Here’s a look at the ‘New Retirement’ Retirement today is far different – and potentially more rewarding – than it was a generation ago. When you retire, what areas of life will be most important to you? A recent report from Edward Jones and Age Wave, titled Four Pillars of the New Retirement, identified these four key “pillars” of a rewarding retirement: • Having good physical/mental health – You can always take steps to maintain your health, such as getting a regular exercise and eating properly. • Having close connections to family and friends – It’s important to keep up your relationships with family and friends, before and after you’re retired. • Having a sense of purpose in life – Those with a higher sense of purpose have a happier life, according to the Four Pillars report. By volunteering, you’ll not only help others but also yourself. • Being financially secure – If you haven’t yet retired, you can bolster your finances by contributing as much as possible to your investment accounts. Try to take a holistic approach to retirement. When you do, your days as a retiree can be greatly fulfilling.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Editor

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Laura Paszkiewicz | laura@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

I’m a small-town girl at heart, so our emphasis on ‘love local’ this month resonates deeply for me. I grew up enjoying Saturday morning root beer floats at our Rexall Drugstore and didn’t mind that pretty much everyone knew our family; my parents were both teachers and I was the youngest of four. When we first moved to Lee’s Summit and our girls were small, I loved spending time downtown. We’d start at Whistlestop or Neighbors for coffee and treats and then head to KD Books for a marathon session of toy admiration and book selection. Lee’s Summit was exponentially larger than my little hometown even then, but I felt that same connection and relationship with the small businesses and their owners. Fast forward; my kids are grown and Lee’s Summit is thriving as a 100,000+ metropolitan suburb with dozens of new businesses slated to open this year alone, but it still retains the flavor and feel of a much smaller community. The creativity, character and commitment of the artists and small business owners featured in this issue make it easy to see why. They pursue their passion because they love their craft, and they need us as consumers to value the opportunities that can’t be experienced online; in other words, to love local. I hope our stories this month inspire you as much as they did me; they cover people and artists who are diverse in their respective pursuits but who share a common willingness to put themselves out there, and their contributions help weave the fabric that makes our city unique. If you haven’t taken time lately to slow down and explore the options that abound for shopping, dining, experiencing art and just enjoying life in Lee’s Summit, I hope you will soon.

Pediatric Heart Health: Types of Pediatric Heart Health Issues With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s natural that we think about hearts, flowers, and chocolates. But what about heart health, and in particular pediatric heart health? That might not be something that enters your thoughts often, but it is something you should be aware of. Most children are born with healthy hearts. As defined by the American Heart Association (AHA), this means they have four favorable health behaviors (related to smoking, BMI, physical activity, and healthy diet status) and three favorable health factors (total cholesterol, blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose levels). Certainly, as children age, these issues could become challenges, but for infants, if they have heart issues, they are usually inherited and most resolve themselves naturally. In Missouri, all newborns must be screened for congenital heart defects Types of Pediatric Heart Health Issues Serious congenital heart defects are typically diagnosed in utero, shortly after birth, or in the first few months of life. Less serious issues may present themselves later in childhood. Either way, you should let your pediatrician know if you see any differences in your child, including: • Changes in their skin color: blue, pale, or gray.

• Rapid breathing, shortness of breath, trouble breathing, or tiredness after feedings or activity. • Swelling in extremities or around the eyes. • Fainting. During the early months of your child’s life, they’ll visit the doctor regularly, which allows your pediatrician to spot any issues. However, if you have any concerns about your child’s health, contact your pediatrician right away. Thankfully, there are several treatments doctors can use to help children with severe pediatric heart health issues live full lives. Concerns about Your Child’s Heart? While the month of love leads us to focus on pediatric heart health, we always want our children to thrive. It’s imperative that your infants and children see their pediatrician regularly during those first few months and years of life. In most cases, children are healthy and happy, but if any concerns arise, it’s best to address them early. We love seeing your family at Community Choice Pediatrics! If you’re looking for a new pediatrician, contact us to make an appointment. READ MORE ABOUT THIS ON OUR BLOG

KIDS AT PLAY LEARNING THROUGH FUN AND GAMES AT THE GODDARD SCHOOL

16

O UR TOWN | ED U CATION

The pandemic reinforced an important lesson for parents and educators - social aspects of school are often as important as academics to a child’s development. This approach is a core value at The Goddard School-Lakewood. “Our team believes some of the best learning opportunities happen during everyday moments, which is why we have a flexible, play-based, hands-on curriculum,” owner Abby Hendren said. Hendren and her husband, Shane, opened the school in 2020 after exploring preschools for their two young sons and seeing a need for additional educational options. “As a parent, you have to know your littles ones are loved and respected and in the safest hands when you leave them,” she said. “That’s what we practice every day at our school.”

Owner Abby Hendren

Academic excellence, individualization and student safety are also areas of focus. “As a franchise, we have access to and incorporate every day the leading educational methods and safety precautions, and we are a local, Lee’s Summit family owned business,” Hendren said. “I’m here every day, and I personally get to know and love all of the students in our school. We’ve implemented methods to keep our building as clean as possible,” she said. “We still have teachers wearing masks in the classrooms, but face coverings have never been required for our students.” Education is a team effort among teachers, students and families at the school. “We set expectations with parents from the beginning that we are partners in their children’s learning experience,” Hendren said. “They can confer with their child’s teacher at any time. We also send electronic daily reports so parents can see every night what we are working on in the classroom and can supplement those lessons at home.” Hendren and staff also partner with families whose children need additional educational resources. For example, one student attended Goddard part time while also receiving specialized care at another facility. “After the first six months attending our school, thanks to our qualified teachers and our loving environment that encourages and values the way each child learns, that student tested out of the specialized care program and was able to start attending our school full time,” Hendren said. “It was truly remarkable. There were happy and proud tears with both our staff and the family on that one!” When asked what they want the community to know, Hendren replied “At The Goddard SchoolLakewood, we offer a nurturing, welcoming educational experience where children are treated with respect. Our goal is to instill a love for learning from the youngest age possible by making school a fun, safe and positive environment.” Parents are invited to tour and see if The Goddard School-Lakewood is the right fit for their child. HOW SWEET IT IS…

BELLE TOFFEE - A LABOR OF LOVE

ARTICLE BY LAURA MAXWELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

20

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

Many of us have family recipes and traditions we hope to pass along to our children and beyond, and we strive to make memories as we share the experiences together. For one local family, however, their award-winning legacy is becoming one the entire community can enjoy. Larry Marak grew up savoring his aunt Ida Belle's toffee, crafted from a recipe that originated sometime before World War II, and today he and his family have turned it into a labor of love. As a young married man in the 1960s with small children and a limited holiday budget, Larry and his wife thought making the toffee to share as gifts might be a thoughtful way to spread Christmas cheer. Persuading aunt Ida Belle to share her recipe took a bit of encouragement, however, and when she did finally share the shorthand description on a weathered three-by-five index card, Larry and his wife Joyce had some experimenting to do. “We had three young children at the time. Aunt Ida Belle's recipe called for cooking until you heard the almonds 'pop'. We had to wait until the kids were in bed for it to be quiet enough to listen for the popping. Finding the right temperature was also a bit of a challenge, as well as the hour-plus of hand stirring for each batch.” Those first production cycles weren't quite as delectable as aunt Ida Belle’s but after several years of trial and error, coupled with several self-described messes, the Maraks finally created an iteration they felt tasted as delicious as aunt Ida Belle’s. They shared the tasty toffee with friends and family during the holidays, but that was the extent of it, until decades later when Larry and Joyce's son Jon encouraged them to make a batch to sell at a Christmas tree stand. The 40 tins sold quickly, and Belle Toffee was officially born, although with Larry still working fulltime the business remained mostly a holiday hobby until 2009 when they decided to create a commercial-grade kitchen in their basement and scale up the production. 21

It was important that the business remain a family affair, however, so business marketing and growth in the past decade have been strategic and intentional. “Our production cycles center around the availability of our family. We are still making toffee in our basement with our children and grandchildren helping, but our processes have become more sophisticated through the years. When we began, we used to use tweezers to coat the toffee with chocolate. Recently, we have acquired machinery that will allow us to dramatically increase production. We are looking forward to eventually expanding to a standalone building dedicated to toffee production,” said Larry Marak. With Belle Toffee winning numerous awards in the past three years and multiple local stores

in the Kansas City and St. Louis metro areas stocking it, having that increased production capacity will be crucial. At the 2021 International Chocolate Salon Awards, Belle Toffee received several awards, including a Silver for its Bourbon Pecan Toffee in Gold Chocolate and a Bronze for its Dark Chocolate Almond Toffee. The Bourbon Pecan toffee also received a Bronze award in 2020 in the Specialty Foods Association competition. It is made with Missouri pecans and Missouri bourbon, and Larry says it's difficult to describe; "you just have to taste it." Lee's Summit residents can find Belle Toffee in a variety of local shops, including All A Bloom, A Thyme for Everything, and Cockrell Mercantile, as well as shopping online at https://www.belletoffee.com. Forging ahead with vision

It’s hard to imagine anyone embodying the ‘Love Local’ theme of downtown Lee’s Summit more than the guys at Fossil Forge. There aren’t many weeks that go by that you can’t spot a member of the Fossil Forge team, including owners Dave Eames and Ben Wine, hoisted up on a truck and installing yet another cool, creative sign downtown. From public art exhibits to neon signage to metal work of all kinds for both businesses and private commissions, Fossil Forge is leading the Love Local campaign. Eames, past-president of Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, and Wine, a co-owner of Neighborhood Cafe and longtime downtown supporter, are constantly seeking ways to enhance downtown and all of Lee’s Summit through their visionary, innovative signage and artwork. And those pursuits go all the way back to 2002. Like so many soon-to-be-career-shifting members of the newspaper business, Eames was already plotting his next move while serving as a member of the Kansas City Star’s graphic design team. When he and wife Kelly moved to downtown Lee’s Summit in 2002, Dave transformed his ‘crazy good’ detached garage into a workshop, and the early visions of Fossil Forge were born. “I learned how to work in metal, learned how to weld, when the economy got rough in 2008 and layoffs at The Star started,” Dave recalled, adding that his own health issues and the death of his parents led him to make the break from the newspaper before his layoff number was called. From graphic design and illustration to building Little Free Libraries in his garage, the growth and progression of Fossil Forge began to take shape, culminating in the purchase of the building at 317 SE Main in 2015 and hiring Ben - an expert in signage, metal work and neon in his own right - in 2017. “I was fantasizing about owning a building because I wanted to be a bigger part of what was happening downtown. Bob Bushyhead and I were in a design meeting in 2014 and it was complete serendipity: we left that meeting, walked down the street, up the alley and looked at this space. It could not have been better,” said Eames. He joined Bob (Land3 Studio) and Christine Bushyhead (Bushyhead, LLC) in purchasing the spot, which the three companies transformed into offices and a workshop. “That was really the turning point. We were all of a sudden part of the downtown neighborhood.” The first sign out of the new shop was hung at Blue Heron Design, and their popularity with local store owners snowballed from there. Looking around downtown, you can find Fossil Forge’s handiwork at many downtown spots, including: Smoke Brewing Company, the Ice House Auction, Main Slice, Fringe, Stuey McBrew’s, Sabor Latino, The Pink Elephant, the Lee’s Summit Historical Museum, INSPO by KHL Design Studio, Ivy & Sparrow, the Cigar Shop, Country Club Bank, Arcade Alley, Third Street Social and the new Reece Nichols building. “We’ve been fortunate to be able to do a lot of signs down here, and there are a lot more on the way,” Ben said. Their biggest project that first year, however, was the creation of ‘Emergence,’ the massive City Hall public art piece made in conjunction with the city’s sesquicentennial in 2015. “That was vital for the shop in the early days,” Dave said. “We basically had occupancy in September and we had to build that sculpture in a month.” Public art exhibits became a fixture for Fossil Forge, with the collective creativity of the group commissioned to build high profile pieces like ‘Infinite Harvest’ at Summit Orchards, the iconic ‘816’ in downtown Lee’s Summit and ‘Prism’ at Pleasant Lea the Middle School.

On top of that, the shop has produced 44 Little Free Library installments nationwide, with 18 right here in Lee’s Summit. The Love Local flare of the shop eventually spilled over into retail, as Ben and Dave opened Local Foundery on Market Street in 2019, moving to a more prominent spot at 15 SW 3rd Street in the fall of 2021. “We got our training wheels on in that first location,” Ben said. “We closed and moved in within four days.” The whole notion of the Local Foundery is to create a store that serves as a connection between the older antique shops and a newer shop that offers vintage, handmade and other maker items around Kansas City. Facilitator of Fun EACH LONNIE MCFADDEN PERFORMANCE HAS A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING — DANCE, SINGING, TRUMPET — AND IS ROOTED IN FUN

Entertainer Lonnie McFadden doesn’t believe he’d be performing today without the influence of his father, dancer and musician Jimmy McFadden. He recalls his father and his friends telling stories while he was growing up about their experiences performing. Lonnie was hooked, even though the stories detailed struggle more often than glamour. “I don’t know if my father was just such a great storyteller or my imagination was just so vivid, but I immediately wanted to do that,” he says. “When they would start talking about, you know, getting stranded in Detroit or Chicago living off peanuts and Pepsi Cola until the next week’s gig, that sounded like, ‘Oh my god, I want to do that.’ [laughs]” Lonnie, and later his brother Ronald, began piano lessons when they were 5 years old. Their father also found opportunities to teach them beyond formal lessons. “Even at church he would be teaching us about the way music is constructed,” he says. “We would be listening to the

choir, and he’d say, ‘Now tell me where the break is.’” His father bought them tap shoes to practice with, and practicing was something that Lonnie hated. “That’s something that, you know, it’s just like your parents making you eat spinach instead of eating candy all day,” he says. “It has been one of the most nourishing things for me in my life because now that I’m an adult and I am self-employed and have been since I was 16... Had I not learned that discipline from my father and mother, making me practice every day, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do now.” He now spends a minimum of 3 hours a day, 7 days a week at his rehearsal studio completing trumpet warmup exercises, answering emails and practicing basic tap dance techniques. McFadden also studies other tap dancers and musicians. Because the internet is vast, he finds it important to see what else is out there. While he enjoys trying new styles, he does not experiment with them with an intention of mastering them. CONTINUED >

“I’ve learned to accept what my gifts are,” he says. “I try to play trumpet as good as I can. I try to tap dance as good as I can. But as I said, I don’t think my gift is to become the greatest at anything. My gift is to bring joy.” About 15 years ago, before committing to play music full-time, he held a more traditional job selling cars. Here, he discovered his motivation to continue working in music. “I tried that for a while, and I was miserable,” he says. “So, one day I just went in there, and I quit cold turkey. I went back to trying to play music, not knowing if I would be able to pay my rent, but I knew I’d be happy. And I think that’s my biggest motivation every day.” He describes his performances as “musically all over the place,” with music from artists like Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Ultimately, he wants the audience to enjoy themselves. “From the first song, I try to feel the crowd out to see who I’m dealing with. Is this mostly business people? I try to find the common denominator,” he says. “The one thing that is my goal is for us to have a good time. Whether I’m at a business function or at the Kauffman Center or at the Phoenix it doesn’t matter—from the time I hit the stage or the band stand, my goal is to help facilitate a fun evening.”

creative planning for your future ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial d isciplines, i ncluding c omprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm i n America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal

and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an all time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every nineteen days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when

“It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.”

the market hits an all time high. It’s normal, and inflation has a lot to do with it.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept

this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.

ART PLAYS A

DOWNTOWN SCULPTURE WALK FUN FOR ALL

PA R T

ARTICLE BY JOHN BEAUDOIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

44

M UST SE E | A RTS + CU LTURE

Downtown Lee’s Summit’s food, drink, retail and entertainment scene has absolutely burst to life over the past decade. Along with new restaurants, pubs and shops has come a visually stimulating component: public art. Feeding on the resurgence of downtown, the City of Lee’s Summit, Lee’s Summit Arts Council and Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street teamed up in 2020 to launch the Downtown Sculpture Walk. That first installation - launched as the COVID-19 pandemic was shutting down performances, concerts and exhibits in the late spring of 2020 - included a raptor in front of the Lee’s Summit Fire Department headquarters on Douglas Street, a feather near the Lee’s Summit Historical Museum and what became a popular photo stop, the tri-colored popsicle at City Hall Plaza. The City of Lee’s Summit’s first-ever Cultural Arts Manager, Glenda Masters, said work began on the concept and execution of the sculpture walk a full year before it launched, with members of the arts council, downtown and Public Works staff identifying areas and corners of downtown that would lend to high traffic, visibility and display of the rotating public art pieces. “The primary reasons the city created the cultural arts division were to bring more opportunities and experiences to the community, so we wanted to explore how we could accomplish that,” Masters said. “From my experience working with other municipalities, a rotating public art program is a great way to integrate art into the community. And to encourage people to take notice of public art and the walkability of downtown as well.” Like any good downtown initiative, the arts leaders looked at other communities that had led the way in public art for best practices, timelines and work plans. Each year, the organizations hold a call-for-artists and, once selected, the artist is granted a stipend and has their piece displayed on the Sculpture Walk. Local and national artists from Remy Norton-Hood, an artist and metal worker at Fossil Forge Design to Craig Gray of Key West, Florida (Popsicles) to Des Moines-area and Belgiumborn artist Hilde DeBruyne (Metamorphosis) have been featured on the Sculpture Walk. The current 2021 selections include: “Metamorphosis” (artist Hilde DeBruyne, 4th & SE Main), “Borbor 9” (artist Will Vannerson, City Hall Plaza), “Silica Rose” (artist Jay Lockett, 3rd & Green), “Campana” (artist Joe Alred, in front of Third Street Social), “To Bee or Not to Bee” (artist Alex Mendez, Lee’s Summit Historical Museum, “Fire Dancer” (artist Jodie Bliss, Lee’s Summit Fire Station #2), “Patches” (artist Vince Houston, 4th & SE Main), “Wired” (artist Jack Bordnick, 3rd & SW Main), “Here Comes the Sunset” (artist Ben Piece, 3rd & SW Market) and “Heart of Downtown” (artist Remy Norton-Hood, 3rd & Douglas). The Sculpture Walk has added another layer to a central business district that has seen exponentially increased traffic and attention in recent years. "The Downtown Sculpture Walk builds upon downtown as a destination for our residents and visitors that evolves and changes,” DLSMS Executive Director Donnie Rodgers said. “It gives them another activity to enjoy when they visit downtown and helps to build a stronger sense of pride and connection to the heart of our community.” Masters said the reception has been overwhelmingly optimistic. “We’ve received a lot of really positive feedback and a lot of comments from folks saying they appreciate the city and downtown putting public art into the community,” Masters said, adding that some notable artists have been juried and selected for the Sculpture Walk. DeBruyne comes from a family of accomplished artists, including her father, also a sculptor. “Metamorphosis” comes from a series of abstract pieces that represent the life-cycle of

46

the monarch butterfly. And Kansas City-area artist Jay Lockett is the first African-American artist (“Silica Rose”) featured on the Sculpture Walk. The sculptures will change again in 2022, as the current callfor-artists has been made and the jury will select the new batch of public art pieces. Visitors to downtown Lee’s Summit can access the Downtown Sculpture Walk on the Otocast mobile audio guide, an app downloadable from any smartphone or device. The GPS-based service allows walkers to start the Sculpture Walk at any of the installations and listen to their stories, including recordings from the artists themselves. “We expect it to grow over time and we definitely would love the opportunity to bring more temporary and permanent public art to downtown and Lee’s Summit,” Masters said. “We’re just getting started.” For more information on the downtown Lee’s Summit Sculpture Walk, visit cityofls.net/cultural-arts/public-art.
