Smiling is my favorite, and I truly do believe it’s a wonderful life! If you have no idea what that sentence is all about, we really need to talk. At least once each holiday season, I give myself permission to sit down and watch - in their entirety, without disruptions - the movies Elf and It’s a Wonderful Life. I have lots of favorite holiday movies (Hallmark Channel, anyone?!), but the season just isn’t complete without watching these classics. The common thread connecting the two storylines is the theme of slowing down long enough to appreciate the little things (and people) in life. I can’t tell you how much I love decorating my house, planning a bajillion holiday activities, and searching for the just-right presents for my family, but if I’m honest, there are more times than I care to admit each season when I end up stressed and snappy. My family can vouch for this, and yes, I do realize the irony. Sigh. I’m working on it. Since you’re reading this letter, I’m hoping it means you’ve found a way to steal away for a few moments of respite during the hustle and bustle of the season, and my wish for you is that there are restorative moments in the midst of the crazy. Just a hint, though. They probably won’t create themselves, so be bold in carving out that time for yourself. It doesn’t have to be hours; often I’ve found the proverbial catnap to be huge. A cup of coffee or tea. A text to a friend you’ve not connected with recently (anyone else live in the land of good intentions?!). Just do it. In the words of Buddy the Elf, I hope you’ll find a way to treat every day like Christmas and remember, there’s room enough for everyone on the Nice List.

Teen Coping Skills to Help Your Child Thrive The teenage years can be a challenge. So much is changing in a young person’s life during this time! From determining who they are and who they want to be to navigating the changes in their bodies and hormones, it’s a lot to tackle. And as a loving parent, you want to help your teen succeed! That’s why even the most involved parents can benefit from some teen coping skills to help your child thrive during this up-and-down time. Here are some of our favorite coping skills to use with your teenager, no matter the situation. KEEP THE LINES OF COMMUNICATION OPEN There’s a reason that talk therapy is so popular: it works. Talking it out can be a huge benefit for a teenager who can often feel as if they’re carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. The way to be successful when communicating with your teens is to provide a judgment-free zone where they feel comfortable sharing their feelings without fear of repercussions. Even if their concerns seem trivial to you, they can feel like the end of the world to them, so be open and empathetic. Encourage your teenager to share and avoid jumping in with solutions; sometimes, just getting it off their chest is enough to help them feel better.
MAINTAIN HEALTHY HABITS As much as teenagers might be able to live on pizza, Twinkies, and candy or stay up until all hours of the night, healthy habits make for much better teen coping skills. Support your child’s better-for-them choices, such as a smart diet full of good foods and developing a consistent sleep schedule. Incorporating regular physical exercise will create that much-touted triumvirate that builds a solid foundation as they grow. BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL One of the best ways to help your child develop great teen coping skills is to model them yourself. Don’t just tell them how to handle stress and cope with the ups and downs of life; show them by doing it all yourself. Even if teens act as if they’re not listening, they are. As a parent, and one of the most important people in their lives, you can do a lot to help them by: •
Openly communicating your feelings. Talk about your day and your relationships, the good and bad.
•
Being a facilitator when the routine gets stagnant. Suggest a road trip, change of scenery, or just a stop at the local ice cream shop.
•
Having fun and letting your children know you’re enjoying doing your thing, even if it’s not with them. They’ll see you prioritizing your self-care, which will prompt them to do the same.
•
Practicing healthy eating, a good sleep schedule, and incorporating regular exercise. Invite your teenager to join you by planning a meal or two or going on a bike ride with you.
BREAK THE ROUTINE Some teen coping skills may feel like avoiding the issue but breaking the routine could also be the best reset for a young person. If they’re struggling with a homework assignment, maybe a brief outing is the solution. A teenager can get deep into the woods with an issue, taking it on as an all-consuming challenge that can’t be easily overcome. And that can cause them to close up emotionally. Instead of pushing them through the situation and creating more frustration, stop and do something else for a bit. Even a quick walk with the dog, helping with something else around the house, or playing a game is all that’s needed to get refocused and see the issue in a whole-new light. DO SOMETHING FUN Adults often cope with stress by doing something they enjoy, such as exercise, spending time with friends, reading a book, or watching a movie. The same approach to managing stress can work for a teenager. What does your child like to do? Doing something fun is one of the teen coping skills that can stick with them as they grow and mature, providing them with a positive alternative to stress.
The more you can live a life that is real, including celebrating highs and discussing the lows, the better you’ll be able to model teen coping skills for your children. And that will set them up for a lifetime of success. TEEN COPING SKILLS AND HEALTHY LIVING Community Choice is here to help your teenagers stay happy and healthy as they navigate the transition from childhood to adulthood. At our practice, we welcome all children, and we meet our patients where they are. If you need a supportive pediatrician, contact us to schedule an appointment.

These beautiful holiday cookies were created by Cynthia Raven of SugarChat Cookie Studio. Cynthia teaches cookie decorating classes locally and around the country. Cynthia started out years ago baking and decorating birthday cakes for her daughters, which eventually evolved into decorating cookies. She is a lifelong baker and studied art before changing her degree to HR Management. She is currently VP of HR for a local technology company by day – and a “cookier” by night. “Especially during the holiday season when decorating cookies, it is so much fun to go a little over the top, try out alternate festive colors such as different shades of pink, turquoise and green, invoke some whimsy, add fun embellishments, and of course add some sparkle and glitz! “It’s also important to remember to enjoy the process. Find some flavor combinations that you like, research recipes, and experiment. Invite friends and or family for a cookie day, or spend a Saturday with your kids or grandkids. Make it a girls’ night with your besties! But most importantly, have some fun, enjoy the season, and be kind to yourself – don’t be frustrated if they don’t look exactly the way you imagined – there is tremendous joy in simply creating from the heart!” For more information about SugarChat Cookie Studio, visit sugarchatcookiestudio.com/

Kyle’s Gift CREATING A LEGACY, ONE MARTINI AT A TIME. ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPERT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
As parents, many of us think about the way we live our lives and the legacy we hope to leave for our children, but we can’t fathom carrying on our children’s legacy in their stead. That’s exactly what one local mother is doing. The life Kyle Zammar lived touched many, and his giving nature continues through Kyle’s Gift, a 501c3 foundation. This is non-profit organization comprised of volunteers is dedicated to providing financial resources to programs serving the social, emotional, physical and/or educational needs of special needs children and adults in western Missouri. Kyle’s Gift grants are awarded to non-profit organizations. Kyle, a 2002 graduate of Lee’s Summit High School, lost his life at the early age of 22, as a senior at Mizzou studying to become a special education teacher. After high school he was hired as a teacher’s aide in LS summer school. To his surprise, he was assigned to an elementary special education classroom. By day five, he was madly in love and found his passion. “My son Kyle was always someone special. He grew up in Lee’s Summit and was always an excellent athlete and leader. He was someone everyone loved and looked up to for his positive, friendly, generous spirit,” Susie Zammar, his mother, says. “Kyle was in, what we thought, impeccable physical condition. He was still playing basketball on a high level and coaching
a premiere team of 15-year-old boys, but May 29, 2006, his little brother, Austin’s, 14th birthday, Kyle didn’t wake up.” Since he was such an athlete, they were told he had a ‘perfect body’ and they found nothing to explain his death. Believing it was heart related, his heart was sent to Mayo Clinic. They discovered he died from myocarditis, a common cause of cardiac death in athletic young men. It is a disease that causes inflammation of the heart muscle due to a virus in the system. There was no way to know the virus existed. The Christmas after Kyle died, Austin and Susie tried to decide how to keep his memory alive. A friend shared the story of the White Envelope (whiteenvelopeproject.org), and it inspired them. That year they added a green envelope to the tree. Kyle was a huge Celtics fan, the reason for the shamrocks on his gifts. “We gave every Special Olympian a basketball that year,” Susie smiles. “The kids loved Mr. Kyle!” They started a small event called Mantels and Martinis in New Longview in 2012, with funds going to Special Olympics in Kyle’s honor. Since then, they have raised nearly $300,000 benefiting Special Olympics in Lee’s Summit and Jackson County, Camp Encourage, which is a sleepaway camp for autistic children; Developing Potential, Down Syndrome Innovations and SOAR Special Needs. Mantels and Martinis has become an annual event the first Thursday of December. Tickets go on sale October 2nd, Kyle’s birthday, and sell out in minutes, as they did this year. There are eight homes in Winterset Valley on the 2022 tour, each decked out in gorgeous holiday finery on mantels and indoor/outdoor décor created by talented area designers. Special Olympians serve as home hosts and greeting guests. “It seems the best way to celebrate Kyle. We can rejoice in all the love and goodness his life continues to bring into the world; it’s another gift,” Susie muses. “Honestly, for me as his mom, it helps keep him alive. There is old wisdom that no one really dies until your name is no longer spoken. Through Kyle’s Gift, the two scholarships in his name, his permanent memorial on the edge of Legacy Circle at Mizzou, a best friend’s little boy named Kyle and all the people who still share their love for him, his name and spirit remain very much alive.” Kelly Lee, Executive Director of Camp Encourage, notes, “Since 2017, Kyle’s Gift has been graciously supporting Camp Encourage and we couldn’t be more grateful. Because of their generosity, numerous local youths on the autism spectrum have been gifted the opportunity to attend an overnight camp— individuals that wouldn’t otherwise have been able to experience the ‘magic.’ Because of Kyle’s Gift, each camper has felt welcomed, gained independence and confidence, spent time exploring nature, made lifelong connections, met others that ‘get it,’ gained strategies to strengthen emotional and physical wellness, learned new skills of recreation, and gained skills for life.” Visit Kyle’s Gift on Facebook.

Light up your Holidays
Ferguson Lighting creates warm and happy homescapes ARTICLE BY JOH N BE AUDOIN PHOTOG R APHY BY JANIE JONE S

H OM E U P DAT E | LOCAL S E RVI CE S
It may take a pass or two by the Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery to realize the average Joe homeowner and Do-It-Yourselfer can just walk right into the showroom and start to dream about your new kitchen, bath or lighting scheme. “Some think it’s a private (showroom) that only builders can buy from and you need a membership,” said Ferguson Showroom Manager Laura Fornelli. “But anyone is welcome here for any project, any time.” Located in the former Factory Direct Appliance location, 3401 NE Ralph Powell Road, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting has eight years under its belt in Lee’s Summit and is open to builders and remodelers alike. Customers can browse the showroom for everything from updating a faucet and plumbing, tubs, toilets to vanities, chandelier to vanity lighting, outdoor lighting, hardware for vanities, kitchen cabinets, garbage disposals and all appliances, including dishwashers, ranges, microwaves and refrigerators. “We can go from conservative to high end and customize the range picking everything down to the color of the doors and knobs,” Fornelli said. Projects that start at Ferguson sometimes start from the very beginning, too. “We have people that come in and say, ‘I’ve gutted my kitchen and now I need help,’” Fornelli said. “We love a good challenge, we like to wrap our arms around our customers to make their dreams come true, whether it’s a remodel, update or something new.” Now trending, Fornelli says: stand-alone tubs and bidets installed in toilets - possibly in response to the toilet paper shortage during the height of the COVID pandemic. Customers are also looking for a ‘throwback’ look to the 1950s and 60s, she said. Mixed metals like black and gold are also popular. “Don’t be afraid to have a black and gold or nickel, silver, I even have customers that want chrome and black,” she said. Edison bulbs - those old-school ones where you can see the filaments inside - are certainly trendy right now, as are remodels that bring outdoor cooking projects into homes. “We offer full outdoor kitchens from sinks to grilling needs, even pizza ovens and smokers,” Fornelli said. The burst of single-family homes in Lee’s Summit over the years has been a boon for Ferguson, and those contractors trust Ferguson on the job, Fornelli said. “There are a lot of builders in the community and many of them are our customers,” said Fornelli, who has been at the Lee’s Summit location since 2021 and with Ferguson for three years. As with other industries, there have been supply-chain delays in some appliances, so plan ahead. “Selections made may may not be in the day your contractor needs it, so ordering as far in advance as possible is helpful” Fornelli noted. Ferguson employs more than a dozen in Lee’s Summit, with four salespeople on site at the Ralph Powell location. Two employees have been with Ferguson more than eight years and another has 25 years of experience in the industry. Of all their services, Fornelli said the customer aspect is still the most crucial. “I would brag about our world class customer service,” she said. “When you buy a faucet from the box store, the innards are plastic, but from us, they’re metal and they’re built to last. When you get something from Ferguson, there’s a reason it costs what it does - because it’s going to last. “We’ve had people come in and say ‘I bought my kitchen from you years ago,’ and they’re back as repeat customers. We love to hear that.” Ferguson’s showroom is open 9-5 Monday-Friday, Saturdays 10-5. All products and services can be found online at build.com.

MUSICIANS MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY. ARTICLE BY JULIE THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY WEST ELM PHOTOGRAPHY
Whether serenading students into the school building, teaching in his music classroom, using his DJ skills at school functions, or playing with coworkers for Lee’s Summit school district events, Matt Ketteman infuses joy and fun into each and every setting. It came as no surprise that he was selected as LSR7’s Teacher of the Year in 2020 and became a finalist for the Missouri Teacher of the Year. What is a bit surprising is how he manages to juggle all the responsibilities of teaching and at the same time coordinate multiple musical performances with his band, The Local. When Matt’s friend and coworker, Steve Lanier, asked Matt if he knew of any bands that played for free, his answer was unfortunately no. Steve had a daughter who was raising money for a mission trip and wanted to have a fun event to help with costs involved in the journey. They really wanted to have live music, but the expense would eat up too much of the proceeds. Matt and his wife Kim, the attendance secretary at Longview Farm Elementary, started thinking about how they could help with the project. Knowing many fundraising events incur expenses that cut into monies received, they offered to get some fellow musicians together and play for free. When fellow friends and musicians were asked if they wanted to join them in helping out for a good cause the answer was a resounding yes. One of the fliers for an upcoming event stated that the “local band in the area” would be playing. The group all agreed they liked the sound of that and hence, The Local was born! This was a perfect solution for Matt and Kim…an outlet for their love of bringing music to people without taking too much time away from family. Currently Matt and Kim are lead singers with Matt playing rhythm guitar. Chase Peterson plays lead guitar, Luke McDuff is the bass player, Brandon Johnson is the drummer and Rob Ely plays keyboards and synthesizer.

After that first gig helping out a friend, they realized the blessings they received playing for free far outweighed any monetary compensation. Matt believes music should be experienced by as many people as possible. He says “There is something about listening and watching musicians play live that alleviates everyday stresses and worries. It can also transport an event and take it to another level. By taking away the hurdle of cost that would prohibit an organization to have live music, more people can experience the fun and entertainment live music brings.” Since the band has come together they have played for several charities and causes. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is near and dear to their hearts since their daughter Claire has been diagnosed with Type I diabetes. This year Claire got on stage and sang with them! They have also helped in fundraising efforts for the Center for the Developmentally Disabled, Wings for Water, Mantels and Martinis, Crank Out Hunger, and youth mission trips for Deerbrook Covenant Church. They also recently performed at Lee’s Summit’s Oktoberfest and the Gladfest in Gladstone, MO. They can play just about any style from MOTOWN and The Beatles to current tunes. Matt also volunteers his DJ skills when the need arises. Matt is owner/operator of the LLC simplesoundskc.com which specializes in creating live music experiences throughout the KC metro area. They currently offer three different group samplings to fit any occasion: The Local, DJ services, and the piano/vocal duo of Rob and Kim. Matt says he enjoys teaching music to elementary students, but he also enjoys being able to share his craft with the public. Matt and Kim love having a ‘hobby’ they can do together and say sharing their vocal talents to help support organizations and events doing good in the community is fulfilling . The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
