I served on active duty with the Army from 2008-2011 and in the Reserves until 2016. While on active duty I worked as a Patriot Missile Operator and was a Combat Engineer in the Reserves. WHERE DID YOU SERVE DURING YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY?
While on active duty, I was stationed in Fort Bragg, NC and was deployed to Bahrain from 2009-2010. My reserve unit was at Richards Gebaur airport in Kansas City. WHAT IMPORTANT LIFE LESSON DID YOU LEARN FROM SERVING?

I served in the Marine Corps as a planning specialist. I planned the movements of Marines for deployments and war gamed future combat operation plans. I also guarded our US Embassies in Belgrade, Serbia and Tokyo, Japan. WHERE DID YOU SERVE DURING YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY?

ALWAYS THE SAME. In a world where there is so much divisiveness and negativity, I have the great privilege of being a part of sharing truly remarkable stories of people in our community that serve, love and overcome adversity. There are so many people in our community that desire to give of themselves without hesitation and continually serve in various ways. The privilege of having a platform to share the beauty of the good things that people in our city are doing is something I don’t take for granted. From young teens, to busy parents, to working professionals to retired adults, I see a common thread among them all, and it is the desire to show love and compassion to those in need. Our Thanksgiving issue is dedicated to gratefulness and giving back. I would be remiss to not share with you how much those two words define my dear friend and publisher of Lee’s Summit Lifestyle, Laura Paskciewicz. Anyone who knows Laura knows this to be true. She is a natural encourager and constantly builds people up and calls out greatness in them. She looks for the good in everyone and is a constant source of verbal affirmation and acts of kindness and generosity. From day one of working with Laura, she has showered praises and unwavering support to our team and goes out of her way to show appreciation to everyone around her without hesitation. She exemplifies this theme of gratefulness and giving back to me because it is simply who she is, and she inspires me to be a better person by simply being around her. In this issue we are sharing stories of people who give of themselves, and we also wanted to share stories of people in our community who have gone through great adversity but have come out looking for the good. bly unique and amazing light fixtures that have been enhancing homes, offices and many other environments for years. Unlike
many
great
artists, it was not the result of being born with
a rare talent that brought Larry to the place he is today. Rather he discovered his gift while fighting through the pain of an extremely rare disease that robbed him of his son Tyler at the age of 23. During his freshman year of high school Tyler was diagnosed with Leigh’s Syndrome. He had been dealing with symptoms from the time he was 6 years old. Tyler was full of life and had a passion for sports, so he did all he could to not let this challenge set him back. The Joneses found strength in their love for each other to carry on and fight this disease to the very end, and Tyler himself was determined to turn his trial into a triumph. Tyler graduated high school in 1994 from Arch Bishop O’Hara High School, now St. Michael the Archangel in Lee’s Summit. Tyler loved watching his siblings play sports, and he especially loved traveling and watching his brother, Trent, and sister, Tessa, play volleyball and basketball. As the years went on, the physical challenges grew more intense, which perhaps in many ways unseen at the time made the Jones family even stronger. Though he did all he could do to fight the deadly disease, Tyler passed away in December of 1998. He was finally set free. Despite all of the pain and heartache Larry and his wife, Teresa, were going through, they were determined to honor Tyler’s memory by finding a way to help and inspire others. This led them to start the Tyler Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarships are awarded annually to graduating seniors with a GPA of 2.5 or above. The Joneses set this standard because they wanted to help the kids who perhaps need the most help. Each applicant for the scholarship must submit a written essay and have a minimum of CONTINUED >

three recommendations from teachers stating why they are deserving of the scholarship. Since Tyler’s death, the memorial fund in his name has awarded scholarships to approximately 25 students who are determined to work hard,

live life to the fullest, and overcome the obstacles in front of them. Not only did Larry and Teresa determine in their hearts that they were going to help others through the scholarship fund, Teresa even began volunteering her time at Children’s Mercy Hospital. She has donated her time in the oncology and NICU departments for 18 years. For both Larry and Teresa, giving back to others was a way they could find their own healing from the pain they went through with Tyler’s illness and his passing. Larry hopes to inspire others by encouraging every person to find the creativity that is within them. He considers himself to have been born with very little artistic or creative ability. He laughs as he recalls his years in sales where he was limited to drawing stick figures on overhead projectors to illustrate his point. As he was approaching retirement, his wife commented that they were going to have to find a way to keep Tyler’s memorial scholarship fund going. There simply had to be a way to

generate another source of income. It was with this in mind that Larry discovered his hidden talent of steampunk and repurposed lighting. Steampunk is an inspired, artistic creativity that typically reflects Victorian England or America’s Wild West, combined with modern technologies. As he searched through ideas he found on Etsy and Pinterest, and he began experimenting, Lights On Mason was born. Larry will be featured on the HGTV show “Bargain Mansions” in November.

He has so much fun creating and making the lights, and it certainly keeps him busy in his retirement. Lights On Mason is not only inspiring Larry to carry on Tyler’s legacy of strength, he hopes his lighting creations will inspire others to live strong and find ways to turn trials into triumphs.

IT IS INTERESTING. When I reflect on my life, I would have never seen myself as this person. Beauty can be shocking. It can be breathtaking and mysterious. It can stir things inside a person that have her questioning the standard. Because there is no standard. When true beauty presents itself there is so much more than what is seen. It is layered, complex, and more than likely scarred. Beauty is not simple. Hanno Riak is beauty. Everyone has a story, but rarely do people take time to discover what that is. Often it is the visual that is used to tell that story. For Hanno Riak it was this mindset that plagued her. Coming to America from Sudan at the age of 6, Riak became acutely aware that she did not look like, nor was she like, her midwestern peers. She knew little English, and at a time when third-graders were learning how to jump rope and ride bikes, she was learning how to cook and take care of babies. It was a part of her culture that further exemplified how different America was from Sudan. In school, she felt the sting of CONTINUED >

isolation which was only heightened by teachers who recommend she “stay inside for recess since none of the other children want to play with you.” She was the student no one choose for the sports team, and the student who had to be the teacher’s partner. Adversity quickly became her way of life. She learned, with the help of her brother, how to prep for the grim reality that she was simply a complexion to some people. He would make fun of her skin tone, so she could become comfortable with the fact that others may do the same but that their intentions were not coming from a place of love. It was through this process she learned how to laugh about it. Despite events that would cause some to shun education, Riak went to college in South Dakota in efforts to discover her purpose. She had proven herself to be a stellar scholar and was also awarded a volleyball scholarship. Even with lofty majors of pre-med and biology, she was again faced with people who could not see past her appearance. At one point she was required to write her essays in class because an educator did not believe she was capable of doing it on her own. This experience (combined with equally horrible ones) led her back to Kansas City.

Elizabeth Green, neonatal nurse practitioner at St. Luke’s East, is married with three active children ages 6 to 12. She’s also working a 24-hour shift on Christmas this year. Providing intensive care for other people’s babies while being flexible to celebrate with her own family is part of the job, and a loving sacrifice she makes each holiday. “As hard as it is to leave our families during the holidays, when we come to work and are given the privilege to care for sweet babies, it really is the best feeling,” Green says. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF SERVING THE COMMUNITY? “The best part of my job is helping to care for the babies and their families and help them through some of the worst and best days of their lives. Sometimes just listening and providing some perspective to our parents is our greatest gift. Whenever I see a past patient thriving out in the community, I know we had a part in that, and it feels wonderful.” DO YOU DO ANYTHING SPECIAL AT WORK ON HOLIDAYS? “In every hospital I’ve worked in over the holidays, we try to have fun and celebrate when we can. Many people bring fun treats and food in, and we can gather when able and eat together in some way. The hospital provides a holiday dinner for staff and families. That helps add a festive mood, too.” WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR FAMILY TO CELEBRATE THESE HOLIDAYS AROUND YOUR WORK SCHEDULE? “My extended family has always worked around my schedule when able. My husband and I try as much as possible to keep my kids’ holidays unaffected by my work schedule; however, that is easier said than done. We may wake up earlier on Christmas morning (which they never complain about). Or, Santa may

But as the daughter of a nurse, Huerter grew up accustomed to Christmas or Thanksgiving always being on a different day. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF SERVING THE COMMUNITY? “I love taking care of people, and my passion is ER nursing. Being a nurse in the ED at Lee’s Summit Medical Center is very rewarding. Every day is different. We serve the community healthcare that’s genuine and compassionate. Twelvehour shifts on your feet, and skipped lunches and breaks can be difficult, but at the end of the day, knowing the life we saved or the patient we made feel better makes it all worth it.” DO YOU DO ANYTHING SPECIAL AT WORK ON HOLIDAYS? “Holidays in the emergency department are usually very busy, so our tradition is to bring a potluck. The way I look at it is as long as I have a day with my family together, it doesn’t matter what day it is! Christmas can be two days before! Unfortunately, in our line of work, we don't always hear about the good, so when a citizen calls or stops by to thank us for our service, it means the world to us. Each year around the holiday season, community members deliver meals, treats and small tokens of appreciation. We’re truly blessed to have so many people show their appreciation for the work we do and for the sacrifices we make to serve the community.” DO YOU DO ANYTHING SPECIAL AT WORK ON HOLIDAYS? “In the Communications Unit, we hold an annual ‘Secret Santa’ gift exchange around the holiday season. In the past, we've filled a stocking up with goodies and passed it around among our co-workers. “I’M PREGNANT.” Those words can be the most joyous or the most uncertain depending on a woman’s life circumstances. What is her age? How is her relationship with the baby’s father? Do they feel prepared and are they ready? Those are some of the questions that can be answered at Rachel House Pregnancy Centers (Rachel House). Kathy Edwards, CEO, explains the mission’s purpose. “It all began in 1992 when The LightHouse maternity home opened a small help center in Blue Springs, Missouri. That first year, 78 women were seen for free pregnancy tests, material needs assistance, and referrals for community assistance. The mission then and now is to help parents choose to parent their children successfully or lovingly place them for adoption. We offer a wide variety of services that help us demonstrate the unconditional love of God to everyone who walks through our doors. Since 1992 we have grown from that original small location into four busy centers serving approximately 3,000 women and nearly 500 men each year - all of these walking through the uncertainty of an unplanned pregnancy. We have locations in Lee’s Summit, Independence, the Northland and Midtown in Kansas City, Missouri.” This amazing organization provides pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, prenatal and parenting classes, individual case management services and community referrals. All services are free to those served. 36

Because of those personal experiences, we truly have our clients' best interests at heart.” Rachel House is a place where scared and confused individuals find a listening ear, practical support and genuine care. By the time men and women graduate from their program (pregnancy through baby’s first year), many say they don’t know what they would have done if they hadn’t come to Rachel House. Vice President of Client Services Alissa Gross tells of one new dad who after receiving services and attending the organization’s annual gala, said that those who support and serve at Rachel House had restored his faith in mankind. Vice President of Advancement Gina Rookstool says, “We want to see healthy families living out their lives because of the services we were able to provide. Some of the babies born after 1992 are now grown and having children of their own. We like to tell those who support Rachel House that, ‘Together we are making a difference across generations.’”

When many come to the realization that a divorce is inevitable, many want the pain of it to end as quickly as possible. They don’t want to be in court. They don’t want to prolong the anguish. They might just agree to something to get the case done. Unfortunately, this can lead to many parties experiencing disputes after the case is over. These disputes can lead to motions to modify where parties try to change the terms of the original settlement as to custody and parenting time, spousal support and child support. If a party is unable to comply with a court order in terms of child support or spousal support, for example, this can lead to motions for contempt in court. This is where a party tries to enforce a prior court order. Motions to modify and motions for contempt can feel like going through the divorce or paternity case again. It can take a while to have these cases heard. They can cost significant sums in attorney’s fees. In many ways, these cases can cost as much or more as the divorce or paternity case itself. While motions to modify and motions for contempt are not ever completely unavoidable, to the extent a party can avoid it, they should. This is where collaborative divorce can help.
