Letter from the Editor DECEMBER IS (FINALLY) HERE, AND THE PEACE, BEAUTY AND TRADITIONS THAT THIS SEASON BRINGS COULD NOT BE MORE WELCOMED. As my family and I spent last week decorating our home for the holidays, all of the warm feelings and memories that I hold dear from Christmas’s past come rushing to my mind. This is always my favorite time of year, and I love watching my kids experience the wonder of the holidays as I once did.

Some of our traditions are not possible this year, but as I reflect back on my own childhood and the things that made this season memorable, it really is the simple things that come to mind: driving around looking at lights, decorating sugar cookies while listening to Bing Crosby, throwing handfuls of tinsel on the tree and adorning it with stringed popcorn, and the excitement of waking up on Christmas morning. With being one of ten children, opening presents was a bit of a free-for-all at my home, but there was always a moment of calm before the storm to first sing happy birthday to Jesus and then to open our stockings one at a time in an orderly fashion. Among our stocking goodies, there was always a guarantee that an orange would be at the bottom of the sock and a candy cane hanging on the outside. I don’t think any of us ever ate the orange, but regardless, it was always there. Our holidays were never extravagant, and I’m sure they were a little crazy for my parents, but the love and magic are the feelings that remain.

Why You Should Send a Settlement Offer Settling a divorce or family law matter is something most parties desire. Trials are expensive. Not only are they expensive, but in a trial the result rests in the hands of one family court judge. Most reasonable parties do not want to put their case in the hands of one judge. To settle a divorce or family law matter, it usually takes one party to take the first step towards settlement. In other words, somebody has to extend the olive branch first and broach the topic of settlement. Settlement negotiations often begin with one party sending an offer through their attorney to the opposing counsel. While initial settlement offers do not always result in a settlement, it can open the door to more negotiations. Many ask if it matters who sends the initial settlement offer. If one party issues the first settlement offer, some worry that offer shows weakness. In some cases, where the positions are far apart, some fear sending a settlement offer is futile. However, sending a settlement offer does not ordinarily signal weakness. Instead, it shows that a party is willing to be reasonable to reach a constructive
resolution to the case. It can indicate that they are ready to swallow their pride to reach a resolution. Most judges, before they hear a trial in a divorce or family law matter, also want to know if the parties have attempted settlement. When parties have not even made an attempt, some judges may have concerns. Settlement negotiations are technically inadmissible at trial. It is possible, however, that a judge could hold it against a party if they did not attempt meaningful settlement negotiations. Judges often know about the settlement efforts from pretrial or settlement conferences in a case. Instead of worrying about whether it looks weak to issue a settlement offer, parties should instead focus more on appearing reasonable to the court. Being reasonable often results in obtaining a positive result if the case ends up in trial. Further, a settlement offer can ultimately lead to a settlement. When there is a settlement, parties save money on attorneys’ fees. The parties can also put to rest the emotional anguish and stress of being in the midst of a divorce or family law matter. However, it is vital to have enough information about the finances or the particulars of the case. These details can be gathered through formal or informal
discovery to make an informed settlement offer. To make an informed settlement, parties often need the tax returns and statements regarding all marital property and debt. When valuations are needed, the parties can hire experts to value marital property such as real estate, stock options, and business interests. With children involved, the parties may need school and medical records. Once this takes place, most parties should think about sending a settlement offer. Sending the initial settlement offer may not work, but it can begin the conversation. It also signals a willingness to negotiate and be reasonable. 2. Using a sharp knife, thinly slice citrus and arrange on a cookie sheet. 3. Bake until slices are mostly dried (3-4 hours), occasionally flipping for an even bake. *Slices are done when the rinds are hard and dry, but the centers are still tacky. The slices will continue to dry out after being removed from the oven so “under done” is OK!

RE PURPOSE OLD ATL A S ACCE NTS: Here I am repurposing an old atlas, but the atlas idea can be swapped out for any other paper item you have on hand such as unused sheet music, book pages or brown paper bags. Here are a few ideas on how to use your repurpose paper: 1. Stocking Stuffers: roll pages and stuff them in empty stockings until Santa comes. 2. Tablescape: slip whole sheets under plate settings and google “origami tree” and make a personalized seating arrangement. 3. Gifts: add smaller pieces of pages to embellish gift bags and gift boxes. 22

home. My mantel includes a vintage saw, thrifted brass candlesticks and bugle horns hung on the stockings. For my citrus tablescape I shopped my house and found a striped throw blanket to use as a tablecloth and tea towels to use as napkins. (Tip: it’s all about the color and pattern you have in mind, not necessarily the original purpose of an item.) I completed the look by using more of my thrifted brass candlesticks, wooden cutting boards and finally adding dried oranges with faux greens to top it off. For my atlas themed tablescape I followed the same idea—thrifted cloth napkins and white dishes, gold chargers that I already owned, and old atlas pages used under plates and as place setting cards.

DIY ICE BUCKET: An ice bucket made out of, well, ice! This is a show-stopper that costs nothing but a little time using items that you probably already have. Surprisingly, this ice bucket will last for hours once placed out for use and after you’re done, put it back in the freezer (adding a bit more water) for another time. I typically use one ice bucket the whole holiday season with a last hurrah on New Year’s Eve. 1. Large container 2. Small container (just a bit bigger than the diameter of a bottle) 3. Small rocks (enough to fill your small container) 4. Filler of your choice (pine clippings, cranberries, flowers, sliced fruit, or even things like beads or glitter!). In this ice bucket I used clippings from our boxwoods and fresh cranberries. Full video instructions are located at @silvertoothfarmhome highlight titled “ice bucket.” Tag me with your own ice bucket creations—I can’t wait to see! 24

I get to claim credit for naming them.” “I was first motivated to bring The Monarch Bar after traveling internationally for years,” David says. “During my travels for both work and pleasure, I would often frequent many of the most famous luxury cocktail bars in the world. Coming home to Kansas City, I realized that we did not have anything that would nearly compare. So, I decided to invest in the creation of The Monarch Bar, which opened in 2017. After seeing The Monarch Bar’s great success and the welcome and support that it enjoys from the city, I felt confident in opening a second bar in the Leawood area with my partners Christian Moscoso and Brock Schulte. The entire cocktail menu will be an experience to try—I’m sure the guests will each have their own favorites! The entire perimeter of the room has been lined with windows and mirrors, creating a 360 degree atmosphere of both real and reflected views of the skyline. The ceiling accommodates over 9,000 small LED lights that simulate a starry sky. The end effect results in the guest feeling as though they are floating above the city, with views all around, under a beautiful starry sky.” New Year’s Eve at The Mercury Room will be one for the books. “I know we are all ready to say goodbye to 2020! To compliment the special atmosphere and drinks and to celebrate the occasion, we are flying in a DJ from Los Angeles to play in the room on New Year’s Eve. It will be a spectacularly beautiful and memorable way to say hello to a much welcomed New Year!” “The Mercury Room has a strictly enforced dress code. SUMMIT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY’S ECAMPUS IS MEETING NEEDS DURING THIS UNIQUE SCHOOL YEAR
36
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | December 2020
ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON THIS IS ARGUABLY THE MOST CHALLENGING SCHOOL YEAR ON RECORD FOR BOTH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, AND DR. KIMBERLEE GILL, ACADEMIC DEAN AT SUMMIT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY, DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR ECAMPUS THIS YEAR AS A “HERCULEAN EFFORT.” She says it all came about as the result of the “innovative disruption” the pandemic has brought to education. While online learning was growing in popularity before March, the pandemic has forced schools across the country to bolster their online offerings. “I think education has a shift in momentum like nothing I have ever seen,” Dr. Gill says. “Teachers and students alike are seeing benefits to online learning.” While all grades at Summit Christian Academy have been meeting fully in-person this school year for students who have chosen that option, the school is also offering the eCampus for those who desire or need to stay home. The school is adhering to standard mask and social distancing policies in-person, and there are many changes to the fine arts offerings and events to promote distancing and safety. The school has a total enrollment of approximately 850 students, and about 70 to 130 of those students are learning online. The school has given families the option to toggle back and forth between online and in-person learning, so online enrollment numbers fluctuate. Families have also been given the option to choose a hybrid model of learning, which involves learning in-person three days a week and learning from home two days a week. Dr. Gill believes teachers are the unsung heroes of the pandemic as they have had to re-envision how they teach. After all, the school only offered a few online classes before March, and now they have an entire K-12 eCampus. To develop their online options, Dr. Gill said they studied and learned during the spring semester and did focus groups to see what went well and what they could improve. Among other efforts, the school hired additional staff and purchased cameras and Chromebooks. Sarah Coats, director of development, says the online options reflect the school’s commitment to bolster individualized learning and provide options so each student can be a successful learner. As an eCampus teacher, most of what Anna Kale does is communicate with families and teachers and coordinate coursework and instruction. “I’ve served classes of kids as a teacher for the last few years, so knowing everything it takes to be a successful educator, it brings me joy that I am able to serve other teachers,” Kale says. Dr. Gill says she is finding herself rethinking what attendance means for students, and she is understanding the profile of a student who learns well online and the profile of a student who learns best in-person. Kale says families enjoy the flexibility online learning gives students, and they have found the most successful online learners are typically those who are involved in various interests outside of school. Even if learning takes place online, personal connection and interaction are still essential, Dr. Gill says. “It must be humanized,” Dr. Gill says. “We cannot have students staring at computers for hours and hours without engagement.”
To this end, Kale says they are working to find ways to best incorporate online learners into the classroom. While online learning options at SCA were developed to meet needs during the pandemic, they will continue to play an important role in education for years to come. CityLifestyle.com/LeesSummit

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | December 2020
AS
THE YEAR DRAWS TO A CLOSE, IT’S FAIR TO SAY THAT WE’VE ALL LEARNED SOMETHING ABOUT THE SOCIAL, POLITICAL, PHYSICAL AND ENVI-
RONMENTAL FORCES THAT HAVE AFFECTED EVERYONE. And, in some ways, our lives will be changed, perhaps permanently. But as an investor, what lessons can you learn from 2020?
h e r e a r e s o m e t o c o n s i d e r : + The markets look ahead. Here’s something many investors discovered in 2020: Investment prices don’t always move in the same direction as the overall economy. This might not have seemed apparent right after the COVID-19 pandemic struck in mid-February, as the overall economy and the stock market took big hits. But just about five weeks later, the markets began a rally that lasted several months. During this time, the economy also recovered somewhat, but still remains on weak footing. What can explain this discrepancy between the markets and economic activity? Essentially, economic numbers, such as the unemployment rate and gross domestic product (GDP), reflect what’s happening today, but the markets are always looking toward tomorrow, which means they are anticipating a stronger economic recovery and the results that come with it, such as greater corporate earnings in 2021. No one can say for sure what the future holds, but you can usually know the market’s opinion by its performance. + Opportunities will always exist for investors. Although the coronavirus seems unprecedented, the equity markets have rebounded from many crises before it. From war to global financial meltdowns, the market has seen it all. But even at the height of these events, when the markets might be most affected, individual segments or industries can do well. For example, in the current environment, when many people have been forced to work and shop from home, and get their entertainment online, it’s probably not surprising that some parts of the technology sector have seen their economic activity grow, along with their stock prices. Here’s the key point: Investment opportunities always exist, especially in times of market stress—and smart investors will find them and incorporate them into their portfolios in a way that’s appropriate for their goals and risk tolerance. + Patience and discipline can pay dividends. As mentioned above, the stock market dropped sharply in the weeks immediately following the pandemic, but then gained steadily for months afterward. Investors who tried to “cut losses” and exited the market likely did so at the wrong time and missed out on the beginning of the upturn. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon—investors who overreact to market declines often find themselves on the investment sidelines just when a new rally begins. Rather than being reactive in this way, you may be better off sticking with a long-term investment strategy, and buying and selling investments only when it makes sense for your situation, such as when you need to diversify your portfolio. For many reasons, it’s unlikely that we’ll see anything exactly like 2020 again. But some of the investment lessons we learned are applicable in every year—so keep them in mind for 2021 and beyond. bullet journaling 101 ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN
PHOTOGRAPHY ESTÉE JANSSENS
Let’s face it—in today’s so-much-to-do-and-so-little-time cultural mindset, it
can be hard to keep track of everything we need to do. Wake up—did you get enough sleep? Brush your teeth. Feed the kids. Feed the dog. Get ready for work. Make your lunch. Those are just six things to think about in the span of 15 minutes after your alarm goes off.
With all of these things to keep track of and our lives moving a mile a minute,
anything we can find to streamline our obligations (and our thoughts) can be a lifesaver! Enter: bullet journaling. It’s equal parts calendar, meal tracker, diary, self care and, well, really anything else that you want to keep tabs on! The “mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system,” coined by creator Ryder Carroll, can help you master the art of intentional living—any way you want to.
