WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS WINTER WE’VE HAD?
I said to a friend a few days ago that I’ve never wanted to start mowing our yard like this before. I’m good with the four seasons we get, and usually enjoy the first annual snowfall, but enough is enough already! Bring on the 100 degree heat- index days. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PARK AND WHY?
I think Rocky Mountain National Park is the ultimate playground. The summer is my favorite time of year there with all of the different things to do. It’s a great family destination and makes you really appreciate the natural beauty of our country. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT SPRING?
Having an April birthday always makes it a great time of the year for me. The sun is finally starting to break through the clouds and the annual work on my golf game can begin in earnest. The budding flowers, trees and green grass are all great too!
MATTHEW P. SIBBING WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT SPRING?
Obviously, after this winter, I will mostly be looking forward to the warmer temperatures spring will bring. My favorite thing about spring lately has been coaching and watching my three kids play their spring sports. We have one that plays baseball and flag football, a softball player and a track and soccer athlete. Spring is always busy, but a lot of fun. WHAT’S YOUR IDEA OF A GREAT NIGHT OUT IN LEE’S SUMMIT- WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
My wife and I really enjoy trying new places to eat, and luckily Lee’s Summit has had a flourish of newer restaurants recently. We enjoy Third Street Social , Pearl Tavern and Smoke Brewing Company just to name a few. Downtown Lee’s Summit has a number of places to catch live music, so if we can grab dinner and catch a live show, then that’s a pretty good night! WHAT TOPS THE LIST ON PLACES YOU HAVE TRAVELED?
We have been blessed to travel to a number of places, but New Zealand is probably on the top of the list. We traveled there with my parents, which was very special. The views and scenery were unbelievable. We saw many places where films had been shot, such as The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I really hope to be fortunate enough to travel there again someday.
MATT KNEHANS WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE WINTER OF 2018-19?
I have enjoyed the snowfall and the children missing school. It gave us the opportunity to slow down from the busy lives we have created and allowed us to enjoy each other’s company. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT SPRING?
The smells of spring, getting outside and working in the yard, and watching the cycle of life begin in nature. HOW DOES YOUR FAMILY CELEBRATE EARTH DAY?
We plant trees on our property. Usually two shade and two fruiting trees.

SPRING IS FINALLY HERE! I think I can speak for most of us and say that warmer temperatures, budding trees, green grass and the sunshine is a welcome friend after the long winter we all just endured. I can’t remember a year where I yearned for spring to come quite like I did this year. While I love the four seasons we get to experience living in the Midwest, I have to admit I was pretty envious these past few months of my family and friends who live in warmer climates. With spring comes the desire to get out and explore the city more. Dog parks, trails, outdoor patios and parks are bustling with people, and I can’t wait to be part of it. Gardens and seedlings are being prepped, and for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmers markets around town are the perfect place to pick up fresh produce and support local farmers and growers. It all sounds glorious to me right now, as I am guessing many of you can relate to how ready I am to thoroughly enjoy this season. For our April issue, we wanted to feature some of our favorite things about the chang-

DEBBIE WHITE AT REECE NICHOLS LEADS THE WAY ARTICLE LISA MOYER | PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
H o m e
FOR DEBBIE WHITE, SENIOR SALES EXECUTIVE AT REECE NICHOLS IN LEE’S SUMMIT, A QUIET EVENING SPENT AROUND THE FIREPIT AT HER HOME IS ONE OF LIFE’S SIMPLE PLEASURES. Her home is where she loves to cook, listen to music, and enjoy the company of her husband of 40 years, Kevin, along with their children, grandchildren and rescue dogs. White understands the profound importance of the home—where people treasure their families and pursue their passions in a place they love. It’s what motivates her every day. “I love helping people realize the American dream of home ownership,” White says. “Whether purchasing their first home, moving up to the next, or downsizing to fit their needs, I love opening the door to new chapters in their lives.” As a longtime resident of Lee’s Summit, White has been serving the KC metro for 19 years with skill, sincerity, integrity, and enthusiasm. “Debbie White is fully committed to her clients and to the community,” says business associate Cindy Stokes. “As a business referral, we are ALWAYS confident that our clients will be treated with dignity and respect when we refer them to Debbie. We never question her knowledge in the real estate market and completely trust her opinion and advice.”

0 2 Remove any extra leaves to create clean stems. It’s okay to leave some foliage, but remember that you’ll also have greenery to fill in any extra space.
0 3 Measure the flowers against your vase of choice and cut to size. Be sure to cut the stems at a diagonal. This will let the flowers soak up more water and help them stay alive longer.
0 4 Fill your vase half full with water. You’ll want to change the water every three days. 0 5 Pour the plant food into the vase and stir. 0 6 Start by criss-crossing your foliage to create a base. Forming this lattice pattern will create a sturdy base for your other flowers.
0 7 Add in your focal flowers, making sure they are spread out. The focal flowers are the ones you want to highlight. They may be the most colorful, the biggest or just your favorites.
0 8 Add in any of your secondary flowers. Secondary flowers tend to be smaller and will round out the flower arrangement.
0 9 Rearrange or fill in as needed. Remove any petals that are wilted and adjust the foliage so that it fills in any empty spaces.

+ When arranging flowers in a tall or cylinder vase, it’s important to consider which flowers you are choosing. The vase itself is already large and makes a statement, so you can choose just a few types of flowers. The flowers you decide on should have long and sturdy stems. Find one colored variety that can be used as the centerpiece and then fill in neutral toned secondary flowers around it. + When arranging flowers in a medium vase you have the most freedom. Medium vases usually have a wide opening and can fit many floral varieties. Try picking a colorful main and secondary flower and then filling in the rest of the vase with textured neutral colors. With this many flowers, it’s important to criss-cross the stems or even tie them with twine so that they stay in one place. + Arranging flowers in a small vase looks best when there are a few bright statement flowers. To create a more dynamic look, choose contrasting colors and a variety of textures. With a smaller vase, it’s not necessary to fill the base with greenery because there won’t be as much extra space that needs to be filled in. WARM SPRING DAYS CAN LEAVE US DREAMING OF THE SANDY SHORES OF A LAKE OR OCEAN GETAWAY. Fortunately, right here in the Kansas City area, Lake Jacomo, a gorgeous 970-acre lake nestled in the heart of Jackson County’s Fleming Park, offers a plethora of activities to satisfy the tastes of any outdoor enthusiast. The lake officially opened to the public May 30, 1959 and was the brainchild of Harry S Truman in 1932. He loved the idea of creating a recreational lake for the citizens of Jackson County. The idea came to fruition in 1952. Seven years later it was completed and aptly name Lake Jacomo, an acronym for Jackson County, MO. The lake offers countless activities, both on the water and off. Lake Jacomo’s limited-horsepower regulation ensures a beautiful and relaxing setting for the sailing enthusiast, those looking to enjoy a leisure pontoon, paddle board, or pedal board ride. The marina is the region’s largest boat rental facility with more than 60 watercrafts available. Fishermen can expect an exceptional experience since the lake abounds with crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, walleye, carp, and catfish. For those looking for fun beyond the lake, the area provides more than six miles of trail for hikers of all levels, and 14 picnic shelters.

LAKE JACOMO
(C ON TI N U ED)
This year marks Lake Jacomo’s 50th anniversary, and millions of people throughout Greater Kansas City have enjoyed this jewel of Jackson County Parks. Jackson County Executive, Frank White, Jr. says, “Lake Jacomo brings back so many great memories for me. As a child, I spent many summer days on the water with my dad who would rent boats for us. In the winter, we’d cast our lines off the dock to go fishing. For many families like mine, Lake Jacomo is great way to spend quality time together, meet new people and explore the outdoors. Now as county executive, I want other children to have that same experience. I’m proud to say I am accomplishing that goal through my Kids to the Parks summer program, which takes children from the inner city to our county parks, including Lake Jacomo. They get to see new things, engage in different activities and learn about nature and wildlife. If they enjoy it, enthusiasm for the lake spreads to family and friends, allowing us all to share in its beauty. Lake Jacomo is a great community asset, and we are committed to ensuring it’s here for everyone to cherish for another 50 years.” With so many options for relaxation and exploration, beautiful Lake Jacomo has something for everyone. Jackson County Parks and Recreation Director, Michele Newman says, “Whatever activity you choose, our top-notch staff will ensure that you MAKE YOUR DAY in our Jackson County Parks.”

THE FOUNDATION4 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PREVENTION IS HOLDING ITS THIRD ANNUAL EVENT ON APRIL 7, THEMED HATS & HEELS. Do you have a dress, or a pair of jeans or perhaps shoes that make you feel confident when you wear them? That strength actually comes from deep within your heart and soul, and the clothing is just like wearing a Superman cape! That is the basic concept behind the Clothed in Confidence Fashion Show, a benefit for the amazing Foundation4DVP. This 2019 signature event is a fashion show with a twist, debuting the latest fashions from local Kansas City boutiques while educating attendees about domestic violence. Some of the models include domestic violence survivors who will share their stories with attendees, illuminating how domestic violence comes in many forms. In addition to the fashion show, attendees will also enjoy both a live and silent auction. Funds raised at Clothed in Confidence will support the development of a comprehensive program including easy-to-implement curriculum to teach students self-worth, identifying values, and skills to set boundaries with others. Foundation4DVP is working toward a world with significantly fewer incidents of domestic violence. Tracey Passantino, co-founder and CEO, had a specific reason for founding the group. She says, “On June 8, 2003, at 11:15 p.m. I got a phone call from my younger sister, Leslie. The condensed version of our conversation is that she told me her husband was in jail, she was on the couch with a loaded gun, and her kids were safe in bed. My nieces were 3 and 5 years old, and they had witnessed his abuse. The next morning, we grabbed as much as we could fit into two cars and left her home. My sister and nieces were in a shelter for two months, and the divorce process started. When she came out of shelter, she started a new life, free from the physical abuse, but far from free of the psychological damage from 18 years of emotional abuse.” In 2012, they decided they could no longer sit back and watch this social issue continue to grow. Domestic violence comes in many forms, be it physical and emotional abuse, financial control, intimidation or threats. This group seeks to create an educational model that is easy for educators to incorporate into their daily lesson plans and complies with state requirements for Social Emotional Learning (SEL). “We anticipate that we’ll have our first pilot with a fourth-grade class in Spring 2020. Behind the scenes, we are in the final stages of creating our development team, final discussions about collaborating with a local domestic violence shelter and working on the brand for the model with experts in graphics and storytelling,” Passantino says. “Many times, prevention is simply not possible because the abuse has already begun. This is why we care about reaching kids in fourth through eighth grades, hopefully before they experience abuse. “As humans we want to help others but as Midwesterners we don’t want to interfere if we suspect something is going on. You could risk losing a friendship by speaking up. Or you can keep quiet and wonder later, sometimes when a life has been lost, why you didn’t ask your friend, family member or co-worker the difficult questions.”

Ami Buccero, secretary and executive board member for the Foundation4DVP, says, “Domestic violence is a very tough subject and makes many people uncomfortable. Thankfully, and as most people are aware, we have many amazing resources for domestic violence survivors to go to in Kansas City for help. The pothole in the domestic violence spectrum is education. That’s where the Foundation4DVP steps in. Every board member is completely invested in educating today’s youth and assisting with the implementation of a curriculum at the elementary level. With successful events such as Clothed in Confidence, we will raise sufficient funds so we can successfully educate today’s youth, thereby significantly reducing the number of domestic violence cases in the world. ‘Elimination by Education.’” Foundation4 Domestic Violence Prevention is a 501(c)3 non-profit. Our mission is: by educating teens and pretype of domestic violence. Visit foundation4dvp.org for more information. Visit nnedv.org for red flags of abuse.

ERICA KRZYKOWSKI AND DESIGN ASSISTANT, ANGELA WEDEKIND ARE THE MASTERMINDS AND THE CREATIVE FORCES BEHIND PRAIRIE HOME DESIGNS. With their attention to detail, eye for innovative design and limitless creativity, this duo packs a powerful punch to transform any space. Principal designer Krzykowski makes it her personal mission to make each client’s space feel beautiful and reflect their unique and personal style. They are sharing two outdoor patio and front door looks with us to inspire us as we freshen up our outdoor living spaces this spring. "We chose to use the same sectional as the foundation to show how changing the small things can make a huge difference," explains Krzykowski.
Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | April 2019
Modern The first look is monochromatic and modern. Simple is best when creating this vibe. The key is to not use too many different colors, but layer in texture for an inviting atmosphere. They used black and white as their palette and added interest and coziness with the drapery panels, patterned rug, comfy pillows and a throw for chilly evenings. Adding an inviting chair to curl up with a book and including a tray for entertaining has this space ready for when the weather improves and neighbors come out, so we can all get reacquainted! The modern front door incorporates a runner layered with two mats to create interest. "Think creatively about what kind of rugs your front space might need," Krzykowski says. "A runner was used here because of the double doors, but you might want a 30x60 rug with an individual mat on it for a single entry door." Pro tip: When it comes to modern planters, bigger is better, so pick something that will fill your space well.

Bohemian The second look is colorful and Bohemian. Fun, vibrant colors and lots of woven items were used for this whimsical look. "We started with a tall egg chair as a statement piece to establish the look and added battery powered hanging lanterns for interest up high," Wedekind says. "Don't forget about the space above your head. It's a great place to make an impact." Bring the indoors out with this look. Think about what you would want inside your house and find a way to bring it out. Included here in this look are poufs for kids to sit on to play games, and an umbrella stand for guests who visit on rainy days. There is also a boot tray for days when the kids have been out playing in the mud. At the front door in this look, they include lots of color and pattern. The runner is a buffalo check, and the mats are floral to add interest. Layer here and be daring.

Split decisions common after a divorce trial Most parties want to settle their divorce amicably outside of court without a trial. For various reasons, some parties cannot reach a decision on every aspect of their divorce. Some parties might not even be able to reach an agreement on much of anything. Either way, this can result in a trial taking place. A trial is the only way to resolve a divorce where a complete settlement is not reached. When many think of the concept of a divorce trial, they can resort to mindset of thinking of winning or losing. The view is that one party wins and the other loses. They think of it much like an individual would think of a criminal case. In a criminal case, either the prosecution proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt and the defendant is found guilty. Or, in contrast, they do not prove their case and the defendant found innocent. If the defendant was found not guilty at trial, most would consider that a win for the defendant. On the other hand, if the defendant was found guilty, most could consider that a loss for the defendant.
The reality is a divorce trial is not this simple. There is not always a clear winner or loser. In fact, the results are split decisions in many cases. In other words, one party might feel as if they won in certain areas. Yet, they might feel like they lost in other areas. Take a client who might feel as if the property and debt division result was a win for them. On the other hand, they might feel like they lost on child custody, child support, spousal support and attorneys’ fees. A client in this situation might walk away very unhappy because they lost on four out of the five main categories of issues at trial. Of course, all these broad categories are broken down into very small parts in a divorce trial result. The family court judge has to decide what many would consider small details, like exchange locations, tax deductions for the children, who is covering health insurance, the summer schedule for the children, etc. The family court judge also has to decide the length of spousal maintenance, if it is ordered, and phase down amounts for child sup-
port as children are emancipated. They might have to decide lengths of time for certain items. Take where a party has to refinance the mortgage on the house. Is that to be done with 30days or 90-days? To some parties, these kinds of details might be huge for them. At the end of the day, a divorce trial result is unlike most other areas of the law. Some parties end up feeling fairly good about certain aspects of the result. Yet, they might feel terrible about other areas decided upon at trial. This is the reality of divorce law. It is also why many will tell you that almost nobody is completely happy after a divorce trial. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, mediation, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. DID YOU KNOW THAT IN 2016, WORLD PLASTIC PRODUCTION TOTALED AROUND 335 MILLION METRIC TONS, ACCORDING TO THE EARTH DAY NETWORK? Although you probably can’t singlehandedly change the environmental toll of the amount of plastic pollution that comes from that kind of number, here’s one way you can curb your consumption and do your part toward a healthier environment.

AS A LIFELONG LEE’S SUMMIT RESIDENT
I feel deeply connected to the
COMMUNITY
DID YOU KNOW?
I am a graduate of Lee's Summit
98% of my business comes from referral and repeat clients. I devote myself to serving the needs of my clients before, during and after each transaction. Because of the level of service I provide my clients, they in turn refer me to people of comparable quality to themselves, who may need the type of service I provide, and who would appreciate this same level of attention.
High School, and raised my family here. For over 18 years I have LOVED helping individuals and families make their dreams of home ownership come true. Lee's Summit has so much to offer with the cost of living, highly rated schools, but the history and the warm, welcoming people make it special. I can assist in both buying and selling transactions. Let me help you with your next move.
