole idea of chandeliers and black was always our goal.” Diners at Calaveras are, indeed, visually drawn in by the experience of the beautiful, polished look inside the historic building, which was taken down to ‘white box’ status before being put back together in their vision. Lanni and Josh had an “old school, 1920s, Manhattan, New York bar” concept in mind. There was also some must-have decor on Lanni’s list: Day of the Dead. Calaveras is adorned with hundreds of skulls and artwork celebrating the heritage. “We were getting purse hooks for the bar at Home Depot and Josh looked up and saw the skulls, so we bought one, spray painted it and then we were hell-bent to find the rest from all over the country,” Lanni said “We didn’t want to be too risque with the CONTINUED >

artwork, so we set out to find that balance of not too suggestive and not too cartoonish.” And, of course, Sebastian the Marlin - a nod to Ernest Heming way - oversees diners near the entrance/exit to the kitchen. “That was important to us,” Lanni said, noting husband Josh has a marlin tattoo. “That’s really where I started to find my stride. Hemingway, rum, cigars, ocean life. It was all coming together.” Even the restrooms have proven memorable for customers at Calaveras. “I wanted ladies to feel sexy in the women’s bathroom and men to feel manly in the men’s bathroom,” Lanni said. Having opened Smoke Brewing Company six years prior, the Edwards compiled quite a list of restaurant ‘dos and don’ts’ along the way. Moving the bar at the former Peanut wasn’t even a question. More two-top tables. Adding a customer area
at the front near the bar. Garage doors in the front. All of it would be incorporated into Calaveras. “We wanted to open up the space as much as we could,” Lanni said. “This is the golden spot in our downtown. The park, train depot, where they hold the Mayor’s Tree Lighting. We wanted as much openness to our adorable downtown area as we could get.” Creating a space where key members of their team - executive chef Josh Laufketter, who hails from James Beardaward-winning restaurant Bluestem; bar manager Jesse Bowen - a triple threat as a Level-1 Sommelier, Certified Beer Server and Bar-5 Day Graduate; and new general manager Josh Ballinger - felt comfortable to flourish was important. Creating a sexy spot, a late-night place. That was the goal, too. And Lanni got to do a little shopping along the way. “A little bit of drinking wine and shopping online during COVID, not going to lie,” she said. “It’s a fun space to be in, but I have a love affair with it.” COMING SOON Calaveras’ outdoor deck will be a destination this summer as the Edwards open their frozen cocktail bar, complete with custom begonias from Farrand Farms. It will feature six rotating flavors of frozen drinks, bringing a tropical feel to the alleyway in downtown Lee’s Summit. CONTINUED >

Screen Time and Children: What’s the Best Approach? If you’re a parent in the 21st century, you face a problem the last generation of parents never dealt with: screen time. As with anything in the realm of parenting, there are varying stances on the topic. Do you limit it? Use it as a reward or punishment? And what’s included in the definition of “screen”? There are plenty of opinions when it comes to screen time, but most professionals concur that there are plenty of negatives to spending too much time in front of a phone, tablet, computer, or TV. There are also some benefits. THE ISSUES WITH SCREEN TIME No matter how old a person is—from infancy to old age—too much of anything is often just too much. Such is the case with screen time. Sitting in front of the TV or playing games on an iPad means you’re not walking or playing, and that can lead to obesity. Attention spans are tested by spending a lot of time in front of a screen. And we’ve all heard what blue light can do to our ability to fall asleep and get restful sleep. That’s not all, though. An overabundance of screen time can lead to cognitive issues as well. Harvard Medical School reports that digital play can lead to “impoverished” brain development. When kids aren’t bored, they don’t think on their own; serving them up an endless menu of activities means their brains aren’t stretched to create. The immediate reward of staring at screens all day can, at its worst, lead to addiction issues and an obsession with devices. HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children younger than two years of age should not have access to screens at all. They further encourage parents to limit the screen time of older children to one to two hours a day. Is that practical? Some parents may say absolutely, while others will argue that their children are learning from TV or an iPad. Still others may need the quiet that comes from distracting a child with a phone or other screen. Remember that screen time isn’t really good for any of us— regardless of our age. While many adults spend their working hours in front of a computer, Reid Health reports that no more
than two hours outside of work should be spent in front of a TV, phone, computer, or tablet. To put that into perspective, adults currently spend an average of 11 hours per day in front of a screen, and that number skyrocketed to 19 hours during the pandemic lockdown. Children aged 8 to 18, as reported by the CDC, average 7.5 hours of each day in front of a screen, and nearly half of that is TV time. For the younger crowd, Common Sense Media tallied 49 minutes a day for infants to age two, 2.5 hours for children aged two to four, and a little more than three hours for those aged five to eight. BENEFITS OF SCREEN TIME With all this negativity surrounding the topic, experts agree screen time is not all bad. Even infants can interact through video calls with family, which became the norm during lockdowns. Likewise, virtual learning was a regular occurrence throughout 2020 and 2021, which helped many children stay on track while they were home. There are other potential benefits of screen time for children, according to Parents. Interacting with others can improve socialization, some games teach critical-thinking skills, educational games and ebooks may help with school readiness in younger children, and hand-eye coordination and fine-motor skills are part and parcel of pushing those little buttons.
