WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME DURING THE HEAT OF SUMMER?

Apart from eating ice cream any chance we get, our family enjoys spending time in the mountains where the humidity is low and temperatures are cooler. Because my Dad is Canadian and my Mom is from Texas, we would drive to both destinations during the summer. Although they’re long drives, we always took time to enjoy the scenery and wildlife including the Teton mountains, Yellowstone Park and Glacier Nationalgreat memories!

My favorite summer pastime has become spending time with grandkids. Whether I fly and spend a few days in Portland, Oregon to visit my three there or drive to Denver to see three others, I love hanging out with them. The last few summers the grandkids in Denver have come to spend a few days with me here, so I’ve made a list of things to do. I’m always looking for ideas if you have any!

Letter from the Editor SUMMER IS IN FULL SWING AND THE JULY HEAT IS COMING ON STRONG. After a year of “staying in,” our jam-packed summer schedule of baseball games, early morning sports conditioning, camps, outings and traveling is refreshing. It feels so good to be back at it, even though there were some great lessons learned in being still as a family and enjoying the slower pace. Although the “lazy days of summer” doesn’t seem to exist in our house right now, we have learned to be more content with the downtime and simple pleasures that remind

me of my own childhood. The extravagant outings aren’t as important to check off the summer bucket list as just time spent with the people most important in our lives. Cookouts and gatherings with friends and family is what I have missed most this past year, so we are soaking up as much of it as we can to make up for lost time. This summer has also brought a new opportunity to me professionally, as I have taken a position within Lifestyle Publications at our corporate office and will be transitioning out of the editor role and into a broader content creation role. I will still be part of the blueprint of Lee’s Summit Lifestyle, but will be behind the scenes working instead of directly bringing content to your doorstep each month. This is very bittersweet for me because I have loved every minute of being a part of this magazine and dearly love this wonderful community and all of the people I have had the opportunity to meet throughout the past 5 years of being your editor. COLONIAL GARDENS SHARES HOW TO TRANSFORM OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES

12

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | July 2021

IT IS THE SEASON FOR OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING, BUT HAVE YOU EVER COME HOME FROM AN OUTDOOR PARTY AND FELT INADEQUATE ABOUT YOUR OWN YARD? With some help from Colonial Gardens, creating eye-catching outdoor design does not have to be intimidating. Raechel Lukowski, marketing manager with Colonial Gardens, says the first step in establishing great outdoor design is to identify the space you are looking to enhance, whether that be a backyard, a patio, or a side porch. Next, she suggests taking measurements of the area and evaluating how much sun and shade it receives. She also emphasizes the importance of setting a budget and determining your top priority and what can wait until time and money allow. Cassidy Fox, a design specialist with Colonial Gardens, says people often start designing their outdoor spaces with something familiar such as hibiscus, salvia, petunias, pansies, and various hanging plants. As you begin developing ideas, Raechel says to consider incorporating multiple elements into the design.

“You want to create a space you’ll enjoy spending time in,” Raechel says. “So, if your family is the type to sit around a fire on a fall evening, throw a fire pit into your space. If you enjoy having a glass of wine and reading, invest in a quality patio set. You always want to engage all five senses—flowers for smell, herbs for taste, color for sight, textures for feel, and different elements such as a water feature or birdhouse for hearing.” While brainstorming ideas is important, Cassidy says it is also critical to narrow down ideas to a specific theme that can be executed with relative ease. She says people often have many different ideas they try to combine, and it becomes overwhelming and impractical. Here are four common areas around the yard and how Colonial Gardens suggests bringing more life to them: + THE FULLY SHADED PATIO CLOSE TO THE HOME. Japanese maples can be the perfect tree for a shaded patio area. Additionally, begonias and brunneras can complement the tree, and a Ratana furniture set can round it out. + THE PARTIALLY SHADED PATIO WITH A FIREPIT. A weigela bush can be a great option in this space. A bromeliad shade combo can also provide interest, and coral bells are a perennial that thrives in this environment. Add a copper bowl firepit to make this type of patio stand out. + THE FULL-SUN BACKYARD. While this type of area might seem more challenging, lilacs can thrive in this environment as well as lantanas, petunias, and coneflowers. Also consider putting a bird feeder in the corner. Cassidy says people sometimes do not attempt to grow + THE PARTIALLY SHADED SIDE OF THE HOME.

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | July 2021

I HAVE A REAL THING FOR CITRUS. If you’ve followed me for a while I’m sure you’ve picked up on that by now! I use dried citrus from tree to table for the holidays and in the warmer months I switch to fresh citrus of all kinds. This party is one that I had the honor of putting together for a friends baby shower. However, you could also use this same idea for a birthday party, wedding shower or any event that needs to be dolled up a bit. This is one of the advantages of using citrus as a theme… you can incorporate citrus into almost anything, any time of year! MIMOSA BAR For this Citrus themed party I made a “Make your own Mimosa” table. Here guests could pick up a pre-filled glass of orange juice and “choose their sparkle” by topping it off with their choice of Champagne or sparkling juice. It’s a crowd pleaser and such a beautiful display! I love when my guests can serve themselves in this way as it makes for an activity as well as a refreshment. Keep your Champagne and Sparkling juice cold in a DIY ice bucket (an ice bucket made from ice!). You’ve seen me do this before during the holidays with my ice bucket of evergreens and cranberries. For this summer version, I used slices of citrus, fresh bay leaves and white baby’s breath flowers. Go to @silvertoothhome for instructions on how to assemble an ice bucket of your own. PARTING GIFTS Parting gifts aren’t necessary to a party but if included makes your guests feel extra cared for. For these parting gifts I made homemade marshmallows, tucked into small white boxes trimmed with twine, dried orange and fresh bay leaf. Homemade marshmallows are far from the store bought kind. They are fancy enough to wrap up as gifts and just as great to use for your next campfire s’mores. MARSHMALLOW RECIPE + Vegetable Spray + 2 cups confectioners sugar (plus more as needed) + 6 ¼-ounce envelopes powdered unflavored gelatin + 3 cups granulated sugar + 2 cups light corn syrup + ½ teaspoon salt + 4 teaspoons pure vanilla extract + 1 cup cornstarch

Dust oiled foil generously with confectioners sugar. Set pan aside In your mixer bowl, add 1 cup of water. Very slowly sprinkle the powdered gelatin evenly around the surface of the water. Bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves and temperature reaches 240 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove from the heat and let stand briefly. Turn the mixer onto its slowest speed and SLOWLY pour the hot sugar into the gelatin by letting it run down the side of the mixing bowl to avoid splashing. Do not touch the outside of your mixing bowl, it will be VERY hot! Once incorporated, gradually increase the mixer speed to high and beat 10-12 minutes until the mixture is cooled and thickened. Beat in vanilla. Take the mixture and work quickly to scrape it into the prepared lined pan. Use a spatula that has been sprayed with vegetable oil or wet fingers before touching the mixture to avoid mess. After the mixture is in the pan, smooth

WATER & WOODS (CONTINUED) “We sail all sizes of sailboats, and people can learn how to sail here, and even take that skill to an ocean,” she says. “There are lots of options! Everything from impromptu day sail or an organized regatta with traveling sailors. Check out the calendar on our website. To help make sailing more accessible, we have a Boatshare program where people can use club-owned boats all year long for only $300/year. If you don’t know how to sail, we offer lessons. We sold out of our 70 lessons in March and are already getting people asking about the 2022 lessons.” Alyssa believes sailing is a fun way to enjoy the water, connect with nature and meet friends. The people are the best, always willing to help you learn. With no gas, it’s an inexpensive way to get out on the lake. She explains that YouTube has inspired a lot of people to learn how to sail. “Lake Jacomo provides an easy platform to learn all the basics you can apply to a bigger boat. We’ve sailed a 38’ boat from St. Petersburg, Fla. to Key West, Dry Tortugas, and back with friends of ours from Jacomo,” she says.

Alyssa learned to sail in Florida five years ago, and then came back to KC where she found Jacomo. She had no interest in racing, and after crewing with some people, fell in love with racing. “It’s so much fun to have an excuse to go sail every week with your friends. Racing in close quarters really helps refine your skills,” she says. “We always finish the races in the rigging lot sharing a drink with friends and catching up on everyone’s adventures.” The club enjoys giving back to the community through outreach events including a Marina Day and their Adaptive Sailing program. With so many sailing options available in our community, why not give it a try? Visit jacomosailingclub.org and myclotawana.org for more information. 36

REMODELING HOMES ON THE L AKE WITH REAL ESTATE INVENTORY AT HISTORIC LOWS AND NEW CONSTRUCTION BEING EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE, THERE ARE CURRENTLY A FEW OBSTACLES FOR THOSE SEEKING A DREAM HOME ON ONE OF LEE’S SUMMIT’S LAKES. Yet realtor Renee Amey says there is opportunity for remodeling older homes in the local lake communities. Renee says what little there is in terms of lakefront property inventory at Winnebago, Raintree, Lotawana, Lakewood and Woodland Shores has skyrocketed in price recently, and both buyers and sellers are seeing the benefits of putting their own touches on older homes.

“By making cosmetic changes to an older home, you are going to come out spending way less money than buying brand new,” Renee says. If the home is structurally sound, cosmetic changes are not as intimidating as people often think, Renee says.

She says she even has designers she can recommend to those who might be stuck in knowing what to do to update their home. “From an investment perspective, it’s awesome,” Renee says. “There are advantages to putting in your own sweat equity into it.” Eric and Amy Wiseman completed a major remodel on their lakefront property at Raintree Lake, and after the renovation they ended up selling the 28-year-old home CONTINUED >
