Understanding Your Child’s Growth and Development Milestones As a parent, your primary goal is to raise healthy, happy children. That’s why you take them to the pediatrician for regular checkups, provide them with proper nutrition, give them age-appropriate toys, and smother them with love and opportunities to grow their little minds. It’s also important to know how your child is progressing through growth and development milestones. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has just made that last step a lot easier with the release of several resources for parents, including an app that tells you where your child is in comparison with norms for their age group.
Why Understanding Growth and Development Milestones Matters
Crawling, walking, talking, eating solid food…these are all hallmarks of early childhood development. But many parents have questions about when these are supposed to happen. “Is my child normal?” they question. Perhaps you’ve had a similar question about your child. One study found that nearly a quarter of all parents have worried that their child had developmental delays, so if you have concerns, you’re certainly not alone. If there is an area where your child is not progressing and meeting those milestones, knowing earlier rather than later is key. And even if your child is perfectly on track, that knowledge can put your mind at ease. Having a tool to understand what the growth and development
milestones is incredibly helpful for parents. It can also alert you to any issues that warrant a trip to the pediatrician. That’s why the CDC’s free Milestone Tracker app is such a valuable resource. It helps you keep track of your child’s progress from two months to age five, the most important development years for young children.
Partnering CDC Resources with Pediatrician Visits The best way to use the resources provided by the CDC is twofold: 1. To ensure that your child is on track with growth and development milestones. 2. To use as a tool to communicate your child’s progress with your pediatrician. By using the app, you can keep track of what you and your child are experiencing during those important formative years. This month’s issue celebrates some phenomenal men in our community, and as I reflected on each of their stories, I couldn’t help reminiscing on some of the men in my own life and my gratitude for them. The first is my dad; he has been gone for almost 25 years, but I can still close my eyes and almost feel him in the room. There are so many things I learned from him (including how to drive a stick shift, because every girl should know how to do that, right?!), but one of the most valuable lessons was the satisfaction found in using your hands to complete a project. We spent a lot of time together working on houses; as school teachers my parents worked hard to provide for the four of us kids, and so they were the pioneer version of Chip and Joanna - although my dad would have been mortified to have a camera crew monitoring our painting progress! Then there’s my husband. They say women often marry men who resemble their fathers, and I think I can safely say I have contributed to that case study, as he is also gifted with all things home repair and renovation. From tiling to painting to building an awesome outdoor fireplace, I’m lucky to have a guy who morphs my honey-do lists into awesome home improvements. I probably take his talents and hard work for granted more than I should, but I hope he knows how much our girls and I appreciate everything he does for us. There are other sweet things I could say about him, but we’ll keep his macho reputation intact for now! I don’t mean to paint a picture of perfection, as I think both my dad and my husband would say they were/are perfectly imperfect works of progress, but they each have lived with integrity and served as role models for their families. At the end of the day, that’s what I think most of us would want our spouses, families and friends to say of us - at least that’s the case for me. So this month, while you’re reading about our issue’s featured larger-than-life men, I hope you’ll celebrate the perfectly imperfect men in your own life as well.

Dreaming of becoming a professional athlete is a common aspiration, but it’s one that is statistically improbable; fewer than two percent of all high school athletes go on to play Division 1 sports, and fewer than two percent of those collegiate athletes turn pro. Subsequently, the odds of one family having three Division 1 athletes and two who have gone on to professional careers would likely be similar to one person being struck by lightning three times, but that’s exactly the way things have played out for local soccer phenoms Kyle, Cole and Caden McLagan. All three young men attended Rockhurst High School and boast impressive academic and athletic resumes, including MSHSAA AllState and All-Region honors. After successful collegiate careers at Furman University, where they were both decorated players with NCAA tournament showings, Kyle is currently playing for Vikingur Reykjavik in the top professional soccer league in Iceland and has played on loan for the Kansas City Comets during his off season, while Cole is playing for Sporting KC II. Caden is playing collegiately as a sophomore at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota.
Coming by their athleticism naturally - dad Doug McLagan played professionally for the Comets in the 1990s, while mom Christine McLagan was part of the Olympic Development Program and played for George Mason University - the McLagan boys grew up around the game, watching their parents coach numerous club soccer teams. They each recall fondly the spirited soccer competitions that prevailed during almost every family gathering growing up, citing their competitiveness as a significant contributor to both their relationships and their accomplishments. Perhaps most impressive about this family, though, is its groundedness. They don’t find their identity in soccer but instead feel soccer has taught them the most important lessons about life. Kyle says “I do see myself as a soccer player and an athlete, but overall soccer has afforded me life experiences outside of soccer that may not have been otherwise available. I have become a student-athlete, college graduate, world traveler, and better person/team player thanks to soccer.” CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/L E E S S UM M I T

Kyle adds that living overseas has its pros and cons. “Life can get lonely very quickly when things aren’t going well in soccer, and it can be difficult to have a social life because of how much of a time commitment soccer can be. On the other side, living in Europe has given me the opportunity to travel to several countries with ease; I have seen ~16 countries since coming over in 2018. And of course, one of the biggest pros is that I am being paid to chase a ball around Europe and play the game I love.” Similarly, Cole says soccer has helped him become who he is today. “A ball at my feet seems to cure whatever problems or adversity I am facing. It’s taught me how to be resilient, how to compete, how to push myself to limits you don’t think are possible, how to be a humble winner, how to be a humble loser, how to take lessons from losses and how to find improvements in wins. Most importantly it has taught me how to get the best out of myself and others around me because talent alone is never enough.” With regard to the future, these talented young athletes still have lofty goals. Cole aspires to the full MLS experience, saying

“A bucket list soccer goal I still have is to play in the MLS. It would be a dream come true if I could do that for my hometown team, but there is still a lot of work to be done!” Kyle mentions finishing his career in stateside as well, “My bucket list has a few things that I still need to tick in a soccer sense. I want to play in the champions league, in as many different countries as I can, and at the highest level I possibly can. I also dream of ending my career in the US so my friends and family can see me play and fully understand just what I’ve been doing with my life in Europe.” As for Caden, he hopes to follow in Kyle’s footsteps, playing professionally in Europe, and then moving into another facet of soccer-related life. “I would love to stay close to the game after I am done playing. Whether that is coaching, commentating, or doing something on the business side of soccer,” he said. The irony of his sons playing in Europe isn’t lost on Doug McLagan, who was born in Scotland and raised in England. After college, he came to the States on ‘holiday’ and ended up with a professional soccer offer and eventually a wife and family.

“I grew up playing rugby and cricket, but when I went to college I played soccer. Unlike here in America, we only trained once a week. So when I came to Kansas City and a friend encouraged me to try out for the Comets, I laughed, but I decided to give it a go. I played three years before deciding to hang up my cleats,” says Doug. Doug and Chris have both coached club soccer in the metro area for a number of years, and Doug served as the Blue Springs High School girls’ soccer coach for close to three decades before becoming the Notre Dame de Sion girls’ soccer coach several years ago. Between them, they have coached a multitude of ODP (Olympic Development Program), ECNL (Elite Clubs National League) and Division I soccer athletes.

Wherever the McLagan boys end up going, parents Chris and Doug will be there watching, and win or lose, they are most proud of the kind of young men they’ve raised. When asked about one of her favorite memories, Chris shared “Rockhurst won the State HS Championship game Kyle’s senior and Cole’s sophomore year. It was a pretty special season having them play together. Caden was the ball boy for many of the games. When they won the final game and the team was going crazy celebrating. I looked over to my right, and Kyle was walking around giving the boys on the other team a pat on the back or helping them up. It made me tear up. These are the things that make me most proud.

“We all have a certain love language and mine happens to be gift giving. For me, I show my love for family and friends by making them wooden items,” says artisan Jay Helland. From desks to rockers to segmented turnings, Jay handcrafts generational pieces of furniture and keepsake items that straddle the line between pieces of art and items of use. Jay is a giver by nature. As an educator in Lee’s Summit, Jay shared his passion for industrial arts with his students. As a wrestling and football coach, Jay led young athletes. As a grandfather, he is teaching his oldest grandson how to drive. Even in retirement, Jay continues to share his skills through workshops and guest appearances at area schools. Jay began woodworking as a young boy. “My very first opportunity to make a project was in a Boys Club in Wichita Falls, Texas. I made a sword and a bird house. The only instruction we received was how to turn on a band saw and keep our fingers away from the blade.” Over the years, his skills have sharpened, and he has managed to keep his fingers away from the blades. Sam Maloof is a name that pops up often in conversation with Jay. Maloof is considered by many to be the iconic master woodworker and furniture designer of contemporary America. Jay met the “Hemingway of hardwood” in 2004 at the insistence of a former student, Dr. Cartland Burns. Dr. Burns was living in Los Angeles at the time and convinced Jay to come visit Maloof’s studio and home in Alta Loma. During the tour, the duo met Sam. “After finding out that I had come all the way from Missouri, he invited us to join another small group for a personal tour of his shop, home and wood storage building. We were given unbelievable access to him. We listened for over three hours to his stories and hung onto every word spoken. The day was awesome and almost too good to be true,” Jay recounts. Jay came home from that trip inspired to embark on the lofty goal of making a Maloof-styled chair. To date, Jay has created seven Maloof inspired dining room chairs and fourteen rockers. “Maloof’s rockers are true sculptures of functional art that are as comfortable as they are beautiful,” Jay says. Because of the intense handwork and necessary symmetry, it is one of the most challenging pieces he makes, requiring approximately 140 hours of handiwork per rocker. Not surprisingly, Jay shares that the most satisfying part of the entire process for him is in the giving to someone who appreciates the piece. Jay was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2016. Upon the diagnosis, he made a list of all the woodworking projects he wanted to complete while still physically able. The list is 70 lines long, often with multiple items on a single line. He has about a dozen projects left to meet his goal.

On that list of completed items are two tool cabinets for Jay’s grandsons, Tyler, 16, and Max, 8. No ordinary tool cabinets and each unique in design, these pieces of furniture are filled with a maze of compartments, each opening up to another like a puzzle box. Inside each is a collection of tools, hand-drawn plans for the cabinets, and a journal Jay created with thoughts for each boy while he was making the cabinets. He has advised them to hang on to their tools until they are in their 50’s. Jay says, “I don’t believe in pushing them into something but I hope to be around to help them if they want to learn.” And so, Jay Helland continues to speak his love language loud and clear. He is steadfast in the creation of a legacy through the art of woodworking. His is the gift that will keep on giving for years to come.

FORTIFIED BY FAITH German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is quoted as saying “that which does not kill us makes us stronger.” For one local family, that quote has literally come to fruition in the past few years. Geoffrey Arbuckle and Blake Gordon have experienced a journey of acceptance, resiliency, and faith and agree that while they wouldn’t have chosen their circumstances, they are stronger as a result of them. In 1989, Geoffrey was a passenger in a car struck by a drunk driver. His C2, C3, C4, and C5 were broken, leaving him paralyzed below the neck and on life support. He was told he would never walk, breathe on his own, or eat by mouth. Geoffrey became determined to prove doctors wrong and become stronger in many ways than he was before the accident. A former collegiate athlete, Geoffrey put his physical strength to the test, but more importantly, he says his faith in God played the most important role in his recovery. “It was God who saved me that day, God who healed me and wakes me every day to live for Him. God, knowing what was best for me, left me with disabilities that would be needed many years later for a son who had not yet been born, but a son who would need all that I had been gifted with. Odd as it sounds, my disabilities are a gift that was, and is, needed.” Fast forward to 2012. Geoffrey Arbuckle married China Gordon, gaining her children Chandler, Blake and Madison as well (Geoffrey
also has son Will, from a previous marriage). He made it clear he had no intention of replacing their father but looked forward to giving them love, time and attention on their journey together. Blake was a bit apprehensive, as any 15-year-old would be when another man enters your mom’s life, but he soon realized Geoffrey was a man of integrity, character and inspiration. Little did he know how much he would come to need his stepfather’s example and encouragement. Last fall on September 15th, 26-year-old Blake and a friend stopped at a railroad crossing to watch a passing train as they headed home from dinner. Blake is fascinated by trains and wanted to stand closer to watch and feel the wind as it went by. The absence of light, along with unstable rocky terrain, led Blake to stumble. As he fell forward, the vacuum created by the train pulled him onto the tracks. As his right arm was run over, his body twisted and his right leg was also caught under the wheels. He then had the sensation of being pulled away as his body was thrown several feet. Miraculously, Blake was able to crawl away and call for his friend. He remained conscious and applied a tourniquet to his arm, crediting his time in the army with his ability to react as he did. Blake spent several days in a local hospital and was transferred to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, where they had to amputate his right foot and his right arm a few inches from his shoulder. twenty-somethings would likely despair the loss of life as they knew it, Blake has been remarkably able to reflect on what happened and how to move forward. Blake states “I believe God pulled me from underneath the train and saved my life. All along, I have felt and experienced a peace that only God can provide. I look forward to every day, knowing that He is with me and has plans for me.” Blake, the “son who had not yet been born,” has been able to draw upon Geoffrey’s strength and example to focus on recovery. Geoffrey shared the biggest change for him after his accident was how he viewed people and the world. “When Blake had his accident, I knew God would change his eyes as well. I knew Blake would interact in, and with, the world differently.” Geoffrey’s accident caused paralysis on his left side while Blake’s right limbs were affected. Laughingly, they say together they make a whole person! Both Geoffrey and China knew Blake was going to be okay when he started making jokes while still in the hospital and his sense of humor appeared unscathed. Blake says it’s “comforting to have someone who understands without necessarily saying anything. We share looks, laughs and at times, quiet silences, and in those is a bond that comes from what we uniquely share in our disabilities.” Blake and Geoffrey’s journey together continued to take unexpected turns. A GoFundMe account was set up by Blake’s sister and brother after the accident, and an acquaintance of Geoffrey’s made a generous donation. Although Geoffrey and Vaughn Baker were

high school classmates, they had not seen each other in many years. Geoffrey contacted Vaughn to thank him, which started a series of conversations between them. Vaughn asked Geoffrey about his career history and accomplishments, and shared that his company could use a Chief Operating Officer. Geoffrey now serves as COO of Strategos International. Vaughn started Strategos in 2002 as a faithbased security company that provides consulting, training, protection and investigations for churches, schools, government, and corporations. Having had experience in the military and with business development, Blake was brought on board. “Now, I get to work with Geoffrey every day, and more importantly, I get to work with men and women who are amazing Christ followers, who manage their business by faith and Biblical principles and love others equally. Strategos sees our abilities, not our disabilities.” It’s evident how much respect these two men have for each other and how they lift one another up daily. Blake continues to face challenges (like tying shoes and carrying in the groceries, he jokes), but he’s not slowing down. The VA Hospital has helped Blake with his ‘very cool’ prosthetics and he is adapting and learning how to do things he has always enjoyed like hunting and rock climbing. Our community is fortunate to have Geoffrey and Blake in its midst.
