Talking to Your Kids About Social Media Safety There are so many questions to address when it comes to your kids and what they do online, whether on their computer, phone, or tablet. The news is littered with stories of children and teenagers who are bullied on social media, and you no doubt want to protect your children in this digital age. Talking to your kids about social media safety is an important (ongoing) conversation, and you may need to start it sooner than you think. Even children in elementary school are online, so arming them with the tools they need to ensure their mental wellbeing is crucial.

THE INTERNET IS FOREVER Perhaps one of the most important privacy issues your children need to understand about social media is that what they think is private isn’t always. Digital permanence is the technical term for information that lives online forever. Once something is uploaded—even on a site such as Snapchat, which is designed to delete content after a certain time period—it can be copied, downloaded, or found again at a future date. When your child is starting to get involved in online endeavors, whether on a social media platform or a blog, talk to them about social media safety. Tell them to check their privacy settings and make everything private to only them and those with whom they are connected. The easiest way to accomplish this is to Google “privacy settings” plus the platform of choice. These can be changed on the app or computer. Remember that many platforms default to making everything public, so this is an important first step. After privacy settings are enabled, reiterate how important it is to monitor what is shared on social media. If your child wouldn’t want you to see what they post, they’re better off not posting it online.

CONSIDER CONNECTIONS Some people approach social media with a mindset of connecting with anyone who requests it. Others prefer to keep their online network limited. There’s no right or wrong way to approach this situation, but for social media safety, help your children understand that the people they’re connected to will be able to see everything they post. On some platforms, connections of connections can also see your posts.

Just as privacy settings help to limit an online audience, keeping connections to a minimum also limits who sees the information your children share. Remind your children that social media safety means only accepting connection requests from trusted family and friends, as well as reviewing connections regularly to ensure the right people are in their networks.

AVOID SHARING ANYTHING TOO PERSONAL While your children may think that it’s fine to share on social media the fact that they’ll be going out of town, that’s the kind of thing people look for. Even someone your kids consider to be a friend could take advantage of the fact that “my parents are gone” to suggest a party in their absence. And it’s not just kids who forget not to share personal information online. Adults can get excited about vacation plans and let everyone know they’re heading out of town. Of course, that means their houses will be empty, which invites trouble. Caution your children that, for their social media safety, they should avoid sharing personal information such as travel plans, address, phone number, or school location. Social media is built to tag locations, and we all tend to do it, so keep reminding them. And be a good role model by sharing with your children the things you’re posting and how you’re being aware of your own social media safety. That’s not to say they can’t share pictures of things that happened at school or on vacation; just don’t say which school or when they’re away from home.

January is probably my least favorite month that ends in ‘y’. Heck, it might just be my least favorite month, period. The holidays are over, the weather is gloomy, I typically need to shed a few extra pounds I found while overindulging during said holidays, and did I mention the weather is gloomy? Every cloud has its silver lining, though, and I think January can redeem itself with a little intentional rebranding. Let’s take our mocktails for example. They’re fun to look at and easy to make, and they won’t bust your calorie goals for the day. You won’t have to feel a bit guilty about indulging! Then there’s the pleasure of a fresh, foamy latte from a fun new coffee and tea shop in town - if it weren’t cold outside, we wouldn’t savor the warmth of a steaming cup of joe nearly as much, right?? Taking this rebranding to a personal level, I’ve decided that 2023 is going to be all about me - not in the ‘I’m going to treat myself to all the things’ kind of way, but rather in the ‘I need to hold myself accountable in practicing what I preach’ kind of way. I’m really good at encouraging others to stay physically active and commit to eating more fruits and vegetables, but I’ve grown lax myself, and I don’t much like what I see when I look in the mirror. That’s what I’m looking forward to in the beauty of a fresh new day, month and year - I get to choose what I make of it, and this year I’m going to do my darnedest to choose positive self-care each hour of each day. I invite you to join me on this journey. Hopefully, by the time it’s all said and done, I’ll be so proud of my self-discipline and progress toward healthfulness that January will have become my new favorite month that ends in ‘y’!! I’ll keep you updated….

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL STRIVES FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE FOR ALL.

Catholic high schools have long been recognized for their academic excellence. As many area families recognize, they also prepare well-rounded students for successful lives after graduation. St. Michael the Archangel Catholic High School in Lee’s Summit has experienced impressive growth since it was founded in 2017 on the legacy of Archbishop O’Hara and St. Mary’s high schools. More than 400 students from 47 zip codes now attend the co-ed school. “From the inception of St. Michael, growth has been steadily increasing,” Principal Mary Korening said. “Parents and students desiring a strong academic curriculum, while growing deeper in their relationship with God, have found that in St. Michael the Archangel. Our faculty and staff focus on the whole student and challenge their students beyond what they ever thought they could accomplish. We provide opportunities for students to achieve success in athletics, grow in positions of leadership, provide service to those in need and deepen their faith.”

Developing the whole student begins with the school’s Community System, the very heart of the school. On day one, each student becomes a member of one of the four communities, and within that community they are a part of a house. Each house provides the unique opportunity for students to interact socially with others across all grade levels. Community activities, led by elected Community Captains, supplement academic pursuits and provide students with opportunities for fun, fellowship and faith. The school’s theme for this school year, ‘Walk Together,’ reflects how students are all walking together on their journey of growing closer with Christ and each other. Regular faith formation activities include retreats, Adoration, Encounter and Mass. A full-time chaplain and four Dominican sisters offer support and guidance in a student’s faith formation. “St. Michael is proud of our Catholic faith and puts that at the forefront of all we do,” said Father Paul Sappington, Chaplain and Director of Faith Formation. “While never compromising on our mission, we are happy to welcome students of other faiths -- or no faith -- if they are willing to follow our guidelines. We hope that their experience at our school strengthens them not only for their future academic success but also to help come to know and love Jesus Christ more.” Although the academic curriculum is rigorous, St. Michael offers specific programs to help every student succeed at every level from trade schools to inclusive education. Partnering with several area career and technology centers, students can experience a potential career field while earning college credits or advanced certifications. The St. Michael Inclusive Learning Enhancement (SMILE) Zone is serving students with exceptional

needs supported through the MOScholars fund. In addition, 50 junior and senior student peer mentors offer guidance under the supervision of certified special education teachers. They assist not only in the classroom, but also with field trips, social activities, and serve in the Guardian Grind coffee shop on site. Success has not only been achieved in the classroom for St. Michael, but this emerging school has also been setting records and claiming titles in 23 different sports for boys and girls. Just this fall season, St. Michael claimed the conference championship titles in cross country, football, volleyball and boys soccer; district championship titles in cross country and volleyball, along with 77 individual post-season honors including seven Guardians with all-state honors. In addition to claiming recognition in sports, the theater department performed to a sold out crowd all three nights of their production. There was a total of 57 cast members involved in producing, set design, costumes and performing. Giving back to the community is a fundamental piece of Catholicism and supports the school mission to Know Truth, Love God, and Serve Others. Each student at St. Michael completes 25 hours for their Christian Service Project each school year, giving students an opportunity to serve the poor, the oppressed, and marginalized groups of people. As part of their theology final at the end of the year, students present about their experience, challenges, lessons learned, and how they grew in virtue. In December, the St. Michael drumline and chamber choir were invited to take part in community activities such as the Mayor’s Tree Lighting event and a Thanksgiving senior luncheon through the Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation. Nearly all St. Michael graduates go on to college, and the 2022 graduates earned an impressive $3 million in scholarships. Even more importantly, students leave with a commitment to serve God and others. “The goal is for every student to reach his or her full God-given potential,” said Lamar Hunt Jr., President of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic High School. Parents are invited to learn more about whether a St. Michael education is right for their child through private tours, Guardian for a Day (shadow with a Student Ambassador) and free middle school nights. Two upcoming admission events include: Basketball Middle School Night where any middle school student will be admitted free to both boys and girls’ varsity basketball games on January 6, and the High School Placement Test on January 21, for all incoming freshmen who want to be considered for acceptance in the next school year. “A high school experience is about discovering your gifts and how to share those gifts with others,” Hunt said. “We desire for our students to become the best version of themselves. They do that by engaging with others and learning how to manage their schedule, interacting with others with courtesy and kindness (e.g. seeing the good in others) and by inviting others, through friendship, to become a part of something that builds character and sincerity.” For more information or to apply, visit www.smacatholic.org/applynow.

FROST COFFEE AND TEA REVIVES LEGACY Blending new beverage options and a time-tested donut tradition in downtown Lee’s Summit. ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPERT PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

If you grew up in Lee’s Summit, you likely remember Jack Frost Donuts from back in the day. This original space at the corner of SW Main and Third Street is now home to the newly opened Frost Coffee & Tea and offers donuts made from the original Jack Frost Donuts recipe. The donuts are available every Friday and Saturday, in addition to many one-of-a-kind daily pairings. The location was most recently Wise Wealth Financial Planning from 2014 to 2019, when the owner decided he wanted to open a coffee shop. Paul Brock worked there, and when they decided to convert it into a coffee shop, his love of coffee made him the ideal person to take the reins.

“When we decided to open Frost Coffee & Tea we had two primary areas of focus, the customer experience and the quality of our products,” Paul, General Manager, explains. “When it comes to ‘customer experience’ we want each guest to be treated like a friend and not just a customer. When it comes to quality products, we are committed to making great drinks from renowned roasters and loose leaf tea providers.” In their desire to bring in something unique to our area, they use Copper Canyon Coffee Roasters out of Springfield, MO for their beans, so people can experience a different flavor. “We offer our own house-made syrups, both regular and sugar-free. We also make our own almond butter. And, we have traditional milks as well as our house made oat, almond, and

coconut milks,” he continues. “We want to control the ingredients to keep it simple and make sure we can offer gluten free options as well.” They have 12 or more inviting loose-leaf teas always ready to brew, along with specialties such as Nitro Arnold Palmer, which is an amazing blend of lemonade and tea, on tap. Another drink to try is their red latte, which is made from Rooibos tea leaves from South Africa. The tea leaves are red, so when you brew it it’s red. They use an espresso machine to make it, then pour milk over it. “Frost also offers a variety of foods. Just like the drinks, we wanted people to have something of a choice when it comes to food,” Paul said. “We have the ability to make any of our

sandwiches gluten free. Also, we use local bakeries for all of our pastry items, including specific gluten free and keto kitchens.” They are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with tempting options for breakfast, lunch and snacks. They invite groups to meet here, moms to gather after they put their kids to bed and students who need a place to study. On weekends they offer scrumptious desserts so people going out on the town can come in for coffee or tea and dessert after dinner. “When we created our shop, we wanted to be welcoming and inviting for everyone,” Paul notes. “So, whether you love coffee or tea, whether you prefer donuts or gluten free pastries, Frost has something to please your unique tastes and preferences.” Frost Coffee & Tea is located at 300 SW Main Street, downtown Lee’s Summit. How to Make Rosemary Simple Syrup Combine sugar and water in a pot and cook over medium heat. Cook until sugar is completely dissolved. Turn off heat and toss in rosemary sprigs. Cool completely.

ingredients: Thyme Simple Syrup • 1 cup cane sugar • 1 cup water • 1/3 cup fresh thyme Grapefruit Thyme mocktail • 3 cups water • 1 cup fresh grapefruit juice • 1/3 cup thyme syrup • Ice

directions: How to Make Simple Syrup Combine water and sugar to a pot. Bring to a boil then simmer for a few minutes. Remove from the heat, add fresh thyme and steep. How to Make Grapefruit Thyme Mocktail Rim glass with sugar if desired. Fill glass with ice. Add 3 tablespoons thyme syrup to each glass and fill with 1/2 cup grapefruit juice and approximately 1 cup sparkling water. Garnish.

Harry Potter Butter Beer ingredients: Butter Beer • 2 liters of Creme Soda • 2 Tablespoons Butter Extract • 2 Teaspoons Rum Extract Creme Topping • 7 ounce container of Marshmallow creme or fluff • 1 1/2 cups whipping cream • 1 teaspoon rum extract

directions: Add rum extract and butter extract to the 2 liter of cream soda. Close lid and gently mix. Prepare topping by combining the marshmallow creme, whipping cream and rum extract. Beat on high for a few minutes until peaks appear. Add a few tablespoons of whipped topping to the bottom of glass. Pour cream soda over topping. Enjoy!

There’s nothing quite like snuggling up with a blanket, sipping on a steaming mug of coffee or tea and losing yourself in a good book. If it’s been too long since you gave yourself permission to do so, perhaps part of your New Year’s resolution can include reading at least one book a month in 2023. Books can take you places, and who doesn’t love a good adventure? I tried to pick several genres and titles I’ve loved myself and also provide suggestions on things you might like if you’ve already read them. Checking in with friends to see what’s currently at the top of their must-read list is a great idea too - or even better, organize your own book club this year.

Summer Island by Kristin Hannah Hannah is known for modern and historical fiction (The Nightingale is one of my absolute favorites, but I lent it to a friend and thus couldn’t provide a photo), and Summer Island doesn’t disappoint. Relationships between mothers and daughters can be strained, and as you unfold Ruby’s story of why she hasn’t spoken to her mother for the past 10 years and the relationships she reinvigorates along her journey to reconciliation, you’ll find yourself both laughing and crying. If you’re a fan of historical fiction, I also enjoyed The Pilot’s Daughter by Meredith Jaeger and Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, which was recently released as a movie and does a great job of aligning with the book.

It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover Hoover is a ‘hot’ fiction/romance writer right now, known for intense storylines and shocking endings. It Starts With Us is a prequel to 2016’s It Ends With Us, which explores the difficult topic of abusive relationships. Main character Lily is navigating life as a single mom, co-parenting with her abusive ex, Ryle, and healing, when her first love Atlas surfaces again. Will she be able to re-engage with Atlas, or will Ryle sabotage their relationship? Check it out, as well as It Ends With Us, which tells the story of Lily and Atlas’ initial relationship. If you can’t get enough of Colleen Hoover, Reminders of Him is another great read that will have you exploring grief and forgiveness.

Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter Although I read this one several years ago, I enjoyed unraveling the story of Dee Moray, an aspiring actress who is all but destroyed by an ambitious Hollywood publicist vying for power and the Italian hotelier who becomes infatuated with her. It toggles between decades-old Italy and modern day west coast settings, satirizing the the film industry while bringing relationships full circle. Other light reads I’ve liked lately include The Hating Game by Sally Thorne and Beach Read by Emily Henry. These are fun vacation selections you can set aside and come back to easily.

Calico Joe by John Grisham Famous for his legal thrillers, Grisham has branched out in a number of genres through the years. A fictional novel inspired by the real-life story of Ray Chapman, the only professional baseball player killed by a pitch, Calico Joe tells the story of Joe Castle, a promising player whose career is ended by a beanball. For those of you who enjoy inspirational and encouraging genres, I also highly recommend 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper, Letters From Dad by Greg Vaughn, and Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty. So many awesome options out there for enriching your life.
