Here’s a look at the ‘New Retirement’ Retirement today is far different – and potentially more rewarding – than it was a generation ago. When you retire, what areas of life will be most important to you? A recent report from Edward Jones and Age Wave, titled Four Pillars of the New Retirement, identified these four key “pillars” of a rewarding retirement: • Having good physical/mental health – You can always take steps to maintain your health, such as getting a regular exercise and eating properly. • Having close connections to family and friends – It’s important to keep up your relationships with family and friends, before and after you’re retired. • Having a sense of purpose in life – Those with a higher sense of purpose have a happier life, according to the Four Pillars report. By volunteering, you’ll not only help others but also yourself. • Being financially secure – If you haven’t yet retired, you can bolster your finances by contributing as much as possible to your investment accounts. Try to take a holistic approach to retirement. When you do, your days as a retiree can be greatly fulfilling. This content was provided by Edward Jones for use by your local, Lee’s Summit financial advisors. LIFESTYLE LETTER
Superhuman Lady Power
May 2022 PUBLISHER
Laura Paszkiewicz | laura@citylifestyle.com MANAGING EDITOR
Remarkable. Resilient. Resourceful. Relational. When I reflect on the ladies in my life, these are just a few of the adjectives that immediately come to mind. They are also adjectives that describe the women you’ll read about in this, our annual ‘ladies’ issue. It’s likely each of us can recall a lady or two from our formative years who helped shape our character and/or influenced the paths we have chosen to pursue. For me, several such mentors come to mind. One of the first was my mom, who taught me the importance of perseverance as I watched her finish her college degree and begin a teaching career as the mother of three teens and a toddler (yep, I was that midlife ‘surprise’ in my family!). Another significant influence was my high school newspaper advisor, Ms. Kathy Craghead. She believed in my writing but also in my capacity for leadership, and her confidence that I would make an effective newspaper editor played a key role in my choice of college major. Fun side note; one of the editorials I wrote which earned a few awards was a persuasive piece intended to encourage our high school administration to let the female students wear walking shorts. What an archaic rule that seems in today’s world! Those experiences with strong women growing up influenced my conscious and subconscious choices in who I surround myself with today. I have a wonderfully supportive and diverse circle of friends who help me navigate life and serve as my anchor for ‘true north’. Although radically different in many ways, the common threads of our friendships include respect, healthy accountability, and a willingness to accept and embrace our areas of growth. We are far from perfect, but it’s okay. In this hyper-polarized world that seems to focus primarily on differences, wouldn’t it be awesome if we could all seek to find our similarities instead of our differences and choose to embrace our obstacles as opportunities? Who knows what kinds of superhuman lady power we could harness by doing so!

BioBalance Health’s goal is to bring women and men back to vibrant health. Aging begins in the fourth decade and coincides with the loss of testosterone production. Testosterone deficiency results in loss of libido, fatigue, depression, weight gain, and the beginning of the diseases of aging, like diabetes and high cholesterol. BioBalance stops aging where it starts, by replacing testosterone with the most physiologic method of T replacement, bioidentical hormone pellets.

Understanding Your Child’s Growth and Development Milestones As a parent, your primary goal is to raise healthy, happy children. That’s why you take them to the pediatrician for regular checkups, provide them with proper nutrition, give them age-appropriate toys, and smother them with love and opportunities to grow their little minds. It’s also important to know how your child is progressing through growth and development milestones. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has just made that last step a lot easier with the release of several resources for parents, including an app that tells you where your child is in comparison with norms for their age group.
Why Understanding Growth and Development Milestones Matters
Crawling, walking, talking, eating solid food…these are all hallmarks of early childhood development. But many parents have questions about when these are supposed to happen. “Is my child normal?” they question. Perhaps you’ve had a similar question about your child. One study found that nearly a quarter of all parents have worried that their child had developmental delays, so if you have concerns, you’re certainly not alone. If there is an area where your child is not progressing and meeting those milestones, knowing earlier rather than later is key. And even if your child is perfectly on track, that knowledge can put your mind at ease. Having a tool to understand what the growth and development
milestones is incredibly helpful for parents. It can also alert you to any issues that warrant a trip to the pediatrician. That’s why the CDC’s free Milestone Tracker app is such a valuable resource. It helps you keep track of your child’s progress from two months to age five, the most important development years for young children.
Partnering CDC Resources with Pediatrician Visits The best way to use the resources provided by the CDC is twofold: 1. To ensure that your child is on track with growth and development milestones. 2. To use as a tool to communicate your child’s progress with your pediatrician. By using the app, you can keep track of what you and your child are experiencing during those important formative years. You know your child better than anyone, so remember these tools are merely guides. If anything concerns you,

Life can be draining - mentally, physically and spiritually. The frenetic pace of today’s tech-laden world takes its toll, but for those entering Salon & Spa De Crist, owner Janel Schick seeks to provide a respite for restoration and rejuvenation. “We live life fast, full of deadlines, projects, and activities; our calendars are packed with things we enjoy but can leave us feeling a bit poured out, so my desire is to have a place where we can spoil you and once you’ve left the spa you can show up as the best version of yourself,” she says. With 20 years in business and celebrating two years in the fully renovated downtown Lee’s Summit location, Schick hopes she’s created the perfect atmosphere for both individuals and groups. “From the moment you enter the spa you should feel soothed. Our spa colors and textures were carefully selected to create a cozy feeling, mixed with soft rugs, throws and an aesthetic that always has our clients commenting on the how great the ‘vibe’ is.” Educating clients on the importance of regular skin and selfcare is an integral part of Schick’s mission. “Massage benefits are powerful. Not only does massage therapy improve sore muscles and stress levels, it contributes to better sleep, better blood flow, and aids in removing toxins,” she says. “Our goal at SSDC is to help folks reset their stress.” Closed for regular business on Saturdays, private spa parties have become a big hit. “We love hosting birthday parties, retirement parties, and bachelorette parties. This allows girlfriends to get together in a private safe space and enjoy a spa day together! We’ve created a really special team of professionals who can deliver optimal results whether it is skincare, body waxing, or custom massage. Our amazing spa pros can handle anything you are looking for!” Guided by her faith, Janel Schick says she has worked to create a safe space for individuals to come and find rest and healing through professionals who are integrity filled, safe, and servant minded. “I feel the Lord has called me to use my tools and resources to create a safe space for healing, and I hope that no matter who you are, when you’re ready to take a ‘recess’ from the reality of life, you will choose us. You will feel refreshed, loved, and ready to take on the world after spending time in our spa!” For more information on self-care and the variety of services offered at Salon & Spa De Crist visit salondecrist.com MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . All In the
Family One couple’s journey through fostering and adoption
Kylie Ewing always knew she wanted a house full of kids. “My mom used to tell me that I was going to grow up to be the old woman who lived in a shoe,” Kylie says. Today, Kylie likes to create a feeling of home wherever she goes. As the founder of Pro Deo in Lee’s Summit, an advocate for countless teens and the mother of seven, she has certainly opened her home, and her heart, to many. Kylie and her husband, Andy, began their journey together through campus ministry at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph. Upon graduation, they moved to the Lee’s Summit area where Andy began a career in law enforcement. Andy saw a need in the community to help support at-risk teenagers, so he talked Kylie into giving up watching Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday nights for grilling hot dogs in the parking lot of

Lakeland Community Church. Around that same time, Kylie attended a conference on re-neighboring and became inspired to have a lasting impact on local teens. Pro Deo, a non-profit organization aimed at supporting teens, was born in 2010 with Kylie at the helm. As a newlywed couple in their 20s, Andy and Kylie hosted teen dinners every week for three years. Their home became an ad hoc youth center. Sometimes, the kids stayed for more than just dinner. Kylie can rattle off the names of at least eight girls who lived with them through the years, many in a crisis situation. Most of these women have stayed in contact with the Ewings as they navigate raising their own children. “Once you have been added to our family,” Kylie says, “you are in it for life.” When Pro Deo moved out of the Ewing home, a group of volunteers helped replace the “coffee shop type furniture” with normal house furniture and made home repairs. More than just a fresh coat of paint, Kylie says, “It painted a beautiful picture of how we had taken care of the community and they were now taking care of us. We were all in it together.” Pro Deo won Business of the Year from the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce in 2014. With Pro Deo’s success, Kylie was ready to transition away from the daily operations of a nonprofit and focus on raising a family. She and Andy had long determined there were many ways to build a family. In 2013 they brought home Kadence through a private adoption. A few years later, they were ready for more. “We went into foster care because we desperately wanted to expand our family, even if it was temporary. We felt like we still had so much love to give,” says Kylie. Through foster care and eventually adoption, their family has grown to include Lilly, Lydia, Leah, Dominic, Domariana and Titus. Starting with Kadence, they stair step in age from 9 to 4.

Kylie beams with pride when she talks about her children. They each have different personalities, different strengths, different obstacles. She hopes they “know that they are always worthy and that they bring something of value to the table, no matter how little or how big.” When the pandemic hit and schools went virtual, Kylie found herself at home with seven children. Fast forward two years later, and Kylie is not only home schooling her own children, but she is collaborating with three other families twice a week. The students range from three years old to eighth grade. A modern-day Ms. Frizzle, Kylie prides herself on taking the kids on adventures and makes learning come alive for them. Every week this year they are studying a different US state. “For our state study, I really want them to know that when you grow up, you can go anywhere. Be anything. I want them to know that God will use them. God has a plan for them. There are things you can be passionate about; even the littlest thing can branch out,” she says. Kylie is quick to point out that many days are hard, despite her preparation. Hers is a balancing act between structure and flexibility. “I always have a plan B, a plan C, a plan D so that if something doesn’t go as expected, I have ways we can fix it and move forward.” As the historian of her family, Kylie uses social media to share the good, the beautiful, and the messy. She hopes someday her kids will look back and see how their triumphs far outweigh any disappointments. Even though her children are her main focus these days, Kylie still has a heart for serving others. It is a gift she hopes to pass on to her kids. “We want them to have a passion for serving their community,” she says. From picking out a gift to send somewhere on the other side of the world at Christmas to packing sandwiches for a homeless outreach, Kylie strives to find age-appropriate ways her children can grow in the field of ministry. Kylie Ewing shines a light on the beauty and joy in creating a home--whether it be in a shoe, a house, a coffee shop or a church. Because home is where the heart is. “Love begins by taking care of the closest ones – the ones at home.” Mother Teresa

Artistic Excellence Takes Flight New KCI Airport to feature LSW Teacher’s Artwork ARTICLE BY JOHN BEAUDOIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Rachel Hubbard Kline’s mom still has all of her elementary school art projects. Such is life when you’re destined to become an art educator and your mom is also a teacher. “My mom saved all of my elementary school art projects,” Rachel said during a break in her teaching schedule. “I don’t know if I have the memory or I think I do because I still have the piece.” The piece is simple: a clay dinosaur. How it formed from her mind and through her hands is something Rachel carries with her to this day. “I still have it, that dinosaur,” she said. “It’s very memorable. I started with a ball of clay, pinched out

the legs and tail and formed the nose and head. I thought, ‘Wow, from this ball of clay, I can create anything.’ It was pretty amazing.” That creative inspiration now flows through Rachel to her students at Lee’s Summit West High School, where she is in her third year teaching everything from freshman art to advanced classes, college credit portfolio, drawing 1, 2, 3/Painting 1, 2, 3 and visual arts. Rachel’s educational edge and artistic acumen come by her honestly. She studied fashion design at the Parsons School of Design in New York City before realizing her true passion might not be in that career track. Rachel went on to the University of Connecticut to earn

her art history degree and then completed a Masters in Fine Arts in Studio Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Still, she wasn’t sure arts education would be destiny. Her mom was a consumer science teacher, though, and she says, “I was kind of in denial that I would be in teaching as well. I wanted to explore New York City, but it came full circle and all of those experiences helped me become a stronger educator.” Her wide range of classes and teaching preps keep her on her toes, for sure. “It’s a really great fit for me, it balances fine art and my passion for teaching and I still get to study art history and share that with students.” Rachel got news last fall that she will be able to share with students and the community for years to come: her art will be prominently featured on the walls of the new Kansas City International Airport terminal. Fittingly, she was notified on her mom’s birthday. “My mom was very, very excited. She said it was the best birthday present ever.” Rachel responded to a call-for-artists and presented her idea for a wall of ceramic tiles featuring laser-engraved news articles and photos of notable events around Kansas City. From 1928 to 1961, The Kansas City Star published quilt patterns in the newspaper and Rachel is using many of the quilt blocks as motifs, which will repeat to create an overall pattern. “From the multitude of quilt designs, I am selecting specific quilt patterns that were passed down in my family, are significant to Missouri history, such as the ‘Dogwood Blossom,’ and those that are the most visually interesting. Because the quilt blocks are all formatted in squares, the modular nature easily allows multiple designs to be juxtaposed next to one another.” Her artwork will feature such historical Kansas City moments like the Super Bowl and World Series wins, the Hyatt Skywalk collapse, the Union Station Massacre and other major headlines from Cowtown. For some of the tiles, Rachel is pairing related quilt block patterns with the news article. She will use quilt patterns called “Rope and

For the Kansas City Mayoral elections, she will go with a pattern called “Friendship Name Chain.” When the artwork is delivered this November for installation, it will measure 4 feet high and 20 feet wide and will be displayed prominently with other local KC artists’ work in the new terminal. Rachel made the first round of selections and was told by Zoom she was a finalist. “The meeting was on a Friday during school and I had an advanced painting class so I just played it for the class and it was pretty exciting,” she said, noting that day was also her husband’s birthday. Rachel also has a show at Longview Community College in September where she is showcasing her art, including her laser engraved newspaper articles, sketches and mock-ups. “I am excited to share the process because my project involves so much research,” she said. “Kansas City history is embedded in the work so that future generations can look at the work and learn about our town.”

Xpress Yourself BE YOUR OWN KIND OF BEAUTIFUL
ARTICLE BY ALICIA HOLECEK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Tucked under the new LUXOR sign of the historic Vogue building on Douglas Street, Dara Huber’s Xpressions Boutique has been a fixture in the downtown Lee’s Summit landscape for almost 14 years. During that time, Dara’s business has grown, but her dedication to helping women feel good about themselves has remained a constant. After getting a degree in computer science and realizing that was not her calling, Dara moved into the cosmetic business at the tender age of 21. What began as mall kiosk locations eventually grew into the brickand-mortar business. “My dream was to be a boutique owner,” she says. Xpressions Boutique is small but mighty. Customers are greeted with an eclectic mix of women’s clothing, fashion accessories of every kind and even a sprinkling of baby and children’s clothes. Paired with Dara’s personal service, there is something for everyone. Dara is passionate about being yourself. Her best advice is to start with a classic style, and then accessorize by adding a necklace, earrings, or a fun purse to spice up your outfits. “Right now, simple jewelry is really in. But you should buy and wear what best fits your personality and comfort level,” she explains. She is happy to provide personalized styling advice for her shoppers.
In addition to the wide selection of women’s items, Dara also carries an adorable collection of baby and children’s clothing. When Dara first opened Xpressions Boutique, she was eight months pregnant with her daughter, Zoe. What started out as just a few baby items has grown, just like Zoe has! Dara has dedicated an entire wall to baby, toddler and kids items up to size 10/12. She also offers Mommy and Me outfits, which are a big hit for local moms. While about half of Xpressions Boutique is dedicated to apparel and accessories, the foundation of Dara’s business is natural skin care products and ColorXminerals (CXM), her private label of cosmetics.

CXM products are organically designed for clean beauty. “I provide all natural, non-toxic, chemical free makeup. It doesn’t have any of the components that most makeups have which cause them to expire. This product will literally last decades,” she says. From lip color to eyeliner to nail polish, you can create your own palette with the multi-purpose pigments and blending agents. Long before YouTube and TikTok makeup tutorials, Dara loved to play with makeup as a teen. Over the years, she has learned to use makeup as an enhancement of natural beauty, and not a mask. At Xpressions Boutique, Dara has a ‘try it before you buy it’ philosophy.

She offers free color match makeovers for CXM foundation and blush on a walk-in basis. If you are looking for a complete makeover, she can help with that, too. “I love seeing the transformations with our makeovers—taking someone who maybe doesn’t wear a lot of makeup normally and helping them feel good about themselves when they look in the mirror.” Dara understands that her business depends on building relationships with her customers. As a self-created cosmetics company, having a dedicated client base has helped her business grow. “It makes me feel really special to have clients from around the country come into the store when they are in town. They are here visiting family, but they make a point to stop in and stock up,” she says. “Being in business this long, it's about personal relationships with people, having a superior product and getting to know the community.” Praising the community of Lee’s Summit, Dara adds, “Our customers are civic minded, caring, and eager to support local businesses. Downtown Mainstreet is also a big advocate for our area. They create events, maintain the beautiful ascetics and overall, keep the ball rolling. They are dialed in to help the small business owner succeed.” Dara is no stranger to the joy, and hard work, that accompany owning a small business. She grew up as a
first generation Asian American whose parents are still in the restaurant industry. With fond memories from those days, she says, “Here I am now self-employed and working weekends—just like my parents!” Dara has cultivated a friendly, welcoming environment at Xpressions Boutique that is sure to inspire a one-stop shopping experience. Whether you are looking for a gift for Mother’s Day, a new spring accessory or a fresh makeover, stop by and check out the wide variety of cosmetics and clothing Xpressions has to offer. DRINK LOCAL IN THE CITY
Amigoni Urban Winery brings a wide variety of wines to Kansas City in the historic Daily Drover Telegram Newspaper building located in the Stockyards District of the West Bottoms. Producing small lots of dry handcrafted wines, they focus on traditional European grape varietals, including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Viognier. Winemaker Michael Amigoni and owner Kerry Amigoni are the husband and wife founders. It all started when Michael fully committed to his homemaking wine hobby by planting 40 Cabernet Franc vines in the backyard of his home in Leawood. It took over 10 years to develop techniques to perfect growing grapes in the challenging Midwest conditions. “Michael was a home winemaker since the late ‘90s,” Kerry says. “We had started a vineyard east of town in Centerview, Missouri selling mostly fruit.

We realized there was more money in winemaking than selling fruit, so we incorporated in 2006 and began on a very small scale.” Amigoni Urban Winery sold its vineyard and now brings in fruit from northern California and Washington state to create their locally made wines. Varietals include Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Mourvedre and Malbec. “We offer wines not typical of the area and introduce people to wines they may not have heard of—we want wine to be approachable. Our wines are all French and Italian varietals we bring in from California. We ship in whole cluster fruit and crush, ferment and age here in our urban facility. Our bestselling wines include our Cabernet Franc, Urban Drover, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and our newer Sparkling Pinot Grigio.”

Jay Neff ran the newspaper and was also mayor of Kansas City from 1904-1905, and a journalism building is named after him at the University of Missouri. Designer John O’Brien restored the space to resemble the early 1900s using reclaimed doors and tile. Renovations were fully completed in May of 2012.
