Letter from the Creative Director

nspire comes from the Latin word that means to “enflame” or to “breathe life into.” Doing things that inspire us energizes us and makes us feel more alive. Inspiration doesn’t always have to stem from natural talents and abilities but instead is something that motivates us and is about connecting with what we are passionate about deep within.

Music is that for me. I have been musical ever since I can remember, and it has always come very natural to me. As a little girl, I constantly made up songs and loved to go to friends houses who could teach me how to play whatever instruments they had at their house, and I would often daydream about when I could have an instrument of my own. I still remember getting my first piano, and later, as a teenager, my first guitar and spending countless hours playing. I have always played by ear over reading music, but that may have been out of necessity, as growing up in a large family didn’t lend itself to endless music lessons. Thankfully, I could hear a song and play it pretty quickly by messing around on the keys or strings for a little bit. Music has always played a huge roll in my life and has inspired and invigorated me in a way that is unique from all other interests I have ever had. It makes me feel alive. We all have something that inspires us in a unique way. In the busy stages of our life where it’s hard to even find time to sit for 10 minutes, those things often get pushed to the side. I don’t sit down on the piano or pick up the guitar very often these days, but music is on almost constantly at my house, filling me up in a different way. I have always had a desire to learn to play the cello, and so maybe one day when my kids are older and time allows, I will accomplish that goal, but for now, I am helping my kid facilitate what inspires them. We are featuring music and dance in our August issue. It was so fun to discover so many unique ways people are expressing themselves around the city. Artists and musicians reveal so much of themselves through their work that it exposes a vulnerability that is refreshing and invigorating, and I appreciate the creativity and honestly behind unveiling a part of themselves through their craft.

Then, Troy and Justin Pfeifer sit down with clients and go through floor plans, room by room, floor by floor, ensuring every area is perfectly suited to buyer’s specifications. “We want our buyers to tell us what they really need and expect out of their home plan,” Justin Pfeifer says. “Each home is unique and built with the utmost quality, fit and finish.” The Pfeifers also prize their practice of value-engineering homes. “A customer may have a great room that’s drawn as 20-by-20, but we will put all the furniture they plan to have in that room and render it to scale,” Justin Pfeifer says. “At that point, we may realize that the room only needs to be 15-by-20. Maintaining the status quo during divorce Stange Law Firm, PC

With the advent of no fault divorce, many think that fault no longer matters. As it relates to divorce, the viewpoint is that an affair does not matter at all. Some think that courts will look at it and give it no weight. In the end, the view is everything is going to be divided in half anyway. Child support and maintenance is going to be what it is. And in terms of child custody, many think an affair is irrelevant. Is this correct? The reality is that this viewpoint is not accurate in many states. It is true that to get divorced, parties do not have to show fault for a divorce to be granted. Prior to the advent of no fault divorce, parties would have to show fault like an affair, abandonment, emotional cruelty, violence or some other fault of some kind to get divorced.

But with no fault divorce, that is no longer required. The exact language varies by state, but generally speaking, parties simply have to show that a marriage is irretrievably broken to get divorced. However in terms of marital property and debt division, and spousal maintenance (alimony), many states still allow the conduct of the parties as one of the factors in terms of making that determination. States like Missouri and Kansas fall into that category. However, Illinois excludes fault as a consideration by statute. But in terms of child custody, an affair could still have an effect in most states, as long as it has a bearing on the best interests of the children. In cases where an affair can be pointed to having a negative impact on the children and their custody or parenting time either parent, an affair could still be looked at for custody and

parenting time determination. Thus, parties who think an affair will have no effect whatsoever are potentially missing the mark. It is true that many judges will give little weight to an affair (even in states that allow it to be considered). At the same time, an affair is not completely irrelevant in every case. In some cases, an affair can ultimately impact the result of the case. This is especially true when the affair had a financial impact on the marital estate. During the construction phase, a historic preservationist was part of the team to ensure the red brick exterior stayed true to its original feel. After all, it was on these steps that Harry S. Truman announced his candidacy for Eastern District Judge of Jackson County Court in 1922. Within the restaurant, owners preserved original architectural elements true to the building’s natural look such as the barrel wood roof and the exposed iron trusses. But Molloy and Lock also added more than a pinch of modern spice in the space’s design. A sleek copper bar accented with marble serves up an extensive selection of draft beers, wine and signature seasonal cocktails. Smoky glass orb pendant lighting hangs suspended over large, plush booths in the dining area.

Molloy, a former regional chef for McCormick & Schmick’s, describes Third Street Social’s menu as simple Americana—old classics with a more sophisticated spin, inspired by his experiences as a regional chef in Chicago and in dining at restaurants across the country. The chicken pot pie incorporates red-wine braised chicken, a nod to a French chicken dish. House-pickled vegetables accompany the fried chicken and andouille sausage adds a kick to the meatloaf. Seasonality is also important. The summer menu features an heirloom tomato salad with fresh mozzarella and a Great Lakes walleye sandwich and walleye fingers.

Third Street Social is the second Lee’s Summit restaurant for Lock and Molloy, who seven years ago both left McCormick & Schmick’s to open Summit Grill together. The duo has since added Summit Grill in Waldo, Boru Ramen Bar, Lakewood Local and the adjoining Summit Cellars and Spirits to their repertoire. In their second year of business, Molloy says they’d like to see the catering side of Third Street Social expand. Another similar restaurant concept elsewhere in the KC metro area could also be on the horizon.
