they place a high priority on visiting extended family and that they have created bonds with cousins that I know from personal experience will be cherished, lifelong friends. Some of my favorite childhood memories involve spending summer weekends with cousins. Sometimes it was a simple sleepover where we would spend the majority of our time coming up with performances of all kinds to present to anyone willing to watch, and other times it was a weekend spent at our family lake cabin (which "cabin" is a generous word to use). Our lake weekends were filled with rafting and swimming, playing volleyball and croquet, going on walks or driving into town for ice cream, and sitting around a campfire at night, telling stories or sharing embarrassing moments. Those lake weekend memories are among my most favorite life moments.

Our Lady of the Presentation's 30th Annual Auction On April 28th, 2018 - 370 people gathered to celebrate Our Lady of the Presentation's 30th annual auction. They were "Kickin' It Old School" with big hair, neon, wrestlers, and more! SMA STUDENTS TO ATTEND THE MISSOURI SCHOLARS ACADEMY Two students from St. Michael the Archangel, Justin House and Daniel Rogge, have been selected to attend the 33rd Missouri Scholars Academy. The Academy is a three-week academic residential program for 330 of Missouri’s gifted students who are ready to begin their junior year in high school. The Academy is held each year in June on the campus of the University of Missouri and administered by the University of Missouri Honors College. Acceptance is based on student essays, PSAT scores, teacher recommendations and IQ tests.
SCA THEATRE BRINGS HOME CAPPIE AWARDS FOR BEST ACTOR AND ENSEMBLE Summit Christian Academy is pleased to announce that several outstanding SCA actors were recognized for their performance in Sherlock Holmes and the First Baker Street Irregular in the Best Actor and Best Ensemble in a Play categories at the annual Kansas City Cappies Award Gala. The Best Ensemble in a Play award was given to freshmen Aidan Lahey, Mackenzie Madsen, Collin Pemberton, and Annie Harsch; sophomore Irie Kudrin; and junior Jennah Finnegan. SCA junior John Davis was awarded Best Actor in a Play for his performance as detective Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes and the First Baker Street Irregular.

WHO HASN’T SEEN THAT RED CABOOSE IN THE CENTER OF LEE’S SUMMIT? Downtown Lee’s Summit is home to dance parties, food, fun and community, and this red caboose, which is housed next to the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce office, is a staple. Steve DeRousse and his company, Major Painting, painted it that bright red. “We are a member of the Chamber, and were contacted by the Chamber to bid the downtown caboose before one of their big events this spring. We presented a bid, but this project was different,” he says. “Being a long-time resident and painting contractor from Lee’s Summit, the train means a little more to us, and therefore we wanted to do something special. We decided to help get this project done by donating half the labor it would take to complete the train’s transformation and PPG, our paint supplier, was even gracious enough to donate the coatings needed to execute the project.” Steve funded his accounting degree in the 1980s at UMKC by painting houses. As a youngster, he had a neighborhood lawn mowing company. One summer, he painted his family’s home for his father. A neighbor saw the craftsmanship and attention to detail he showed and hired him to paint his house. Word spread, and his painting started to become a business. He founded Major Painting in 1988. They are now focused on commercial and residential customers, including Price Choppers, CBRE, Block Real Estate, Central Bank of the West, US Bank and Kauffman Foundations are just a few of the many commercial clients across the entire state of Missouri and Eastern Kansas.

“We treat our customers and employees the way we want to be treated and are proud to have numerous employees who have been with us 10 years, and one with us for 20, which is unheard of in our industry,” he says. “We also have customers we have worked with for over 20 years. Years ago, I was told by a customer, ‘you can tell the character of a business owner by the way his employees treat the customer.’ I took that to heart and make every effort to ensure we have happy employees who represent our company well with great customer service. We are also very proud to be one of just a few painting contractors with a commercial office location allowing our customers complete access to our company.” Steve, his wife, Tammy, and their four sons live in Lee’s Summit and are involved in the community. He puts Major Painting to work on behalf of our community by sponsoring the Lee’s Summit Baseball Association. They also support the Ali Kemp T.A.K.E. Foundation and Kansas City Hospice. “My oldest son, Chase, graduated from the University of Missouri three years ago and was anxious to join the family business in June of 2015,” he says. “He brought a lot of energy with him and really ramped up the marketing resulting in double-digit growth every year since. We also have expanded our services to more general construction services and do bathroom and kitchen remodels for Lee’s Summit homeowners, as well as commercial tenant finish projects.” Tammy works part-time helping clients with interior design and picking finishes for bathroom and kitchen remodels. He believes one of the best things about his business is the ability to improve his customers’ homes and workplaces. “A painting project allows the consumer to see an immediate return on their investment. Thirty years later I am still amazed at how a coat of paint can change your surroundings," he says.

THE FAMILY LEGACY OF MILITARY SERVICE MAY HAVE BEEN THE INITIAL SPARK THAT INSPIRED RETIRED LT. Col. Paul Amey to launch his military career. But he was the very first in his family to ever earn his aviation “Wings of Gold.” It was in his sophomore year of college at Benedictine College when Paul came to terms with the reality that his football scholarship wouldn't lead to a career in the NFL. When Paul's father prompted him to consider military service, his father’s own service as a Marine in WWII lent him credibility for such a recommendation. Paul earned his stripes during his 9-year active duty service as a pilot in the U.S. Navy. He then switched to his hometown Air Force Reserve Unit known as the “KC Hawgs” flying the A-10 Warthog in 2000. Now a commercial airline pilot and instructor for United Airlines, Paul's roots in military flight remain deep and influential. When he isn’t flying over Munich and Dublin in a Boeing 777, he performs flyovers at local high school football games. 36

The team Paul flies with, KC Flight, is a local all-volunteer civilian formation team. It comprises a group of both civilian and retired military pilots who like an opportunity to scratch their itch. But more importantly, Paul and pilots like him recognize that lending an emotional impact at public events also serves a greater purpose. Performing flyovers at Kansas City’s Memorial Day Celebration at the Station not only helps him relive the days of flying in his old squadron, but it may also inspire young, future pilots on the ground and bring a sense of unity to the Midwest community. “There is a sense of that same kind of comradery I had in the military when you’re formation flying,” he says. Prior to this, Paul served in the Air Force reserves for three years while attending college. Those years were the ones that divided him from other ambitious cadets looking to earn their wings. In January 1986, Paul attended his first Air Force Reserves drill period where he interacted with a handful of A10-Warthog pilots. It was the interaction with these pilots that inspired his career decision. The idea of flying fighters and protecting troops on the ground with life-saving ground cover was all he needed to begin his journey. “I knew right then that this is what I wanted to do,” Paul says. “I need to be active; I can’t really be myself if I am wearing a suit and tie and sitting in an office. I knew this was the right move for me.” Paul started financing his way by throwing boxes for UPS while attending classes in the afternoon. Once he started flying, Paul abandoned his football career, dropped out of Benedictine College and sniffed out an FAA-approved civilian aviation training program. It just so happens there was an excellent one down the street at the University of Central Missouri. During his senior year at UCM, Paul was selected into the highly competitive Naval Aviation Cadet Program. This program, unlike others which required bachelor degrees from its candidates, sought out students who had no college degree but at least 60 college credits. While being the exact type of program Paul needed to earn his wings, it did not come without a cost. “You couldn’t be married or have any dependents, and you were required to live on base,” Paul says. “You earned half of an Ensign’s pay for the duration of the training, but you didn’t actually have any rank. You would not be a commissioned officer until you earned your wings. There were all these restrictions.” The stakes were high for Paul; if he or other cadets washed out of flight school, they owed the U.S. Navy two years of "swabbing decks." But Paul was willing to risk it all for the opportunity to fly fighters. Thus he was released by his Air Force Reserve unit and dropped out of UCM his senior year to join the U.S Navy. Before he went to Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, Paul struck a deal with Dr. John Horine who was the director of the aviation department at UCM. If Paul completed naval flight school and got his Wings of Gold, which could take up to two years, Dr. Horine would grant him his degree. CONTINUED >

Despite the fact that Paul was still 12 credits shy from a bachelor’s degree when he completed flight school on Dec 1,8 1990, Dr. Horine stayed true to his promise. “I was commissioned as an officer, earned my wings, and received my degree all on that same day,” Paul says. “And 10 days later I married the love of my life.” Paul says his most valuable take-away from his military service was exemplified in his six deployments, five of which were to Iraq and Afghanistan. Being one of the very first reserve air units into Iraq after the regime change in 2003, Paul quickly learned how to put political opinions and personal feelings aside when it meant protecting troops on the ground. His discipline in compartmentalization is what helped bring numerous men and women home to their families. And this same sense of duty colors Paul’s approach to work and family to this day.

It’s estimated that as many as 20 percent of military veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. At the same time, millions of shelter animals await their forever home. The Kansas City chapter of one national organization, Pets for Vets, seeks to build a bridge, matching veterans with local shelter animals. Avery Shahandeh of Lee’s Summit founded the Kansas City chapter of Pets for Vets in April 2015. Her husband is a veteran, and she has a personal passion for helping shelter animals. “We knew there was a growing concern for returning veterans in our country, and we wanted to let them know they weren’t forgotten,” Avery says. “We also knew that dogs in shelters in the area needed attention and could help provide a healing connection to these veterans.” Pets for Vets-Kansas City serves veterans in Cass, Clay, Jackson and Lafayette counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. The organization partners with local shelters including KC Pet Project, Wayside Waifs and Great Plains SPCA. First, veterans must complete an online application. Then, local volunteers reach out to veteran applicants to get to know them better, beginning the unique “Super Bond” process. This process involves interviewing the veteran and then the pet to find an animal match whose personality and temperament best suits the needs of the veteran. Once the carefully informed selection has been made, the pet spends time with a professional trainer who uses positive reinforcement to teach good

manners, basic obedience and other valuable skills. Training may also include becoming comfortable with specific physical needs as well as recognizing panic or anxiety disorder behaviors. When companion animals meet their new owners, the connection is strong thanks to the Super Bond process. The pet is able to fit seamlessly into the life of its new owner. Staff Sergeant Gwen LaViolet retired from the Air Force in February 2004. She was apprehensive to get a new pet upon her return from Iraq because the loss of her first dog was difficult, and she suffered from PTSD and depression. But when she was matched with her dog, Auggie, through Pets for Vets-Kansas City, she says the bond was immediate. “He loves to run and play, which has gotten me out of the house more in the last month than in the past two or three years,” Gwen says. “Auggie gives meaning to my life again.” Avery says she’s witnessed firsthand the impact that a companion animal can have in the life of a veteran as well. “It’s really amazing to watch them interact and feel like they’re in a safe place because of their pet,” she says.
