My Family and I moved back to Lee’s Summit from the Indianapolis area about three years ago. We definitely experienced colder weather and a lot more snow during our time in Indianapolis. I’m one of the few people that actually enjoys cold weather, so I love this time of year. When we get those “lucky” snow days, they are filled with sledding, snowball fights, and of course a grilled cheese with tomato soup! WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN LEE’S SUMMIT?
Are you familiar with Andrew Zimmern, from the show Bizarre Foods? If you are, then that is how I’d describe my relationship with food. I love trying new foods, especially if the food has cultural significance. Lee’s Summit has so many great restaurants, but most recently topping my list are the ahi tuna poke tacos at Pearl Tavern. DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS IN 2019 THAT YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT?
We have three kids between the ages of five and 10, so there is some sort of excitement each day in our lives! This year for Christmas we gave an “experience” to each of our kids. These experiences include tickets to see the Harlem Globetrotters, Cirque du Soleil on Ice and cooking classes for our aspiring chef. Hopefully, we’ll also be able to make time for a third annual trip to Estes Park, CO to do some hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park.

individuality in our talents, thoughts and style is what makes us unique. When I think of the different professions or hobbies that the people in my life have, I can see the creativity, innovation or artistic expression that each person possesses that makes them successful and creative in their own way. One of my favorite things to do is to watch my kids go through creative processes. Sometimes it is quite literal by making up a new song on the piano, writing a story, or creating a work of art, but other times it is experiencing the gift of their imaginations while they play. One of my favorite things to watch is when my second son plays baseball in the backyard. He imagines an entire game and will throw the ball in the air to pretend he’s catching a fly ball and” throw” it in to home. He suddenly becomes the runner and slides in to home barely making it. He used to play like that all the time, but as he gets older, I see it less and less. I love watching his imagination at play, and it

ent players on the field, as I know to drink it in and appreciate it while it lasts. The creativity that we had when we were younger morphs into different versions as we become adults. Sometimes it seems to silence in some and comes alive in others. Oftentimes it is easy to see that creativity in children because their imaginations are so transparent as the play out loud. If we look around at the adults in our lives, we will see creative expression in so many things besides what typically is viewed as artistic.

ARTIST GARY WILKES HAS HIS PERSONAL FAVORITES. In his Lakewood home studio, an easel faces personal portraits of Bruce Springsteen and Keith Urban. But Lady Gaga holds a special place in his heart, too. When Gaga visited the Sprint Center for her “Joanne” world tour in November 2017, Wilkes was in his ninth year of painting the portraits of visiting artists for the concert venue. Through his job at Acme Sign, Wilkes had been contracted to paint Sprint artists’ portraits for three years. He’d well-surpassed that original time frame, and Gaga’s portrait was to be his last. As was their usual arrangement, his respected mentor at Acme, Greg Price, provided a photo, copy and type style for inspiration. Wilkes rendered Gaga’s concert poster in acrylic, the thick-textured and richly-hued paint lending a three-dimensional feel to the portrait. The artist, satisfied with his work, felt like at least he’d gone out with a bang. But then Wilkes got a call from his daughter, saying that Gaga had posed on Instagram with his portrait. And the Grammy-award-winning singer went out of her way to share how much she’d appreciated the portrait, so much that the Sprint Center decided to retain Wilkes to continue the portraits. “Lady Gaga saved my Sprint career,” he says. “The entire time I was painting these, I was thinking that this would be my last one,” he says. “I paint each one like it’s my first and my last.” Today, the walls of the Sprint Center suites and backstage are lined with nearly 300 of Wilkes’ portraits, signed by both the painter and the recording artists. While the Sprint Center houses the largest body of his work, the brick walls and billboards of Kansas City have been Wilkes’ canvas since the late ‘70s. After high school, Wilkes took a job on the grounds crew at Kauffman Stadium. He was watering the grass when CONTINUED >

he saw a man painting a billboard in the outfield. He remembers it was an ad for Camel Cigarettes of a man scaling a mountain. “I said that’s what I want to do, that’s what I want to be,” Wilkes says. Wilkes got a job with Calvin Signs doing hand-lettering and mural work. Later, he interviewed at Gannett. His “interview” was to stay overnight and hand-paint a billboard. After he worked at Gannett for eight years, the paint shop closed as billboard ads increasingly became digital prints stretched across vinyl sheets. Wilkes moved to Acme Signs, where he painted murals and billboards and did commercial sculpture work for 24 years before his retirement in the summer of 2018. Now sleeping in is a perk, but “retirement” represents more of a shift than a cease of creativity for Wilkes. He sketches and paints every day alongside a hand-carved carousel horse at his home studio. Paintings by Norman Rockwell and John Singer Sargent are displayed nearby on a wall-length easel. Like the artists who inspire his work, Wilkes’ goal is to tell a story. His creative process begins with a photo. Sometimes it’s one captured by his wife, Rhonda, an artist in her own right who Wilkes describes as his second set of eyes. He’ll sketch the lines of the photo onto his canvas. Then comes the paint. Acrylic is blessedly forgiving. If Wilkes isn’t satisfied with part of the painting, he moves to a different part of the painting to work, then returns to the original area once it’s dried to make any changes. Each painting is typically five to six layers. 22

Wilkes describes his style as realistic impressionism. He diverges from clean lines with a splash of orange here, a tick of white there. Broad brushstrokes in the background create an abstract, bokeh-like effect. “When you walk up to a painting, and it hits you and you don’t know why, it stirs an emotion, then I’ve done my job,” Wilkes says. first career, but it’s become a passion he’s carrying through into a second career as an independent artist. Wilkes’ figurative pieces are now on display at Kansas City-area galleries such as Leawood Fine Art Gallery. “I always keep an open mind,” he says. “I’ll always be learning. That’s the fun of it.”

in March last year, what also emerged was a new Cultural Arts Division. A large part of what I do is support efforts of the Lee’s Summit Arts Council,” she says. “Plus, the advantage of having a dedicated agency within our local government means the conversation about how arts can shape the vibrancy of our community can now be coordinated among a wide variety of stakeholders, from elected officials and city staff to community groups, artists and citizens.”

Green St. ARTIST: Dave Eames Commissioned to commemorate the 150th celebration of Lee’s Summit, Emergence was the creation of local artist Dave Eames. The metal sculpture serves as both public art and a time capsule, set to be opened in 2065. The sculpture is comprised of steel and glass elements and has the appearance of crystals as they are mined from beneath the earth. At night, glass panels near the top of each crystal spire illuminates with colorful fiber optic lights. The lights rotate through a variety of colors. The time capsule is hidden within the structure, keeping it safe from weather. “The design concept was influenced from the natural beauty and upward direction of quartz crystals,” Eames says. “I wanted the steel crystal forms to rise out of the landscape. Red Mural Downtown Lee’s Summit, Old Dayton Hotel. 9 SE 3rd St. in the alley. ARTIST: JT Daniels This privately commissioned mural is located in the alley of the old Dayton Hotel in Downtown Lee’s Summit. While not Lee’s Summit’s only mural, it is the most impressive and iconic, spanning the entire wall of the historic building. Realizing the opportunity for future murals throughout the community, the city worked with local business owners and Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street to develop a mural ordinance. Adopted in 2016 the ordinance helps guide the commissioning of the city’s murals both privately and publicly owned. The mural has become a focal point for Downtown Lee’s Summit as people stop and take selfies against the wall. Local photographers have found it to be a unique backdrop for engagement, wedding and senior photos. JT Daniels uses his art to support and uplift the community. His murals can be seen all over Kansas City, adorning walls of small businesses, street car stops, galleries and local neighborhoods. His work weaves together various elements, such as characters and phrases, into streamlined designs that represent the heartbeat of the urban community. “JT Daniels and I collaborated together on ideas and landed on the lovely urban redhead I call Red, a perfect example of how an investment in public art outweighs the cost,” says Ben Rao, president, Bridge Space. “When I decided to do the mural project, I wanted to create energy, activity and a place for people to do selfies knowing that they would be tagged as Lee's Summit. I believe if we create more public art, we can create a destination to attract people who want to experience and share art and boost spending in shops and restaurants. The more art we have, the cooler or groovier we become and the more people we attract.”

Kids at Heart Downtown Lee’s Summit near 3rd St. and Douglas ARTIST: Kwan Wu Installed January 2009 Kids at Heart is Lee’s Summit’s first permanent sculptural public art installation. The bronze sculpture was commissioned as part of the redevelopment of downtown. The statue depicts a youthful boy and girl standing while a playful little boy, having fallen on his back, chases after a high-jumping frog. The statues are perched in the middle of a fountain with bronze fish jumping from the waters to form a heart. Artist Kwan Wu is a Chinese-American sculptor who is ranked among the top sculptors in the world and is nationally known for his bronze statues. His works have been installed at the White House, and his life-sized bronze statue of baseball player George Brett is at Kauffman Stadium. He lives in the Kansas City area with family. During redevelopment of Downtown Lee’s Summit, the contractor for the project, FPC Development Construction, commissioned Wu to create the sculpture. A public/private venture, installation was made possible through a public art easement agreement between the city of Lee’s Summit and Hartley Furniture and Appliance, Inc., allowing it to be located on private property while still visible and accessible to the public. Acquiring the sculpture was a community effort as funding was raised from local businesses and individuals. The city also supported the project through the Downtown Art Fund, a temporary fund established to support the installation of permanent and temporary public art.

The multidisciplinary heart center team offers many super subspecialty clinics like electrophysiology, heart failure and transplant, preventive cardiology and many more. These subspecialty clinics continue to grow. In less than four years, the area’s only pediatric heart transplant program has performed 18 heart transplants. “We were very proud to be able to bring pediatric heart transplant to the region. The Heart Transplant Program provides care for children who have no other medical or surgical options to fix a failing heart without serious risk,” Bender says. Children with heart conditions often need complex care and close monitoring, which used to mean a long hospital stay was inevitable. By developing the Cardiac High Acuity Monitoring Program (CHAMP) app, Children’s Mercy is leading the industry in groundbreaking technology to allow real-time home monitoring. Because of the success of CHAMP, Children’s Mercy is now sharing this technology with other pediatric cardiology programs across the nation. + The Thrive Program was launched in 2016 to provide comprehensive support for patients and families navigating the overwhelming emotions and complexities of coping with a heart condition. AS WWII WAS COMING TO AN END IN 1945, MIKE DRENON AND HIS, WIFE, PANSY, OPENED THEIR FIRST JEWELRY STORE. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention, and a broken watch he could not afford to fix inspired him to teach himself the craft. He went on to learn everything there was to know about watchmaking and decided to open his own shop. Their first location was in a strip center on 24 Highway in Fairmount, IN. Because they had a tight budget, Mike built his own showcases in his living room. Without a safe, he brought the jewelry back and forth to the shop in a shoebox. Their only daughter, Karen, took over the business in 1978, along with her husband, Frankie. They moved to a second location on Lee’s Summit Road in 1999, where they continued to grow. The current owner, Steve Frisch, is a third-generation Drenon. He and his wife, Cheryl, have owned the store since 2009. Steve started in the business at age 7 and knew from then that this is what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He attended Texas Jewelry Institute where he learned to be a bench jeweler. After many years on the bench, it became clear that Steve’s true talent was in sales. He has grown Drenon exponentially since 2009. “Under his leadership, we were recently able to move to our new 8,000-square-foot store and add many highly desired designer brands, giving us one of the largest inventories in the Midwest,” says Savanna Frisch, fourth generation Drenon and a sales associate. As times have changed, so has the jewelry business. For example, when a customer comes in to purchase an engagement ring, the photo of the desired ring is often on the customer’s phone. Steve discovered that 95 percent of engagement rings are made in China, so he set out to master the art of custom design. Instead of sending the rings out to be made, they custom-design the rings 100 percent in-house within seven to 10 days. “We are not merchants, we are craftsmen,” Steve says. “There are thousands of jewelry stores in the United States, but less than 5 percent of them have the capability to do what we do. Anyone can sell you a ring out of a case, but it takes years of expertise and state-of-the-art equipment to make the one-of-a-kind ring of your dreams. We've invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into this concept because we believe so strongly in it.” Steve states that their shop is three times larger than average and has cutting-edge equipment: “Our state-of-the-art shop is totally glassed in, so you can watch our jewelers design on the computer, print waxes from the 3D printer and even cast at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.”

The custom design process starts with a simple conversation with the customer. “We can look for inspiration on the internet or around the store,” he says. “Once we get an idea of what the customer is looking for, our jeweler will take it to the CAD and create a digital image, which the customer will approve before proceeding. From there, it goes to the 3D printer, which will give the customer the opportunity to touch and feel the piece in wax form to ensure it's exactly what they had in mind. Finally, it moves into casting. Because our shop is glassed in, our customers now have the opportunity to watch their piece be casted. When the piece is completed, everyone feels as if they were truly a part of creating it, making it even more special.” Drenon Jewelers employs four graduates of the most prestigious school for jewelers – the Texas Jewelry Institute in Paris, Texas. With Valentine’s Day upon us, Drenon is once again continuing its 35-year tradition of sending out keys to customers. They bring in their key and see if it will open their treasure chest. The chest holds prizes worth thousands of dollars. “We had a lady win a $10,000 Rolex a couple of years ago!” Savanna says. “Our customers look forward to participating every year while they stop in to buy their Valentine’s Day gift. Valentine’s Day isn’t just about chocolate and flowers anymore. Many of our customers put as much thought and money into a Valentine present as they do a Christmas or birthday present. With one of the largest inventories in the area, we have items starting at $50 and going up to $700,000. We take pride in having something to accommodate every budget.” With most of its business coming from word-of-mouth referrals, the team at Drenon takes pride in each diamond they mount and each smile they see. And satisfying generations of loyal customers. In a world where the internet is demolishing brick and mortar retailers, they feel blessed to still be growing. For the last decade, an average of 1,000 independently owned jewelry stores close every year, yet Drenon continues to thrive and has more than doubled its inventory and showroom. “We know there are a lot of variables to our success, but we truly believe a large part of it is because we offer something that no one else in Kansas City does,” Savanna says.

The false mindset of fixing it later Individuals facing a divorce or family law matter are often faced with difficult decisions. Their spouse (or the other party to the family law case) may have an attorney. They indicate that their attorney is simply going to draw up the paperwork to conclude the case quick. When faced with this, many decide not to get a lawyer. Their mindset is that although the settlement paperwork is flawed in many respects, they can simply go back and fix it later. In other words, the view of some is that they should simply agree to the settlement that is being proposed. That will make the divorce or family matter end. After the case is done, many think they will just come back later and fix what was wrong with the original agreement. For example, if there are children, and a prior child custody or support order, they figure that they will just modify it later. This strategy is based on an incremental view that you can simply bite off certain parts of the case (like getting divorced) and then later deal with the other issues in the future. Often, this approach is based on saving
attorney fees or keeping things civil with their soon-to-be ex-spouse (or the other party). The problem is that modifying a prior court order is not simple or easy. It can be harder to fix something that was not right to begin with than to simply make sure it was fair and just from the start. This is because to modify a prior court order as to custody or support, a party typically has to show a change of circumstances of a substantial and continuing basis. In other words, one cannot come back to court with the incremental argument that they agreed to what they originally agreed to just to get the case done, but that it was not really right from the start. In most courts, this argument will not work. A party has to show that something is now different. They have to show that the difference is something significant and continuing. For many parties, this can be a tough standard to meet in court. This means that many parties who simply agree to a bad deal to get it done may end up facing a few problematic situations: • One, it might be that they end up being stuck with it and are never able to fix the bad parts of the original judgment
or order. Two, even if a party is successful in obtaining a modification, many spend a lot more money in the long run on attorney’s fees trying to obtain a modification than if they simply had it done right from the start. • Three, in terms of property and debt division in a divorce, this is almost always non-modifiable (meaning the you cannot come back to court later to change the original settlement). This is why parties who have a mindset that they are going to fix the bad parts of their divorce or family law settlement later are often missing the mark. It is almost always vital to make sure everything is correct from the start. FOR MANY, MUSIC IS A PART OF THEIR IDENTITY. It illustrates who they are, adds meaning to what they are doing, and personifies everyday monotony. Music is the whimsy of the piccolo, the urgency of the trumpet, and the serenity of the violin. For Lucas Bingham, the versatility of the guitar is as central a part of his life as instruments are to music. In talking about the beginning of his musical journey, Lucas Bingham chuckles as he credits his lack of enthusiasm for fourth grade study hall. When given the option of participating in strings he saw it as an easy trade-off, and although there were not a lot of musicians in his family, he studied violin through high school. It was not until Bingham was introduced to the acoustic guitar at age 13 while attending Boy Scout camp that he found his true musical passion. He left camp full of guitar curiosity and decided to save his own money to buy his own. He studied obsessively, practiced incessantly, secured a musical mentor, and started to play gigs in high school. While studying mechanical engineering in college, a major he deemed practical, he continued to play and also joined a band. Upon his 2004 graduation from K-State he chose to pursue music full-time, playing in various bands and eventually adding vocalist to his musical repertoire. In 2008, he released his first album, “Clean Sheets,” on Pandora and Spotify.

Bingham had no grandiose plans for fame and stardom — he simply wanted to share his love of music. He began teaching five days a week at Music House and continued to gig at night. He transitioned to manager of the school, then director, and also wrote curriculum. He had discovered a new love for music in teaching the next generation, and his admiration for Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix fueled his desire to create a program with a “School of Rock” vibe. But as much as Bingham is dedicated to music, the same is true for his family. After marrying and expanding his family he decided to put his engineering degree to use and entered the business world. However, this did not stop him from continuing to follow his euphonious aspirations.

Although he continued to play solo once a month, he wanted to get back to playing in a group. Along Bingham’s journey he had met many musicians, and one evening he invited guitarists James Lake and Andy Launder to join him. They played four songs together and formed an instant connection. KC Guitar Trio was birthed — a group Bingham describes as an acoustic rock experience. They use a lot of effects: distortion pedals, wah pedals, octave pedals, harmonicas, and mandolins, and they innovatively arrange everything by dividing up the parts of rhythm, bassline, and melody. This ensures they create a well-developed song with a lot depth to it. They jam out every third Friday at the Canoe Club at Lake Lotawana. In true workaholic fashion Bingham continues to teach and has also started teaching online, writing his own curriculum, and uploading lessons to YouTube. What makes his online classes unique is that he uses karate style colored bracelets that students can earn through practicing, performing, and connecting with other people. His hope is that a tangible motivator will encourage students not to flame out because they will be able to see their progression. To date, Bingham has impacted over 1,000 students by purely doing what he loves: playing guitar. “My 10-year plan is to make music my full-time job — performing, teaching, and developing curriculum - in a way that can support my family,” Bingham says. “My goal and my desire is to disrupt what is out there, to revolutionize and turn music education into something bigger.” February 2019 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

WITH THE START OF THE NEW YEAR I ALWAYS LOVE TO TAKE A PAUSE AND COME UP WITH A LIST OF DREAMS AND GOALS TO HELP GUIDE ME IN THE MONTHS TO FOLLOW. 2019 is no exception, and this year is going to be great! Later in the year we are adding a daughter-in-law to the family which is so exciting, but before that happens there are some business goals to get to. My main photography focus will be lifestyle portrait photography including seniors and families. I particularly enjoy staging shoots and finding the perfect location and props to make the shoot fit the desired style. When not behind the camera, I can be found spending time with family, designing my home, redoing our barn and traveling. We are off to a great start! 50
