WE HAVE A LOT OF RESTAURANTS TO CHOOSE FROM IN LEE’S SUMMIT. WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO SPOT OR TYPE OF CUISINE YOU LIKE BEST? The quality of restaurants in Lee’s Summit continues to improve and impress. We eat out a little too much and have probably tried them all. Our go-to is still Summit Grill.

Wow…that’s a tough question. I guess given the menu and the time available to prepare the meal has a big impact on my preference. A steak or hamburger on the charcoal is hard to beat when you have the time on a lazy weekend. However, we have enjoyed how awesome our electric, pellet smoker is for all sorts of menu items. Everything from a frozen pizza to steaks to cedar-planked salmon…our top preference has probably become the smoker. That said, I’m a long way from competition quality, but I sure do enjoy it.

WHAT DISH DO YOU OR YOUR SPOUSE COOK THAT YOUR FAMILY LOVES!? Our family is constantly on the go, so we generally have very little time to prepare time-consuming meals. When we do have the time, our family loves my wife’s Sweet Baby Back Rib recipe. It is a fall-off-the-bone great flavor experience that never disappoints.

WHAT VEGETABLE DO YOU LIKE NOW, THAT YOU DIDN’T LIKE AS A KID?

That’s become really easy to answer with all the fancy new ways to make brussels sprouts taste so good. Throw some bacon, blue cheese crumbles and some spices in a skillet or on the aforementioned grill or smoker, and it’s not even a veggie!.

How To Protect Yourself, and Others, Against Flu. The single best way to reduce the risk of seasonal flu and its potentially serious complications is to get vaccinated each year. Still, good health habits like avoiding people who are sick, covering your cough, and washing your hands can help stop the spread of germs and prevent illnesses like flu. The tips below will help you learn about actions you can take to protect yourself and others from flu and help stop the spread of germs. • Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. • Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick to help prevent spreading your illness to others. • Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. • Clean your hands. Washing your hands will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.

Preventing Flu At School And Work • Find out about plans your child’s school, childcare program, or college has if a flu outbreak or another illness occurs. • Ensure your child’s school, childcare program, or college routinely clean frequently touched objects and surfaces. • Ask how sick students and staff are separated from others and who will care for them until they can go home, and about the absentee policy for sick students and staff. • Find out about your employer’s plans if an outbreak of flu or another illness occurs and whether flu vaccinations are offered on-site. • Routinely clean frequently touched objects and surfaces, including keyboards and phones, to help remove germs. • Go home as soon as possible if you begin to feel sick while at work. Existing patients can call to make appointments for immunizations, or watch our Facebook page for flu clinic times.

We’re Ready! A safe and effective vaccine to protect our 12+ patients is here now!

WHY DO WE LOVE FALL SO MUCH? I HAVE NEVER MET A PERSON THAT DIDN’T GET EXCITED ABOUT FALL. The word comfort is frequently used when we explain what we love the most. Big bulky sweaters, gathering around fires, enjoying a football game, cuddling up with a good book, enjoying the changing colors of the leaves, and lighting the autumn candles. Most often we are excited about food. All comfort food. Let’s not forget about the drinks as well. Growing up we thought hot cocoa and apple cider were

Now I can pull up to Starbucks and start the daunting task of choosing hot or cold beverage and then begin to choose from a list something like Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte, Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, Nitro Cold Brew with Pumpkin Cream Cold Foam, Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino, Pumpkin Chai Frappuccino, Iced Vanilla Chai with Pumpkin Cream Cold Foam, Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte with Sweet Cream & Caramel Drizzle, Iced Pumpkin White Chocolate Mocha, Pumpkin Spice Caramel Macchiato, Iced Caramel Macchiato with Pumpkin Cream, Cali Style. E a r ly entrepreneurship served her well MACKINZE TABOR WAS JUST BARELY OLD ENOUGH TO HAVE AN ADULT BEVERAGE WHEN SHE STARTED HER BUSINESS. The 21-year-old had relocated to Lee’s Summit from the Lake of the Ozarks area, opening Laser, No Razor on Woods Chapel in April of 2017. More than four years later, Tabor now has seven employees, an expanded business - M-Power Salon & Spa - and an arsenal of services she offers to both her loyal customers and new clients alike. “I moved to Lee’s Summit without knowing anybody,” Mackinze recalls. “I started just by myself for the year just focused on laser hair removal and I slowly started to add other things. I was also working at a restaurant on nights and weekends to try and make it all work.”

14

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | October 2021

Mackinze changed her business name in April of 2021 and boasts a service list that many salons would envy, including: eyelash extensions, body waxing, eyebrow waxing, spray tans, facials, dermaplaning, teeth whitening, chemical peels, micro-needling, eyelash tint and lifts, hair services, permanent makeup and prom and event makeup. Coming to Kansas City worked well for Mackinze as a fan of the Chiefs and already a fan of many things KC. “I wanted to get out of the small town feel, so I thought, let’s give Lee’s Summit a try. And it’s not too far away from home,” she said, adding that she has fallen in love with the community. “I don’t ever see myself leaving Lee’s Summit.” Mackinze is a Cosmetology School graduate and, even as the owner, takes on clients full time. That’s the part she loves. Social media, on the other hand, is the part she’s forced to love. Mackinze said her most challenging day-to-day function as a business owner is “trying to keep up with social media and the platforms. Everything is always changing. I have no choice but to love social media.”

“When you live and work in the community, and that community has supported us since 1998, it is my responsibility to offer service to said community,” Matlock says. Matlock Dental Care’s first location was off South 291 Highway and Persells before moving to its current office at 301 NE Mulberry St. near St. Luke’s East Hospital. Matlock says the best gift he can give his patients is that of one-on-one time. “We are a busy practice, and one of my big things is making sure we manage the schedule such that every patient has their own individual time.” CityLifestyle.com/LeesSummit

These mini-meals save time because they don’t require cooking, and they can consist of foods such as string cheese, deli meats, crispy raw veggies, dips and spreads, crackers or pita chips, dried fruits, nuts and the like. Harbstreet also advises families to develop a structure for eating, especially during this era of working and schooling from home. Structured eating involves creating a specific meal plan and generally following it. This involves considering how you feel at certain times of day, recognizing when you feel tired or hungry and using that to analyze if you need more carbohydrates or proteins at specific times of day. She says one of the biggest mistakes people often make when they set out to eat healthier is to follow the advice of various online sources, including social media and celerity influencers. background: health and wellness. Both are certified holistic nutritionists. And together, they have about all aspects of the business covered. “We couldn’t do it any other way,” Brooke said. “We both just have the opposite skills the other lacks. I’ve learned a ton from him since he got a little bit of a head start on the nutrition angle.” Originally in Independence, the duo moved the business to Lee’s Summit and streamlined some products and processes. Today they offer a full line of supplements and vitamins, smoothies, bowls, whole-food supplements, organic skin care and a cooler with grab-and-go snacks and avocado toast.

“We saw a need for more super healthy options in Lee’s

Summit,” Brooke said of the move. “There is nothing 100 percent plant-based like we are in Lee’s Summit. We’re focused on trying to educate people on the good stuff to take and overall nutrition.” In the age of COVID, that is particularly important, too. Brooke said the shop never closed during the pandemic and supplement sales in fact increased. “The supplement industry as a whole has grown exponentially since the pandemic started,” Brooke said. The couple lives by the whole-food, energy-boosting model and the motto, “Let food be our medicine.” Customers will find a range of products that accomplish just that goal, from Vitamin C and fruits cold pressed into powders that support immune systems. beaten path, Chef ‘Dennis The Prescott’ is a culinary change maker whose feed you’ll want to feast on Originally an aspiring musician, Canadian-born Dennis Prescott’s journey began while in university with a single invitation from another solo musician who asked him to tour with them around the US. This eventually took him to Nashville where they began making records and pursuing their musical dreams. Yet, in the midst of all of this, Dennis was not taking care of himself — eating take out, dollar menus, etc, had become a way of life. A friend had a “come to Jesus” moment with him and stressed that he needed to start taking care of himself. Having no idea exactly what that meant or how to do so, the advice was simple: “You need to start eating better.”

44

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | October 2021

The St a r t “Go to the library and borrow some cookbooks,” his friend suggested. Dennis went to a nearby library and borrowed three books only to have his friend ask why he chose those in particular. Dennis remembers saying verbatim, “I don’t know? The guy on the cover looks kinda good looking, and I feel like I could probably pull these recipes off, and he seems really happy too!” As it turned out they were three books by Jamie Oliver; it’s just that he had no idea who Jamie Oliver was at the time. Flash forward and Dennis’ first dinner-hosting experiment was made up of twenty people from the music studio, all sitting in camping chairs with beer koozies and makeshift tables in his apartment. “I remember at the time this moment of, okay, the food is on the table, it’s a stressful thing, and then everybody tucks in and they take their first bite, and there’s a moment of hush that kind of came over everyone; it got really quiet just for a second, and then everyone started talking and getting into it and I fell in love with food right there at that moment. What eventually followed were 13 episodes over nine months where the Restaurants on the Edge team traveled to and filmed restaurant revivals that included three in Canada, one in the continental US, one in Hawaii, and others outside of North America, including Hong Kong, Slovenia, Austria, Malta, St. Lucia and Finland. T r avel R ecom mend at ion s for Food ies “Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.” Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland. “Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.” Restaurants on the Edge is important and meaningful to Chef Prescott because it tells stories of hope and joy and redemption around the kitchen. Oftentimes the food space can be very stressful, but he believes that at the end of the day, people just want to spend time with other people that they love. One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start? I don’t know how to get going, so I just don’t.’ Rather than overcomplicating it, Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there. “Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.”
