Resilience Is Key to Meeting Financial Goals In all walks of life, resilience helps – and that’s certainly true when it comes to achieving your financial goals. But to be resilient, you’ll need to overcome obstacles. For example, when investing in your IRA and 401(k), you may see your balances drop during periods of market volatility. To show resilience, though, you should remain invested. Building your IRA and 401(k) is one thing but protecting them is another. You may face situations in which you need a sizable amount of cash in a hurry, perhaps for a major car repair. Dipping into your retirement accounts early could result in penalties, but you can help avoid this setback by building an emergency fund.
Here’s one more challenge:
Creating a long-term investment strategy and having the confidence to keep following it. Your resilience can be strengthened by getting regular guidance from a financial professional.
You will face some bumps in the road on your journey toward achieving your financial objectives. But by being resilient, you can keep moving forward.

For some, it is nearly impossible to enjoy the holidays with a multitude of factors that add up to one very stressful season. Financial strains, balancing a full calendar of commitments, loneliness, sadness over the loss of a loved one, the inability to create the perfect iconic Christmas. We are told this is the season of giving; but we simultaneously hear season of getting. Over the years gift-giving has transitioned from simple to extravagant yet the memories that last the longest are not the gift itself but the feelings that came with it. Giving truly is the best way to enjoy the holidays. Science shows us that our brains release endorphins when we help others through charitable acts and give of ourselves. We can literally feel a euphoric sensation.

and compassion. Bringing peace and comfort certainly is high on the wish list this year. Spending a little more time thinking about what is meaningful and important to someone else, and setting aside your personal wants and needs is also an act of giving. How to Stay Healthy through Cold and Flu Season What a wonderful time of year. The air is cool, the holidays are here, you’ll soon be with friends and family…and everyone is getting sick. It’s just what happens in late fall. At least that’s what we’re led to believe. But could you and your family stay healthy during cold and flu season (not to mention COVID-19)? One of the best ways to not get sick this year is, of course, to not be around others who are sick. But with work and school in full swing, in addition to holiday get-togethers, that can be a little challenging. Here are some of the next-best things you can do to stay healthy as we head into the holidays. Wash Your Hands We touch a lot of things during the day, and kids definitely touch a lot of things that other kids have touched. Getting everyone in the habit of washing your hands for 20 seconds before and after meals, after blowing your nose, and before you touch your face will go a long way in helping to keep colds and flus at bay. Use Hand Sanitizer There are some times when washing your hands just isn’t feasible, namely when you’re out and about. Keep alcoholbased hand sanitizer in the car, diaper bag, and your purse to help your family stay healthy. For school-aged kids, put a small bottle of sanitizer in their backpack.
Don’t Touch Your Face (Unless You’re Covering a Sneeze or Cough) Kids are notorious for touching their faces—a lot. Starting them early with a habit of not touching their faces can be hard, but gentle reminders are definitely helpful. Also, be sure that you’re aware of touching your own face, as you’re the best role model for good behavior. Keep It Clean: Disinfect High-touch Areas High-touch areas can hold on to germs, and since everyone— healthy and sick alike—touches them, they should be cleaned regularly. These areas include, at a minimum, doorknobs, faucets, and toys. If your children use your mobile devices or hold on to your keys, add those to the mix as well. Update Your Vaccines One of the very best ways to stay healthy during cold and flu season is by keeping your vaccinations up to date. These include the standard childhood vaccines, as well as an annual flu shot and the COVID-19 shot. Approval for children as young as six is expected for the COVID-19 vaccine this fall, and infants from six months are eligible for the flu shot. If you haven’t yet updated your children’s vaccines, call our office to schedule your appointment.
We’re Ready! A safe and effective vaccine to protect our 5+ patients is here now!

BEYOND OUR CONTROL. We seek comfort and calm, surrounding ourselves with soft materials and soothing decor that appeals to all of our senses. We focus on the full VIP treatment during this season more than any other. Sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch are all equally tended to. With each new holiday season, a few of the staples reappear such as knitted throws, candles, and nostalgic trinkets. New trends and styles work their way into the familiar mix and we are refreshed and excited about the festive season of events once again. One of the most popular trends of 2021 included the Modern Farmhouse. The appeal for mixing the clean, sophisticated, modern look with hints of the rustic country is also rising in popularity with holiday decor. A focus on sustainability, upcycling, and recycling has moved to the forefront which has encouraged a greater appreciation for the nostalgic, relaxed, and subtle trend. Homemade felt ornaments, tassel garlands, wooden decorations, and bottle brush trees provide a nostalgic feeling along with an uncomplicated, familiar appeal. Christmas 2021 color trends to have a focus on earthy, muted tones. Moss green is gaining in importance as well as creamy whites, and warm brown. Don’t be afraid to incorporate navy, pinks, and burgundy as they have risen in popularity for 2021. An abundance of evergreen florals and natural, durable materials pays respect to the environment and evokes a familiar feeling in our holiday decor. Embracing nature by adding fresh greens, like cedar, pine, and cedar brings a little of the outdoors in, it adds texture and life, balancing the cold, commercial products. OPEN HOUSE
HOMEMADE H O L I DAY SALT DOUGH, OR DOUGH ART AS WE REFER TO IT IN OUR FAMILY, IS A SIMPLE YET BEAUTIFUL WAY TO ADORN SPACES AROUND THE HOLIDAYS. Making salt dough ornaments is a holiday tradition that we have been doing since I was a kid in the ’80s but the process has been around even longer than that! The use of salt dough is as old as dirt, or I guess I should say as old as clay. Even so, the salt dough has made a comeback in recent years and for good reason- it only requires 3 ingredients, and the festive end product will last for years to come. We still pull out the salt dough ornaments I made as a kid and place them on our tree each year. I love those old traditions can live throughout the decades as we find ways to reinvent them with current-day trends. That is exactly what I did here with these lovely Snowflake Salt Dough Ornaments. I hope you follow along to make some yourself this holiday season.

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
THEY NEED YOUR HELP FINDING THOSE RECIPIENTS. ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON
Last year’s giveaway campaign culminated in the distribution
PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
of $250,000 throughout the year to recipients from across the country who had various needs. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community members such as judges, Anna Sarol
police officers, teachers, mentors, social workers and readers like you nominated community members who were facing hardships. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers and stakeholders were able to help identify people who might have otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Anna Sarol. About six years ago Anna was paralyzed in a gymnastics accident when she was a freshman in high school, but until last year she did not have a stairlift in her home. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000 and made sure it was installed. “Stairlifts don’t come at a feasible price, and unfortunately our insurance denied coverage,” Anna says. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are.” The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of the giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients. Among those recipients were single mothers, families with children who were facing illnesses, individuals impacted by the loss of a job, unexpected deaths and more.

Another nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her two nephews and niece. The children came from an abusive situation involving violence, drugs, and neglect. Kathy, a single parent, worked tirelessly to provide for these children, but the family was still living in poverty despite her working seven days a week. Additionally, Kathy lost her housecleaning job during the pandemic and resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy.
“This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” CONTINUED >

“When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors. They experienced Christmas like their peers, which filled them with such pride as it was something they have wished for all their lives.” The case manager says the lesson is clear – when we give back to others, we truly gain so much more in the process. She said she was filled with overwhelming joy when she saw the children’s faces filled with smiles and a Christmas tree in their home for the first time. In addition, the aunt’s expressed desire to give back to others made the giving cycle full circle. In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient. She was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children, let alone providing them with a fun Christmas. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which impacted her income as the students attended a nearby school after the building was hit. The whole town was struggling as 220 people were injured and five were killed because of the tornado, and everyone needed encouragement. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. The leaders of Lifestyle Publications believe God has blessed them, so they want to be a blessing and encouragement to others. With this year’s giveaway being increased to $300,000 to give away throughout the year, it’s clear this is an opportunity to change many lives in the same way Anna’s was changed. “As a 2020 recipient of the Christmas giveaway, I am forever grateful I now can access my basement independently,” Anna says. “Locating a fully accessible household in my area is nearly impossible, and living in a state that experiences tornado warnings means finding a way to get to my basement by myself is crucial. Not only this, but I also now have the option of utilizing another level of my house to hang out with friends and family.” *Names changed for privacy

OUR TOWN HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING GIFTS AND HOLIDAY CHEER TO SENIORS
ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPERT
B E A SA N TA TO A SENIOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN FAMILIES DRAW CLOSER, WARMTH IS SHARED, AND SMILES BLOSSOM INTO MEMORIES AND LOVE. For many years, this time of year shines brighter due to the giving spirit of Home Instead. Michelle Brunell, the owner, explained that in 2004 the Home Instead Network launched the delightful program, Be A Santa To A Senior. Their objective is to give back to the community by providing gifts and holiday cheer to seniors who are less fortunate. Locally, they initiated the program during their first year of operation in 2004. Each holiday season, the program touches the lives of around 200 seniors in the community.
