As fast as kids grow, you need quality at a good price. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTDOORS THIS TIME OF YEAR? After a long winter, my family and I are excited to be able to ride our bikes and take long walks. Currently I am “in training” for the corporate challenge, so I am doing a little running too.

Because from a very small beginning it turns into a “mighty” tree, and I look at life this way. We all start out small, but can achieve magnanimous things through persistence, patience, and faith. I tell my clients that we can accomplish whatever they dream of and deem as most important “little by little”... by setting objectives and sticking with a plan. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN LEE’S SUMMIT? One of my favorite shops is Living Stone in downtown Lee’s Summit. I can always find unique gifts for a new baby, special occasions, even for people retiring. For myself, I like their lotions and decorations. What a special place! WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTDOORS THIS TIME OF YEAR? My husband and I still enjoy walking our dogs each day...rain or shine. We love watching Andey and Barney snoop around for other dogs and perk up their ears when they hear barking. Barney finds “prizes”- a discarded bag, paper, or leftover food and gets so excited! But we especially like our jaunts when the weather gets warmer and more pleasant. We love sunny days when the temperature is still a bit brisk and we can happily greet other dog-walkers along the way.

RYAN BARBER WHAT WOMEN HAVE MADE AN IMPACT IN YOUR LIFE? I thought it would be appropriate to honor the women that have made the biggest impact in my life- my Mom, Kay Barber, who still loves me to this day! She made breakfast for us every morning and we ate together before school. My wife, Elizabeth, who has been my best friend since middle school, makes me laugh and takes great care of me and our children. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTDOORS THIS TIME OF YEAR? We love yard work and planting our garden. There’s nothing like the fresh smell of spring, new growth, and rich soil to distract our minds from busy life. We love to ride bikes and hike (even in Kansas City). Spring screams the beginning of Sporting KC’s season. We will watch all of the games! WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE FLOWER OR PLANT? I really enjoy the lawn and the garden. Creeping phlox in early spring are vibrant and lively. Clematis offer a beautiful bloom and it is also trainable. There is nothing better than fresh veggies from your own garden. We plan to grow tomatoes, peppers and beans this year. Lastly, resurrection lilies are one of my favorites- you get to see them come to life twice!

Julie has spent so much of her life volunteering in the inner city with urban youth and working with the homeless community. She has such a heart for kids in the juvenile system and has mentored so many teens who have lost their way or experienced trauma. She sees people for their best not their worst and has a gift for knowing a person’s potential and making them feel valued.

WHISKE Y IN A TE ACUP WHISKEY ISN'T JUST FOR THE GENTS ANYMORE. THROW YOUR OWN TASTING PARTY!

Whiskey 101 Distilling and brewing have a lot in common. Both start with a base of grains. In the U.S., whiskey is defined as any spirit that starts with grain and is aged in contact with wood. At Restless Spirits, Shannon oversees the production of three whiskeys—the Sons of Erin, which is an imported Irish Whiskey, Gullytown, which is distilled from scratch on premise at Restless Spirits, and Stonebreaker, which is a blend of the two. Gullytown is Kansas City's first single-malt whiskey, meaning it is produced by one distillery out of one grain bill. Shannon starts with a grain bill of 100 malted barley and double distills on a pot still. She then ages in two different barrels--one new charred oak and one bourbon cask. The barrels in which whiskey is aged directly affects the color of the spirit. The resulting whiskey is deep in color and rich and full-bodied with hints of dark cherry and a smooth vanilla finish. 14

THERE’S A MODERN MISCONCEPTION THAT THERE’S SUCH A THING AS ‘GIRLY’ DRINKS AND ‘MANLY’ DRINKS. The world of spirits is inhabited and enjoyed by both genders. Of course, those making spirits are still predominately men, which the exception of Benay Shannon, the head distiller at Restless Spirits in Kansas City.

me the ropes on how to taste and share the goodness of what the Scots call the ‘water of life.’

The Set Up WHAT YOU NEED: To host a successful whiskey tasting, start with the star of the show--the spirits. It's nice to have a range of flavors so include a lighter, more delicate whiskey like the Sons of Erin, which starts with 96% corn and 4% barley, as well as a blended whiskey like the Stonebreaker, as well as a classic single malt. Traditionally, whiskey should be tasted in a tulip shaped glass to help point aromas at your nose, but any receptacle will do in a pinch. Often, adding a tiny bit of water or an ice cube will help to bring out more latent flavors in the whiskey as well. The water will lower the proof of the whiskey and lets the flavors shine through. Don't be afraid to add a pitcher of room temperature water to the table. There is a difference between drinking and tasting. When drinking, there's nothing more to be done than enjoy. When tasting, you should pay attention to the color of the liquid, aromas before you drink, and then finally, the flavors as they roll over your tongue. The finish will be the lingering flavors left after you swallow. For pairing, look for foods that mimic the flavors in the whiskey. For a full-bodied single malt, go for bold flavors like smoked salmon or strong, funky cheeses. Gorgonzola, bleu or funkier soft cheeses can stand up against the robust flavor of a barreled spirit. To bring out the sweetness, include dried fruits such as dried cherries or bananas. Briny, herbal flavors like pickled olives can also accent lighter, more floral whiskeys. On the flip side, you can also pair stronger flavors in food with the more delicate whiskeys to allow them to balance each other out rather than compete.

The Drinks If you don't have a bottle of Gullytown, Stonebreaker or Sons of Erin on hand, look for these styles: Single Malt—Most recognizably associated with Scotch Whisky, there's a lot of diversity in this style. Single malts tend to be categorized for the length of time that they spend in the barrel. For Irish whiskey, try Red Breast. For an accessible beginner Scotch, try a Highland Scotch like Glenfiddich or Macallan. Blended

snobs will say that there's nothing else besides single malts, there are some great blended whiskeys out there as well. Try a bottle of Four Roses Bourbon. Plus, you'll have some on hand for that Derby Day mint julep! Grain Whiskeys—Without the restrictions of a 100% malt grain bill, these whiskeys can have more delicate flavors. Many Japanese producers are excelling in this style. Try the Suntory Chita Whiskey.

The Recipe PATENT MEDICINE

+ 2 oz of Gullytown Double Barrelled Single Malt Whiskey

+ .5 oz Earl Grey simple syrup + 3-5 dashes of orange bitters + cocktail cherry + orange peel Combine whiskey, simple syrup and bitters over ice in a shaker. Shake until cold and strain in an old fashioned glass. Top with a cherry and garnish with a swatch of orange peel. Enjoy! To make Earl Grey syrup, combine equal parts sugar and water and bring to a boil until all sugar is dissolved. Soak three Earl Grey tea bags or the equivalent amount of tea in a teaball for 20-30 minutes. Remove tea and cool. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. 16

BRIGHT, BOLD COLOR IS MAKING A COMEBACK, AND LEE’S SUMMIT’S MELISSA RODGERS IS UP-AND-COMING FOR HER PUNCHY, ECLECTIC STYLING. Rodgers and her husband, Kevin, purchased their 1970’s era quad-level home in the Lakewood neighborhood four years ago. From the outside, it’s an unassuming beige residence, no different than any other on the quiet cul-de-sac. But step inside, and you’ll find yourself in a space that’s become both Melissa’s sanctuary and a creative showcase for her fun, laid-back style. ‘I don’t really have a recipe,” Rodgers says. “Just a dash of this and a dash of that. It’s my personality.” When the Rodgers moved in, they took the entire first floor of the former rental down to the studs, opening up the kitchen, breakfast nook and dining areas and making room for their passion for entertaining. Both Melissa and Kevin are inspired by familial creativity; with artists, engineers, contractors and designers in their family trees. Kevin put himself through college as a carpenter. With this background, the couple approaches their personal home renovation and design with a can-do attitude and a shoestring budget. But when their first-floor demolition revealed an electrical problem, much of the renovation budget was diverted to its repair. Rodgers invested in rich, wide-plank acacia flooring and gold West Elm Mobile chandeliers for the dining room, but the backsplash tile was nixed, so she stenciled and hand-painted the teal subway tiles that line the walls of her galley kitchen. She brings this budget-savvy approach to clients’ projects as well. “I have a save and splurge mentality,” she says. “You do not need to spend a small fortune on everything in your home. Invest a little extra on timeless quality pieces.” Rodgers, a former M.A.C. makeup artist and self-taught interior designer and stylist, has a natural affinity for adding pops of color through accessories while keeping a neutral background that’s flexible to change. Her creativity extends to mixing higher-end pieces with budget ones, rustic furnishings with modern. For example, her sitting room is furnished with a sleek white Ikea bureau, refashioned with painted legs across from a vintage chair. In the dining room, the Rodgers made their roughhewn farmhouse table out of salvaged wood and pipes and paired it with a set of chairs Melissa thrifted for $10 and re-upholstered.

Rodgers’ journey in taking her own home from shabby to chic has inspired her to launch and grow her own personal brand, Melissa B. Rodgers, Domestic Stylist. She offers e-design services, in-person home design consultation and a-la-carte home styling services. While Rodgers’ Lakewood neighbors are already clued-in to her talents, Instagram has helped her gain a larger following outside her personal sphere. In the past year and a half, one of Rodgers clients’ homes was featured on Houzz, and her audience spiked from 700 to 7,000.

Don’t place too many patterns on top of each other (break them up with solids). The eye needs a place to rest, and too many patterns will feel chaotic.

beet-tahini faux hummus serves 4 - 6 Ingredients + 1 pound beets (3-4 medium beets) + 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice + 1/2 cup tahini + 1/2 teaspoon garlic + salt + extra virgin olive oil Directions 1. Peel and chop beets into small cubes. Drizzle with olive oil and season lightly with salt. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place beet cubes on aluminum foil and enclose. Put aluminum foil packet on baking sheet and cook beets until tender. 2. Once tender, remove beets from aluminum foil packet and allow beets to cool. Place beets, tahini, lemon juice and garlic in food processor. Process while slowly adding 1/4 cup olive oil through opening of food processor. Transfer to serving bowl then season generously with salt. Allow to sit covered for at least 30 minutes before eating. 3. Serve with a light drizzle of oil.

Agritourism opportunities in the suburbs aren’t always plentiful, but Colonial Gardens is expanding and providing Jackson County with various opportunities to connect with nature. The business began 50 years ago as Colonial Nursery, and it got its start by selling trees and shrubs. Over the last half-century, the business has expanded and now includes a farm-share program, a 5,000-tree “You Pick” orchard, an event space, a café, classes, an expanded greenhouse, a new modernized garden center and more. Simply put, Colonial Gardens is working to offer all things related to horticulture and agriculture with an increasing focus on health and wellness. “I know we are one of the only organizations in the country pulling together horticulture and agriculture in this way,” says Kelly Chamberlain, general manager. Many of the current offerings have been added during the last several years. In 2016, Tory Schwope purchased the business and began an extensive remodeling and expansion effort that culminated when they re-opened and re-branded in April 2018 as Colonial Gardens. “We’ve lost our connection to the outdoors, healthy food and agriculture,” Chamberlain says. “We wanted to build a destination for families and communities to experience these things and come together to connect with agriculture and horticulture.”
